Android 8.1 March Security Update OTA Fail Message - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Just unlocked, rooted (w/Magisk), and installed TWRP about a week ago. I'm on the stock ROM with the Feb security update. The March security update is pushing to my phone but fails install due to the previous mentioned items. I'm reading that a few problems are popping up that are contributed to the update so I'm holding off on installing it for now. How can I get it to quit trying to install it and showing the notification in the status bar? You can't dismiss the notification and if you reboot it tries to install the update again..

How did you install TWRP and keep it across updates?

Thanks for the response! I'm not 100% sure what you're asking, but I installed TWRP and magisk while on 8.1.0 and the Feb 2018 security update. A week or two later the March security update was released and pushed to my phone as an OTA but it fails install due to (and I'm guessing) the unlocked bootloader and root. Now I constantly have a failed install message in my notification bar and it won't go away. How can I keep the phone from attempting to install the OTA Update knowing it will fail?

the ota update is failing to install because your phone is rooted. the bootloader can be unlocked, but otas will fail to install if the os is not completely stock.
if you manually flash the march update, whether it's the ota or the full factory image, the notifications about an update being available or the failed install will go away.

I understand the reason it's failing. I don't really want to install the the OTA as I'm reading it has created additional problems. Is there anyway to keep the phone from checking for an update and subsequently failing and showing the notification?

When I got the notification to update, I just long pressed on it and hit the toggle to turn off notifications from whatever it was that it said it was coming from...Google play services I think?
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA Labs

I flashed the full March Factory Image using the bat.all script (-w removed to keep data), then fastbooted into twrp 3.2.0.0 and flashed magisk. No additional problems or any issues at all.

Did you try turning off automatic update in Developer mode.
No, to me that is a no no especially if you have Flashfire installed

same here. no problems with the march update + magisk. i've never updated using an ota. i always flash the full factory image.

Let me elaborate:
Right now, if you install TWRP permanently, you don't get any OTAs. So you must install a full image. When you install the full image, TWRP get's wiped. So you always have to install TWRP using your computer. That's a real hassle for me.
Or is there any easy way how you can install a full image, while keeping TWRP or reinstalling TWRP on top without using a computer?

I'm not sure if this is a question to me or the OP!
Me? No, there's no need as once flashed any OTA notification is redundant and no longer displayed. Anyway, I usually dl and flash the new factory image when it's posted online. The whole process takes maybe 20 mins including the dl time. Also, if there are any "new issues" with a release, as the OP is suggesting, it's just as easy to go back a month with the previous factory image (easier as it's already dl'd)

Good point, it's fairly easy to revert to the previous version if problems crop up. I'm going to go ahead and make the plunge. **edit** installed the March image and reinstalled TWRP and Magisk, so far so good.

Cool. Hope it stays that way.

[Q] OTA JSS15R While Rooted

Currently trying to update my Nexus 7 to JSS15R (8MB OTA that may have helped multitouch issue?)
I am running rooted stock ROM, unlocked bootloader etc. Current build number is JSS15Q.
I've heard the newer versions of SuperSU have the OTA fix built in. I haven't been able to update though. I noticed there was an update and I went to update my Nexus 7. It went to update like it should, but I got an error and it never changed.
Flashed the OTA fix thinking it would help. No.
Forced OTA update by stopping Google Framework. No.
Flashed SuperSU 1.65 and tried to update again. No.
Any suggestions on what I should do? Manually flash the update without loosing root or an data?
Did you reflash the ota after you flashed supersu?
What was the error message?

I read the new SuperSU versions have the OTA fix built in which allows OTA update.
When I initially went to update before everything, it rebooted then just came up with the "open android guy" with an error. Not sure what it exactly said, but I ran into the problem when I updated to JSS15Q.
I updated to JSS15Q by flashing the SuperSU OTA update fix with temporary TWRP. It then went through no problem. I followed that same method this time, but it didn't work.
When I did the j to q update while rooted the ota had an error as well. I had to install the full q rom from google. (I'm stock with root and I changed the system font) But this time around when I got the r ota I double checked what version supersu was runing and its at 1.65. I applied the r ota with no errors.

