Roms - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Any one knows when will the custom roms arrive for this device i know itll take time but i need to prepare myself of how long will i need to use the miui

Maybe 4 or 5 months, since xiaomi is always late to release kernel source it will take some time to get stable ROM

dual boot patcher is already available for the Note 5, i hope they can get it for the Pro soon so i can have Miui/LineageOS together

what the adv of having a dual boot ?

obviously you have the choice of either the oem or custom rom to boot.

Damn! The phone isn't even on sale yet. DAMN!

2-3 months

First of all, people and devs should buy the device! And it is possible to get ROMs before the Kernel Source release, as devs create custom kernel. So, it may take 2-3 months

patience is a virtue

Hey Shahan. Will you be here as a developer for Redmi Note 5 pro? Then it is like heaven. Currently I own Mi4 with your Nitrogen OS.

Let the kernel source release

Though my question is somewhat unusual but any developers interested in building custom roms for Zenfone Max M1 pro. Was about to buy Redmi note 5 pro then Asus released this phone. Now I am confused. Also which phone will have a better future on XDA?

In terms of development on xda, RN5P will definitely have better support. Evident from previous xiaomi devices.

I think Redmi Note 5 Pro Will Develop More Custom Rom Than Zenphone M1 Pro

RN5 by a mile
The 5,000 mah battery and Vainilla Android is tempting but:
-No EIS
-No IR Blaster
-No Gorilla Glass or Oleophobic coating on the screen
-Inferior Selfie cam
-Low Development
So the Redmi Note 5 / 5 Pro is the clear winner

[request] miui 8 on oneplus 3

Hey I'm a huge MIUI fan and I'd love to see what the Oneplus 3 could do running MIUI anyone here willing to port the ROM for me willing to pay.....I really want
I find this request funny: it's not that Xiaomi doesn't market 5,5" devices, so if you like MIUI why purchase OP3 in the first place?
I own a Xiaomi Mi4c: that's a good device, but after trying MIUI out for one month or so I switched to CM 13 as soon as I could, and didn't turn my head behind once.

Well I had the mi5 and it was OK but I didn't have pro model and only had 3gb with full speed 820 so the prime model and MIUI is a high ram needed os and the Oneplus 3 has 6gb ram which would make one of the best mixes as I love MIUI
Mi5 has similar spec to our OP3
so i think someone will like that idea & try to port
deverlopment isn't easy, especially with new chipset

Hello...
For what it's worth.. I suggest the Xiaomi Note 5 Pro.
The Snapdragon 636 is a fine engine.. and the Price-To-Performance ratio is amongst the very best.
You just can't go wrong.. wether you leave it basically stock.. or go all out root/roms etc.
Happy Shopping!

Just like that, you know you are on rn5pro threads so i guess majority will recommand their phone so the rn5pro....
Those who are not satisfied are no more here so i guess no one will tell you max m1.
ask in max m1 and i guess they will tell you to buy max m1.
Human nature, we recommand what we have except if really bad product, which is not the case here as spotted, ratio performance/price is just fine af
Just check if you can still unlock (even 360 hours what is that in a recent phone life time)

Help Out in Choosing Between Between Note 5 Pro & Zenfone Max Pro M1

Hello Friends,
Could You Please help me out by Recommending a Device between Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Actually i am Currently Using MMX Nitro A311 with ResurrectionRemix ROM. And I need to upgrade to a New Device.
Actually Both the RNote5Pro and ProM1 both make a Tough Competition and with similar specs , making it really tough to choose from. So it is difficult for me in selecting one in my Budget of 15K.
I am Basically in to Info-Sec Field so I need a phone which I can Root Easily and install custom ROM(s) ,if needed. And I need a Decent Good Battery Backup & Processing Power so that I can manage my Studies and Work. And Want Complete Control of my Phone. And I need to Use My Next Phone for a Pretty Long Duration 2-3 Years.
I would Basically use my Phone for Calls, Chats, Youtube, Watching Tutorials, Reading PDFs and Camera is needed for Recording Purpose. Other than that I would use it for TESTING Apps and for Other Info-Sec Purposes.
Since I read that Xiaomi has some issues Now in Rooting and Now with that Anti-Rollback its now more critical.
So Please help me Out by Suggesting. And Leaving Your Kind Genuine Reviews.
Thanks in Advance,

Rahul

Go for the 6gb variant of the Zenfone Max pro M1. Xiaomi is a headache in terms of unlocking bootloader. I got permission to unlock months ago but I'm still not able to unlock it. Planning to sell my note 5 pro and get Zenfone Max pro!
Recommending something can be biased unless you havent tried both and yes its tough choice to make. Now that 6 gigs version of Asus zenfone max pro is released it can surely out perform 5 pro and in your case for a device to stay as much as 2-3 years i would vote hands down for max pro m1 6 gigs since 4+64gigs will age by that time. only thing which was letting max pro down compared to 5 pro was camera which now said to be improved since asus isnt launching zenfone 5 in india so its they're best bit in budget segment market. Speaking of development on both phone should be the same since both are powered by same processor and are treble enabled.
and Yes I am frustated with unlocking bootloader and antiroll thing since its only way they make money by making people use their bloatware and UI which is otherwise in asus case
so verdict ASUS FOR THE GO.
100% Redmi Note 5 Pro
And
Mi A2 Coming Shortly

