Battery drain - device idle - any solution? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

https://image.ibb.co/fnQ5QH/Screenshot_20180313_092253_Settings.jpg
Hi all
Had my S9 for a few days now and noticed that I keep losing around 10% overnight while the phone is doing nothing.
I have AOD switched on (Like I used to on my S7 which was fine with battery) and have the phone on flight mode.
If you look at the green line on the far right of the graph is where it is draining at night (image attached above as a link since the image itself is huge to fit in here)
Any ideas what's causing this? Any logs or apps I can use to figure out why it's happening?
Thanks!

Might be worth fully charging the phone (to reset the battery monitor). Then using it very briefly and leaving it overnight. Then see which apps are at the top of the battery drain list?
Mine definitely doesn't drain that bad. Here's a screenshot of mine overnight. I maybe had 5% max.

Ok I'll try that. I have a feeling it's something to do with flight mode since I don't see a drain like this during the day but only after I've switched it on. Weird...

Swipe down on your home screen and where it says power saving. Long press it instead of press it.
Or in device management click battery.

Try the same with Aeroplane mode off?
I dont use aeroplane mode and mine drained 4% in 8 hours last night.

I'll try tonight with "do not disturb" rather than airplane mode. Seems like this is a common issue with the S8 too from googling. I'm guessing it's some sort of software problem. I've disabled location permissions with some apps and did a system update not long ago... tbc!

I have also the same issue with my S9 using airplane mode and lost around 12% overnight...
I have AOD disabled during the night and have a S9 Exynos version.

this must be a bug with the modem or something. some german users are reporting this as well.

Same here, cell standby and AOD seemed to be biggest culprits.
Couldn`t get 3hrs of SOT in a 28h usage period.
A phone restart seems to have helped with the AOD drain, and disabling VoLTE with cell standby drain.
And i just got the update (SEE) so we`ll see how it goes from now on.

So guys to give you an update I manually installed the new system update yesterday and tried to use do not disturb rather than airplane mode.
It drained only about 5% this time which is a lot better! Also I've done around 4h24m SOT so far with still 38% battery remaining which is pretty amazing!
I'm not getting carried away though it might just be a one off. I'll try airplane mode again tonight.
One other thing I also did was to block a lot of apps from using Location apart from Google play services. It's in the app settings then permissions. This might be the main reason why it's better along with the system update.
Again this might just be a one off but hopefully not!!

Hello,
I think the airplane mode is actually the culprit. I didn't enable it last night and the s9 only lost about ~4% over the night. I don't know where we could report this issue to samsung.

Yep defo is. Tried it again last night and lost around 12%

I unplugged my Galaxy s9 plus at mid night. It is now 8am and I have been using my phone for about 20 minutes, my battery is at 94%. AOD is off, battery saver is on. My e-mail did sync during the night several times, so I guess that is not bad. It is about the same useage as my LG V30.

After receiving March update and due to some issues, I did reset my S9+, @01:15 hrs activated Airplane mode and unplugged the charger when the battery reached 100%, AOD is active as well
Woke up @07:30 hrs to find that I lost in 6 hours 12%, the battery is 88%
According to the battery usage, AOD used 4% and Phone IDLE used 1%

There is a problem with airplane mode. I would advise you to switch to do not disturb instead. I read somewhere that it's something to do with the modem software since the issue is also happening with the s8.

I use 2% overnight on airplane mode ( 9hrs - and uses 0.2% per hour as reported by GSAM battery monitor) , I also turn location services off as well.

