Rooted HTC 10 and Samsung fitness trackers - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello!
This is not a problem specific to the HTC10, but I figured, I've got one and it's running LeeDroid's Oreo ROM, so maybe I have better luck here...
Got a Fit 2 Pro, and it looks like a great tracker. Problem is, Samsung's apps seem to detest either other manufacturers' devices or rooted ones. There's this thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...d-samsung-gear-app-android-n-samsung-t3547035 , however it's closed as the apps are supposed to be more 'open' now. However this is still not the case, as on my phone they appear as incompatible. I guess Samsung may have opened them to other devices, but not to rooted ones...
Anybody's got any success using Samsung's devices/apps?
Thanks!

To use Samsung Tracker device with other manufacturers, your best option is to use an app like Open Fit.
You can find instructions for using it with the HTC 10 in THIS ARTICLE.

Thanks, but yeah, I've seen this and it won't cut it... at this point, an older version of Gear is a much better option than Open Fit unfortunately.

Fair enough. Though this is why I stay clear of anything Apple or Samsung personally.
Did you try installing the Samsung Accessory Service before trying to use their Fit App?
Pretty sure it's a prerequisite.

You're right, of course. The watch looked amazing (to me, at least - a great gadget between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch, certainly a couple of steps up from my Fitbit Charge 2) but obviously, little did I know about how locked these are... now I know
Yes, the Accessory Service is installed; with the modded apks it does work with my phone, but all them apps (except for Samsung Health, I think) still appear incompatible in Play. There's some suggestions about tweaking build.prop to fool it into thinking it's a Samsung device, but doing that opens a separate can of worms.
Btw, since we're at it, does Play sniff whether you're rooted or not?
Thanks for trying to help

New Captivate Glide (SGH-I927)

Hey everyone!
I just came over from the n900 camp.
I bought the new Captivate Glide (SGH-I927) yesterday (from Rogers), and I'm loving it so far. It is my first Android phone, though I also have a rooted Iconia Tab a100.
I'm a *nix administrator and hope to be able to contribute something useful to this community.
At the moment, I'm trying to get root, but it looks like I'm the only person in the world with this device, so far. I've tried a few things, but I'm cautious as it seems Samsung hasn't released the stock firmware yet (annoyingly).
Patience, I know. Anyway, if anyone is interested, here are the phone details:
Android 2.3.5
Baseband: I927RUXKJ5
Kernel: 2.6.36.3
Build number: GINGERBREAD.RUXKJ5
If anyone's curious to know more about it, ask away.
If I do manage to find the firmware or get root, I'll post it here.
Try super one click to root.
i'm sure if that device is somewhat popular it will get its own dedicated forum soon.
Have you ever had the OG captivate? Just wondering if you like it better than the original. How is the keyboard and the performance? We just got a ICS port, maybe you shoulda got an og

Trying, but I'm having a hard time getting ADB working under Windows. It's running in a virtualbox VM, so I guess that may be the problem. Still working on it.

Nope. First Android phone.
I'm hoping ICS will make its way to this one eventually... right now I'd just settle for root.
Keyboard is okay. n900's was better. Performance is, well, for an ex-n900 user, unbelievable.
Got my Samsung Glide on Sunday at the AT&T store. They only received two of them and I was lucky enough to get one. I am coming from a Sony X10 which I rooted with Super One Click. I am afraid to do Super One Click on the Glide until others with more knowledge give it a try.
This phone is so much faster and the camera is 1,000 times better (even though the X10 was 8.1 MP).
The keyboard is why I bought it and so far, LOVE the phone!!! Would love it even more if rooted, so hopefully others have luck rooting it.

