Hello all,
About a week ago, I purchased 3 bootlooped Xperia Play's off of eBay as a part of a project in repairing phones. The first two were successfully fixed by flashing stock ROM via flashtool. The two phones work perfectly. However, the third phone has been giving me trouble. It bootloops the same as the other two, however, with this one it refuses to go into fastboot mode. After holding down the back button and inserting the usb, the green light will blink for a fraction of a second and then nothing. Eventually, the battery animation will come on and it will go into charging mode.
Things I have tried:
-Using several older versions of flashtool
-Installing Xperia Play and flashtool drivers from flashtool folder in C drive
-Reinstalling all drivers
-Using a different computer
-Using several different cables
-Charging battery all night
-Leaving battery out of phone all night
-Using different Xperia Play battery
-Using PC companion
No matter what I do, the third phone will not go into flashmode. The 1st and 2nd phones will connect just fine.
I have looked around the entire internet and no one seems to know why this happens or how to fix it. Could it be a hardware related issue?
OS: Windows 10
Any tips or solutions would be much appreciated.
Sorry to bump, but 40 views and not a single reply? Someone HAS to have an idea of what is wrong.
Also, I just remembered that during one of the flashes with flashtool, the cable got disconnected from the computer and a yellow triangle appeared on the Xperia device. I'm unsure if that was the same device that is now giving me issues.
Why don't you try to restore it using fastboot instead.
You can unlock the bootloader using the MEID and sony website. Then either flash kernel that have CWM built in, like Lupus, or boot a cwm image.
Once you're in cwm you can flash any rom to it.

I installed the cwm recovery released today for locked bootloaders and forgot I did and tried to reflash using SEUS(I was tired) - May have been my battery level being 45% ish ... This bricked my phone... I've tried flashtool with uk generic 2.3.3 & 2.3.4 it gives me the same error about turning on usb debugging - I can't -_-.SEUS tells me to charge my phone to 50% + - when i charge my phone the light simply blinks green or bootloops to after the sony erricson logo where I see the phone with the exclamation mark...
Start up Sony Ericsson PC Companion, dont put in your phone, click on support zone, phone software update, repair phone (highlighted in blue), let it download some stuff, select xperia play. Follow instructions
SEPC = Sony Ericsson Pc Companion ; Tried it . Thanks anyways.
How about wotanserver.com? You can flash the firmware for free on there. It was fast and easy when I tried it out.
wotanserver does not work.
Well, if none of those methods work and it's just bootlooping, you might just have to take it to your provider with a blank look on your face and say "I don't know WHAT could have happened! It just started doing this for no reason!"
Sorry, friend. I hope you can find a way to resolve this. Sounds nasty!
Well, SEUS finally decided to fix the phone after i tried 7 times in a row - was opening+closing it before. Thanks for your help anyways!
Hello Everyone
I tried to find a solution without troubling anyone, so I searched a lot and a lot of threads all over the internent with no hope . I have tried as many possiblesolutions as I could find even those which are not meant for xperia play. I will explain everythingvery clearly for those who want to help or even try to ...
The Problem :
My Xperia Play suddenly doesn't get pass the Sony Ericsson text at the boot screen which appearsas soon as you turn on the device. It keeps hanging on that white text on that black background for hours until I pull out the battery . I then found out that if I connect my charger before turning on the device it will boot normally as usual . I also found out that as soon as I disconnect the charger cable , the phone will immediately turn off. Another important issue is that even when I mamange to boot the phone normally by the charger , the screen does not respond to my touch even in CWM touch recovery in Doomkernel . Despite that , I can operate the phone completely using the key pad . That means the phone is full functional except for the " boot " and " touch " problems.
What I have done so far :
- I flashed different stock firmware FTF several time via Flash Mode including .42 , .58 enhanced , and .62 using flashtool with flashing ending in success each and everytime .
- I flashed different kernels via Fastboot Mode including DoomlordKernel v14 (GB ) , DoomlordKernel v3 ( ICS ) , and Lupusv11 ( ICS)
- I have accessed CWM recovery serveral times and formated each and everything that could be formatted including data , system , cache ..etc
- I have also tried flashing different ROMs such as NXT 1.3 and Markpython XPlay ICS
- I have put phone in a rice bag in case it had moister or water damage !
- I have disassemble the phone completelypart by part and found nothing damaged so I cleaned it and ressambeled it again
- I have left the phone for days without turning it on . I also tried keeping the battery out for several hours.
- I have used a replacement new battery just in case it was my battery has a problem.
- I relocked my bootloader and repaired my phone via Sony Update Service and the repairing process endedin success.
The results so far :
Nothing changed at all . After doing all of the above and repeating it. I even did more things I can't remember now.Everything is still the same. The phone is stuck at SE text at boot screen and if connected to charger then turned on it will boot normally but the touch screen doesn't respond for some reason I can't figure out , although the digitizer is intact.
What I am doing now :
- I have no more trick to try and I am totally depressed about this ZOMBIE Xperia Play which is half working and half borken.
Thank you very much for your time and for trying to help
I am waiting for your suggestions ...
For your touch screen problem, I doubt that the digitizer is damaged. As for your booting issue, I'm not sure.
looks like the battery doesn't give enough power to the phone

Maybe it is invisabely damaged . However, if I can't fix my boot issue , getting a replacement digitizer is just a waste of money.