Yeah I'm running 1.65 currently, but the update won't show up anymore. Check for updates and there's nothing.

If its like the last issue with J to Q. You are updated but it doesn't show the name change in system. I could be wrong. It should have already been downloaded to your tablet. Check with a root explorer to find the ota zip or download the R ota found somewhere on this forum and manually flash it. I'm glad I didn't have to mess with anything this time around.

Not asking for sarcasm, just solutions. Will I lose root or any data? Or is it just like OTA update if I do it manually.

Stock recovery is on my device. I'm temporarily booting TWRP with the Nexus Toolkit so I can flash things.

Next time you have an error with stock recovery (android fallen down) press/hold power, then press/release VolUp, then release Power.
This will show you the error log.
As to your current problem, if your unit won't download and notify you about JSS15R download it by hand and place in your virtual sdcard, then temporary boot into tarp and choose install, selecting the ota zip.

Install the ota update.zip, then before reboot, immediately install supersu.
Do it that way and you won't lose root.
Forced OTA and it failed. I had already flashed the superSU.zip before

Any way to manually flash the update? Because SuperSU OTA isn't working.
So, you modified the build.prop, restore your backup of the original and it will work. Or flash the full factory image.

Now that you mention it I tweaked it with PimpMyRom. I'll take that off and try to update.
I am a bit late, but I tried fixed my build.prop to its original state and I still can't OTA update...
I noticed on stock recovery there's an option to update with ADB. Is there an update file I can use to just manually install the update? I know the JSS15R update didn't do much, but I would like to know for future reference and when Android 4.4 is released.

The same OTA update.zip you used before is used to do sideload in adb as well.
You'll also get the same errors if you have modified files.
If you post the errors, they can be diagnosed.
If you modified a lot of files, sometimes it is easier using the factory images.

Status 7 error, the log is posted in one of the above posts. I use "PimpMyROM" for a short while, which modifies the file. I deleted all the tweaks that went into the build.prop.

Unless you are very careful with your edit or made a backup, you need to get the real file. When you edit, even if you have an extra space left over, the sha1 checksum check will fail.

I'll probably just backup apps + data and use JSS15R factory image. Made the mistake of not making a backup of my build.prop.
Good thing it's a Nexus Device!

Installing OTA update while rooted (Magisk) and with TWRP recovery

I'm on the stock ROM (Build number: OPNS27.76-12-22-3), rooted via Magisk and have the latest TWRP as my recovery. Say, an OTA update arrives (hopefully) in the future, could I just sideload it from my computer via adb? I know that downloading the file and installing it using the phone won't work as I'm on TWRP (it requires stock recovery). Erfan Abdi's website allows the download of the OTA zip from Moto's servers if one wants to sideload it via adb (https://erfanoabdi.000webhostapp.com/). If not, how can I apply the OTA update?
no you can't apply the ota with a custom recovery as you made changes on partitions that ota.zip check if has some changes and i believe twrp is not ready to aply ota in any way because every manufacture has a way to make changes by ota so its almost impossible to made a generic way to apply ota to all the devices that twrp suports

flash stock, take the ota's via ota, and then mod system. At least that's what I do. pita but it works. I back up with TBPro and copy backup to PC (ota clears internal storage) before I do that so rebuild is pretty quick.
my last smartphone is just uninstall magisk and flash stock recovery to aply ota, but i never tried this on moto z play, so you should do a clean install of stock rom first, because i can't say with sure if it's gonna work as my last devices stops update on marshmallow , and magisk that i used on this phone is older

there some things that have be analised here, first when you unistall magisk, the safetynet verification is gonna fail, and pogo can broke, and pogo is especially case, the pogo app checks storage to see if has some folder related magisk, that in most cases are left there to backup. and the ota check partition if you change something ota fails too.
stock ota is horrible to install if you have some changes in the device, so in almost all case, especialy if don't have advanced knowledge about all android work, the recomended is reflash system in same version that you are, and after this update.

a) right. what I said. uninstall magisk is dirty - it doesn't clean everything up..
b) I could suggest TBPro to back up your system. Then be sure to copy that backup to your PC because flashing the stock will wipe internal storage. Then flash stock. Then use TBPro to restore stuff. At least that's sortof what I do.

