Samsung S9 Icon Frames Issue - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
New to the forum, so be gentle!
I just unpacked and configured my new S9+. One issue is that the Icon Frames-Icons only option only works with particular apps (this was not an issue with the S8). Specifically, I notice that certain apps (Google Voice, Google Calendar, Gmail) all have that ugly white border around them. I scoured the internet and couldn't find a fix. Does anyone have guidance on how to remove these borders? Thanks in advance!

Coming from the S7, I noticed the same issue: some icons are displayed as the setting imply, others are not. I didn't have this problem on my S7: all icons were borderless. I tried turning the setting on/off, restarting the phone with no success. It must be the themes app.

It is not the themes app and restarting the phone won't work.
This is a feature of Oreo. Most icons now follow certain design guides for symmetry including all google apps.

It might be so, but not all Google apps follow this new "feature" of Oreo. For example: Maps, Docs, Slides, Hangouts, Translate don't have the border.

Thanks, all. Is the only way to adjust the appearance to use something like Nova Launcher?

I'm seeing the same issue coming from a S7, doesn't look like my wife's S8 has the problem either.

I noticed this too, how can I restore the default icons, I was messing with the themes and lost them?

Tapping Address in Calendar

On my HTC Desire I could tap the location field in my calendar view and it'll open up gmaps and go straight to the location. The Galaxy s2 doesn't seem to be able to do that, are there any mods or apps that will let you?
replacement calendar
Jorte Calendar does what you need.
It's a full calendar replacement. It's free in Marketplace...

RXP, I had the same issue and looked around a bit. It seems the Samsung calendar app simply doesn't have this functionality. Jorte, mentioned in the post above mine, works well. I have also tried Calengoo and Business Calendar and both work well. I am hoping that eventually someone will work out how to mod the Samsung app itself though, since none of the replacement apps match the Samsung ones for appearance, even when colours are tweaked.
Damn, that's incredibly frustrating. Might have to import an apk from my Desire!
RXP, did you have any success getting an alternative app working? I am still not happy with the alternatives I have tried so keen to find out what other people are using. The ideal solution would still be a tweak to the Samsung app so it fits in with the rest of the phone, but I must admit I wouldn't know where to start.
Alternatively, does anyone know how to get the standard google calendar app working on the S2? Searching turns up instructions for the Galaxy S but not the S2.
Thanks to anyone who is able to help.
Partial solution
I have been trying to find a solution for this and found a couple of things. It seems a lot of alternative calendar apps use the system calendar app for their event view, which means that with the samsung calendar in place you cannot get clickable links even with something like Calendar Pad installed.
I was able to get the cyanogen mod calendar apk working (looks like it is pretty much stock gingerbread) after backing up and uninstalling the touchwiz calendar with titanium backup. There is a graphical glitch on some views where a circle appears in the top left corner but other than that it seems to work well. it also allows alternative apps like calendar pad to load the standard android event view which has clickable links.
Unfortunately I can still not get this to work in the samsung app to keep a consistent look to the apps but thought I would post in case this helped anyone.
I was missing the same functionality, installed 'Business Calendar Free'
- works a treat
I had a look at business calendar and the functionality was there. I am just trying to find some way to get the same functionality in the touchwiz app to keep a consistent theme across the phone. Is there any way to make this change or a dummies guide to exiting the aol?

[Q] No email or calendar widgets except magazine xu?

Is there a way, without downloading a 3rd party app, to get the samsung calendar and/or email widgets aside from what are on the magazine ux, which are a bit cumbersome in my opinion. I'd prefer to have the same widgets I have on my galaxy S5: full screen month view calendar widget, and the default email widget. Is there a way to do this, also, without doing a different launcher, like Nova, which I've tried and don't love.
Odd Samsung would strip these out, but they clearly want to push this magazine ux thing.
Thanks in advance for the help!
I am also looking for the calendar widget. Someone knows how to get it? I don't like this magazine ux

I too was annoyed at this. I didn't mind losing TouchWiz, but wanted to stay stock for potential future updates (please Google change SD card write access) so I downloaded the "Google Now Launcher" to get rid of the Magazine UX (although I didn't install "Google Now" so not to have that pop up on the home screen). I use "Pure Grid Calendar Widget" from the Play Store. If you choose the "4x4 free" calendar you can set the pixel count for your tablet/preference upon creating the widget. I have it around 1550x1550 pixels for my Tab Pro 8.4 and stretched it to fit most of the screen.
I liked Pure Grid Calendar Widget on my old HD2, but didn't need it on my S3 and S5 because the Samsung Calendar was similar. Enable events in the timeline to show descriptions in month view on the widget. I also wanted a full-screen email widget for 2 accounts, so I downloaded Aqual Mail, which looks and works similar to the S5 Email widget. I stretched that widget to full screen too (or square with some app shortcuts below it).
All in all, Google Now Launcher made the Home Screen interface seem less laggy (along with some adjustments to animations in Develop Options). Add in these two free apps (paid version unlocks additional features) and I it gives a similar feel to my S5 setup. I know you said you didn't want to download any apps, but this seems to be the only option (I didn't check Samsung Apps for a calendar though, don't know if they have something there).
***Note: I don't have any apps installed on the SD Card, but some people say that the shortcuts for apps installed on SD Cards disappear from the Home Screen if you use the Google Now Launcher.

Moto 360 notifcation bug, list your apps lets find app in common

Everyone including myself has the issue where once a day my phone stops getting notifications on my phone. It seems to be pretty wide spread but at the same time, some people don't have the issue at all. Which makes me think maybe it's a 3rd party app killing notification. So anyone who has the notification issue list all of your apps and maybe we will find one we all have in common.
To make this easy grab the app "List my apps" from the app store and edit the plain text template to remove the package name and just give you nice list of apps you can copy and paste .

