[Q] Buying a Z1 and running a custom ROM - need advice

Hey guys,
Planning on getting an Xperia Z1 Compact to replace my aging but well loved Nexus 4. The immediate plan (post-purchase) is to install a custom ROM (probably Carbon) because I’m not sure how long I can last before the stock Sony UI starts getting on my nerves - and coming from an N4 I'm just to accustomed to vanilla android.
So, any potholes along that road that you guys know about and that I could/should avoid?
Are there any aspects of the phone that are compromised as a result of a running custom ROM and ditching Sony's..Specifically, is something taken out of the quality of the camera when I forego the Sony camera app and its image processing? I hope not. Of course, the Google Camera app won’t have the manual controls and other bells and whistles, but I don’t mind losing those.
Secondly, how is the battery life on a custom AOSP ROM compared to out of the box with the stock Sony ROM. Does losing/gaining the Sony optimizations (if any) make a difference?
Apart from that, I’m pretty pysched to be upgrading to the Z1C!

hey..if you unlock bootloader to install custom rom first of all you need to make a backup for yor TA partion ...2 you won`t lose camera functioality or image processing .. like on his brother z1.. camera is the same but on custom roms the psihical buttonfrom right side won`t work if your phone is locked.
battery life is excelent on roms based on stock .. but on cm,aokp,slim etc... the battery it`s a lil bit lower/weaker..

I never went back to CM or roms based on it because encryption doesn't work, but everbody states that camera quality is worse with custom (CM based) roms, probably because the BIONZ processing (may it be a soft- or hardware feature) cannot be used. When I last tested CM two months ago, it definitely was worse.
Battery life doesn't really differ, some people say it does with one or the other software, but judging by the comments of a larger userbase it won't really make a difference on average unless certain features are enabled (like theft protection / remote wipe which always increases battery usage).
One thing that still doesn't seem to work is encryption (it works but disables all sensors, which makes it pretty much unusable), that and camera quality were the most important showstoppers for me. Audio quality also seems to be better on stock roms, especially when using RomAur with Viper mod.
But just try both before finally configuring the phone, switching is just a matter of minutes and at least it's a matter of personal preference. Thanks to Xposed, I don't miss any features with RomAur 9.1.
PS: you have unlock the bootloader if you want to use any CM based rom.

Well, as for the camera, it gets worse n you'll miss out on the ability to flash in 4k and slow motion, if you're interested
And battery life is in your hands n based on your usage, some people get better and some worse

If you want to buy a z1c, make sure that the bootloader is allowed to be unlocked !!! (dialer : *#*#7378423#*#* ).
This is the most important thing before anything you can do with your device. Otherwise (bootloader unlock : not allowed) you can't install any custom rom.
Download flashtool and flash the latest official firmware (u can find it here on xda). It's a .ftf file (look for the latest KitKat one, not JB !!!)
Now you go to unlock your device with flashtool, and flash a custom boot.img from latest cm11 rom or any other custom rom with fastboot method (see google).
Power Off (hold power button + vol.up together).
Power On and when you see pink led, hold vol. up untill you see the cwr !
Flash what you want (use a external sd-card to avoid any bad surprise in manipulation) !

Not entirely true - If your bootloader can't be unlocked, you still have the option of using custom roms that are based on a stock kernel. It does limit your ROM choices, of course...

Backup TA is a must but in the recent version of 4.4.2(.759) and 4.4.4(.108), all stuffs like X-Reality, Bionz, Music Info will work on unlocked bootloader because Sony finally approved and made some changes in the rom.
I've tested the camera for few days before I unlocked it, that's pretty much no different before and after. I never use X-Reality and Music Info so I can't tell.

Actually, only Nexus got perfect CM, Carbon or AOKP of 3rd party roms. Other phones of AOSP custom roms can be buggy and sometimes even worse than stock. In my opinion, stock based with optimized roms is always more recommended.
On some real large sales phone model, the AOSP custom roms can be great because there are many developers and users based.

Why do you want AOSP based ROM? It's boring as hell and you'll lose all the exclusive Xperia goodies. As suggested, just install modified stock ROM of Z1C. Usually other ROMs are not that stable especially AOSP or CAF ROMs whilst modified Stock are just stock but better thus stable.

Stock Based Vs AOSP

Have a question... What's the main benefict of using a stock based ROM? It will have all stocks apps, and have functional 4k recording and all those problems aosp suffer, or it's just because it's based on the stock ROM?
Like for example what does Cloudy ROM can have, that another ROM that isn't stock based can't.

The "gimp" depends on which variant you have. Like the D855 has great aosp ROMs while others are getting issues here and there cause the 5.0 source hasn't been released for them yet.
So if you're one of those other variants, you can expect things like bad (or not as good) camera, sound issues (mainly music), not as good battery life (not major though) and modem/radio connection issues. That being said, some devices aren't getting those issues.
Also, stock is Kitkat while AOSP is on Lollipop. You gotta ask yourself if the extra features you're getting off AOSP are worth the bad things.
P.S.: I personally prefer AOSP but am waiting on source to use it as my daily.

