To start, I've mentioned this in the ROM thread and no one ever got back to me. Twice. Not sure if it's a ROM issue or a permission I accidentally blocked when sweeping through system and app permissions.
ROM: freedom os (obv rooted)
Problem: notifications only show up on a few applications. In particular, LINE and text messages. No other apps on my entire device gives notifications at all. What I've found is that when I'm USING the apps, they'll show the notifications. Also sometimes after rebooting my device, all my notifications that have been "collecting" since last reboot will all go off (which leads to it making notification sounds and vibrating for a good five minutes).
I've tried googling this like crazy and can't seem to find the resolution. Again, I feel it's probably something I accidentally blocked when I shouldn't have, so any guidance would be appreciated!
Did you try going to settings->battery->battery optimization and setting the particular app to "don't optimize"?
Or in the same settings menu, you can completely turn off the battery optimization from the 3dot menu.

Sorry for the late response - I thought this emailed when a response came in lol. Anyway, yup I had made sure that wasn't set. As for completely turning it off, the 3 dots has "advanced optimization" which only has one switch, "Advanced optimization - restricted background activity of apps more aggressively..." which is turned off right now.
Still having this issue ( Afraid I'm gonna just have to wipe w/ another rom, but I like this rom minus this one issue so far

At first I thought I was the only one suffering from this annoyance, but then I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgvTFu6UKJI
See, the problem is that whenever I send or receive a message, this icon pops up. At first I thought I was delusional, but then it repeatedly became clear that this was truly a bug. I managed to get a screenshot of it (which was really difficult considering that it only pops up for about half a second). I want to know if I anyone else has had this issue, and whether or not someone found a workaround from it popping up. Anyone at all?
Are you using Hangouts?
Nope! Stock everything, and unrooted. Using the HTC messaging app

Probably Carrier IQ for some reason tracking your location. My LG G2 does the same thing.

This bothered me as well, but I have since gotten rid of it. Granted that you're rooted, you can download an Xposed module called NotifyClean. It listens for "notifications" in the status bar, and you have the option to disable them. Download/install/activate the module, turn on the listening feature, and send a message. When you go back into NotifyClean, you'll see "Data Usage". Select that, then select "Data usage is running". It should highlight the selection in red, and ultimately get rid of the little annoying icon that shows up for a split second.
It seems that I'm not the only one having an issue. Well hopefully there's a better work around for this because I don't plan rooting my phone for a long time! Flashing roms and tweaks could be addicting haha! Hopefully someone finds a better fix to hide this annoying notification!

Yeah, take it from someone that flashed a ROM today and every mod/tweak I could find... it gets addicting. I spent 8 hours at my computer today going over various mods and personalizing my phone. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything to help with your issue that doesn't involve root. If you know what is causing the notification then you may be able to go into settings>apps>all and disable the offender?

I managed to get a screenshot, and I checked what app was causing it but it was a system app called "Data Usage". Anyone know how to turn off data usage notifications? Turning off data usage alert doesn't help
This is normal behavior. While it shouldn't be popping up, its normal as in that it is what is done when a SMS/MMS is sent while on WiFi.
You can locate the app through Application Manager and tap it to Disable Notifications. This doesnt require root or anything.
Taking shots in the dark here, but there is a data usage section under wireless & networks in settings. In that menu there is a toggle for 'alert me about data usage'. You can then drag a slider up and down to set the cap for when your phone warns you about data usage. Maybe yours is dragged to the very bottom so it alerts you about any data usage?
Unlikely because it would show up during everything, but worth asking. Maybe just disabling the notification toggle would work. Also, does your carrier ship with specific software to monitor data usage? If so then check all of those apps settings to see if anything has any effect.
It doesn't matter whether or not the wifi is on, it still annoyingly pops up. I meant that you really can't disable notifications as it is a system app

