I've noticed that on the stock equalizer I'm unable to change the bass boost and surround slider since it's greyed out.
Is there a way to fix this?

Stock equalizer?... This is surely not stock right?... Your screenshot doesn't look stock...
It is, the equalizer on my pixel 2xl, unrooted.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
The equaliser is in Play Music settings. I believe the bass boost and surround sound settings may only work when using external sound sources like headphones or Bluetooth speakers. Can't check at the moment as I don't have either with me.

Bass and Surround will only work if you connect a pair of headphones or speakers, either via USB C or Bluetooth.
You can't enable it on speaker mode
Thanks guys, figured that out. I've turned them off since they distort the sound on Android auto even though they are greyed out.

Just to cheekily add to this thread, the GPM equaliser is pretty naff as it is. It'll work for a few hours, and then you suddenly loose the bass boost, and changing settings in GPM has no effect until you reboot the device again. A problem that's been around for a while with no fix.
Which is why when I rooted my P2XL with Magisk, I installed the Viper4Android module. Far more effective than MusicFX.

Yes. This is very annoying. I've reported this multiple times through chat and as per usual with any broken stock function, they just suggest 3rd party apps on the Play Store.

Hi, can you send a link to dl it ? Thanks
No, I'm afraid I can't. Not because I don't want to, but because I didn't download Viper4Android that way. If you're rooted with Magisk, you can find it in the Downloads section of Magisk Manager. If you do install it, I also recommend installing Ainur Sauron, the Audio Compatibility Patch, and the Audio Modification Library. Those four modules combined should cover all your music.

Hi everyone, before anyone complains I did search for the problem everywhere and found nothing so I decided to post it here.
I'm going straight to the point since the problem has been driving me mad for a long time.
The problem arises when I use the ear speaker after that the headphones output is totally distorted but not before. I've always managed to do a reboot and everything is back to normal until I use the ear speaker again and the problem comes back. Something strange is that I only notice the distortion on any headphones or headset but never with a speaker such as a bluetooth speaker or via aux cable to my car.
I changed the firmware to various versions (stock and custom), changed the kernel, changed some build.prop settings, disabled the equalizer apps, changed the music player, disabled the Nuplayer and the problem keeps coming back.
Any ideas ?
Thank you for reading, hope someone can help me I'd be really thankful.
No one had this problem ?

Yes, i had it many times also. I think sound doesn't distorts. The reason for that is audio effects (or any other effects) stops working so sound becomes plain with no bass and other things. Some times force stop audio effects works but reboot always.

Hi everyone! I've just developed an app that should fix the issue of the DAC only being usable in some apps.
Now the ESS DAC/AMP can be used in any app on your phone, including Google Play Music, YouTube, Spotify, and probably many more that I haven't tested yet.
Here's the Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phascinate.lgv10.dacfix
It can be set to automatically turn on when the phone boots up. My goal was to make this a "set it and forget it" kind of fix. All you have to do is enable it once, and it should be fixed for good. Of course, I've only just released it so it may have some bugs. But so far it's working fine on my end.
If you have any issues or it's not working correctly, feel free to tell me here! Hope it works for you guys! I'm really loving the sound quality on this phone.
doing back up now so I can try this, very exciting news if this works
Seems like it's working in Neutron amp which has been my pain point ever since buying the phone.
Thanks!
*tested with youtube and DI.fm both seem working with the DAC with the fix
wow big deal, thanks
Tested with YouTube and XiiaLive Pro and the volume definitely changes when toggling the hifi option on and off.
It is working on Poweramp. Thanks.

Interesting... Can the developer tell us a little more about how this works? I really didn't think it would be as simple as an app like this making it work.

The concept is actually quite simple! Immediately when music starts playing, it plays some completely (and I mean completely! We don't want any background noise, do we?) silent media which tricks the phone into turning the DAC on.

In theory, it should be. Because it's set to be silent, Android should simply completely skip over the silent media. In my own testing it doesn't seem to have had any negative effect whatsoever on sound quality. Though I'd love to see the frequency output in something like Audacity if anyone wants to test it.

