Hi LG guys,
I have general concerns with the amount of dev support that the LG OG series receives. Currently, I am using a Motorola Atrix 4G and I just RECENTLY unlocked the bootloader and rooted it this past weekend and felt a sense of great accomplishment when I completed these tasks after hitting several road blocks. I have to say, I was rather impressed with the amount of relevant information, help, and guides floating around on the Internet a good 1.5 years after its release. I was also impressed with the fact some developers are still working to improve builds.
Unfortunately, I feel a compelled to upgrade my phone since the Atrix 4G does not support LTE. I've been looking at viable options and refuse to go with Apple because I have always loved the Android OS and its possibilities. In fact, I'm even more in love with it now, after being able to put JB on my Atrix.
I did little research and narrowed down my desired upgrade choices to:
Samsung Galaxy S4
LG Optimus G Pro or G2
To be honest, I was set on getting the SGS4 this coming April, however I recently learned that it's likely the S4 will have minimal CM support (if any) and I just can't imagine working with buggy builds for an extended period of time. (I hear the SGS3 still doesn't have a stable CM based build)
So aside from the babble, I was wondering:
1. Is the LG dev community well developed and established? (Might be stupid question to some people, sorry)
2. Does the LG OG line have a stable CM based build?
3. Does LG support the dev community or does it take a Samsung approach (asshole approach) ?
4. How has development and support been for older phones?
5. Does LG commonly make two versions of their flagship phone(s)? [I.E. Samsungs ship with either Snapdragon or Exynos] And which version usually receives a greater amount of developer attention?
6. What's the build quality like on LG OG series? Plastic like Samsung or what? Personal opinions are very welcome.
If anyone else has any info that they feel would further allow me to make a well informed decision, please share it. I know that smartphones are released frequently these days, but I'm still in search for a smartphone that can last me at least 3-5 years (silly I know, but I had a Moto RAZR flip phone forever and loved it). I have yet to find the one ;/
1.The community is given by the users.I guess there is no point in developing for no one, right? So, if there will be many G users, the devs will come too. Right now there a few guys working(thanks for that),but the G(at least the E975 i have) is quite new and it takes time to start things.
2.No, CM is not officially implemented yet.It depends somewhat on 1.
3.Can't really answer that, but,as far as i know, LG is more open to devs than samsung.
4.Why don't you look yourself?Search button is a miracle.
5.No, LG makes only 1 flagship, with differences only in camera, storage and lte modem. There is G with 8mpx,16gb storage+microsd slot and G with 13mpx camera,32gb storage and no micro sd slot. But the CPU/GPU/RAM is identical.
6.G is way better than Samsung's plastics.

I thought about it, but I wanted to get as much feedback as possible.
Personally, if I was going to get any phone right now, I would get the HTC one, with the optimus as my second choice. It will likely have more users and more developers due to greater availability. It has superior specifications, a better screen, better build quality, and supposedly better software. Our phone is great too, just not as new or popular. The glass feels great.

One and optimus are different categories.full hd display vs hd display.compare the one with g pro,s4,xperia z.optimus is top android at medium price.at least here at orange romania, the 975 comes with a super docking station included(LG ND5521).only the dock costs 120 pounds(more than 200 dollars).i payed for my g 300 euros, which a great deal.i could've get the s3 cheaper, but you can't compare them.
I think lg got an unfair bad reputation, since the time lg made phones like chocolate,shine...they were crappy phone, always having issues.but google made the right call and let lg make the nexus4.
Basically,our g is an improved n

Similar specs and similar price in most regions.

I think you should include in your basket HTC ONE (M7) and Xperia Z.
Apart of that.
1. Is the LG dev community well developed and established? (Might be stupid question to some people, sorry) (Not yet, there is a few phones on the market, maybe in the future - People dont like LG, )
2. Does the LG OG line have a stable CM based build? (Not yet, but it will)
3. Does LG support the dev community or does it take a Samsung approach (asshole approach) ? (Neither of them does, but LG seems to be more open about it)
4. How has development and support been for older phones? (Its a market dependent, so, if your phone have been sold a lot, it'll be supported here in XDA, if not, dont expect too much from LG)
5. Does LG commonly make two versions of their flagship phone(s)? [I.E. Samsungs ship with either Snapdragon or Exynos] And which version usually receives a greater amount of developer attention? (LGOG has a lot of model, but basicaly they are pretty much the same, all of them has same processor and screen)
6. What's the build quality like on LG OG series? Plastic like Samsung or what? Personal opinions are very welcome. (My girl has a SGS3 and I'm used to handling it, LG for sure has better built material)
cheers