I'm on 855, but I was talking about the stuff that I can do on Stock vs stock based ROM vs aosp ROM. Like 4k recording for example and duo window screen...

First, a tiny bit for Lollipop defenders. Yes, i always did a full wipe, always installed same apps set up in the same way manually. I always updated cust, rpm and tz to relevant versions. And i always gave system 24h to make all needed background syncs.
Official 5.0 is bad, because of:
1) Lags. Animation is still choppy. Applications are slow to launch, etc.
2) Heat. Phone heats up way more than on KK.
3) Battery. SOT is noticeably worse.
Since LL came out not too long ago, all AOSP roms based on it are still in alpha phase. I believe that most issues will be sorted out later.
AOSP LL is bad because of:
1) Lags. There is way less lags than on official LL, but there are sudden and unpredictable slowdowns.
2) Battery. It is worser than official LL, which makes it almost unusable. 4h SOT (in the same conditions in which official LL lasted 6 and KK 8) is bad.
3) Everything proprietary is more or less broken. Worse (Or none at all?..) low light algorithms in camera software, no Qmemo, etc etc etc.
My advice? Stay on KK for now. LL still needs a lot more polishing...

There are stock based (KK) custom ROMs that do just fine. I would definitely go with stock based atm. AOSP needs polishing.

I believe that most if not all AOSP ROMs are on LL.
Idk about D855 LL stock based ROM but KK performs great. Imo, just test them and see which one your prefer.

Stock Rom vs Custom Roms.

Today, I went back to the Stock rom, Lg G3 marshmallow... even tho i have bloatwares of Tmobile and other apps, the performance is smooth, battery is good also i found that the phone doesn't get hot on the back like when using custom roms.
I have been using different custom roms, like N&N, Fulmics 5.3 and 6.0 ... etc but all had the issue of getting my phone super hot and not smooth as stock.
Are you using a custom rom for Lg g3?
If yes, which one and why you choose it over the stock? pros and cons of the custom rom?

I am usong fulmics 6 1 and is stable for me..... Though the 4g bumps for some time but still it is working fine! Only issue i am having right now is the mac address that has been changed automatically and am not able to reset it back..... Otherwise the rom is good.....

well i flashed Fulmics 6.1... the cellphone network wasn't working and wasn't able to power off the phone or restart it... so i flashed 30d modem and bootloader and everything is working fine now... i hope we get nougat.. but it seems it is going to come only as AOSP ...it is good if IR blaster and keyboard were ported, but we have to live with crappy camera :/

I m using the fulmics kernel and everything.. it has a very nice battery life ! and very smooth and also i flashed update for the GPU posted by someone in the threat... search for gpu .. u will probably find it.

I been off of stock for awhile now. I rooted my phone and flashed a custom rom within two weeks. Way too much bloatware on stock. I tried a few roms. My favourite was Dirty Unicorns, but I am on Slimsabre 5.1.1. now. I am considering trying Paranoid Android to see how it is. Plus right now I am running without gapps, which is another advantage to custom roms. My battery life has greatly improved and I love it without Google Play Services. I prefer the AOSP roms over even stock roms like Fulmics. I tried Fulmics and I wasn't really impressed with it. More customization I have found, and I like the custom kernels settings that are available. Only thing I do miss is the knock code feature. It was so much easier and faster to unlock the phone that way. I had overheating issues as well. Once I lowered my resolution to 1080p the overheating woes were done.

well.. AOSP has a big disadvantage for me because of the Camera quality, a lot of force close and the lack of features, IR blaster and keyboard...but i guess some were ported?... and i guess the knock code feature can be added through xposed? i remember seeing a module there.

Yes the camera quality suffers but for me, I don't use the camera really so I am fine with it. The knock code from xposed only works when the screen is on, which defeats the purpose of the knock code I think. There is f-droid, and apk's that I use. Plus if I switch roms, titanium backup has my apps backed up so it saves the headache of having to install each one again. I've been getting away from Google do no Gapps is the first part. I am starting to trust open source more now. I had overheating issues but once I lowered the resolution to 1080p it fixed the issue.

