I have a G2x that I have loved for the better part of a year. I recently cracked the screen and I have been contemplating selling my phone or fixing the screen myself.
My potential new phones will probably be
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Unlocked $620
Samsung Galaxy SII i9100 Unlocked $580
Samsung Galaxy SII T-Mobile $499
So I must ask, What do you like about your phone? What do you hate? Is the fact that it's a Nexus Line reassuring for updates? Do you dislike the 5MP camera? Is the 720p resolution great vs the others? Do you dislike the lack of codecs for video such as Xvid? Is the non expandable storage a minus?
Thanks for any responses =D
My phone is the main source of entertainment in my life. In most cases I use it as my mp3 player, GPS, Credit Card, Email, Netflix, and of course as a Phone. The only thing I dislike about the phone is the battery life, which is due to the screen size. Everything else on this phone preforms like a champion, and looks amazing on the large screen. Soft buttons are nice, but sometimes I tap them while texting. Probably the kicker is how open the phone is, and how easy it is to add almost any feature you would need. I have the Verizon model, and the 32GB of internal storage is far more then I need, but I also bought a USB Micro to USB cable to add flash drive support. I store my movies on my flash drives, and stream them from there.
I would give this phone a 4.8/5, which subtractions for battery life.
Thanks for the response, I like all your points, the battery is a downer for me as I am a heavy user. Not sure how I will respond to on screen buttons as I like the Capacitive buttons. Leaning to the SGII i9100

The guys review that you read was the perspective of a Verizon model. The Verizon model and gsm model are different in terms of battery life. GSM GN battery life is significantly better because it doesn't use LTE which is a huge battery drainer.
In terms of capacitive buttons, just thinking of it this way. More screen place when you're watching videos, they aren't there permanently. I personally prefer them over capacitive buttons, don't bash it unless you've tried
Battery life for me on GSM model is great for me.

This is true but... The other thing that was not mentioned is that the GSM Version of the GNEX is only a 16G device while the CDMA (Verizon ONLY) version is the ONLY 32G model available so unless youre with Verizon you will only have 16G storage...
My opinion to my GNex
What I love about my phone;
It's beatiful and fast...
It's the first phone running ICS from stock, which gives you the felling of bein someone special.
You can do loads of stuff with it, and you have far more options, when it comes to flashing stuff... e.g. you can have a kernel, like franco.kernel, and have a recovery partition, which is still experimental, unlike GB, where you have the recovery in the kernel...
You can flash via fastboot(in the bootloader) or via Odin OR via CWM, where as on the GS II you can only flash via Odin or CWM/ any recovery...
The design is pure simplicity, it has no buttons, which gives it this rich sort of feeling. The whole phones just has a special feeling.
If I put my opinion of this phone into one sentence, it would be: It's brilliant, it convinces pure by it's simplicity, and Samsung's love to detail.
I'm using the Galaxy Nexus GSM and really love it. and I think the on-screen buttons are a big plus. After getting used to them, the older design -- with buttons that sit there glowing and taking up space even when you're just trying to watch a movie -- looks awkward and clunky. And it's great to have the flexibility and assurance of quick updates that the Nexus series offers (though also worth pointing out that we haven't gotten 4.0.3 yet).
My only complaints are the 16GB limitation, which chafes a bit, and the camera, which is OK but not great (though the quick reaction time is terrific).

why are you people still going on about storage, 16gb vs 32gb, i don't really know. wrong, you don't need to go verizon/lte to have more storage.
you guys do know the nexus/ics supports external usb storage right..?
Without a doubt this is the best phone I've owned (i've owned an iPhone, Captivate, and Focus), and I don't regret buying it outright in December.
The SGS2 is still a great phone but I don't think I could go back to Gingerbread and be happy, let alone touchwhiz.
With moderate use I get about 14 hours minimum on the battery, but have just flashed a custom kernel and UV'd it so we'll see how that turns out
I love my gsm gnexus too. But you have to admit the storage limitation sucks and screen on battery life and the camera and the gpu are not the greatest.
Galaxy nexus was a great purchase in December. Right now most companies are starting to release phones with ICS preinstalled that have much better specs than gnexus.
If you really want the awesome developer support and stock experience then you should get the gnexus.
If you don't mind the manufacture themes (touchwiz, etc) I'd say you should wait for GSIII or something.
If you have to buy a phone right now, then gnexus is definitely the best choice.