August security patch is out so I tried these steps.
It didn't work. While I sideloaded the update through adb, it showed that the system was modified and that it was mounted as R/W 40 times, also showing the most recent date and time that it happened. Keep in mind, I flashed the Magisk and Xposed uninstallers and cleared Dalvik and cache before the attempt to sideload.
I just flashed the original June build (omitting the 'fastboot erase userdata' command to save myself from a potential pain in the ass) and then did I proceed to sideload the update via adb. After that, I flashed the latest TWRP and rooted using the latest Magisk (and f2fs fix as well). My data is intact (except for the root modifications and Magisk modules) but that is miles better than starting from scratch off a factory data reset.
I guess I answered my own question, then . You can't

Do you have an idea how to easily display if system is modified (when, how often etc.)? I'd like to know if OTA could succeed after restoring boot partition for some Moto X Play and Moto Z Play with installed Magisk.

OTA failed on rooted device

Hi, I just tried to install the September OTA update based on the Magisk OTA installation tips however the installation of the update fails during step 1. At least I am still rooted on the August patch level. How can I update my phone without losing data? I thought about reflashing system and trying the steps again but I don't know where to get the factory images for 9.6.6.0 (August) or 9.6.8.0 (September). This is my first A/B phone by the way. Thanks in advance.

No, the only fastboot image at the moment is this. It should be not a problem downgrading, as long as the same Android version is involved (Oreo 8.1 in this case).
And yes, you can flash that fastboot image and then follow my guide to install Magisk, and then install the OTA update always following my guide, just to test that everything is working as intended.
This did not work. Seems like using flash_all_except_storage.bat was not the right choice, my unlock pattern during booting is not accepted.

So you must use flash_all.bat, but you will lose your data. At the moment the data is in the phone memory, but is encrypted and you probably lost the decryption key when you flashed the other partitions, so not a great lose anyway.
I don't know if there is a way to get your data back.
Yes, I already did this. Had forgotten to disable the pattern.

You have a few options. You could factory reset, then see if you get your OTA. You could also lock the bootloader, which wipes your device as well, then, yes, you will get normal OTA's. Or, you can adb side load the OTA zip from October, then November, then December to be up to date. Or, you can fastboot the factory images to get up to speed. Or, you can fastboot into twrp, then flash the OTA zips. And there ya go

Have you flashed TWRP? If so, you cannot update via OTA. This only works with the stock recovery.
You have to flash a full OTA via TWRP or flash the factory image with fastboot if you are using TWRP.
And if you don't use TWRP, you still can update manually. Why are you waiting for the automatic update in the first place?
I have unlocked bootloader, my phone is not rooted, when I try to update my phone tru settings and Sysrem update it starts and than stops (couldn't install update)

This has nothing to do with root, but with TWRP. Have you flashed it or not?
You can try to flash the boot.img again, too. Extract it from the factory image and flash it with fastboot. Of course this only helps if you have messed around with it.
If this doesn't work you can try a factory reset or flash the update manually. See https://developers.google.com/android/images for instructions.

Is there an easy way to update an unlocked/rooted Pixel 3a XL?

