Transferring Apps/Data to Replacement Note7

When we get it, will "Smart Swich" do the job, Kies doesn't seem to want to back me up.
Perhaps best just to start clean again?

When I first set up my Note 7 I used smart switch and within a week I did a factory reset because of some insane battery drain. I'm paranoid of that happening again and will probably just set it up, and load everything from the cloud after initial set-up completes.

So it's a cloud restore vs. a clean install. Just planning for the best way to go when I get my replacement.

Most of my stuff is already on SD card, when I moved my files from previous phone, so it's just settings and installed programs, so I may take few screen shots to help in the future settings, maybe do back up to cloud, but probably do manual restore. Google has option, where any new phone will have all your programs automatically reinstalled, but my kids have couple tablets registered on my account and I don't want their games on my phone (already been there). If I figure how to manually mark programs for reinstall, I may use that. Either way no big deal.

When restoring the phone there should be an option for you to see & select apps you want to install on the new device.
You can also go to the play store, under my apps and remove ones you don't want associated with your account any longer, and I believe they'd disappear from the list of apps being installed on the new device.

I'm debating whether to do a clean install and not use the cloud or any other restore option. Don't want to bring in any "cruft" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruft

That was the reason I opted to manually download the apps once setup was completed. I was trying to limit any "cruft" myself and my phone ran a lot better the second time around. Probably had nothing to do with the fact that I did it this way hahaha

Sorry, I should have said easier, you're right you can delete them etc. but there has to be 400 to 500 of them on my account, probably want maybe 40-50 for now, so probably easier to manually download 50 than delete 350 to 450 LOL.

I will backup to Samsung cloud, but I have never used Samsung cloud before so I don't know how the reinstall works on the new device. In all my past devices I rooted them first thing after activating then used titanium and installed all my apps AND data (the data is the hard part to migrate) to my new device. This time I came from a Dev edition Note 4, rooted, but with no root (at the time) on the N7 I opted to try Helium. Helium was able to migrate almost (there were a few that didn't) all my apps and data from my N4, to my dropbox, then on my N7 I installed the apps and data from my dropbox using Helium. I let the texts and that kind of data stay with my N4 - I have probably 50K of various texts over the almost 2 years I had my N4. Didn't want all of that migrated over, started fresh on the N7. So I will be using Helium again. It will take probably a day to get things set up on my new N7 like it is on this current N7. Yes, it's a PITA, but there really isn't much choice. I could keep this N7, and according to samsungs website where you can check the IMEI to see if your phone is one of the effected ones with a battery issue, mine is not, but still I think I should do the swap if it is available. I am concerned if I don't that Verizon and/or Samsung could say they will no longer warranty or cover the phone since I didn't swap it out. Right now Verizon has no N7's to swap to (I called them last night, they don't have any), so I will wait until they do then switch over to the new N7 then.

So I used Helium when I moved from my last phone to my Note 7. It took me about a week and a half after that to get everything the way I want it and I rather not go through that again. When I use Helium it shows that about 1/3 of my programs can not have their data backed up, things like: skype, paypal, Nova Launcher, Samsung Pay, etc. I know if I root the phone I can use Titanium backup to do a full backup of all the apps and data but I don't want to risk putting a Sprint Rom on my phone and loosing everything and I don't I like loosing the ability to use some of the programs that won't work if the phone is rooted (like Samung Pay).
Is there an alternative program that will grab all these programs and their settings or is root my only option? And is there a temporary root option as I would only need it for one session on each phone (one to back up and once to restore)? I know this isn't the forum for the root question but it all goes together with getting my phone mirrored to my new one when it comes in.

Strange Texting Issue

I bought my kid the Note 10+, activated it on Verizon's website and went through the TWENTY THREE Software updates, plus restored all her stuff from her Note 8.
Everything works great - except for one thing. She's not getting my texts. She gets everyone else's and I get hers. She gets my calls, and I get hers but she doesn't;t get my texts - and she has no numbers blocked. Not one.
Any ideas on WTH is the issue?