yes but it is also very inconvenient to be carrying external USB storage with microusb to usb adapter etc etc
hi guys, just wanted a general consensus from you guys regarding the galaxy nexus build quality and i'll explain why. I spend a lot of time travelling and do end up staying in places for months at a time. I'm currently planning on going to india for the next 6-8 months and would be travelling in between as well. Now, since samsung doesn't sell the nexus in india, it would not be covered under warranty as well.
I personally haven't used a phone warranty to the best of my memory and as is the human mind, now thats all I can think about. I've been using a blackberry for nearly 12 years and i'm used to reliability and phones that stand up to some abuse and not fail on me. If I was to buy the nexus, would I be looking at anything failing in the first year? is it known to have certain faults etc? And if it does, is it relatively fixable? I have no qualms about opening up a phone and replacing parts if need be, but i'm not going to start soldering things.
So basically, my question is, is the nexus a problem phone (is there anything I should look for when buying the piece), and if its a real pain, should I just get another android phone? and if so, which one? as much as I would like to get the s3, I can't justify spending that much money and I thought of getting the galaxy note but doesn't seem sensible considering the new update is coming out in sept/oct? Basically my requirements are: reliable phone, best user interface with quick os updates (reason for nexus phones), should have nfc, front facing cam, very good pic quality with no shutter lag, preferably already on ICS, and a phone with worldwide warranty as I do travel a lot, and I think most importantly, it should be future proof for the next year (it should run apps with no lag or difficulty, should be able to multi-task, etc) with very good battery life (more than a day).
thanks for the help guys!
Hmmm, you come to a Galaxy Nexus forum to ask whether to buy a nexus
Worldwide warranty, Nexus don't have that.
If you want the front camera to do video calls over UMTS(Not data), the Gnex can't do it, can only use skype or similar programmes.
And to add on, the Nexus have only been released for 5 Months, don't really have any major hardware issues as far as i know.

What he said. I truly hope you didn't come to the Galaxy Nexus forum hoping to be talked out of buying this fantastic phone.
That said, it is a truly fantastic phone. You can't find a better one for the money right now, though you're not going to find a worldwide warranty.
I got mine as a early fathers day gift and I'm so happy I got it soon. Best phone I have had.

Well, any video calls I would be making would be through skype. I figured this would be the best place to see if the phone has any major hardware gripes.
I'm currently considering buying the phone from gsmnation for $440 plus an additional $50 for worldwide 1 year warranty.
I haven't had any problems at all, but get the warranty just in case, since you will be out of the US.

not worth it. Galaxy S3.
Wait for the GS3 to be released so you can better compare the two.
I think it really comes down to a few things:
1. Vanilla Android vs. Skinned (HTC Sense, MotoBlur, TouchWiz)
2. Hardware
3. Individual software features
For a pure Android 4.0 ICS experience, you will get that with the [GSM] version of the phone. The Verizon LTE version (the one I have) has been through a series of 'episodes' that have soured the community a bit. It isn't as powerful as the GSM version, nor do we get updated as much. In fact, Google dropped it from their developer's list a few months back. So with that said, if you're on Verizon I wouldn't bother. Is it a good fun? Its great, but it could have been better had Verizon not tampered with it.
On hardware, the phone is a few months old, but its still pretty impressive for hardware. The GS3 will have some upgrades under the hood, but not by much. My phone is fast and does what it needs to do. Could it be better? Yes, but it works.
Concerning individual software features, I think the GS3 beats the Nexus here. While I am personally not a fan of all the gimmicky features, others find them to be quite impressive. There's definitely more offered on the GS3 in that department, but if you don't care about S-Voice, S-Dial (I think that's what it is called), and some of the other stuff, then the Nexus will do you just fine.