The power turns on and the screen turns on when the I power the device. The problem is booting into the system.
It get stuck at Sony Ericsson text . However, it's very mysterious why the phone turns off when the charger is disconnected , perhaps the real question is : how come the battery powers the device but can not boot it and keep it running ?
You didn't say what version is your xperia play is. Is it R800x, R800i, R800a, R800at? If you have the xperia play CDMA version you cant use GSM kernel or roms.
I dropped my phone (after replacing the housing) and had the same thing happen to me. Opened it up again and the digitizer cable was loose. Fixed it for me.
EDIT- My phone would turn on without the need of the cable, but i couldnt mount my sd card/enter mtp unless i connected the usb cable prior to turning it on (so my issue was slightly different).

It's R800i , and it is used to work normally. I also tried stock kernel and nothing changes ... the problem persists.
Thanks for trying to helo.

I already opened up my device and disconnected the digitizer cable and reconnected it and the touch was
still not working but I'll try it again as soon as I fix my boot issue. The phone doesn't boot to the system
unless connected to the charger prior to turning it on.
my phone is only 6 months old ... It runs perfectly when connected to charger but as soon as I disconnect it the phone turns off ... using a new battery doesn't solve the problem ... what could it be that causing this ?!
Final Solution to your problem
You will have to use odin. Just connect it to a laptop/desktop and run Odin. It will fix your problem and if this doesnt work you will have to send it to a Sony centre in your neighborhood. But I am sure odin will fix it. I had a similar problem once. So try odin.
Click thanks if you appreciate this

I never used this program before . I thought it was flashtool equivalent for samsung phones. I guess I was wrong. I really appreciate your help . Could you please explain more about the process. Give me steps to follow... Thank you very much I really appreciate your great help.
I'm pretty sure Odin is only for Samsung phones as the phone has to be in "download mode" for anything to work and well Sony devices don't have a download mode

Odin is only for Samsung phones, and I'm having an issue quite similar with my Play R800at. I just got it from a friend. It boots, continues up to ATT screen, then resets. I can't figure out how to boot into recovery, I can't find flashtool, I'm completely lost. I should have stuck with my S3.

Well Sony xperia devices don't have a stock recovery...so it should go into fast boot if you take the battery out and hold search on the phone, plug the USB into the PC and the phone led should turn blue and bam your in fast boot

I did fix the boot loop issue. If you download the Sony pc companion, hold the back button and plug the usb in at the same time, it will download a repaired version of the latest firmware and fix the boot loop.

Just wondering but did anyone solve the initial issue as the same thing has happened to my xperia r800i
1. Flash ftf with flashtool
2. Flash gb/ics/jb kernel
3. Flash gb/ics/jb rom via the kernel recovery
It should do it but kernel has to match the ROM.
Example: if i want to flash jb rom then I have to flash jb kernel.

Hello, I've been searching for a situation like mine for a while and was unable to find it.
My phone had the screen destroyed over the weekend and I purchased one that would not turn on to replace the broken screen. I swapped the motherboard from my working phone into the broken phone.
When I hit the power button, it vibrates and the screen will get power (no display, just a blank backlight) and the phone will power back off.
It will not boot in safe mode either.
Is this a symptom of a broken motherboard? Or are there other things I can try? I have not had a chance to hook it up to try the pc companion.
I have the old screen assembly (with the flex cable and such, digitizer and LCD are shot)
My phone is not rooted, and it is unlocked.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for reading!
Update:
Connected to Sony pc companion. Pc companion recognized that there was a phone and allowed me to run a repair.
Charging light came on during process (was not responsive previously).
Still will not boot. Only charges when hooked up during repair.
Still no recovery mode :/
Are there any secondary recovery programs available that you would recommend?
Sorry for the double post.

I'm thinking that you might have a hardware problem rather than a software problem, but if you want to try to play around some more with possible software fixes... you'll want to learn how to use Androxyde's Flashtool program. It allows us to flash firmware onto the Xperia Play, with both locked and unlocked bootloaders. (Also, I'm not sure if you are trying to get the phone to boot into a stock recovery, but the Xperia Play does not come with a stock recovery like most other android phones. If you want a recovery on it, you would need to install one).
Here's the site where you can grab the most recent Flashtool: http://www.flashtool.net/index.php

Good luck!
Thank you! I spent the whole weekend trying the software fix. It had no result so I tried the hardware like you suggested. I swapped the ribbon cable and it did the trick!