Z2 Plus overall usability review with custom roms and bugs, battery life, heating etc

Hi Z2 plus users.
After lot of analysis and research, I finally ordered Lenovo Z2 plus today. Got a great deal.
8k INR / approx 125 USD
I have the option of getting Redmi Note 4 as well at approx 150 USD / 10k
I have gone through lot of videos on youtube with different custom rom reviews of Z2 plus, pros, cons etc.
My main concerns are:
- Battery Life
- Heating issue
- Overall usability without digging into custom rom installations and updates very frequently. I will install custom rom but would like to use it as daily driver for few months at least before I look for new updates etc. (Time is the issue - Don't get much of it these days to do all the research and experiments )
With custom roms like AICP, Jaguar - how is the battery life in terms of SOT?
How is the heating issue with custom roms which this phone is infamous for?
I saw a review from Indian tech reviewer on youtube suggesting Jaguar R14 is very stable and good rom for this. But I see some complains and users posting different issues in Jaguar rom thread.
Kindly suggest, if it will be good to go for this phone now (after 1.5 yrs of it's launch)?
Can I expect to use it as daily driver without any significant issues for next 2-3 years with custom roms?
At present which custom rom will you suggest with regards to Battery life and heating issue resolution?

I do not have the device yet and that is my dilemma whether to accept it or return it.
Does these roms also have overheating issues?
How is the battery life on these?

CitrusCAF 3.5 by miju12 seems very stable(dont flash custom kernel unless you know what you are doing) and have favourable review from the users.
and Lenovo z2 is better choice anyway

Got mine today as well. Same deal as the OP (around $120). First thing done was an upgrade to Nougat. Sept 2016 manufacturing and there was still 30% charge left . Device did heat up during upgrade as it was on charge. Haven't observed any major heating since. I have upgraded (or downgraded) from a oneplus 2 so my criteria of heating may be somewhat biased. A 5 inch display does seem smallish though.
Geekbench 4 was 1720, 3999 which is par for SD820. So no throttling etc.
Just wondering what is so broken about stock ROM ? What's not going well with everyone on ZUI ? I did tweak the DPI to my liking - other than that ROM feels pretty much stockish android. I mean I have heard so much hate about stock ROM for this device?
Edited - Ok I am starting to see oddities. 1. Double notifications (any fixes?)
And the usual follow up questions -
- Does the U touch specialization / gestures (swiping etc) work on the custom roms for this device ? Edited - Yes I guess.
- Would unlocking bootloader reset the device ? If yes, might as well do it before setting up apps etc. Edited - Yes it would like any other device.

I have been using Rooted ZUI (I believe that’s what the stock rom is called) for a few weeks now (Xposed now, but that’s been just a few days). At first I thought I would keep it stock rooted and get all the things I need with Xposed, but the Notification drawer and Lock screen is getting on my nerves. All notifications are ICS Style, i.e. they are not expandable and they have no quick action (except USB connection to PC which lets u choose cam/file mode). Lock screen has this weird image in the middle which just sits there doing nothing. Notifications doesn't get displayed in lockscreen (weirdly I am getting 1 calendar notification there, but nothing else). I tried enabling lockscreen notification for a lot of apps, but it seems to just allow calendar and nothing else.
The U-touch is awesome BTW, but wont let me start Google Assistant voice through it (I like being able to set alarms through it)

Anyone still using Oreo?

I have tried Pie roms but they are not as stable as Oreo. Especially in games like PUBG where there are glitches.
Anyone else on a stable Oreo rom? Which rom and why? (Do mention Android version to avoid confusion.)

I'm on bootleggers 3.0 last oreo build with derp 2.8 Kernel i tried almost all ths oreo ROMs and this one is my favorite , you should try it once :good:

Yaps i still on orea , i have tried most of pie rom available for our device but all of them has some kind of glitches and not enough customization as in oreo ,so i will stay in oreo untill pie rom as stable as oreo and has enough customization.

yep, still using aosip oreo rom, it's the first rom i flash after unlocking bootloader, pretty much stable for my daily use

I'm still on AOSiP Oreo, pretty much since I've bought the phone back in June (used RR for some 10 days maybe), and have briefly tried Pixel Experience, but back when it just came out.
Oreo roms are still more stable than Pie, although for my kind of usage I could even go for Pie, but I don't want to give up Xposed just yet.
It would be nice to have another update for Oreo roms with updated blobs, but I guess exactly 0 devs share this opinion so there's that.

What"s wrong with AOSP PIE roms ? I"m using PE right now. PIE roms seems stable to me

Well I didn't state anywhere that they are unstable, I have just said that Oreo roms are still more stable which means more refined and bugs (mostly, or at least the major noticeable ones) ironed out. You have named couple of bugs already, there are also couple of bigger ones, not supported SD card formats, unstable network handoffs (4G->3G->2G), some roms have WiFi bugs. And that's normal, count in the time put in Oreo roms, and on the other hand Pie roms, as with each major Android release, new bugs arrive, some harder to fix, some easier.
And another note I want to make (mentioned in previous post) that for my particular usage, Pie roms are probably suitable enough, though it depends when will I decide to switch and give up on GravityBox and XInsta (mainly the latter).
Pie roms are certainly getting polished, and are already daily driver material for most people, but still, not everyone.