You do not understand the circumstances regarding Google and Verizon. It isn't updated less, it is just updated slower. It isn't less powerful, they have the same specs.

Hi im thinking of getting the Galaxy Nexus after having SGS2 and then htc one x (wich i sold due to a lot hardware problems) i dont know what to get and i think the galaxy nexus would be a decent phone but im woried is it better than the SGS2 if not than this phone is not for me because i got tiered of S2 another question is how is gaming and watching hd mkv movies on this phone? And what do you say should i get it (p.s i hate the SGS3's design and i dont want to spend that much money for what i think is not a big upgrade just a quad core and better screen)
Hardware specs wise, sgs2 is slightly better
Galaxy nexus for more developer support, pure Google experience w/o bloatware, faster OS updates
Personally I prefer the nexus

my sister has gs2 and i've the gnexus..
the differents are little but important, first of all the different resolutions and the different time to update.. i have ics since a week before christmas 2011 and my sister installed it 2 weeks ago, and now i've jelly bean xD
if you find to sell your gs2 at a nice € and you find the gnexus in a nice discount you can do it
think its a overall good phone how is the gaming on this phone like N.O.V.A 3 or Modern combar 3 and watching mkv movies
Please refer to the comparisons post in the general section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642801
before responding, I did check the comparison thread, didn't see much on the S2 V nexus directly, TONS of S3.... and I'll bring up some other considerations that aren't really "phone" specific for the OP to think about ....
To the OP, it is hard to answer your question, you ask "is it worth it .....", but, we don't know what YOUR definition of "worth it" is.
You can go to other threads, gsmarena, etc., and see the phone spec differences.
Just a couple things that might be a little subtle from just looking at the specs .....
The S2 has faster HPSA, 42 MBS theoretical VS 21 on the Gnexus. Most PHONES can't take advantage of that speed by themselves (or users don't). It makes a difference for me, as I hotspot and run a computer off of my tmobile connection. You do need to be in a tmo 42 mbs area for this to be useful, however, so, if you're not, this feature might not be "worth it" for you.
PENTABAND? What provider do you use, are you looking to do contracts? Straight Talk (att and tmobile) and tmobile itself, offer great pay per month contracts (plenty of posts on the ST $45 unlimited everything plans). The S2 is faster ON TMOBILE, but, while it can run on ATT for voice, data is very slow. The nexus is fast on both ATT and Tmobile.
Pentaband is a good feature if you are looking to switch between att and tmo (maybe one gets better reception when you're at school, the other when you're at home ?).
A THOUGHT HERE is the ATT S2 SKYROCKET, apparently, it runs ATT fast natively, AND, can be flashed to the Tmo version (Tmo S2 doesn't have the same radio, so doesn't work the other way)
As others have mentioned, more developer support for the GN, less for the S2, but, ... the S2 has lots of good roms too.
SD CARD - is "WORTH" it to me. I am in hotels a lot, have a large collection of blu ray DVDs I've converted using DVD Catalyst, and have many on micro SD cards ... and I can use my phone as a movie player if the hotel (or if I go to a friends house) TV has HDMI.
The built in memory on the GN is not so small that its a big hinderance, I can still fit a movie or two and hundreds of hours of songs, so, long as you plan you're fine ... removeable SD allows you to bring your entire song collection and dozens of movies.
That's useful for me, might not be "worth it" for you.
Both are great phones, FOR ME, the Nexus is much more versitile if you're looking to maximize pay as you go plans and carrier useage, the S2 if you are looking for pure data speed and SD is a little stronger.
There are other features of the phones that might be "worth it" to you, those are the big ones I've been thinking / testing.
Good luck with your choice!
I already have the s2 so im going to think about it one more time for me it seems like a god mid upper range phone altough the htc one s also looks tempting
Get a comment in before the lock guys...