I read its some type of traffic usage. Someone here posted a picture of it here. Also I have an option on the ROM I'm running to hide that notification. O don't think its carrier IQ but then again.
Hello everybody,
I got a strange problem occuring only in a certain situation. In order to explain better, have a concrete example here:
I write a message in Whatsapp or Threema. Then I lock the phone by closing the flip cover: The screen then shows the clock from "Asus Flip Cover" and turns off after 5 seconds. So far so good. Now: When I get a message, I hear the notification sound. I open the flip cover and... the notification immediately disappears. So sometimes I miss important messanges, just because of this bug.
At first I thought that it is a third party app that is responsible for this strange behaviour. But yesterday I did a reset of the entire phone via the settings app and didn't even use a backup to restore it. The bug reappeared.
Apparently nobody else is encountering this bug, so before sending the phone back I thought that maybe someone has an idea or even solution for me. The phone is the ZE551ML (not rooted or unlocked) and yesterday I also installed the new firmware (.59); the bug was there since I got the phone, but as I said: I thought it is a third party app that is responsible for this behaviour and I had no time to reset it earlier because of exams and stuff... Is there another way to reset the phone? Maybe a better one than the one over the settings app?
Sincerely,
Christophe
Is autostart denying these apps from automatically starting? By default it denies all apps. D'you have smart-saving mode on with extend standby or the option that turns off data when screen is off?
Is your lockscreen set to show notifications?

WhatsApp and Threema are both allowed to auto-start. I remember that I had to set both of them to "allow".

The following are my settings under "Settings" -> "Sound & notification":
When device is locked: Show all notification content
App notifications: Threema and Whatsapp have no special settings
Apply Material Design: OFF
Notification access: ASUS Launcher
I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I'm tagging ASUS employee @Tuanies hopefully he can provide further assistance. I'm out of ideas since you have already factory reset the phone.

You mean turning the entire Asus Cover View off? I just tried and the messages still disappear. Actually the screen turns on automatically, the lockscreen appears and they disappear within a second.
After the reset I even got the strange behaviour that messages arrive, sometimes, late or only when I open the specific app.
Do you have any notification filters set?

No.
Just tell me if you think the problem is hardware related or software related. Personally I wouldn't say it is hardware related but one may never know for sure.
I know the firmware from ASUS is quite buggy (and has a lot of translation faults btw.) and, according to some research on the internet, ASUS often tries to break the law by not repearing rooted devices even if it is entirely legal in the EU. So before unlocking the bootloader and trying an alternative firmware, I just want to be sure.

Sounds like a software problem, does it happen right after a wipe without anything else installed? Could just be an installed app causing issues.

What do you mean by "wipe"? Do you mean booting into recovery? As is mentionned above I did a reset via the settings of the phone. After this reset I only installed Threema and Whatsapp and the problem appeared again.
Does it happen before those two apps are installed?

How should I know? The problem appears with messaging apps, so I can't test it without them.
a possible answer
I think I had the same problem after arbitrarily swiping or tapping the wrong response to use CM lock for Asus with the latest updated.
Google "Lock apps" function integrated with CM AppLock" to navigate to a possible hidden app setting preventing you from seeing notifications and uncheck "Hide notifcations... " under the "Options" heading on said page.
shortcut:
(App Drawer settings, lock apps, input pattern you chose, settings (upper right 3 dots), uncheck "Hide notification")
I now have all my notifications back that I allowed in other settings.
I hope this helps.
I tried to post the URL, but I haven't posted 10 times yet.

so my s8+ keeps reverting all developer menu settings and toggles to factory as well as not allowing some accessibility settings to be saved (ultimate rotation control for example never gets access to the accessibility settings while when i first got it, it did just fine and no app update to it)
as well as now some apps using text to speech even though both the vision settings are off and talk back is even disabled
what the hell is going on with this phone?!
unknown sources keeps reverting to off, gpu and other settings keep reverting to stock.
i know of one other who has had this issue on this forum and neither of us know whats going on.
any help would be appreciated

Ok, I'm not the only one who noticed that the setting to allow apps to be installed from unknown sources was turning itself off.
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Just going to toss out the obvious, but did you make sure when you allow the unknown sources, you uncheck the "only this time" box?
For 'Unknown Sources' to remain active, you need to click on the actual title 'Unknown Sources' in bold. You will then get a warning that you need to agree to. Once you do, it will remain active.
Haven't had any other issues w/ settings reverting back but you may want to try the above method and see if it helps.
I'm on ATT carrier/device and mine reverts to off also with every reboot. I didn't even notice until I read this thread, I guess I haven't been installing any apk.mirrow apps lately.
The above method did not work for me. Thanks for the heads up though to the both of you.
This phone and it's firmware hassles and issues is getting old real quick lol. We need root asap.....

