Question before rooting - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm wondering if any custom ROMs have the following features:
-Double tap to wake, that works alongside fingerprint scanner
-swipe selection (I was an Android user a few years back, don't know if this tweak is still around)
-lockscreen pattern unlock in which you can change the dot grid size
Thanks in advance!

I think all of those are available, but not sure they are all in one rom. I am currently running the AquariOS room with great great results. Head over to the thread and look at the OP. Also look at the Flash Kernel and installing the TWRP zip is the way to go. @Badger50 is running almost the same exact setup as me so he would be another source of help. I'm going to be away for a couple weeks but if your starting from scratch, I would ask about what you are unsure of after reading a lot.

They all pretty much have DTTW, as do all the custom kernels.
Swipe selection?? Explain in what context you mean...lock screen, notifications, recents???
Grid size adjustment?? Not that I've seen or noticed. Then again, I don't use it.

OK I found an app that sorted swipe selection.. basically I meant cursor control using a swipe on the keyboard!
So yeah are there any ROMs that allow you to have pattern lock with a larger grid.. so there are more than 9 dots?

Ah, Swype keyboard is what you meant. You'll likely need a keyboard that allows that feature like Swift, Swype, or Smart keyboard. That's another feature that I've never used or liked. Heck, I still use the t9 method since I'm old and like 2 letters on my keys. As far as the pattern grid, no, there is no adjustment on Aquarios rom that allows you to increase the number of dots. However, I bet there's an app for that. What isn't there an app for anything these days

[Q] Slide to Unlock w/Pattern

Maybe an odd question.
Is it possible to have the slide to unlock screen available if you use a patter to unlock the screen?
I know if you use a pin the slide to unlock still shows.

Not on an aosp rom, no. On a sense rom you can. Just remove the htclockscreen.apk, and you'll be left with the vanilla unlock screen. If you have a pattern enabled, it still comes up after unlocking the slider. (Again, only on a sense rom)

I'll see if I can't get it added as a feature request for CM.
Try widget locker. Any widget you can add to the regular home screen can be added to the lock screen, including music controls, etc.
I have mine set up such that all the apps I normally use are available from the lockscreen. This way, don't have to multiple tap to get to them.
Don't mind the duplicate calculators..

Does that cause any lag? When I tried widget locker a long time ago, it lagged. My phone on wake up.

The only lag I notice is when booting, and possibly the first wakeup after sleep after a reboot. There after, it seems to wake up relatively fast (1/2 second?) Is it an instant wake, no, but I can live with waiting a split moment to have the functionality of not having swipe then tap, or swipe then tap twice to get to something.
Like you, I tried it some months back and thought it was a piece of garbage. I was reluctant to try it again, but got spoiled with CM7's multiple sliders on the lock screen. Having returned back to sense for other reasons, I missed that functionality.

Thanks for the response. I may consider giving it another try.
If you plan on using this with cm7, keep in mind, actual widgets on the lock screen only work with the standard system theme. With other themes, the widgets disappear after a reboot.

It's stupid little bugs like this that annoy the crap out of me. So much for final I can't stand the green, so I just have shortcuts on the lock screen. In fact, I could almost tolerate the green, but it changes the theme of the status bar pull down widget to a light grey instead of a more black.

Gesture app to expand quick tiles?

Hi all. I tried both Action and Nova launchers and while I like both I'd rather just stick with the stock launcher. One thing I greatly miss though is the gestures, specifically the option to swipe down from anywhere in the home screen to expand quick tiles.
I searched the Play Store and found a couple gesture apps but came up empty. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks. Just downloaded it and it looks like it only supports making new tiles, not a quick gesture to quickly expand quick settings unfortunately.
If you're rooted then give GMD gesture control a try. Fully customizable gesture support. It's one of the primary reasons why I root my devices. I particularly like having custom edge gestures to make one handed operation very easy. I've got several apps and functions mapped to thumb gestures of various shapes/directions from the right edge. Works great.
why not just swipe down from the top with two fingers?
I know its not 'anywhere' on the screen, but its just what you want.

Because I'd rather be able to swipe from anywhere on the screen like you can set up in Nova Launcher.
Hopefully I'm wrong but my gut tells me that in order to get what you want an app would have to intercept touchscreen input while the default home screen is active . . . and that would require root.
LMT looks like the app you're looking for.

[Q] Gesture apps - Why home gesture dont work?

Hi to all!
I'm experiencing a really strange thing when try to set an HOME gesture with some of most famous apps for that purpose, like ALL IN ONE GESTURES, EDGE GESTURES and similar.
If I set recent apps and back gesture, they work in every way I set them...but if I try to set ANY KIND of gesture for returning to home... nothing happens.
The command work properly (I feel the haptic vibration, or alinz, that starts when a command is performed), but the gesture won't work in the end...
Anyone noticed that too? Maybe there's something I missed for make them work?
I use swipe up from bottom border and it works for me. I use aio.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
I didn't find the cause yet but it is also happening to me. If I reboot the phone the home gesture starts to work fine, it only breaks if I re-enabled the nav bar + disable immersive mode using their quick tiles provided by joneplustools and systemuituner. The easiest solution is to reboot the phone.
Well but are you rooted?
Because I can disable navbar but on home screen it'll be always there, so I can't use bottom gestures, only edge...