Tried SuperOneClick; no luck. Looks like the kernel we're running is actually from Honeycomb and I guess they patched the vulnerability zergRush was exploiting.
This is really irritating, coming from the n900 world. Google should really clamp down on this whole anti-root nonsense. It is unbelievably customer-hostile.
Got my wife a Glide on Sunday. Glad to see others trying to root like myself. Super one click did nothing for me also:-(
+1 on rooting this thing. Its only been out for 2 days, but it doesnt seem like many people are getting the phone. It would help if we had our own forum.
Post here so to help the chances of us getting our own forum.

Give zergRush a shot. That thing is rooting just about anything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
zergRush doesn't work; I don't know much about it but I recall it being a kernel exploit, and the SGH-I927 uses 2.6.36.3 (I think the standard Honeycomb kernel).
I'll be picking up my Captivate Glide tonight or tomorrow I think. Hopefully we can find a root. Doesn't look like many people are buying this device just yet. Hopefully we'll get a dedicated forum.
I picked up one of these on Sunday when it became available (I have been waiting for this phone for months!).
This is now my 3rd Android phone on ATT (Moto Backflip, Moto Flipside, and now Samsung Captivate Glide).
You'll notice that every phone so far has had a physical QWERTY kb (I can't stand using touchscreens for typing).
I do have to say though, that this keyboard is my least favorite of the 3 devices (both the Moto's had a much better feel to the keyboards, sort of bubble buttons, not 100% flat like the kb buttons on the Glide).
The negative difference in the keyboard though is not enough to out-weigh ALL of the positives this phone has over the Moto's (CPU(!!!), screen size, camera, built-in storage, etc, etc). Not to mention getting Gingerbread(2.3) over Android 2.1!
Anyways, I too had looked briefly into rooting this phone, and I just began with looking for root programs for Android 2.3.5 (the Glides android version), and I could not easily find one, granted, I did not look all that hard.
I had/have previously rooted my previous 2 android phones though. And even installed the latest CyanogenMod onto my Backflip (that CPU was just TOOO SLOW, UGH...)
I would hope that a dedicated forum for this phone is coming, as it really has potential. I am holding off on the root search for now, and just looking for basics... like USB drivers / mass storage capabilities when hooked up to a computer.
Does anyone have some directions on this basic stuff?
Thanks!
Well, at least switching it to mass storage mode is easy:
Settings->Wireless and network->USB utilities->Connect storage to PC
I agree with you on the KB. It sucks. It's not unusable, but my n900's keyboard was way better. Still doesn't detract significantly from the overall awesomeness of the device.
... except the root issue, which is seriously aggravating.
Your computer should automatically download the drivers needed for USB connectivity.....if that's what you were referring to.

I think the problem is no root access, hence no access to applications that would allow custom kernels to boot. Getting my g/f one in the coming weeks so hopefully development takes off!
i guess your other option is to whip up a rooted stock kernel and drop it in through Odin/Heimdall. Thats what i used on my Galaxy S 2. Good Luck.
I doubt there will be much dev action for the Glide, as they seem to have moved on to SGS II i777. Unfortunately for people who like physical boards, they are basically dead. Android started out strong for physical boards with the G1 and the DROID, but after DROID 2, no carrier has been carrying a flagship device with a 'board. Even the DROID 3, which is an impressive phone in it's own right, was already overshadowed by Verizon's 4G LTE, which currently doesn't have a high-end keyboarded device.
I wish they would keep going with physical boards, but I finally gave up hope and got an iPhone. My need for high-end phones is greater than my need for a keyboard, so I'm admitting defeat.
I was actually going in to att today to grab a sky rocket, and saw the glide by accident. As soon as I saw the physical kb, I was sold. Love the glide so far.

