I thought the pixel 2 xl had a one handed mode setting. Maybe I'm thinking of my old Note 5. There was an option to swipe up from the corner and have the phone go into a scaled down screen/nav bar mode. Can't seem to find this setting now on the Pixel 2 XL.

I too had a Note 5 and used that feature a bit but nothing native in the Pixel. There is this thread...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/how-to/one-handed-mode-pixel-xl-t3695625
No native one-handed use but some tips are to use the fingerprint sensor to pull down and up the notification menu and turn on one-handed keyboard option.

I have a rooted Note 2014 with Clean Romo 1.0 on it. I mainly use my Note in tablet mode but hate having to use the default arrows on the side. I was hoping their was an app or a zip that enabled this so it would float to however you had your screen. Any ideas?

I assume you're referring to the soft navigation keys?
There are a number of apps if you search for soft navigation keys on Google Play. Maybe start with this one (as it doesn't seem you need root access to enable it)?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.yesoft.handysoftkeys&hl=en
Edit: So I just installed the Handy SoftKeys app and it seems to do what you want it to do, although the placement on the screen is a little weird (middle of the screen on the right edge). The "back" key doesn't seem to work in every single application, but the "home" and "running apps" buttons seem to work okay.
I just bought the Nexus 7 2013, and coming from the original Galaxy Tab (2010) the absence of hardware buttons drives me crazy because of the Navigation Bar (I hope this is the right term for it) which I dont like.
Reasons:
- I press the buttons accidentally when using the keyboard
- It is a waste of vertical screen space when in landscape mode
So is there any way to put the navbar to the right in landscape mode (like on most phones)? Like some magic build.prop hack?
I am currently on cm11 official nightlies, but changing roms or patching the source myself if necessary is an option too.
Any hints?

Its not an ideal solution, bit you can use phab7 -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-phab7-v0-99-reboot-ui-switcher-t2545080
Chose phone ui, and it will put them on the right in landscape. I say its not ideal because it spread's the buttons out and causes the Google now ring to be off center. Unfortunately it doesn't support tablet ui (apparently google took it out in 4.4+), but phone ui, and split menus work on KitKat.
I personality use pie controls from gravity box, and force immersive on any apps I want fullscreen with Xutilites -
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.nagopy.android.xposed.utilities
So all my games/chrome/play magazines/etc. automatically go immersive, I hated having to switch it on and off all the time, so this worked for me. I also use gravity box to make the nav bar smaller, so when it is there it takes up less room. The nav bar will still pop up with the keyboard if you go this rout tho. You could disable it completely with gravity box, but you would have to really like pie controls for that lol. Gravity box -

These are all Xposed framework mods BTW, I am assuming you'd be comfortable with this since your running a custom ROM. I hate the lost pixels as well. Best of luck reclaiming the rest your screen
Thanks for the detailed reply :good:
I am very satisfied with the results with phab7.
Adding a 4th icon to the navigation bar was necessary to have them look centered again.
I am completely gapps free - so the google now problem does not apply to me
I just switched to the Pixel 2 XL from Samsung and the pulldown menu is lacking a ton of settings. There isn't even the little speaker icon that switches from sound to vibrate to silent. Is that just the way stock Android is? Did Samsung add all those convenient menu features? Anyway to add more?
Pull the menu down twice, there is a little pencil icon at the bottom, between the date and the settings icon. You can add, remove, rearrange. If you want something that's not available you can usually get it with an app...if nothing else, you can create them with Tasker to do pretty much anything.
Thanks. Now to get used to this screen! (or not)
For the whole vibrate or silent thing... There's a volume rocker on the side of the phone...

I saw that pixel 3 has new assistant, and how to run this on pixel 3a xl?
If using gestures, you swipe up from the bottom corners of the screen. Or just squeeze.

Hello!
I received my Google 6 Pro yesterday and everything seems to work - lucky. Even the fingerprint sensor works quite well, significantly better than on my Xaomi Mi Note 10 Pro before - despite the protective film.
But what really bothers me: How should I reach the back key with my right thumb? Gesture control is nothing for me. So I would have to remap the soft keys: Last apps left, Home in the middle and back on the right. However, this doesn't seem to work that easily since Android 10.
Is there a solution?
Thanks very much
I used the Fabricated Overlays app to hide the NavBar then used Fluid Navigation Gestures to get swipe up from the bottom right to go back, middle to go home, and left for recents. It's very similar to the Samsung gestures and gives you the extra screen real estate.

I recommend "edge gestures"
I swipe down on the sides to return to home screen and swipe up for recents. However, you can customize the gestures to your liking. For example I have touch and hold on the edge to drop down the notification window. I have a large hand and using the stock gestures is frustrating.