Not sure.

Tried that, even tried different messaging apps

Factory reset if you did a major firmware upgrade.
Otherwise clear the system cache.
Reset network.
Using SmartSwitch to transfer inbetween different models can cause issues.
Updates kill carrier phones... if still running on Pie, keep it there. Carrier updates are the first thing I lock down.

It's on Android 11. Phone was an Amazon refurb, fully stock. We just used Google to restore her apps. Found a few other people she's not getting texts from, but most of her contacts can text her, no problem.
We'll give those ideas a shot

A network reset and clearing the system cache are fast and painless. Clearing the system cache can cure many strange behaviors.
Try clearing the sim card tool kit app's data as well. It will then repopulate the data by it's self.
There could be a problem with the sim card as well. Always handle sim cards like a stick of ram, ESD can damage them, they have little or no ESD protection on their I/O's. They're cheap so techs handle them carelessly but that can cause you a lot of trouble and unpredictable failures in the future.

Well, we tried everything, including a new SIM card, but in the end, a simple factory reset fixed the problem!

Problem being if it reoccurs. Many times the same issues do if you don't find the root cause.
Unless I'm boot looped or have a significant malware infection I try to track it down.
Some apps don't uninstall clean and you may need to reinstall them to undo hidden setting changes they made. Had a Google(?) book reader app do that; it altered a display setting. Quit annoying.
Sometimes it takes days or longer. Eventually you will usually find the root cause and learn in the process.
If you upgraded to a new OS version a factory reset is also in order. Basic maintenance will keep an Android OS running well for over a year even with heavy usage, at least with Pie.

What app are you both using?
If it is Google Messages and you had the chat features turned on, read this article:

Question Quick Switch Adapter

Can anyone tell me details of what can be transferred from an old phone to a new P6P using the provided quick switch adapter? Can it transfer all apps and their data or only the ones with Google backup capability?

The "ordinary" transfer won't restore your app settings, like your passwords/logins/in-app data.
Google One Backup is supposed to do that, even though it never worked for me. In the end I had to use swiftbackup whilst having root to have a decent backup/transfer experience.

There is some sort of auto-login system that some apps support, so Google logs you in automatically into the app once you first open them after transfering all your stuff, but that has nothing to do with the transfer/backup. Sadly, only very few apps support that.

Thank you, that's what I was afraid of. I can't believe that Google doesn't want to create a proper backup or transfer solution. So bad. I guess SwiftBackup it is...

Been into android since the T-Mobile G1 days and I'm a firm believer in setting up a new phone from scratch. Did my wifes from her OnePlus 7 Pro and the screen would freeze every 4-6 hors. Did a FDR and it's been running great for the last 3 days. Your always going to get bits and pieces from the last OS that don't belong on your new OS when transferring from another phone.

This makes more and more sense now a days!

Google wants to sell the cloud as much as possible. I restore GoogleOne backups from the cloud and I'm usually satisfied with the results.
I used to start from scratch but I stopped at some point several years ago. I just want my phone to work the way I'm used to. I don't use the stock launcher anyway, I use Nova Launcher Prime. Later on, I integrate elements from the new Android version and widgets/capabilities into my current Nova setup.

I never used the quick switch adapter and Google's transfer tool. I always root my phone and use Titanium Backup to restore my apps. Although, on Android 12, I think I'm gonna go for Swift Backup which I've heard good things about!
I'm still using my 4 XL for now, not sure if I want to jump on the 6 Pro with an unofficial alpha version of Magisk :/

I'd advise you to wait at least for the first or second rollout of bug fixes if you are keen on root, as of now there are a lot of software quirks that might be firmware related; if you root now, upgrading to the next monthly update might be a nightmare. As far as I can see right now, every successful root requires a full factory reset (not the bootloader unlock reset!). And every "update" will aswell (maybe the community will find a way around that, but we don't know right now).