So I caved and bought a Galaxy Nexus - few questions

I know I've made a few topics across XDA (and other forums) regarding my next phone, but after heavy consideration, I ordered a Galaxy Nexus, and the following case in black:
http://www.obostore.com/imak-colorf...slim-case-for-samsung-nexus-prime-p-3941.html
(I just really like the design - not concerned about protection level since I'm great with my tech)
Anyway, a few questions. I've used an AOKP ROM on my G2 with and without a tablet UI for a little bit, so I'm a little familiar with ICS and its features, but one thing I'm not sure of - what apps are specific to ICS and/or the Galaxy Nexus (other than Chrome and Google Wallet)?
Must-have mods/tweaks or ROMs? I haven't delved into it much, but so far, I'm liking ParanoidAndroid for the hybrid phone/tablet support and MIUI v4 for the looks, but looking for anything else is like a needle in a haystack - I have no idea which ROM is actually better/faster than the other.
Disadvantages of rooting the Galaxy Nexus? I know Play Movies doesn't work (but I'm not concerned since I don't use it), but does Wallet still work? Any other apps/functions affected?
Must-have accessories? I'm looking at getting an MHL adapter at some point, but I want to stay away from any docks (at least for the moment) just because of how expensive the official ones are, and not sure if there's any other such accessories I should go for.
Cool housing replacements? I've looked at tear-down videos and the Galaxy Nexus seems really simple to take apart, and I've seen white housing replacements, but I'm wondering if there are any other nice colors available.
Where can I get the official extended battery back/door? From what I understand, the case I'm getting won't fit the new battery door, but by the time I scrounge up the $50 or whatever the kit costs, I'll probably be bored of it and want a new one (not too big on having multiple cases, but I wouldn't mind another nice one just to have a little variety).
Any other things I need to know about the Galaxy Nexus? Don't tell me anything gaming-related - not too concerned both because I'm not a fan of touchscreen gaming, and I intend on getting a used Xperia Play for gaming purposes only.
I forgot to mention that I bought the GSM version off the Play Store.
Anyway, I did a little research, and it seems like everybody prefers the recent JB ROMs - are the JB features/enhancements really that good?

Welcome to the world of rooting
All your questions stem from an assumption / insecurity regarding rooting and trying out things.
There are not that many ROMs out there, learn nandroid, keep a stable copy on the PC. And just try these things out - it's so easy to jump around on ROMs (I've tried 2/3 in one day) that within a few tries you would settle down with something.
Lot of it is subjective, but one thing that remains constant - its safe to root. just follow the guide properly, and do not screw up installing CDMA roms on GSM and other goof ups like that.
happy rooting. (and you can unroot as you probably already know - so its not a one way street)
but then, once u discover the charms - it actually is a one way street
p.s the movies work with root now I believe. I'vent tried but read about it somewhere.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with rooting and whatnot and have no issues with it, I was just wondering if there's some specific exception against it. And I may just load a few ROMs onto the device and try them out before I put my SIM in and start using it as my phone. Any recommendations (other than something JB-based)?

AOKP
CM9
and as you noticed, paranoidAndroid is just awesome (based on CM9. its hard to go to any other ROM after the customizations this one offers in using the real estate of your screen)
can try bigxie's APEX, fairly generic and combination of options
then franco kernel, supposed to be one of the fastest and most efficient kernels out there

New to Android, Just got the ZL - questions

I tried out a family member's S4 and I saw the potential that Android had over apple so I got a ZL for my upgrade.
I am a bit new (I've used iphone 4 for the past 3 years). I was wondering if someone can provide me with some sort of guide that I can read about android, and what I should be doing after getting a new phone to ensure it runs smoothly.
my opinion on the phone so far.
the screen is a little bad compared to the S4 screen. The black on the S4 vs the black on this phone are much different but apart from that, they are both teh same. I like the phone so far, I only need to be able to find the apps that I was able to find on ios now.
Well if you come here then do what most of us do after got an android phone...
ROOT it...flash a custom roms, you can get many in here if you search...then you are done...apps in ios sometimes the same in android...
There are some assential app after rooting just be sure to google it or ask here if to know more...
But rooting need a little base knowledge to do and hope if there is a step by step tutorial, be sure to follow them exactly...but rooting or rather unlocking boot loader will cancel warranty..so it's up to you...