I actually sold my RN5 Pro yesterday and will get Asus. Left all the groups of Telegram too. It's not worth investing time in custom roms anymore since it's a lot of headache with anti3/4, unlock bootloader etc.
I've used the 4GB Asus variant for few days, exchanged my ph with a friend, I won't say it's bug free phone but there is no phone that's bug free. For Asus: Once you've got used to receive otas from oem, security patches every bi monthly, stock Android with few addons ( double tap), can unlock unofficially and relock for warranty, I feel Asus has a lot of advantage here.
I'm pretty sure few will tell you about prior issues they had specially with Asus Zenphone phs that were based on Intel cpus but I would suggest you to ignore. Asus has learned from such mistakes, went with SD this time which I'm sure will get good dev support if you're into flashing roms.
For me, getting a stock rom ph, easy to root/unlock bootloader just to use ad blocker, good battery life, decent hardware, no boatloader 20 days waiting, no anti3/4, no mi fans nonsense. I've heard the camera outperforms RN5P but I haven't checked about it since I'm sure all mid end phs does the social sharing job. I'm investing my money with Asus this time.
simple sir , go for asus if your main priority into custom roms etc , you can simply unlock and flash anything right after buying .
this redmi note 5 pro/ai maybe good at camera but asus max pro m1 seems had an advantages on other specs.

The only thing better with Asus is the bigger battery. I don't understand how it has advantage in other specs? It does not support WiFI a/ac nor does it have an IR blaster for example and there is no mention of presence/absence of Gorilla Glass on Asus. Now I have a RN5 AI, so this has better camera specs than all M1 variants, but the RN5Pro still has a slight advantage with 3/4gb vs 3/4gb variants.
Yes the Xiaomi made i d*ck move by implementing ARB without making possibility to disable it, but you can still flash custom roms just as you always did, it's the unlocking method that's a bit more confusing than it was.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just stating the facts, you can check the specs by yourself.
Of course being on the Xiaomi forums there has to be a bit of bias for it, but in the end you go for what you want/need/have money for. The devices are similar, what made me lean to this side was better camera specs (f/1.9 aperture, dual pixel focus and bigger sensor), WiFi support, IR blaster and a rich modding community. Now I never used Asus devices nor do I know it's modding potential and devs interest, but I guess it's going to be good enough since it's cheap. The RN5 got a head start though, a lot of good devs are here.

i own both devices sir , i buyed redmi note 5 ai at the end of May and recently last week asus max pro m1 , i didnt use ir blaster and i dnt really know what is wifi a/ac .
from both device what makes me choose max pro m1 because the battery can last longer than my rn5 about an hour + in same usage , its has rgb led notification , the bottom speaker was way to better than rn5 , dedicated memory slot so nice if im planned to sell my rn5 and use with 1 device only, easily unlock bootloader and flash it with twrp+root without worrying anything , and cheaper than my rn5
sorry if something not right here ,its my own opinion sir im still xiaomi user for more than 15 devices variant , just comparing it with my own experience of usage .
Just wait for MI A2.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention the separate slot for SD card, which indeed is nice to have and RGB led which I didn't know it has But since I only use one SIM that's not something I need and speaker wise, it's good enough for me
In the end, one has to choose based on his needs and preferences, I would go for RN5, but that's my 2 cents we are giving pros and cons for both anyway
From reviews that I saw, the Zenfone has a pretty slow fingerprint scanner than the RN5. But they might've fixed that in an update. If I was in India, I'd go for the Zenfone (I wanted to get it before RN5 but I'm not in India), simply for the bigger battery. I'm not much of a camera guy, all I care about is lag free UI, decent gaming performance, good battery life, and sleek modern design.
Redmi note 5 pro, never had any problems in terms of modding & stuff. Besides it's very hard to get your hands on a Zenfone Max M1 (at least here in europe). The choice is yours, both are decent and 4 + 64 will be enough also in 3 years!

Still a best phone under 15k ? or suggest better..

Hi friends,
I want to know that, Redmi note 5 pro is still worth to buy, and if not then which phone is better under 15k.
My needs by ranking:
1. Performance
2. Battery Backup
3. Camera
I have seen multiple comparisons between several phones at this price range but didn't find any better, also as i am an android developer i think future development will be better with note 5 pro what do you think?
1. Pocophone F1 (it's really as good as it is)
2. Redmi note 5 pro (the mod support is too good)

Redmi Note 5 Pro still worth because it has gained a lot of Custom Rom and developers support.
But if Nokia's lineup(5.1, 6.1) or Mi A2 price drops then they worth Buying. I also see Infinix brand came with Android One. If you love Stock android then you might also try Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

