Can one Gadget (AKA The Desire) do it all?

Hey People, the more I use this excellent phone the more I wonder can it really replace all of my gadgets on a day to day basis?
I wrote a piece on my blog about this in detail, but what do you think?
Gadgets I use the most on a day to day basis are:
Laptop - Internet and E-mail
Camera
Sat Nav
Phone
PMP - Music and Video's
My verdict was 99% a yes, and close to 100%.
Any thoughts!

It can do VOIP/SIP over HSDPA extremely well with a little help from SipDroid which I just set-up. Yay, for the Desire. ^_^ And for cheap calls!!
As for the laptop replacement it's quite adequate for my morning commute to work but when I need to do something fiddly like setup my PBX I prefer to tether my laptop.
As for replacing everything else, yeah pretty much, although whether it can replace one's girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other is a matter for debate.

LOL since when has ones, Girlfriend/Boyfriend etc, been a gadget? (why do I feel like that will spawn innuendo?)

It could, if the battery technology was at a point where the phone could last a decent amount of time when playing videos, music, making calls and surfing. If you do everything on your phone it zaps the battery. That's why I'm keeping my cowon s9 for video/music use.

That's a valid point. I spend a lot of time on the road in my car, so a car charger helps with that!

yes i think that HTC DESIRE is the AIO device anyone needs. but the concern and main problem is here too....if i use all the features all day i only get up to the evening max...then charger is on

So would you compromise the look to interoperate a bigger battery? That's the question here?

I think I don't need extra battery, it can last for one day if I use all it's features

I couldn't compromise on the shape, I'm hoping that a 2000mah + extended battery that is the same size will be released. I've actually been using my laptop to charge my desire on the go, lol.

i must say that its replaced a my ipod touch and n97 (email client on n97 was poor, video playback wasn't great and music player could have been better and sat nav was far too buggy) but i have to say i've been really taken with it, picks up emails faster than my outlook does for gmail, screen is fantastic, battery life is roughly the same as my itouch after a day's usage and since google maps navigation has come along its become even better! hopefully a bigger battery will be released soon as mentioned above

I have been a big PC user for most of my life and found I spent many hours on it each day catching up with whatever is happening online, etc.
Since getting this phone, I've actually found I spend half the time on the computer as I used to. I can happily be elsewhere and be able to catch up on forums through my phone with no discomfort
Technology is meant to make life easier and more efficient. The desire has certainly done that for me.

Battery , for me, is the biggest issue.
If we can get a better battery, it would be superb.
I use the phone a lot. (I haven't made a single call with it yet either as my number has still to transfer over).
But, I don't manage to last the whole day without needing a charge early evening.
I think once the novelty of the phone has worn off it will be better, but even then, it's not as if I've been using it so heavily.
Small amount of Satnav to test it out.
Fair amount of internet during the day (switching between mobile data and wireless depending on proximity of wifi network).
Screen more often than not turned almost all the way down, unless light doesn't permit.
I never get through a full day without a charge...
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Are there any apps which export the phone's current settings, so that the set-up can be analysed by others (like the nice people on here) in order to work out a more power efficient set up?

You will see looking around these forums there is a lot of discussion an battery life! Personally I find that there are certain Apps that seem to drain my battery very quickly. One culprit for some reason seemed to be the 'Sky News' app? I dont have a list of apps that cause it but like I said read a few of the battery threads and it will give you some idea. The Sat Nav is a huge drain on the battery, and even when connected to my current car charger it drains quicker than it charges. I know why, its because my car charger is only kicking out .5a unlike the required 1a that the device needs (needless to say a better car charger is on its way).
But normally I can get a day out of it no problem. And If I use the Sat Nav its gonna be plugged in to a charger anyway...

I am happier with my Desire than than any other gadget I'be owned. The only problem is memory for apps. I'v havent got that many but I'm still short on space. what's the point in having a superphone if you can't show it off? I have 8 gig memory card but can't use any that space for apps! Madness!
Apps are limited un production by this and won't be a real co.tender to the iPhone appstore until it's solved.
If anyone know how to get apps on to SD on the desire please let me know. Would make this thing pretty perfect.

Desire can replace a lot of gadgets but it's definitely not a replacement for a laptop or a camera.