I wont answer all of your questions individually but If I was to buy a phone in the next months, I would go for Sony Xperia ZL. Sony was named OEM of the year for developper support by XDA staff. They have a decent track report of supporting 2011 onward phones.
I also came from a Atrix. It died from the infamous wifi-bootloop-bug-of-death. The LG Optimus G Pro is a Phablet and it might be too large for you. The S4 will likelly get poor developper support since most Cyanogen staff lifted their nose at it.
As of now, the Optimus G dev community is ok but since the phone have yet to be released in Europe, Not many people are working on it. There also is lots different versions of the same phone with some incompatibility. We have CM for the Canadian version but it's not official. Far from it.
Good luck
As some owners says, the new xperia good on paper and terrible in life.
Crappy screen, performance, battery life, a lot of bugs including auto bricks.
Hi, i have one simple question. Should i buy XZ or Z5 Premium and why? I have Xperia Z2. Thanks
Hi,
Since you are here, on XDA. You can easily see how Sony is doing in the eye of other XDAers. So, as a Z5 Premium owner who likes the phone and thinks of holding on to it for like a year or two, I sincerely recommend you to buy a LG V20 or a Pixel XL.
This phone is not even 1.5 year old (from release date). I have used much more cheaper and older phones, which I have still got every answer for my every question and every possible customizations on XDA (HTC Sensation XE being one of them). None had this much abandonment on XDA. No development, no customization, no themes, no nothing. This phone is beautiful but it is also just "as is". If you are OK with adding and substracting absolutely nothing to the phone, then it's a good phone (then you wouldn't probably be in here XDA though).
The pros are all pyshical: the screen, sound quality, battery life, body material, camera are all a lot higher than the high standards of the flagships (though, none is the best in their categories). If there were some love from the community, at least maybe CyanogenMod (R.I.P.), FXP Blog or Lineage OS. Even Z5 is has not the previlige..
So I say, make sure to look at other options before actually deciding.

I would go for the XZ Premium instead if the XZ, from what I'm seeing pricing is excellent this time around of $ is not a concern...
Now if you're on a budget, XZ will get more updates than Z5p as it's a newer device, I'm not a fan of the XZ look, especially the slipt material back and the plastic side frame (but they took care of that with the XZS that's about to come out.
The Z5p is a great looking phone on the other hand with the right use of proper material and with still great hardware...I'll be upgrading to a XZ Premium whenever it will be out.

Looks like more people went for the Z5 than the Z5p, just by looking how the other forum is more active than this one here and most rom available for the Z5 are also flashable on our Z5p... Lineage is also out recently, I haven't tried it though as I'm waiting Xposed to be compatible with sdk24, so I'm still on MM (RomAur)...nowadays as long as you can get a good optimized custom/stock rom and custom kernel (Zach's Kernel do wonders by the way), you can do pretty much all the UI cosmetics add-ons with Xposed yourself...
Hey Peeps,
I am planning to buy this phone very soon in India...!! As always expecting cool Development stuff to be started on this Phone. If anybody has bought the phone, it would be great if you could spark up the discussion here in the forums.
How good is the Display ?? How are the Dual Cameras ?? Battery Backup ?? stuff like this.
Hello! I'm from Brazil and I bought one, here are my review:
-The screen is very good, does have a good brightness control (low is very dark and high is very clear.
-Speaker is not stereo, but I believe they removed that option on past devices already, but is very loud for a one-speaker.
-Battery can reach to a entire day plus half the next day if you use it moderately.
-Does not have a dual camera, this option is only for G5 plus not G5S - but for a 16mp camera its very good, and the frontal one (5MP) looks it does have decent quality on daylight ( I did not tested on during the night), does have led flash on both sides (frontal led =) and backwards led)
-I tried the dual window function and I left twitch app running in pop-out mode (it like to have 3 windows at same time) and the phone did no have any problem to execute them.
- does not have NFC
-If I'm not doing it wrong if you have the dual version the external sd card can be put on sim 2 slot but you will lose the dual sim function.
thats it, overall I liked the device and covered most of my needs but I really miss a root/recovery and bootloader unlocked at least to use xposed functions which I miss the most. But lets hope somebody help us with cool devs stuff!
Any other question I might have missed, let me know!
Hope to help you in your decision =)
Hi. Got it Today in Germany. I'm very sad about there is Case Available in Germany. I haven't Unboxed it. Its Birthday Gift for my Daughter. Have you a Case or a Link for some?
Gesendet von iPhone mit Tapatalk
Bought it today and so far I'm loving every aspect of it (my previous one was a Moto G 2014). I just really wanted to install TWRP and root but I only found methods for the G5S Plus. Does anyone know any way of doing it?
Got the phone for a few days now after destroying my Sony Z3 compact and like it so far. Camera and screen are very nice. Battery lasts 2 days so far, now at 29% on the 3rd day.