Will there even be Custom Roms for Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro???
I really don't like MIUI and the only reason i want this phone is because i wish to install a custom rom to it. My favorite being Resurrection Remix but at this point, LineageOS would be fine too.
Any information on the matter?
Is there any rom even being developed for this?

this happened over 2 months ago and yet there is nothing. "need for testing" hmm okay.
Is it because of the Mediatek chip and them not sharing code?
It seems like there will not be any stable enough custom roms for this phone even tho it was realeased 4 months ago, there is still nothing.
Makes me a bit sad. So great specifications but no custom roms. Damn Mediatek! [if its their fault]
@zaiross At the moment, the main problem is a bug that results in hard brick which can only be recovered by a service centre that has an account authorized to flash in EDL mode (the lowest level of service/flash protocol, even lower than Fastboot). So no development because if a ROM Dev causes the hard brick, they have to pay a fee to service centre to get reflash using EDL.
Also does not help that MediaTek seem not interested in the smaller development community. MediaTek have said they are not interested in a similar partnership with the Linux Code Aurora community that Qualcomm works with. It's a pity they're not interested as I believe it would help increase popularity of MTK chips and increase sales over time.
a programmer could modify sp flash tool so it would bypass asking for authorized account. that would be worth to achieve smth for long time than paying services for bricks
I said this before and I'm going to say it again, you will likely not see any further development for this device in the foreseeable future. Sure POSP is stuck on testing but do any one of you honestly see anyone contributing to testing when they will most likely brick the phone during the process?
This is a dead phone. Some of us have sold it and moved on. I will follow suit soon. I recommend you do too.

thank you, I said the same thing month and half ago and nobody listened me.
mediatek is just a waste of time for any development: customs and gcam
move on and buy Redmi Note 8 or Mi9 Lite or Mi 9T, they do have too many developments and working gcam without need of hard working like wyroczen, and nobody will waste money or dismount for unbricking.
Hey brick problem isn't Mediatek's fault...
I get many smartphone with Mediatek's.
All of them were unbrickable...
On every others, you failed your installation, you opened SP Flashtool and reinstalled the previous Rom.
No code were needed.
If you really do a crappy work, you had to reinstall IMEI in addition...that's all.
But hardbrick was totally impossible on any other Mediatek's device I used.
Then comes the problem of developpers...maybe they had to change their mind...yes maybe it's harder...yes maybe they will have less help...
But the other chipmaker's behavior is too dangerous to keep this situation.

This is getting so disapointing. I bought the phone thinking it will have normal development just like any other big android brand. I feel bad for getting a xiaomi phone
I shouldn't trust xiaomi. It's a pitty what they do to their customers.

Since when does Xiaomi claim to support custom roms from the community with any of their phones??
Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T seems nice enough.. It has Qualcomm chip in it. Should people with Pro switch to that for example? Or perhaps Xiaomi Redmi K30, Realme X2 or Oppo K5 ....
Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro seems great because of specs but MIUI really sucks ass, and like ariber14, i too bought this phone in belief of getting a custom rom to it sooner or later. :/

I agree with @RenatoNismo and @Helhound0. It's a shame because the Redmi Note 8 Pro is so powerful and a great value proposition, but it's so easy to brick, and Custom ROM development is looking so unlikely now, that it's a real deal-breaker for me.
@RenatoNismo and @Helhound0, which phone do you plan to buy next? The MI 9 Lite and Redmi Note 8 both have Custom ROMS already, and look like good value propositions too, but I'm a bit discouraged by the fact that either of them are going to feel like a "downgrade", now that I've experienced the Redmi Note 8 Pro (i.e. they have weaker chipsets, and in the case of the MI 9 Lite, I'm worried about burn-in unless I really "babysit" it and use low brightness).
Do either of you feel like you would be conceding/downgrading by choosing one of these phones, or is the freedom, flexibility and Custom ROM-friendliness of these phones "worth it" to you?
I would have also considered the Realme 5 Pro or Realme X2, but at the moment, it seems to be impossible to unlock the bootloader for European devices, which of course, makes them not an option for Custom ROMS either.
I am still using Redmi Note 2, my next phone will be Snapdragon only, no more bullsh* of development like customs, gcam, bootloader and xiaomi.eu etc. etc.
in 2015 Helio X10 was promising like G90T was at the launch date, as always like the whole story of every mediatek devices, RN2 was enough for me to learn lesson, but it's good for daily use, even without customs neither gcam which I need, I could waited for months and paid more money for redmi note 3 pro, it's still being developed.
my gf's Redmi 5 is 2 years old cheapest, is being updated and has gcam night sight working better than rn8pro

I just got my OnePlus 5T working so I'll be using that as my daily and my Moto X4 for music. I'll probably keep this until next July and sell it so i can pool in some cash from my bonus and get whatever the flagship OnePlus out at that point. But if i was to make a purchase now, I'll probably avoid XIAOMI altogether. I've been looking into the ROG phone 2 specially since it's not expensive comparing to some other flagships. I'll probably go for that.

It's not, especially when you can just flash a GSI to it.
I have gotten Havoc to work via GSI.