Ok seeing how nobody is responding to my thread let me ask everyone this
How many people with the notification issue are running facer?
When I started having notification issues this was my app list:
- iHeartRadio
- Calculator
- UP by Jawbone
- Whoopee Wear
- Weather WatchFace
- Specialized WatchFace
- Planets WatchFace
- Swing by Swing Golf Scorecard
I then uninstalled all watchface apps and apps I don't use and reset Android Wear and the watch:
- iHeartRadio
- Calculator
- UP by Jawbone
- Whoopee Wear

Thanks for responding. But I Recommend you give a full android application list. Because other applications do push notifications such as Textra.
does acDisplay install on Android Wear? because i only listed my watch apps - which is where the problem is. The watch. Not the phone. At least not in my case.
In my case, the watch was receiving notifications, but wasn't alerting me of them.

I think this is why people wont respond because there are simply too many apps. Each person on here probably has 20-50 that are completely different from the next person. It would take a monumental effort to find a commonality between devices, something that should be Google's responsibility. It will simply be too difficult to filter through all the different apps people are using amongst each other.
The best attempt at self-diagnosis would be to just run your phone in a vanilla state and progressively installs apps one after the other over a period of several days to see if you can break the watch, then you would know which app is causing it. For instance the only apps I have really pushing notifications are Gmail, Google Messenger, and Exchange email. However even then, by just having Gmail connected I am going to get other things like Calendar updates, ToDo reminders, etc. Some things we may not even be able to disable so we'll never know where the culprit is.
Ultimately it shouldnt really be any of the apps since everything worked fine before the damn update to 5.x. Anyone know if it's possible to downgrade to 4.x?

If people would post using the app I mentioned above. I'll sort through and find a common denominator.

Contacts shortcut/ folders

I need to have 3 contact groups, Family, Friends, Work. In the past I have used an old app called smart shortcuts, I could add a shortcut for each folder to my home screen, It works buts its a huge pain.
There has to be a better way
Someone must have a better way?
Thanks
Maybe try a different launcher, I have groups in Nova Launcher for contacts, media apps, social networks apps, etc.
I second trying Nova launcher. A lot of these kind of features are available and built-in. I was always an Apex user, but it just didn't seem to work as well/smoothly with Oreo and S9... they haven't updated it much in the past few years. Nova on the other hand is extremely smooth.
Have you considered using the "edge" feature? It seems to be designed for exactly what you're looking for, without having to put shortcuts on the desktop.
I do use the edge feature for favorite/family contacts but I have something like 80 work contacts I need a seperate shortcut for and another for about 20 friends

User experience questions from a new Pixel 3XL user

After many years of using Samsung phones, I just switched to a Google Pixel 3XL (which is rooted with the stock ROM). While the new phone seems to be quite good, there are some minor ‘issues’ that have cropped up – most probably due to my familiarity with the Samsung devices…
Merging contacts: Using MyPhoneExplorer, I imported my Outlook contacts into the phone. I also configured LinkedIn so that those contacts would also go into the contact list. Unlike the Samsung phone, the Pixel did a much better job of merging contacts. However, it missed a few and I cannot figure out how to manually merge them. How is this done?
Keyboard: One of the Samsung features I miss the most is being able to long-press letter keys to get symbols, e.g., long-press ‘a’ to get ‘@’. The Pixel approach of having to switch to a separate keyboard is annoying. Is there some way to enable the long-press functionality?
Image gallery: The default image gallery on the Pixel is Google photos, but I have no interest in sync’ing stuff with the cloud. The Samsung phone came with a really simple gallery app which met my needs. Is there such an app on the Pixel that I missed? If not, what gallery app do you recommend?
Aspect ratio: The ‘images’ for two of my apps, specifically the widget for Weather Underground and Enjoy Sudoku, are elongated – they should be square but are appearing as rectangles. Is there any way to adjust this via settings or is this a fault of the apps?
Autoruns: When my phone reboots, I see notifications that two apps are seeking permissions. However, when I looked to see what apps are autorunning, none are listed. Why this apparent discrepancy? How can I determine which apps are launching after a reboot?
You can change the keyboard settings to show symbol on long pressing,as for Google photo you can turn backup off.
No idea for other things.

Merging contacts: I have a Note 8 too. I personally believe Google contacts does a better job of syncing and merging contacts, specially if sync is on for contacts. If you could play around with it maybe you will find what suits you.
Keyboard: `Long press for symbols` option in keyboard preferences.
Image gallery: Turn the sync off if you don't want it.
Aspect ratio: Try nova launcher and see if it solves it for you.
Autoruns: What apps need what permissions?

download quickpic 3.4.9.1 <-- this version is just a gallery with no backup/syncing in the background its what i use on all my androids, reminds me of samsungs gallery... (or was it huawei) either way.
i use chrooma keyboard, completely customizable. and does exactly what you want
as for merging im pretty sure this can be done on a PC since its easier might want to go to go google contacts on a pc and attempt to do it there.
Thanks for the helpful replies!
Merging contacts: I avoid using Google products (so why did I buy this phone?). I have turned off syncing the contacts on the phone with the cloud, so addressing this issue via the PC won't work. What is odd is that the contacts stored in the phone app are separate from the Contact app. Will keep poking around on the phone, but not finding anything useful...
Keyboard settings - did not dig deeply enough to find this, thanks.
Google Photos - I did turn off sync, but had forgotten to hit the 'Confirm' button - big duh. Now it is working, will heck it out - and QuickPic as well.
Aspect ratio: I am using Nova Launcher.
Autoruns: The two apps seeking permission are Chromium (I have disabled Chrome) and an app from my local utility company.