For the time being, I'd advise against the above poster's suggestions. Don't look into rooting or custom ROMs or anything like that if you're new to Android. Android is a great operating system, highly customisable and more fun in my opinion than iOS. I wouldn't expect you to need to worry about making it run smoothly, for your needs, as the ZL is a powerful phone.
Just search through all the settings menus and enjoy the freedom of choice that iOS never gave you. In the standard Android that comes with the ZL (known as the 'stock' operating system around here) you can't break anything, so have fun with it! Download some apps on the Play store, and build up your knowledge from there.
When you're more familiar with your needs, and Android in general, then maybe you can look into advanced options. But for now, they're really not needed. Welcome to Android!

New update for A51 & A71

Samsung has released a new software update bringing a range of leading Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy A series. Galaxy A51 and A71 device users will now be able to harness some of the Galaxy S20 series’ powerful innovations, designed to make the way we capture, connect and share more dynamic than ever before.
https://news.samsung.com/global/gal...features-thanks-to-the-latest-software-update
Update 14-07-2020: Updated received on my unlocked A71.
It's 1842,98MB
It's brilliant that Samsung keeps updating the A series but honestly (probably besides some security patches) there is nothing interesting in this update
I guess that for pictures and videos pro users already use filmic Pro, open camera or port of Google camera
The rest is just gimmick.

What? Prove it then. With links to my posts. I honestly can't recall complaining about this phone. No prove means you're just talking rubbish.
I did not complain about the apps, but I admit I complained about system apps not allowed to be removed (those additional from Samsung). But dude this is always the case with all phones besides android one
I will also complain about Samsung not letting the camera to be fully used by 3rd party apps (I can't get 60 fps videos, and when I set 120 fps, the phone records in 3 fps). Do you buddy think it's fair to purchase any thing and not be able to use it however the hell you want? Jeese... But again, very popular practice.
And now - hang on and sit down - other people complain about the latest system update not me - them. I've put on hold the update as I generally don't update anything.

If you put updates don't hold, don't complain when something else doesn't work as intended.

Dude, you don't even ready what I write or you constantly have problems understanding
What I point out is not due to software issues. It is all intended and common amongst manufacturers. Most can be fixed by AOSP (which we don't have) except the camera limitations. That's entirely Samsung.
Anyway, stop talking to me. Seems like you have no clue...

Well you are right in one way ?
I've seen you complain about system apps and the Google framework in it's entirety, but yeah. Obviously I don't have a clue right? ?
You want an Android One device, buy one. Simple as that.

As for updates , my UK unlocked A71 is still on April 1 update , I know the A 71 will get updates in a " big " lump.. every quarter, but I would prefer incremental updates, rather than a huge update .. if it ever gets here .. i want to to keep stock , romed before ... done it .. hence keep stock

No it was fab , got want I wanted etc.. but I've been there done that, it was good, but took time. hence now just want " out of the box" with nova launcher. It's even helped me get full java games, apps, etc on my Chromebook .
That's why I'm still here, as they say " once you tweak you can never turn back!!"
Being new to Samsung and how they update their devices, how long does it usually take for the update to hit all channels/versions of the phone? I have the Panama version of the A71 and have not yet received the update. Just curious as to what to expect so I don't have to spam the update button throughout the day.

Best options to degoogle G980F?

Hello all! I have a galaxy s20 g980f stock with oneui 4 beta 1. What are my options to get rid of as much as possible bloatware, de-google, de-samsung etc.? im aware of adb debloating, but it has certain lmitations like knox. so what else? Custom rom? Which one is most debloated and 100% functional?

De-bloating is subjective: one man's bloat is another man's treasure. Moreover, aggressive debloating tends to result in broken functionality and it is time consuming to track down the removed package that causes a failure.
Custom ROMs vary greatly in objectives and quality. At the end of the day, the only way you will get exactly what you want is to roll your own.