IMHO, no. I've used it for a few weeks now, and at one point considered replacing my current phone with it but...
1. Appalling battery life, maybe a working day of usage, and if I'm having to put it on charge in the evening, I'm not using it.
2. Lack of stability - applications crash out at random, shutdowns frequently hang. If I have to take the battery out to reset it, a real pain if I'm out walking, it's not ready for frontline use. While I've been typing this, the browser has completely locked up.
3. Flash memory shortage; when it's rooted, or the OS supports install-to-card, this won't be a problem, but I'm not prepared to spend a lot of time managing memory. If I need to spend a lot of time maintaining the device, I might as well use WM.
4. Odd Calendar syncing - I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I want control of how my calendars are synced to the device; Android doesn't give me that. If I want to look back a few months and check the last time I took a leave day, it may not have synced. Shabby.
5. GPS - I imagine Copilot works well on this, but a few hours testing Google Maps Navigation at the weekend really brought out serious flaws, particularly when passing through areas with no cellular data coverage. A SatNav system has to sit in the dashboard mount and just work reliably for the whole trip or it's worthless, GMN didn't.
It's a nice device to play with, and there are some good, useful applications, but I need a reliable phone, and this isn't it. Hopefully the Evo will be.

Hacking the Sony Liveview

Despite the bad reviews I picked up a Liveview yesterday. Was $50 brand new off Craigslist. And surprise surprise, it turned out to be a turd. Well, I don't like to waste money, so I set about modding it. Thought some people here might be interested to see what I did.
So far I've waterproofed the case. Next I'll be building a better strap, one that doesn't make it huge or block the USB port. http://www.jax184.com/projects/liveview/liveview.html has everything I've done so far on it.

Nice i got that thing and it "worked" but still with the having to restart it all the time was very annoying but i ended up sending mine back

So I've been using the Liveview for a couple days, or at least trying to. Even after doing a full reset of the device, reinstalling the software on my phone and removing all the plugins, it has a battery life of about 6-8 hours. In that time I turned the screen on twice, and it briefly lit up to tell me of an incoming call. No texts, no alerts, and I don't have farcebook/twatter/etc turned on. It sat 2 feet from my phone the entire time. If I actually try to use the damn thing to, say, control the media player, the battery goes dead in 2 to 3 hours.
Pathetic...
I've decided I'm going to build it into a custom case for a friend of mine with a much larger battery, since the stock one is completely and utterly useless. So much for my gasket job...

Not sure if the battery is just dying on yours or what but if I never touch the screen, mine lasts for a couple days at least (and that's with alerts!). Sad to hear yours has issues :\

Mine's brand new and running the latest firmware/software with the bare minimum of functionality enabled, so I'm as confused as you.

I have a liveview and i absolutely love it. I dont have any connection issues but i mostly just use it as a watch with out having it connected over bluetooth and the battery lasts for days when i do that. I do have an issue now where i dropped it and the select button on top doesnt work anymore

Can I connect multiple liveviews to my phone?
I just bought 4 of them for $15 a pop !! Sweet
I know I can use it with torque which is cool
what else can I do with them? Can I run album art to it from say player pro? or Pocket Casts?
is there a decent list somewhere of "interesting" things you can do with the little buggers?

Hi, do someone know the dimensions of the battery, because i have one with death batt. and need a replacement.

nice mod! Based on the pictures I can see the battery size in case I need to replace it, by the way using notifications my watch last 2.5 days, using a plugin last only 30minutes or less

+1 I just got one for $15, I wanna find some cool things I can do with it. What have you done to set yours up?

its a pain in the freaking butt. cool potential poor execution.
it constantly gets disconnected when something goes wrong ON THE DROID SIDE. terminating the app and relaunching it solves the problem for X period of time (few hours ??)
the most convenient access is also the worst designed. the watch band. YOU CAN NOT CHARGE IT WHILE IN THE WATCH BAND.
what freaking moron though that was a good idea to force us to remove it (VERY difficult) to charge it.
if the software bugs get worked out I may look into modding the stinking socket so I can charge it while in watch mode (thinking of RIVETING the case to the band) then I won't need the little watch pin thingy that is keeping me from charging it while its in the watch band.
and there is just not that many "cool" apps to use for it yet or the few out their are poorly executed.

2 Generations of Liveviews
Just to be clear, there are 2 versions of this device floating about... The older one goes for around $20 and is not much more than a novelty... The newer model runs around $100 and seems to have fixed the battery life issue... One should look at the Pebble once it is available as a possible alternative...

I started creating a usable gui for the openliveview project. Theo openliveview project is an open source reimplementation Of the liveview app.

Where can you find one for 15 bucks? Even if it did nothing, I'd want it for 15 bucks, just to have as a key for my phone using tasker. I supposed I could get any old bluetooth headset, but I wanted something wearable.

Yeah, $15 is AWESOME!
$18 with Free shipping on ebay buy it now is the best price I can find so far.
I bought four of them and donated 2 to the local hackerspace.
Would be wicked to control more than one at once. I'm trying to find some chick to wear two as earrings.
Perhaps one controlled with Sony app and one Open Liveview App each for one mac address.
Contrary to earlier post, I seem to be able to have both Sony and Openliveview apps installed at once (though haven't tried RUNNING both) yet.
My battery life across the two that I've evaluated and (a third I lost to the ocean) seems significantly better than the average reported above.
But a LOT of variables have changed since the OP. New firmware, new app, new phone, new bt stack, new android versions...
My impression IIRC is that this thing is ROCK SOLID on CyanogenMod7 or CM9 on evo 3d.