100% on board with this. Whenever I clean flash (new phone or new OS update) I start from scratch. Download or sideload all my apps anew. Takes several hours to set up but well worth it in the long run.

Yeah, I've been reading as much as I can about root and it's not super fun right now. It remains to be seen if we can update monthly without wiping. Otherwise, that would be a MAJOR pita.
I'm gonna be traveling in about 2 weeks and I was hoping to bring my 6 Pro with me. My 4 XL is perfectly fine but not sure the battery will last while traveling. We'll see.

Just ordered the 6pro. On my current samsung A71 5G, there was an app to transfer the data, files, apps from
my old phone to the sammy.
I didn't really find one, there were some apps but is there a sure fire way to transfer the apps, files etc from my
samsung, over to the pixel 6 pro, when I get it?

My preferred method is to transfer files from the old phone to my laptop and then transfer from there to the new phone. Then I gradually add the apps back over time starting with the most relevant.

I use Google's own built-in Android cloud backup option. When your new phone gets to the part where it suggests you plug your old phone into your new phone, you could do that - or tell it you don't have the old phone and then it will offer you the available cloud restores for your account.
Edit: I'm assuming your old phone isn't rooted, being a Samsung. Being rooted would give you all sorts of other options like Swift Backup, and Titanium Backup, and others, which when used on rooted phones could backup and restore more app data than any non-root solution.

I just don't look forward to installing all the apps again. That's ONE thing I did like about the A71 and the samsung app that transferred everything from the old phone to the A71. SIMPLE.

When I relatively briefly went back to Samsung (Note 10+) between my Pixel 1 and this 6 Pro, I used Samsung's app to transfer over cable what it could and I don't think it transferred any app data, only apps themselves. Google's cloud backup at least backs up and restores app data for apps that the developers have implemented that in.
I do miss LG's built-in non-root backup and restore function I had on the G3. It was almost as capable as root solutions - it got nearly every piece of app data. I was rooted anyway, but LG's solution was so good I only used Titanium Backup for apps that didn't restore app data via LG's tool.

There seems to have been a lot of people who had problems with their phone when they first got it because they transferred data, apps, etc., from another phone. Heard a lot of stories about when they clean installed everything the problems went away.
Not saying this will happen to you, but might want to think about clean installing everything initially just to avoid potential problems. Just an idea...

I dont know much about the A71 but I upgraded from a Samsung Note 10 to the 6 Pro and used the direct cable option. Inserted sim into the pixel, powered on and followed the screen prompts. It transferred everything EXCEPT some apps that came from the Galaxy store.
Even the files on my sd card were transferred to the pixels internal storage. Kept folder structures too. I have to say I was impressed that I didnt lose anything. Just had to replace Samsung apps with either Google or third party apps.

Used the included cable, got everything transferred, then all the apps that required to be updated by google.
The only "issue" I had was after putting in the sim card (at&t prepaid), I had no cell service. The at&t message
came up, connected me with a semi-English speaking person, told them what phone I was using and LOL, this
is what she said "The google pixel 6 pro is probably not compatible. I told her...ummm it just came out not
that long ago. After giving her my IMEI number, the model number of the phone, presto/jumbo/mumbo and
it started working.
LOL...not compatible. Reading from a script most likely. Also, she mentioned that it won't work on 3G

I'm with the people that say do a clean install. I have ran into too many issues over the years transferring data, apps, media, etc. from my old phone. Also I have found that there were many apps on my old phone I never used. I got my P6P a week ago. Before I moved to the P6P I copied all photos, videos, downloads, text photos, and other stuff I needed from old phone to my computer. I'm not a huge fan of moving old texts to new phone but if you are (like my wife who has 6,000 texts she cannot live without use SMS Backup & Restore. In reality this is a good practice for me to backup. Not a big fan of only having only the cloud. Afer this I booted up P6P and logged into google. Contacts updated through Google. I essentially install other apps when I need them on my phone and move stuff from my computer backup to phone. This might sound old school but I don't like being dependent on cloud etc. when going to new phone. I want my own backup on everything. I also have found I run into less issues doing it this way.