Didn't read this forum before posting, but YES it is worth it. ESPECIALLY with JellyBean ready for action.
Yes and No
Yes and no. From a community standpoint, yes. The Galaxy Nexus is THE developers phone. However, it is likely that Google will announce their next Nexus phone in November - December. This phone will not only give the pure android experience, but also outweigh the Galaxy Nexus in terms of specs. I think the Galaxy Nexus has a good 6 - 8 months until it becomes outdated.

Yeah I agree. I mean Google haven't really been impressive on specs. I mean the Nexus One was amazing. The Nexus S came out and still amazing.
Then the Galaxy Nexus Came out with OK specs upgrade.
To me this seems like the pass that apple takes on their iPhones.
So I EXPECT Google to make a very dramatic upgrade in Design and Specs and this time set the Standards.
Not a few standards.
What are your priorities in a phone?
If you always want the latest and greatest hardware, GS2
If you want the perfect blend of latest tech & reliability without having to install a custom ROM, Gnex
I've used the GS2, sometimes it acts up, but it's mostly a good phone. The gnex, it's very reliable.
The GS2... It wasn't until this year that Skype officially supported video chat on the GS2. Stuff like that just turns me off from the GS2 & GS3. They always need 6 months from release to actually mature past their older brothers.
Like everyone else is mentioning, the Galaxy Nexus is a great device if you plan on fully utilizing the "Nexus" part of the name.
I am looking to purchase this phone currently and I'd love to know the Pros and Cons! Thank you

Cons of hardware:
- doesnt have stero speakers, something I miss from my old Nokia
Cons of software:

Everything else is amazing
Another pro in my opinion is battery life. Formerly I used Galaxy Ace and LG P970, both with stock and custom roms, none of those was nearly as good in battery life as stock JB on the Gnex!
I generally like it, however two things that have annoyed me. First, the turn by turn navigation didn't work when I tried (stuck on "Searching for GPS") so the GPS portion of it is useless. I'm told that this has something to do with Jelly Bean and the Nexus and that toggling "Google Location Services" in the settings sorts it out; I've not had chance to try that yet.
Second, the device randomly shuts down. However, I'm not sure if that has something to do with the power button being pressed when in my pocket due to the SGP Neo Hybrid EX case making the buttons more sensitive. I've removed it from my phone now (it was also sagging so I don't recommend this case at all).
Other than that, I've noticed no real issues.
Pro's: AOSP, no bloatware to be found. Updates directly from Google. ROM's that are completely bug free.
Cons: None that I can think of. Maybe just the camera..I always look ugly in the pictures I take of myself (though maybe not the camera's fault? ).
Swiftkey'ed on my CM9 Galaxy Nexus
Depends on what its compared to. The camera could be a little better, but still okay for a $350 phone. People complained about low speaker volume and screen, but my device has better screen than the S3 (yes I did say that) and is loud enough so maybe I got a good one. Build quality could be better, but certainly better than the S3. Its GPU is a bit dated and probably not future proof for heavy HD gaming. Also no microSD slot, but I have come to term Google will never allow it in their devices.
'Some' people with the CDMA version report poor signal, sometimes unbearbly bad. But GSM version don't have the issue.
Overall its the best Android phone in the market now in term of getting the latest softwares until the next Nexus phone arrive. It also have the best custom roms in term of quality.

CONS
- ICS/JB link ringer+notification volumes. And JB somehow broke the vibrate for notifications 'master' switch, you need to configure this per app now.
- MTP/PTP protocol instead of mass storage.
- Camera quality should have been better.
PROS
- Vanilla Android! (quick OTA updates directly from Google, no carrier crapware)
- Fastboot
- Development community/support
- AMOLED display
- It looks good
- Build quality (I bought this phone in December 2011, not scratch on it yet and I don't use a case or screen protector)
- Battery life
- In short, pretty much everything else.
Buy it, if you are a tech-enthusiast you won't be disappointed. My next phone will definitely be a new Nexus.