Not true. I used NFC to start the migration from the old phone.
Hello all!
Got G5s a couple of days ago; I'm moving from a Nexus4 and I was looking for an Android stock experience.
Pretty satisfied of phone: good screen and general usage, I'm loving fingerprint sensor and gesture associated to it!
I'm waiting for G5s modding because I'm missing root I hope G5s' threads will populate in next days...
I'm only disappointed about battery duration (just a full day, not more than this) but I have a strange battery consumption by 'Google Play services'... anyone has the same problem?
- Very pleased with the phone. It's less bulkier and does look better in real life than in review video's on youtube.
- Battery lasts almost two days and a turbocharger is included.
- Screen is beautiful. Had my S7 edge on 1080p default and in my opinion this is as good.
- Fingerprintreader is great and extremely fast (compared to the S7edge) and I like the swipe thing.
- Loudspeaker could be better but it's okay
- On apps like Plex and Netflix I do not loose my connection with the chromecast anymore
- Love the almost stock UI and the moto features
- 16mp camera is okay
I did install the moto key apk from the X4, so I can login to websites with my fingerprint. Lenovo should have made it available to the G5S too, because it just works, so why not include it.
Looking for a good phonecase now. Any suggestions?

Sent from my Motorola Moto G (5S) using XDA Labs
Where is AOSP Extended? RR? Viper OS?
Bunch of reasons, though the primary one that I would guess is the phone is bootloader locked for Verizon. I'm not sure how wide spread this phone is on other networks at this point that are unlockable, but the most are probably
on verizon. I stopped using the nexus line when it stopped. Moto phones are close to stock and with the projector mod, a cheap entry price deal from verizon, I took a risk and went with this phone. My most durable nexus phone was the 6, which was made by motorola. I'm loving the quality of the phone and the battery life. I even picked up a dirt cheap moto z play on craigslist and love it just as much and its even better battery.
If you really care about custom roms, you gotta do some research and follow the developers, not necessarily the other way around. I'm not sure what I am going to do in a year for my next phone, but I do liked trying out the other vendors.
I feel, there have not been many buyers of the Z2 Play, hence the community support for this smartphone is quite low.
Before the Z2 play i used to own a Galaxy S4 mini, which has great support till date, and threads for different Custom Android versions of Viper, XenonHD, RR,AOKP, AICP, are still active.
There are a lot more Custom Android versions for the s4 mini but they have got inactive only some months ago.
Even now development for Android O version for the S4 mini is going on.
The main reason according to me is, s4 mini got a lot of buyers, and the small form factor plus the removable battery made a lot of its users stick to it , and luckily a lot of them seem to have been Android developers .
Is that because phone is relative new?
I hope soon this changes!
So I guess I will keep using my rooted Droid Turbo.
I guess I wrongly assumed that since the bootloader could be unlocked, there would be developement.
Don't get me wrond. I totally appreciate what has been accomplished!
I am grateful for root and TWRP!
I find it hard to believe that Motorola/Lenovo has not posted the stock firmware for this device.
I really like having a rooted phone, mostly for the ability ot install dark themes. I really hate white backgrounds and status bar icons.
I prefer Motorola phones. I wonder what my next phone will be...
I will surely wait until stock firmware is actually available, prior to purchase.
A few days ago they (Lenovo) released the kernel source code for Oreo so that might help some devs to start developing for our device if they want.
We're not gonna see a lot of developer support for the device for one reason: not a lot of people have a z2 Play. At least, not enough for devs to actually care about supporting our device which not enough people are using it to garner enough interest.
It also helps that the z2 Play was a push in the wrong direction towards battery life and thus, most potential buyers, most of which are going to be Moto Z Play owners, are gonna stick with their current phones.
Hi there, long time lurker here and Z Play Custom ROM user as well, mainly the AOSP 8.1, 9 and LOS16 (currently on the phone). So I have recently been planning to switch to X4 due to the official LOS16 support and I like the form factor of that phone a bit more (slightly less tall). Recently I have been thinking to maybe contribute to the community by donating my Z Play as developer device so that maybe someone can bring a stable Android 10 ROM. So to start this off, I am willing to donate a Z Play XT1635-02 version to a very dedicated developer, under the condition that it will be used as a developer device only. I am not sure if that will be possible or a smart thing to do, but I guess ideas start like that and maybe the community can chip in, etc. The phone is 10/10 condition with battery still giving me 10hr SOT+ and amazing standby but it's not a G phone so just pure LOS16 flash with Magisk and few modules, one being the ACC module to limit battery charge to 80% and also I think it controls the current if the stock charger is used. The phone looks and feels brand new and is located in Canada.

Yes, probably my #1 choice and maybe Alberto but I think he moved on to a different device. It would be good for a developer to respond here and make a statement or some other senior member advise them of this opportunity. I would be willing to pay for shipping, or split the shipping or some form of donation for shipping would be nice too. It's a team effort, the way I see it.