How do you guys switch on do not disturb mode? I went to sleep around 1-2 am battery at 68% around woke up at 9 am with 46% left, that's some awful drain

Galaxy Note II GT-N7100 battery problem

Hi guys, I just got my galaxy note II for like 2 weeks ago. And i've noticed a problem about my phone.
My galaxy note II will drain the battery for like more than 20% ( 20%-25% ) while its in idle. Which means after i fully charged my phone, i unplugged the charger and i used it for awhile more like it was left 92% before i slept. Then the next day when i woke up i noticed that my phone's battery drained about 20++%, it became 79% (i slept for 8-9 hours). I didnt leave it with wifi on. I just left it with 3G & power saving on!!!! This is a serious problem, i mean how is it possible to drain for 20% just for around 9 hours of sleep.
And one more question, how long does your galaxy note II battery last after a full charge with you playing checking the phone for message once for almost every 20 mins?
Normally i woke up around 9am for work and by the time i reach home at night around 12am. It still has around 30% of battery. But today, this strange thing happened. I unplugged my phone around 9.30 am. Starting of the day was okay, it was normal. But right after it was reduced to 60%, the battery started to drain faster. By 8.30am it was already left 25%.
:crying:
GUYS HELP PLEASE!!! AS IM NEW HERE. REALLY REALLY NEED A SUGGESTION ABOUT WHAT TO DO TO MY PHONE.

Yes the battery does drain even as you sleep. Keeping 3G on actually drains more than Wifi. So if you really want to preserve your battery overnight, turn off your mobile data totally. It is somewhat an annoyance that you can't choose between 2G/3G like you do with iPhone. If you still want that connectivity, leave wifi on instead of mobile data.Give it a try for one night and see how it goes.
Are you using any power saving apps?

I just tried again last night and it drains from 100% to 81% from 8 hours of sleep? Is it really normal?
I am using this app callee "cpu spy". Over 8 hours of state time. Only 5 and a half hour my phone is actually in deep sleep. 200mhz for almost nearly 2 hours. And the rest go to 1000mhz and 1400mhz. Do you understand what it means? I dont. Can you please explain?
And im not using any battery saving app. Any suggestions?

You can change between 2g and 3g.
More settings > mobile network. GSM is 2g and wcdma is 3g.

Op have you installed viber by any chance? This app drained my battery quickly even when I am not using it.

Does LTE really drain battery that much?

I will leave my phone alone for about two hours and when I check back there will be 25% battery gone. Is this normal? Should I report back after I've used the phone for a week or so? I just got the phone this weekend.
Lte does drain battery very fast but I don't think that is normal. Are you in an area of poor coverage? You could also have a wake lock. You can check for wake locks with better battery stats.
LTE will only drain battery during use so that isn't your problem.

Ah I see. Well, my phone died before my work shift was even over. It must be whatever the wake lock thing is. Once I get this resolved I'll love this phone!
Better Battery Stats will help you pin point the wake lock. Post screen shots of this app if you don't understand how to read it.

Will do. So far after a full recharge after my battery was dead I had it just sitting on my desk for about 40 minutes and it was still at 99%. I'll leave it uncharged while I sleep and see how it is doing in the morning and I'll post the stats.
Hmmm, it seems that from overnight (About 7 hours) it has drained about 9%. Is this normal? I'll see how it does through work today and I'll report back tonight. It doesn't seem to be draining as much as it did before.

Seems I overlooked calibrating the battery with a power run out since it is a new phone. It seems me letting it run down fixed my problem. Its been about 3 hours and I'm only down about 4%. I'll still monitor it every 2 hours or so and post the results at night.

Yup...that's totally normal for a healthy stock battery without any major mods or tweaks.
That's about 1.29% per hour.
If you want to get that number down closer to .5% per hour, try an app called Green Power. You can set it to turn off wifi/data when your screen is off. You can tell it to wait say 30secs before it does this.
Then you can tell it to enable wifi/data at "screen on" or at "screen unlock".
If you don't use push mail etc., this is a good option to keep your battery drain minimal in standby. You can also choose this behavior for night time only. And...you can choose apps to go into the "exceptions" list...a a whole bunch more fine tuning.

[Q] How is your standby time battery life?

I went to sleep with 100% and woke up with 93%. I left WiFi on, I'm sure that if I turned it off it would improve but I was curious how it would hold up.
Wondering if anyone has tips for improving standby time battery life.