I did a full device transfer using the Samsung app from the Note 10 to the S21 recently and have been having issues with the S21 since. I'm sending it back and have the P6P on its way, and I intend to do a clean install to avoid app data giving me issues.

General Whomp - A Tale of Swift Return (lol)

Kind of bummed, ahh well.
Now that that is unrooting and relocking is out of the way... have to say I am sad about this one. I was excited for it, spent HOURS getting it all setup. You all know the deal, lol.
Ran into two issues that I found that apparently showed up with OnePlus' implementation of Android 12 and persist even still... all this time later.
1. The Display Timeout option is not properly (normally) exposed to things like Tasker
2. Call redirection (for things like Google Voice) is broken
I recognize that these are probably issues that 90% of people don't notice/care about, but they're also extremely well documented and reported in all of the normal OnePlus places. I find it bonkers that after all this time, those issues still exist. I use Google Voice to make calls as needed for business when I am on the move without exposing my personal number (and to avoid carrying two devices). I made a number of calls before realizing that it was not working properly (since it's not obvious).
Coupled with some of the little Pixel things I was fine giving up... eh. Just feel sour about long time bugs like that.
Maybe I will try the OnePlus 12 next year. For now, the OnePlus 11 goes back to Amazon.
Just a little rant into the void.

I can't believe they still haven't fixed call redirection. That's been an issue since Android 12 on the OP9. It was so annoying I just switched Google Voice to prefer wifi/mobile data and used the dialer in the app to work around it.

Yeah... I could work around that... yes, it would be annoying when I am getting in the car to remember to have to get out of the parking lot (off wifi) before making the call... but it would end up ok. Then sometimes (hit or miss in my experience) the call would get messed up when I arrive somewhere and connect to wifi again during the call).
And I could work around the Display Timeout issue using different apps and such.
And workaround this and that, etc. But it's just BS to me. Like... fix these old bugs that you create in your build that don't exist in Android/every other build. Admittedly, I was really annoyed at the several calls I made where I had no idea the wrong number was being shown on the receivers ID. Soured the whole thing for me.

Totally agreed. I dumped my OnePlus 9 for the Pixel 7 Pro and chose the S23 Ultra over the much cheaper OnePlus 11 because of my software experience with the 9.

I would love to try the S23 Ultra, but from what I've read... the hoops to unlock and root are just a pain. Getting an import model, etc etc.
I root for many fewer reasons than I once did... but I still have reasons to do it. Someday.

Yeah I kept my Pixel for my rooting needs (really just for Network Signal Guru) and haven't missed it at all on the S23U. There's no way I'll ever import a phone with all the compatibility issues AT&T and Verizon have with them plus they never have n71 for T-Mobile either.

Every year I think more and more about it. At this point I am using root for 4 apps and only 2 of them matter.
1. Adguard - So I can nicely adblock without using VPN style blocking.
2. Swift Backup because I actually find myself regularly wanting to roll back or recover.
The other two are Tasker, but that's mostly just for self granting permissions, and my file explorer that I can easily live without.

I switched to Brave so I don't need an ad blocker (ads in apps don't bother me, just the nonsense that happens in the browser, and in fact I get free service from Boost for watching ads anyway) and I started noticing problems with backups that included app data so I just switched to Google Backup. I will say though, Shizuku is supported by Swift Backup. You can back up and restore everything except the app data without root using Shizuku.

Yeah, I have needed that app data a number of times... for better or worse, I guess.

I'm selling my OnePlus 11. The software is beyond frustrating and the simple tweaks one can do with Developer Options and ADB are either locked out on this phone or revert to defaults upon reboot. Clearly, OnePlus doesn't listen to their fan base outside of China. The development potential was what drove me to buy this, but it has been a complete disappointment. The lack of wireless charging has also proven to be an inconvenience and I don't trust the longevity of the charging port.
It looks like if you want a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 running clean versions of Android, Motorola and Sony are the way to go.