I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my Pixel 3a XL as soon as I got it. But I've been unable to install the OTA and security updates since (September 2019). I've been digging around in the forum trying to figure out how to load the updates. I was really hoping Flashfire would work, but it gives me errors - something about the root not being available or right... but my root works for everything else I've tried (maybe its an issue with Magisk)...
Anyway, I was hoping to find a simple way to install the updates. Help!
Thanks in advance,
Tom

I have seen postings about people fastboot flashing back the original boot.img, then taking the ota then repatching the new boot image and flashing it via fastboot. Not as simple as you hoped i am sure but it works.
The other way is to download the full image, remove the -w option in the flashsall.bat and then run the modded flashall file. You then need to patch the new boot image as above and fastboot flash that to regain root. I have not found any other ways to get updates besides doing one of the 2 above every month
Thanks, adm1jtg! I appreciate the help.
Unfortunately, I tried the second method you mentioned on my own... but I missed the part about removing the -w from the flashall.bat. Faaaaaaaaaaaqqqqqqqq!!! And ended up wiping my phone.
But now I think I'll remember that -w trick! I love learning things the hard way. LOL
I'm still going to hold out hope that someone will come along and make an app like FlashFire to script the process for us.

Why wouldn't you just side load the OTA and be done with it?? Easy instructions where you'll download the OTA image. Easier than what your currently doing

Sideloading the ota would be a great option EXCEPT he said he was on a much older version... Like sept.
My understanding is that the ota for dec would only contain changes implemented for the month of December, this in this scenerio he would not get the patches for October and November with your method and i am not even sure if it would boot after that mismatch
It's really not saving much work if any over flashing the full version, and with the full version they're is no potential for bootloop due to missing some patches or updates. It's just much safer.

Um... prolly because I'm dumb... and maybe a little because I couldn't find instructions on how to do it properly. I don't suppose you happen to have a link to how to do the OTA sideload thing properly?

The most simple way to update while keeping root would be to follow the instructions for "Devices with A/B Partitions" at the following link in the Magisk documentation:
https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html#ota-installation
Basically, Magisk allows you to restore the original boot image to the current partition so you can take the OTA when it arrives on your phone. Before rebooting you install Magisk to the inactive slot so that when the phone restarts you retain root without having to mess with Fastboot.
Delete Me!
Think all you have to do is click uninstall magisk, dont reboot... Take ota, but before reboot click install magisk/ install to empty slot...
Oops didnt see the reply above
OK, so when this month's security update came out, I tried to following the Magisk instructions (uninstall Magisk, restore stock boot, flash OTA, etc...) but when I went to uninstall Magisk and restore the stock boot, it tells me there is no stock boot image to restore! Dammit. Now what?

This should be a one time issue. One of the latest versions of Magisk changed the default location of the boot.img backup. They released it in December after most of us had already upgraded to the December Pixel update. This means we used the older version of Magisk when we installed the Dec update and it saved the backup to the old/original location. We then updated Magisk sometime later in December, but the Magisk update doesn't move the backup file to the new location (a poor execution from the Magisk team IMHO). Because we are now on the updated version, it expects the boot.img backup to be in the new location, but it is still in the old location and Magisk doesn't check that old location (again, a poor execution from the Magisk team IMHO).
To fix this you have several options.....
Option one is to find the original backup location that Magisk used for the boot.img and move it to the new backup location that Magisk uses. Unfortunately, I don't know where those backup locations are and didn't feel like researching it, so I used one of the other methods.
Option two is to "reinstall" Magisk (choose the patch file option and select the stock boot.img that may still on the phone from whatever the last update was (if you sideloaded the update and then had to rerooted the phone)- or download it from the applicable factory image and move it to the phone) to force Magisk to backup the current boot.img file to the new location. Stop after this initial step (ie you don't actually need to flash the patched file because it has already been done). Then you should be able to follow the normal Magisk update process to move to the January update.
That being said, I have horrible success being able to take the updates OTA (they usually fail) and usually end up sideloading the update. That is the final option - sideload the Jan update and then reroot the phone using the normal root method (ie getting Magisk to patch the stock boot.img file and then flashing the patched file).