Alrighty. Right now I'm on my lunch break at work listening with a Brainwavz HM5. Things seem good here, but I'll test tonight with my AKG Q701.
I really only use the stock music app and TIDAL which both worked without your fix, but I'll test everything out more tonight. My only concern would be a possible negative effect with apps that already worked fine, for example a silent track playing along with the regular music making things possibly no longer bit perfect, or extra battery drain for some odd reason. I'll test sound quality with my Q701 tonight and see if I notice any extra battery drain. All I can confirm at the moment is that toggling hifi on and off definitely changed the volume with apps that it didn't before.
Good work.

Yeah, that was my concern too. But everything seems to be working fine.
Feel free to post your results with the Q701's as soon as you test them!
Good job, works as intended. Thanks.
Few suggestions: Show status of app running in background from top pull down menu. Also the ability to enable disable from there. Otherwise still 5 out 5.
man you are a genious and this is the best ever app i appreciated this year
Does this app need root permission?
Edit: nvm. Just installed and gonna test..
Thanks for the effort mate. I'll also give it a try though as a non-audiophile person, I fail to notice Hi-Fi DAC effect anyway.
for those who can distinguish the difference between DAC enabled/disabled, can you tell that's even distinguishable with the QuadBeat headphones? I'm trying with some FLAC and various music players but other than then "higher volume" I cannot notice an improvement sound wise.
I do try with the QuadBeat and Bose QC25. I also just purchased a Piston 3. Do you think it's my headphones who are not enough to make a difference?
Can you maybe recommend a song where you can clearly distinguish the performance between DAC enabled or disabled?
Amazing app, thank you very much.
Now I challenge you to check the other audio limitation of the phone.
The normal and high gain mode of the Amp depending the impedance of the headphones at the moment is completely automatic.
That's OK with IEM but there are problems with big headphones with low impedance. In those cases the normal gain mode delivers not enough power (volume) and being able to select or force the high gain mode would be a perfect solution.
At this moment the high gain mode is triggered with headphones with an Impedance over 50ohm.
Thanks anyway for this app.

Seems to be no negative effects on SQ. Not sure on any change in battery life yet. Good so far.
Fantastic! At first I thought there would be a big battery impact since there is silent media playing, but then I remembered that only happens when there is actually music playing - fantastic implementation. Hopefully there is no battery drain. Works here for Google Play Music, so thank you very much!!!
it is working great with spotify here
I do notice the clarity with dac on and off.. however i'm using free spotify so the music stream is not high quality.
I only did notice a bug not sure because of this app or not but it never happen before.
So today i plug my phone to aux in my car in the morning everything work great.
in the afternoon i plug aux again to my car and this time my 4G or 3G writing on my signal bar is gone until i restart. This never happen before i install your apps, but seems i can't repeat this bug.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to make this app. I just tested it with Player Pro and it seems to be working (Player Pro did work before but only if you didn't install the DSP pack). I did have one question. I noticed that the EQ is not working in Player Pro. You can open the EQ, but changing any of the frequencies or selecting a preset has no effect on the audio. Does that mean that the other audio features like Replay Gain also won't work with the app installed?
So, I've been using Spotify since my N5 & N5x and once I got my Pixel 2 XL back in October, I noticed that the equalizer was activated but it didn't really make a difference.
With the N5x I used to face issues where the song would start and then the equalizer would kick in after a few seconds but that was fixed in a later update (not sure if it was a Spotify update or Google update). However with the Pixel 2XL (completely stock/un-rooted) the equalizer is on but nothing happens. The sound remains the same. Does anyone else face the same issue?
I've seen a lot of threads telling people to root and use Viper but I'm not too keen on it. I'm just trying to understand if its a Google issue or Spotify issue and if anyone has been able to get it to work. I'd appreciate some troubleshooting help!