As much as I like the Nexus, I doubt you'll find many who would agree the screen is better on the Nexus than the S3; My girlfriend has the S3, and the screen is clearly much better, brighter, better viewing angles, sharper, everything. The screen on the Nexus for me was a little better than the S2 (higher res, but the colours aren't quite so good).
I also find the build quality to be the same.
The Nexus is a good phone, but lets be honest about its shortcomings compared with newer rivals.

Like I said, it'll be a surprise. One thing I like about the S3 is ability to lower saturation. But I can see pixels with the S3 which I cant with the slightly smaller Nexus. My Nexus screen also has smoother shading than the S3. I did not think it was any brighter than the Nexus. But I have owned many Galaxy phones and I like Samsung phones, but I still think AMOLED screen quality can be hit and miss and not consistent globally.
Pros: Everything else besides 2 for me. Look below
Cons: No MiroSD, Super Amoled(Not +)
I'm thinking of buying one, it's in the price range I'm looking at ($80-$100 on swappa), and it seems like it still has good dev support.
The Nexus is almost 3 years old, those that still have it, are you keeping it because you like it, or just because (don't want to loose your data plan for example).
Thanks
Dan
It's a decent phone and there is still some Dev support. I bought mine about a year ago and have been satisfied. Battery life sucks compared to newer phones signal isn't to great compared to my RAZR. But all in all it having an unlocked BL on Verizon makes it all worth while. I thoroughly enjoy mine and will only move if nexus 6 is unlocked on Verizon.

I can join my previous speakers. It has a very bad battery, it's lags often in apps and the screen is very worn because of this early AMOLED technologie, BUT if you have only 100€ its one of the better phones. I'm using it right now because my nexus 5 were broken and I really like it because it just works. However if you have $50 more to spend when you should buy the moto g. It has clearly more power and offical support by motorola.
no. this phone is terrible, and i'm currently looking into buying a replacement battery for my S3 since it's been sitting in my drawer and i have no idea where the battery went, plus it's broken
i can probably find some way to fix it on ADB, but if not, i'll just wait until i upgrade then i'll get the oneplus one
seriously this phone sucks, there is nothing to recommend about it
No man dont do it .. phone performance is pretty random, dont know why, sometimes it flies like an S4, sometimes it lagz and freezes like an S1..
I've been very satisfied with my phones performance. But I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like to mess around with kernels, ROMs and settings.

Thanks for all the responses. I actually do like flashing roms. Should've given more info in OP. I currently have a verizon s4 but since a warranty replacement a few months ago i no longer have an unlocked (exploitable) bootloader and am stuck with touchwiz roms and no custom kernels.
Use my phone mostly for web browsing, xda app, Pandora, Google music - no gaming, coupled that with the fact that i can use the $100-$125 difference I'll make after selling the s4, thought this phone might work.
Will have to think about it a bit more.