:good: That's good to hear. Good work with sticking with it until you got it fixed.
So I have an xperia M4 Aqua Dual (E2363), it is not rooted, locked bootloader, usb degugging disabled, basically straight from the factory.
When I turn it on all I get is the white Xperia screen, it doesn't loop, but it doesn't get any further.
I can get in to fastboot mode but I don't think I can do anything here since usb debugging is disabled right?
If I try flash mode, I get the green light but the phone is never detected in flashtool (tried windows and linux versions 9.23 and 9.18).
Some background:
I have been having problems alot recently, so much so that in the past 3 weeks I have used Xperia Companion to software repair 5 times. I have also had problems since I got the phone, but not as frequent as recently.
Usually XC software repair works, but just like with flash mode in flashtool, XC no longer detects when I plug the phone in.
Based on that I have always had this problem, albeit not as often, I think there must be some hardware problem.
Is there anything left that I can try?
Well, first of all, this is not an Xperia M4 section. This is Xperia M(2013) section. So from next time make sure you post in right section because Xperia M4 users will be able to help you better.
Now coming to your problem, device might not be getting detected because you might not have installed right drivers for it.
In flashtool installation directory, you'll find fastboot drivers. install drivers for your device.
Another problem might be from your pc. I remember my laptop is giving me error "USB not recognized" but my pc works well. So just try it.
Hope it helps
And from next time make sure you post in right section.
I didn't notice that about the section, thanks for the heads up!
So, here's the deal with this phone. It's sat untouched for many many years. The original owner can't remember why she got rid of it (family friend). So I volunteered to take it, and turn it into an emulator device. However, it was made clear as to why she got rid of it. The phone is stuck in a gnarly boot loop. The boot loop is, Sony Ericsson screen lit up, and then goes to an unlit version of the logo. After a while, the phone will restart repeat. The phone will get into flash mode (green light) and will not continue the loop but stays on the unlit version of Sony Ericcson. I've gotten it into fastboot once, maybe twice, but I can't remember exactly how I did it (holding menu doesn't work)
I have installed the drivers for the phone, however, the phone is listed as:
E:\
Device Type: Portal Device
Manufacturer: SEMC
Location: on Volume
The drivers that it is apparently using is wpdfs.inf
Things I have tried to correct this issue.
-The Xperia app (tells me to enter flashmode in its own way and never does anything after)
-Flashing using "FlashTool"
It sees a phone but just says.
"19/025/2018 22:25:46 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
19/025/2018 22:25:46 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode"
I've attempted using a fastboot method but nothing substantial as fastboot rarely happens.
Accessing the device through ADB (ADB shows not devices connected
Accessing the device through FastBoot (FastBoot shows "waiting for devices")
I have crawled through dozens of pages worth of information, similar questions, similar problems and come up short. Any advice would be super helpful.
Will provide images, and further information if requested. Thanks for your time.
I'm not familiar with the at version. Also maybe its already stated in the post and I miss it, did u try flashmode on flashtools and flash stock TFT?this is the first thing you wanna do in case of problems. For fastboot if I remember correctly you have to push search button and not the menu button, but I haven't my xplay with me.

Hey, I did try flashing the stock firmware, the version is the AT&T version from the US. The problem with attempting to flash is Flashtool doesn't detect the phone. It sees that there's a phone plugged in, but flashing is impossible because it can't find the phone. I figured it must've been a driver issue, so I scoured the web to find drivers but only could find the 800a drivers, so I went ahead and attempted those, but not to no avail.
My next attempt to bring out Windows 7 and attempt to install the drivers on Windows 7, instead of 10. Just been a bit slow, and feeling a bit dejected on the whole project.

to install flashtools drivers in win 10 you need to disable uac but maybe you already did that. make sure the adb drivers are fully and correctly installe. have you tried flashing a kernel in fastboot mode by pushing the search button? also i would try to install r800i or r800a drivers. then i would suggest to make a little bit of search (i know you already did a lot...) to ensure that you can flash r800i or r800a firmware on your r800at and also try that route. i´m sorry i can´t help you more but i´m in europe and never worked on a r800at..
Hey, dont worry about it. This post is basically a hail mary for a phone that super old. I haven't tried flashing in fast boot because I have only ever gotten in fast boot once or twice. Fast boot is menu key correct? Cause I see conflict information all over the place.
i´m pretty sure it´s the search button for fastboot mode
Do you need a new battery?
Hi Disenfranchised,
I recently got out my old r800i GSM which was regularly being flung across the lounge by my kids, attached a charging cable and I had exactly the same boot loop issues as yours, but only as long as the phone was being charged. I ended up biting the bullet and buying a new battery and the phone started up. I ended up flashing Gin2Kat and it has been working well other than occasionally reverting back to the same behaviour for about an hour if the battery was completely discharged. The funny thing is when i finally manage to boot the phone at the right point during the boot loop cycle, the battery is only at 2%, meaning during the boot loop the battery is charging for maybe only a fraction of the on-off cycle.
It's a bit of an outlay (my battery was about GBP £10 - ebay). I now play SNES games on this every day during my commute. There are a few quibbles - the audio out port doesn't work (bluetooth audio works) and I get a wifi error but I ended up using Gin2Kat's apk installer to install my apps from micro-sd.
Anyway, it's a bit of a risk but see how it goes.