Yes.
I can compare that to iPad mini and Windows Phone ( Nokia N925 and N520). 1-2 % with GMS/LTE on.
Same Here
Yes I am also facing the same problem. Terrible battery time. I charged my Tablet yesterday and pulled it out at 100% at 10pm. I put it on Airplane mode and went to sleep. When I woke up today at 6am the battery was showing 70%. It ate 30% at night doing what? I am very disappointed. On Kitkat 4.4.4 I never had such terrible battery performance.

Same here, on a fresh Lollipop install, wifi turned off during sleep, bluetooth always on, and with only a few apps downloaded. Last night I unplugged my tablet and it was still 100% this morning. Been like this since I flashed stock Lollipop after a full wipe.
On 4.4.4 with a lot more downloaded apps I was getting abysmal standby time. The confounding thing was, power use during standby would be fine for a couple days, then turn all to heck, like to 20% plus per night, wifi would turn on by itself during standby and stay on. When I cleared the caches it would go back to being OK for a couple days, then turn bad again. I had even turned off automatic syncing on every app that I was able to do so.
Couldn't figure out which app(s) were the culprit for the life of me. So now I am adding new potentially problematic app back on at a time to see if I can figure it out.
Here is what happened today. Turned off charging at 100% at 10:45pm and woke up at 9 am to 70% on airplane mode. Please tell me that others are facing the same problem!
That does seem pretty weird. This is my N7 since yesterday morning:
Thats not bad at all. I dont know why mine is doing this. What do you guys suggest i do?
I was on jellybean before lollipop and it had waaaayyy better battery life

Battery life after the 1.4 update

I updated last night. Normally at the end of the day I have over 50% battery left. This morning after only 4 hours I am down to 44%. I have not even been playing with any of the new stuff today. The only thing I see different it the update turned on wrist gestures which I previously had off. I'm turning that back off to see if it helps.
You have to give it a couple of days to settle in. Also, bluetooth is connected different now becuase of the speaker.
Lost another 26% in the next two hours without wrist gestures on. I powered off the watch and rebooted. I have not dropped any more since the reboot so it might be back to normal consumption. Unfortunately I'm down to 18% remaining.

Same. I am getting horrible battery life. 100-0% in 6 hrs with moderate use.
If battery life is indeed much worse, I may stay on current FW. Battery life is more important than speaker...
Will closely monitor. Haven't received update yet.
I haven't notice any significant change in battery life. Bluetooth audio on (however not used actively), other settings equal to what I had under 1.3.
I've noticed without getting the 1.4 update yet that battery life has been significantly worse if wifi was left on. Normally I keep it off and get about a day and half or so with moderate use. Since you guys have gotten the update, are your worse battery life results with or without wifi on?
After rebooting the watch yesterday my battery usage for the rest of the day and so far today looks normal. I have wrist gestures off, but Wifi and Bluetooth audio on. While I was having the rapid drain turning off the wrist gestures did not change it. It was not until the reboot that it returned to normal. I may try turning on wrist gestures again, but i don't find them too practical to use.
The new gestures are cool, im leaving everything checked. Beats me man i just plug my watch for an hour or two and im good for 10-24hrs. Yes its probably going to drain 1-5 percent more because of the speaker, but isnt it worth it? I say yes. Its cool bumbin some music on my watch, i love it. Plus we just received the update 3 day ago ( me just last night) for those of us who flash roms know they take a while to settle. This will be no different id give it a good 2-3 days and your better than before. Also remember the CPU is a mobile CPU, your downloading music? It will put in work man thus draining your battery. So far im loving the update its way fast and responsive now i had minimum to zero lag now when scrollin through apps or contacts. One thing i hate though is the sht i went through to get everything working fine.. ( had to flash another ROM and accept the new permission from the watch) also i woudl really like for google to talk back to me when i ask it a damn question. ...anyone??