Well, I cant agree here. I assume there is a common meaning for debloating - getting rid of all preinstalled software that has spying and advertising functions, and replacing it with analog functional software without spying and advertising parts. For example i uninstalled samsung keyboard and replaced with one of foss options.
Now the main and only problem I got is that i was not able to find official detailed explanation of each stock package - over 400 of them. Do you now where this can be found?

This is exactly my point. I actually like the Samsung Keyboard. That said, if you *really" want every last piece of invasive software off, you will likely be better served with LineageOS or some other close descendant of AOSP. For what it's worth, one of the most invasive pieces of software on just about any stock device is Google Play Services. However, without it, most of the Google apps won't work, and plenty of other apps downloaded from the Play Store will have issues too.
The closest I've seen to a list of stock packages I've seen is this: https://docs.samsungknox.com/CCMode/G980F_R.pdf. It doesn't provide descriptions though.
As you encounter .apk files in the firmware package, here's an easy way to determine the package name from the occasionally less than informative file name:
Bash:
aapt dump badging file.apk | grep -Po "^package: \Kname=\'\S+?\'"
Attached is the list of bloat specs I used when building my image for the G986B culled from a variety of sources. It should serve as a useful starting point.
Try florisboard from f-droid, i personally found it perfect. But off course I understand your point, it is common too. I go radical, i deleted google play, framework and all google apps, i simply do not use any soft that requires google, for me its an affordable price for privacy and freedom.
By the way for debloating I am using AppManager from Muntashirakon, in ADB mode. I see the packages there, but no description, so yeah its a hit or miss. But there is an option to disable, then you see what happens and if problems you enable it back. Pretty decent, but not perfect. I wish I could root at least, but i guess need to wait for full A12 firmware and a matching TWRP recovery. Currently device is running on A12 Oneui 4 beta1.
Thanks a lot, I was going to ask you for this, where to start putting together own rom!!
Wondering, why are Calyx and Graphene roms not getting much attention here on XDA? And linux phones deserve some, even though they're technically not XDA..
The g980f in subject I just happen to have, if i would have to buy a phone now I wouldn't consider Samsung at all for the restrictions. Few months ago I disabled Samsung Pay Services - phone got locked irreversibly. I called Samsung and only option they offered is hard reset. Lost some sweet stuff with it and will never go Samsung again.

That keyboard actually looks pretty good. That said, I don't have the patience to fully cut Google/Samsung out of my life.

I don't know that you need an Android 12-based TWRP, but you definitely need a compatible version of Magisk. Modding is generally a lot harder when you're on the bleeding edge, and is further complicated by the fact that you can't roll back the bootloader; you'll never find me on the latest build. It looks like there is a Android-12 compatible Magisk Canary build but I haven't tried it yet.

Because the Android phone market is too fragmented. Any custom ROM is available for at most a handful of the hundreds of actively marketed devices in the Android ecosystem.
Of course the bigger question is why we even need the abomination of an OS that is Android. In short, we don't: Sharp was already selling its Zaurus line of Linux PDAs 20 years ago. Google, however, decided it needed to insert itself into the mobile market, and the rest is history.

Samsung's "security" practices are obnoxious, though at least in the US, the carriers share plenty of blame for phones being locked down. That said, I have yet to find to find hardware that is more compelling--the lack of a SD card slot is a deal breaker.
By the way i am on beta oneui 4, and i'm not going to update to full A 12 yet, so I keep an option to go back to 11 anytime, and there I can go custom rom or root at least.
And the lack of sd card in pixels is the only thing holding me from switching too.. but very little, im actually going to get a pixel 5 as parallel to the s20. Lack of SD card can be partiality cured by cloud storage. I guess its less inconvenience comparing to struggling with samsung's bs..
From what i see online, pixels have widest rom options, Calyx, Graphene, e/OS, so I can experiment and see what works best for me.