Mine has this issue to with developer setting. Keep screen on during charge keep reverting to off.... wierd!
I've noticed it forgets settings, the unknown sources, the volume control for bluetooth keeps turning off on its own so I have to enable it.
I have also had it change my settings for Do Not Disturb. I stopped using DND because it is too unreliable. Using an app instead.

no...... no it will not this is the whole issue, i (and others) agree to the warning and then later after the install or update it then of it's own accord reverts to off; and since allow unknown source will NEVER toggle to on UNLESS you agree i'm not sure what you're thinking of.......
My screen time out keep reversing back to 1 minutes after inactivity, after I change to 5 minutes and come out from settings
I love my new Pixel 2 XL but despite my best efforts to identify what app or system service was sending repeated (and annoying) default notification sounds but not showing any other message or indication, I finally hit on a solution that seems to work.
SET THE DEFAULT NOTIFICATION SOUND TO "NONE"
settings>sound>advanced>default notification sound
Then set the notification sounds to whatever you want for each app you actually care to hear from.

I have noticed this as well.
<notification sound> no new text or email...
For me, it's just easier to ignore the errant tone once in a while than to set notifications for individual apps (cause I'm totally lazy like that).
But THAT is the beauty of Android... to each their own and there are always multiple ways to skin that cat
Use a notification log
I had this same issue. Turned out to be an app I had disabled pop ups for.
I have a (potentially) better solution. Add a notification log widget to find the culprit:
1. Long press on home screen and go to widgets.
2. Drag the settings widget to the home screen.
3. In the list of options, choose Notifications
Now you can see a log of your notifications. Next time you get the sound but no pop up, go into the log and find the offender at the top of the list.
For me it was a game I didn't need so I deleted it, but you can remedy the problem as you see fit.

Glad you found it! Sorry I just saw this. I forget where I learned about this, but it wasn't easy to find. I'm glad I could pass it on to someone else, I'm sure it could be plenty useful.
I'm having the same issue but it's not even showing in the notification log. Makes me want to throw it out the window to be honest. There's time where it will go off every 30 seconds. Off to reset I guess and see if that works.
same thing here pixel 2 oreo 8.1 notification sound...no thing new in the "hot list" or email or message
very weird, and randomly at night too which is the suck
2019 and no change
Hello, same issue still persists in 2019. Every few weeks i must dump the default sound as it sets it self up again.
Still no idea why it does it, just a temp bandaid to curb the annoyance. I notice a slightly higher battery drain too, tells me something is running

Sounds like a re-install is in order...if you have an unlocked bootloader, when was the last time you've done an update via Full Factory image? I'd imagine all that might be sorted out by reinstall/updating; with the "-w" removed of course...
I hope you consider it, and I hope this helps...
Okay so i got the phone yesterday and have been looking into the phone since. I have a few problems i would like solutions for. Most of these i guess are bugs or settings related problems.
1. The volume rocker stops working when i clear apps from the app manager... I've seen this problem being mentioned by a bunch of people from as far as 2015 and there apparently seems to be no solution for it apart from the "Accessibility Menu" trick..
2. MIUI doesn't let third party apps set the lockscreen wallpaper... WHY??
3. I tried all profiles and settings in the phone, but i really can't get the push notification pop up on the top of the screen to work most of the times... In every other phone you get a pop up when you get notifications but with this OS it vibrates but doesn't show the pop up.. AGAIN, WHY???
4. I got the MIUI 11 update but it's Android 9??? I thought MIUI 11 is Android 10? When are we supposed to get 10 for the phone?
This phone is amazing. Really. It's one of the most comprehensive set of hardware in a budget package right now. But the OS is absolute garbage, and that's putting it lightly. Any help to maybe get rid of these problems/bugs until a custom ROM is out will be much appreciated!
1. Dunno
2. Security reasons, probably. You don't want random apps hijacking your lockscreen
3. Uh dunno
4. Android 10 coming soon

So I found what's wrong with the notification thing, XIAOMI somehow thought it's an acceptable compromise to turn off ALL notifications for EVERY app to save battery... -_- You have to INDIVIDUALLY turn on notifications for every app you have installed to get notifications as you did with every other manufacturer.... And it's not even one checkbox to tick, you have to go in a separate menu for EACH app and tick 5 or 6 checkboxes manually... WOW... I will sell this phone within a month if there is no custom ROM.

MIUI 11 is really annoying, but its good enough for me. Has all the essentials feature I need.
More customizability on MIUI 11 would be nice.
MIUI 11 with Android 10 update is imminent in the month of December
And what's the deal with some earphones not being detected when plugged in??? My Auglamor R8 just doesn't work without manually switching the audio output to headphones... This is SO annoying!!