I am at 8.5 Hours with 75% remaining. Wifi ON, Gestures ON, Always On Display ON, Tilt To Wake ON, 2 min phone call on the watch this morning, and Dandy Watchface.
I was getting very poor battery life the night after the update and the first half of the next day (yesterday) but a reboot on the watch and my phone appears to have cleared up any issue.
EDIT: Added Screen Capture of Battery Stats (Battery at 74% now)
After I took the ota everything seemed sluggish & high battery usage. Overnight the battery completely drained. After recharging & rebooting the OS seems OK with normal battery usage and smooth performance. So you need to do at least one reboot after updating...
I'm one of the lucky ones I guess, I definitely have improved battery usage. I would run out of battery by the end of the day with heavy usage, and yesterday I used the watch more than ever, and put it on the charger at the end of the night with 38% left. I have brightness on 3 and have rebooted twice since the update. It's 7pm now and I have 62% battery left.
Yesterday was back to normal with 55% left at end of day. today looks normal too with 10% used in 3 hours.
I also noticed slightly more battery usage. Usually by the end of the day I still have 52-55% left. I think power it off and use it the next day. Practically with the same usage, I now usually have around 40% left, which means that I cannot go a second day without charging. Not a huge differene though. Could be better, sure.
I actually also noticed a slightly higher battery usage on my phone. I'm actually suspecting that it may have something to do with BT-connection being more used compared to 1.3.

try rebooting. if not then do a factory reset on the watch and resync.
The firts day i had good battery then it all of a sudden took a sh*t. went from like 60% after all day (8am-7pm) being off the charger and then i noticed i was havign issues with calls and the battery just tanked. A restart fixed it, havent had issues.
I would suggest if that does nto work then do a factory reset. if anything it will just take a half hour out of your time to have whatever resync
As for battery, i'll say other then that little issue, ive had pretty decent battery life. Its improved, but not drastically. I have gestures on, wifi auto, brightness at 4, always on screen set off. i can probably squeeze out 36 hours easily. Normal daily use for me has me putting it on the charger when i lay in bed since i dont need it then.

Battery Loss

I have noticed in the past 3 weeks that my phone rapidly discharges. I have done a factory reset, uninstalled programs that i really don't need, and moved a lot of apps to SD card and i am still losing power faster than i was in say April or even July this year.
Anyone else experiencing this? Not rooted BTW.
Like how fast does it discharge?

Lets say I plug it out at 9am. by 12 midday it has already lost 3-5% or even more. Overnight like 10%. it used to only lose 3-5% overnight.

Okay so I can tell that the initial drop is a bit unusual because even on my S8+ when I unplug the phone from around 8:30 A.M (100%) it drops 1% around 10:00 A.M. or 10:30 A.M (This is with AOD on) and the overnight drain also seems unusual cause for me I face like a 5 - 6% drains due to my social media apps always retrieving notifications.
But try giving this app a try and see:- Servicely It may help you save up some battery. But before you try this app I suggest Like Re-calibrating your battery, the best way to do this would be to fully charge the battery and then drain the battery till it automatically switches off, repeat this 2 - 3 times and then give the app a try

Thank you for the advice. Funny enough, this week I have been making it go all the way down to 6% or so before I recharge it. Also, screen broke in July so this phone is literally 2 months old as I got it July 5th as a replacement. Brand new and in the beginning I was so impressed with the battery usage. Since then, it has fallen off dramatically! I keep hoping an update will change it but not yet, the last one last week for facial recognition, etc did nothing for the battery.
I will try and recalibrate it over the weekend/next week.
Thanks.

No pb, before having an S8+ I had a OnePlus 2 and I was having some battery issues, so the normal battery calibration helped solve the problem for a few months until I bought a new battery for it. And we'll have to hope that Oreo would optimize the battery life

Do you have to turn your phone back on as soon as you plug it in or keep it off? Would it matter either way?
theres battery/power adjustments options in the phone... touch the battery icon

Update: Since I posted this, it was determined by Verizon that the unit was to be changed out. I got the new unit and so far(fingers crossed) I am getting about 2 days out of 1 charge. I liked the suggestion about recalibrating the battery. I am now losing 3-4% overnight when the unit does "sleep". Much better than the 10+% it was losing before. Not sure what was killing it but thanks to all the suggestions out there. I will see if there is any improvement when we get Oreo update.