Right now I'm rooted, yes.
Without root the navbar always shows if you swipe from the bottom. You could try a 0px navbar by I think it doesn't work in OOS at the moment.

I already have the 0pt navbar and used successfully on S8 but with OnePlus it just don't works, I suppose because the navbar is named "drawable" in OnePlus internals while in APK it's "navbar", at least I've read it on multiple sources...

Yeah that must be the reason.
If you don't want to root right now your solution is to use a gesture app like edge gestures or swipe navigation because you can use gestures from the right/left edge so you activate the navbar less often.
It's not ideal but is has one advantage; for example when I want to close a game using the back button, the gesture sometimes is not recognized and I have to activate the navbar using the quick setting and that sometimes breaks the home gesture like we discussed yesterday so I have to reboot the phone sometimes. You only have to swipe from the bottom and it's all fine.

According to my experience this kind of problem is most likely caused by a third party app, possibly an xposed module or some half baked apk. Privately exchange a list of your installed apps, compare and concentrate on the more dubious apps you have in common and you may find your culprit there.

Yeah that's the main gripe. I suppose you are concerned about burn-in.
I don't know if stock OOS Oreo will fix that. Maybe some Dev can mod the navbar file as I was done with the old filetype as in the Galaxy S8.
I also can tell you that on LiquidRemix 8.0 ( it's on a Telegram group as is in testing stage ) you could hide the navbar completely without root but I understand that you don't want to change the rom and right now is has bugs so is better to stay in Oxygen.
Right now I'm using stock OOS 4.7.4 with root and to update is super easy, just download and flash the full zip, flash your kernel + magisk/superSu after and it's done.
I don't know if you care about Android Pay...

I can tell you that on a fresh installed OOS 4.7.4 without third party apps it doesn't work. The problem is that on Oxygen the navbar has another name in system so that mod doesn't work.
No I don't care about it because there's no need for it now, at least for me.
I've always rooted phones, no problems with that, it's just that I don't feel the need to do it with 5T since is nearly stock and good to run stock "as is"...

Is there a way to obtain gesture controls as in 9.5.14 with an App or Flashable zip?or is it there included in any custom ROMs?

You Can Find A Ton Of "Pie Style" Gesture Controls On The Playstore..
And it's my understanding that some of the custom ROM's have gestures baked in.
But NONE of them will work as good as the gesture option that come with MIUI 9.
To have the whole lower half of the Left and Right edges to swipe in on.. as well as the whole lower bezel to swipe up on...
Well... I can never go back to reaching for specific areas to push a buttons..
So I guess I'm stuck on a Stock or Debloated version of MIUI 9 / 10 as long as I own this device.

When you have used GMD gesture, you will never revert back to those less-appealing solution. Current gesture implementation only only for certain gesture. But GMD gesture allow you to create custom gesture, limiting to certain edge detection, multiple touch point support, per-app setting, and many built-in function, including shortcut to tasker/automagic task/flow. It requires root, however consider you are willing to flash a zip, you must have root access already.
Good news is the app almost doesn't drain extra battery. I have Automagic and GMD Gesture running 24/7, still got similar battery life compared to others, 10-12 hours in 1-1,5 days. This app is one of the reason I still root till dates.

Anyway to add SmartBar navigation to a stock rooted ROM?

I just got the pixel 2 xl and rooted it and installed nitrogenos and spent four hours setting it up only to find out that custom ROMs don't suppport the active edge feature
One of the biggest things I love about custom ROMs is the SmartBar navigation. Just being able to customize the nav buttons is really helpful so I don't want to give that up yet.

You can hardly find any reference to someone using smartbar on Google. Hardly 1 video on youtube. I was wondering did you find a way out to use it maybe as a separate app?Google has already moved on to gesture based navbar. I still believe smartbar is the best navbar for we can set upto 21 actions without leaving the active app.

Some way to install smart on any rom would be great.
I wont use a rom without it... it is what Android should ship with.
Anyone who used smartbar probably loves it.
Why billion $ companies wont do this... ? Are they evul jerks?
The alternatives, don't keep their own space, they popup-over the bottom edge.
A proper navigation bar keeps it's own area without covering other apps.

O this? This is called smartbar. It is part of many custom roms (i believe upto oreo only). Like havoc os, Resurrection remix, etc. Extremely disappointed that no one brought it as a separate app. Arc lighting
Navigationbar is the closest it can get. Unfortunately development is extremely slow and developer does not seem to be interested in implementing smartbar features into it.

I searched the same issue but couldn't find a solution. Smartbar is great...I am using android 9 for smartbar only