Well, web browsing has become hard since 4.4.x. To be honest, KitKat is a mess on this phone. I hope new GPU drivers and 3.4 kernel will help.
If I were you I would buy a Moto G.
I'm using Gnex for a half a year. I bought used. So not because of data plan.
For me Gnex can still give what i need for "normal" daily use - sms, browser, messenger, driving assist, news reading, some games ....
So it depends on your need
best regards
It's a beautiful device, but it's definitely not the best. I absolutely love the unobtrusive design of the front -- just plain black. The phone is the exact right size for me, and the volume and power buttons are in exactly the right place; however the bezels are quite large in comparison to newer phones. This makes the structural integrity of the phone better, but it isn't really nice to me. The back of the phone has a comfortable plastic "grippy" feeling that makes it easy to hold, especially with the curved extrusion at the bottom by the speaker grill.
The speaker is awful, as with all Samsung devices. It's a back-facing speaker that's tiny and easy to cover up. Not much of a problem if you use earphones like I do.
It easily lasts me through a school day, though it only lasts about 4 hours streaming video. Its dual core processor is definitely outdated and consumes far more powererformance than any modern phone.
The screen is on-par with the Galaxy S3 screen, which isn't a compliment. It's low-resolution in comparison to new phones (1280x720), it's hot (as in it actually feels hot) and consumes a heck of a lot of battery very quickly. The colour is amazing, vibrant and simply gorgeous... but, within a few months, you get screen burn-in which is especially noticeable in low light -- speaking of which, the screen in low light is far worse than any IPS with a slightly grainy image, though it does retain a good contrast. Its slightly curved display prevents it from scratching anything facing down and, in my opinion, makes it easier to touch things at the top of the screen.
The phone's radio is only GSM (unless you're going for Sprint or Verizon), so if you're wanting LTE, tough luck. It also doesn't have FM or AM radio if you're into that.
The camera's not the best, but it does the job. The flash is often over-bright, and lacks HDR, motion stabilisation and is only 5 Megapixels. Front camera is 720p.
So why buy this phone? If you can get it really cheap, go for it. If not, go for something newer like the Moto X, Moto G, Nexus 5 or the upcoming Nexus 6 for a similar, updated experience.
Just remember, it's truly an Android modder's dream. It's extremely mod-able with a decent sized community. In my opinion, it is still the best phone I have ever used. I find that just the pure feeling and look of the phone is enough to keep me with it. Also, with recent additions to the phone like F2FS, graphics drivers, new kernels, new ROMs etc., the phone is still very usable for just about everything -- even most gaming.
For $100 i would buy it. The moto g is comparable and faster but almost $100 more. But I think your question is already answered

bought mine for 70 dollars one month ago, definetily worth it.
I would much rather use an s4 with touchwiz than use a galaxy nexus. The gnex is the second worst android phone that I've ever owned.
You really can't compare a three year old phone to a phone that is just over a year old. Of course the s4 will be better but touchwizz yuck it would probably be just as slow as a galaxy nexus.

Appreciate everyone's response, thanks
It's a good phone when it was released but the battery life is quite short even though I don't have a lot of apps on it. When the battery life is in the red, it usually last around 5 minutes then it shuts down. I think it was better than than iPhone 4 at its time since it was one of the first phone with a larger screen.
I agree with the other posts.
Honestly, I think CM10 runs amazing on the phone and the signal is actually quite good with that version. 4.4.4 doesn't do well on it for the signal...at least for me. I have been trying many ROMs / Kernels and I have the same luck with them all. I only have mine because I bought it for like $80 on ebay and still have the unlimited plan with Verizon so I don't want to upgrade to a new phone unless I pay the big dollars.
Battery life...is crap like everyone else states. I bought three batteries for this phone for that reason and always have it plugged in, which is why I actually have burn in from my apps.
I own GNex for almost 3 years now and here are few things coming into my mind right now:
Terrible camera
Terrible speaker (Very low volume)
Slow as hell
Worn screen
Incredibly short battery life
Also, with such limited memory multitasking is pretty much not existent if you like installing many apps
Honestly, there is not a single day that I don't want to throw my unit against the wall.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this peace of junk.
N4 would be a much better option http://swappa.com/buy/nexus-4-unlocked/us

I'm thinking of buying one, it's in the price range I'm looking at ($80-$100 on swappa), and it seems like it still has good dev support.
The Nexus is almost 3 years old, those that still have it, are you keeping it because you like it, or just because (don't want to loose your data plan for example).
Thanks
Dan

I'm keeping it because I don't have much money on a new phone and there isn't much on the market that really makes me want to spend anything.
The Galaxy Nexus is a really ****ty phone. If it wasn't a Nexus it would get zero respect from me.
I mean for an old and cheap phone, it's probably the best you can buy at this moment but I'd suggest saving a few more dollars and getting something better.