When i go in the Spotify settings equalizer and it takes me to stock equalizer and i change settings it does changes
Not sure why it isn't changing for you
Sent from my Google Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
Can you post a screenshot of your equalizer?
I have the same issue.
No matter how I change the settings in the equalizer, it makes no audible difference.
Using a Pixel 2XL on android 9.
What's strange is that it was working previously and only stopped working about a month ago.
If you have "Normalize Volume" On it can affect the equalizer as the app tries to keep the volume levels constant. It dulls the output, I've turned it off and get better quality sound out in my car now but have to deal with a song starting loud.

Dirty plug. Corroded plug, etc. Check the plug and clean it, also check the inside of the plug, and clean it.

I'm facing the same situation: after July update headphones are not working as it should. First I thought my left earbud or some internal part of the phone was broken but now that you said, it make much sense. I just tested my earbud on a different device and it works properly. (I'm using the same earbuds since day one with the phone). I cant imagine what it could have happen besides a july update issue.

Did you update to the latest august version yet? Is the problem still there?
If the problem still persists, go to accessibility settings, switch sound to MONO, that should level out both channels. If the problem still persists, the problem is hardware. If it doesn't switch mono off, and check the balance settings in any Sound FX app you may have on your device.

Installing the Sony Music from Play store revealed a hidden SoundFX app. Maybe something messed with that. Download the Sony Music App, go to settings and click on Sound Effects, or whatever the function is called. Check the balance volume from there.
Also, try installing Noozxoide from app store, I use that for audio reprocessing and I'm extrmely happy with it, maybe that could reset the volume through reprocessing.
Also, what do you use to listen to music or sounds? Maybe that specific app has balance settings and got messed with.

I use spotify and I don't think that app can mess up with my volume balance
So wanted to comment on this
First, this is the best phone I’ve ever owned, although its lacking in a couple of things i was used to (coming from a oneplus 9 that had a lot of settings compared to this one, still this is a waaaay better phone) the speed, screen size and battery life makes it all worth it
Though! I use a lot of external dacs through the usb c connector (main reason to have a big battery)
I’m finding some issues in the audio department:
Tidal mqa files are not being played if the dac doesnt have mqa decoding (normally they would play without issues in iPadOS and one ui/ oxygen os
Some dacs (specially ifi hifi link) will not play files until a mqa file is played, though any system sound will interrupt the communication with the dac, it can be fixed played any master quality track and then going back to flac/ hifi quality in tidal, YouTube doesn’t work at all with this dac.
Facebook and YouTube wont play audio sometimes,my theory is that the player goes for the oem 3.5 out instead of the dac. That could be fixed if we got an audio output selector in the notifications player, though the option is not available as the player plays as a simplified notification, so no audio selection is possible
Of course the 3.5 jack in this is quite nice but … usb c dacs are a bit better at handling hi res files and streaming and of course demanding headphones.
Sent already this to nubia. Hopefully there will be a work around, UAPP is a viable solution of course but the easiness to surf through playlists is better in the tidal app.
So anyway, anyone surfing for an answer: its in the developers hands
Just wanted to leave this in case anyone looking in the internet is looking for answers on this
No audio switch app works on android 13 (lesser audio switch, etc)
Although there’s work around for using the external dacs, it comes as a surprise the first times. Though the phone is a beast and i truly love the battery life and extended display, a couple of tweaks and this would be the best phone out there
Kinda figure it out. The DTS ultra app was the culprit, even if it showed the toggle off, it was turning on (and screwing the sound for me) , just disabled the "auto start" or link button on the app preferences. all audio is being processed by the external dac. At least YouTube and fb are working flawlessly so far
Update: Some dacs are still having issues with the mqa decoder, but the general audio is coming out of the usb c port at least.

Hi there. I had the same problem. But I was able to access my DTS Ultra app. It doesn't appear in my app drawer but I found the audio effects app for DTS Ultra using Activitylauncher from play store.
I could be wrong but I also noticed there is no way to EQ the speakers on the phone. The DTS Ultra app only shows up for headphones and gives the "Disconnect External Devices" error on speakers. I find the speakers to be good quality but slightly lacking in tuning, is there any way to perhaps tune them through 3rd party means? Thanks for the help.