Moto 360 after several months of use, my findings

So I've had my Moto 360 for about 4 months or so now and wanted to just say a bit about my experiences with it.
The battery life for me at first was a bit of a problem and it was touch and go if I could go a full day. I don't know if this is because I was fiddling with it so much or if later versions of android wear optimised the battery better, but now I could probably go a couple of days without charging.
I find the standard launcher on android wear quite cumbersome and pants. I've since installed Android Mini Wear which is infinitely better. Unfortunately this doesn't replace the stock launcher but works side by side to it, so you can sometimes end up swiping one way and launching Mini Wear and then swiping the other way and getting the stock launcher, then you have to close both to get back to the main watch screen, bit of a pain. But the devs for Mini Wear say they are working on a way you'll be able to press a small button that shows up on the watch face to launch the full Mini Wear app draw (they currently have this feature but it launches a cut down version of Mini Wear).
A few things I'd love to be able to do with android wear is be able to adjust the timeout screen duration, sometimes it flicks off before I can do what I need to. Also being able to adjust vibrate duration wouldnt go a miss either.
Lastly I've started getting a pain in my wrist, I'm hoping this is unrelated to my watch but I'd be interested to know if any other users get it? Maybe the heart rate monitor constantly reading my pulse could be causing this? Shame you can't stop this from happening as well.

I see some people wear a watch very tight, I myself a personal preference always wear it abit loose like jewelry or a bracelet, I've worn Swatch's for years so maybe I'm just use to it. Never pain.

I've been wearing it since the week it came out. No pains in my wrist from it. I wore it tight with the leather band, and just tight enough that I can't fit my pinky with the metal band. My back is cracked and the plastic pieces that adapt the metal band in are broken and missing pieces, but the screen is pristine after a year, the battery still lasts a whole day, and it's never felt sluggish to me. I don't use a launcher - I don't see the need for one. I pretty much don't use apps - unless it's a card, the face switcher or stopwatch/timer I don't use it.
I love my 360. The 360 V2 is a slight incremental upgrade really offering nothing over the 360 except a much better placement of the crown and the band lugs. I won't be giving up my original 360 for a while.
Though I know my next watch WILL be a Moto watch, because nobody else does wireless charging and I refuse to give it up.

When I first got my 360 the battery life sucked. For an unrelated issue I had to reset the watch, and decided to click "No" to the Google Fit permissions during setup. This has drastically improved my battery life. I'll easily get to the end of the day with more than 50% battery, and that's taking the watch off the charging cradle at 6:40am. So, pretty good! And, the funny thing is, it's the Moto Fit app that's checking your heart rate in the background, not the Google Fit app. So, even with Moto Fit firing up the heart rate sensor all day the battery life is still awesome. Seems like some poor optimisation of the Google Fit app to me. And, on that note, I haven't noticed any pain in my wrist at all and I've been wearing it every day for about two months now. Maybe its an RSI from playing with the watch too much hah

just got a 360 with 5.1.1 and battery life does suck indeed. Going to deny G-Fit and see what happens, I am hoping for a drastic battery improvement at least 2 days. Right now I can barely get one.

I killed google fit, turned off the gestures and ambient mode and I can squeeze out 48hrs between charges.

Hah, glad it made a difference! Genuinely surprised how much impact Google Fit has, makes an amazing device seem like junk when it's running

Heyo! Looking to get into the smartwatch market this holiday and I figured a $99 moto 360 (if I can find them in stock) would be a nice way to do that. So, is this still a good buy in 2015? I have read the OMAP processor is slow and ancient but, does it get the job done on this watch?

I also have this doubt.

I'll be honest, I got the first gen 360 a few weeks ago because of a credit from Sprint and really wish I would've just put a few more dollars with it and got the Huawei watch.

For $99 you can't really go wrong. Yeah the processor might be a bit long in the tooth, but I don't really have any issues with mine. Plus the 2nd Gen costs loads more and doesn't really add any new functionality apart from looks.
I just find having mine really convenient, with my job I can't be looking at my phone all the time, so its perfect for me. I also find the ability to control music on my phone with my watch very handy when commuting. I'm now about to purchase a set of bluetooth headphones so I can listen to music stored on my watch. I'm in the minority who actually use Google Fit (I charge my phone every night but usually have around 40%-50% of battery left). Its just had strength training incorporated into it, so it can count how many sit ups, press ups or squats your doing, which is useful.

Even better now with the 6.0.1 update! Great value.

No Keyboard

I decided not to get a keyboard at least for now.
I am using the Pixel C to stream media, play videos, read books, and play games.
I believe the keyboard would just get in the way.
Anybody else going tablet only ?
Is there some reason I should reconsider and buy a keyboard ?

Haven't picked one up myself, but when I do, I will most likely be going tablet only, as my use cases are pretty much the same as yours. I don't need a tablet for productivity. If I need to type a paper or massively long emails, I'll use my laptop. If I need a keyboard, my $20 Anker BT slim keyboard should work just fine.

Same here, and doubt I'll pick it up. It's definitely a media consumption device for me rather than for creating. My 13" laptop is portable enough for creative stuff on the go and (should I need both) my Everyday Messenger Bag has slots for each.

Went tablet only here as well and LOVE this thing so far. Used it over the wee-end for some Netflix, YouTube, casual browsing, news reading and casual gaming (i.e. candy crush and the like). I might get the keyboard if they lower the price point a bit (200 CAD is pretty pricey for a keyboard tbh, hoping they'll have some sort of boxing day deal on the Play store maybe?) but really, what I wanted is a good, 10 inch, pure Android tablet and Google definitely delivered. The only 2 things I can sort of complain about so far is that the speakers kinda suck and the screen is a tadbit on the pink side for my taste but not a deal breaker for me, I am keeping the tablet for sure.
Battery wise, was at 100% Sat morning and 43% on Sunday evening, no complaints regarding battery life here (much better than what my N9 could do on Lollipop or even on Marshmallow).

I will do the same, no keyboard for me! Will use the Pixel C for some gaming, videos, web and reddit. I really hope Google will sell this device to Sweden

I need a screen protector for sure though. And a folio case of some kind to just use to kick stand it and support some of the top heavy weight while holding it and gaming lol.
Had it gaming for 4.5hrs straight on Marvel Future Fight before it needed to be plugged in lol

Hmm, so I am the only 'dumb' guy here, with the expensive keyboard? Well, I don't have a laptop and use it with ownnote and other typing stuff.
The magnetic system is neat too, the pix wakes up if you relocate the keyboard to the tablet and its very stable and doesn't detach by itself.
As for youtube and so on, I found out that its pretty convenient to lay it down on the chest with the attached keyboard.
Sure if you have a dedicated notebook, that keyboard is likely far too expensive.

Going to revive this thread because this is exactly what i came here looking for. My office computer is an always-on Windows 7 desktop. I've got the 2nd gen Chromebook Pixel, which ends up being my primary computer. I use CRD to access my office computer whenever I need something Chrome doesn't provide, which is really not that often. I've been very tempted by the Pixel C since it was announced, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. With the 25% off option, I'm right on the cusp of doing it.
I rocked the Nexus 7s (both iterations) for years and loved having those. My '13 was one of the unlucky models to suffer the Lollipop brick issue, and I've been without a tablet since. I would love another Android tablet, especially something high-end like my CB Pixel. Obviously, this one fits the bill.
I'm curious if people are still running around without keyboards and no second thoughts. I can't help but think that, if I were to get the keyboard, I would end up with a lot of redundancy between the two Pixel devices. I'd love to hear thoughts.

Should I get a Moto 360 for a very good price? and a list of questions

So there is a guy selling a used Moto 360 v1 black in excellent condition and the battery has no problem with a day of juice (from what he said).
No cracked back either.
I am thinking to get a smart watch because I am bored of my classic watches, one got scratches on the glass and the other is boring.
Why the Moto 360? because I want the bigger screen possible as I have a bit trouble reading LCD screens with small fonts.
Here my questions:
-How easy the back can get cracks? Jogging with this watch for example is a bad idea?
-Is it true latest updates made this watch much faster and lags are ironed out?
-About battery cycles, if I use tilt to wake will it empty the battery too fast?
-I saw complaint about the battery completely dying after 2 years more or less, are all Moto 360 v1 having this problem or it's lottery?

I've had a Moto 360 since shortly after launch, and it's still working on its original battery (though it only gets one day now, not two, and my main use is for checking the time, weather forecast, and sometimes alerts — definitely light use).
I've always used tilt to wake (wasn't even aware that could be turned off, except by putting it into theater mode). It's pseudo-ambient display mode will drain the battery much quicker, though.
I've heard the back cracking happens to folks with small wrists, which isn't me. Back on mine is fine.
Haven't had any lag problems since the first updates, but again my use is light.

I've had a Moto 360 since shortly after launch, and it's still working on its original battery (though it only gets one day now, not two, and my main use is for checking the time, weather forecast, and sometimes alerts — definitely light use).
I've always used tilt to wake (wasn't even aware that could be turned off, except by putting it into theater mode). It's pseudo-ambient display mode will drain the battery much quicker, though.
I've heard the back cracking happens to folks with small wrists, which isn't me. Back on mine is fine.
Haven't had any lag problems since the first updates, but again my use is light.

Yeah, all that true but most likely - forget about upgrading to 2.0
