So i rooted my evo and installed a custom rom pretty much as soon as I had it out of the box. And then started installing apps. And i've pretty much NEVER had a fully charged battery last for a whole day even with very little to no usage of the phone.
A few days ago my friend also got an evo but hasn't rooted it or installed any apps yet. And he is easily getting TWO days or more out of a charge.
so i decided to do a full wipe of my phone, and what do you know, I'm suddenly getting 2 days out of the battery, maybe even a little more then 2 days.
Previously, i had setcpu installed as well as system panel. And i was never able to figure out what was draining the battery. When i looked in system panel the only thing that was using the cpu a little bit was system. Pretty much every other app listed was showing 0.1% of cpu usage.
So i'd like to know if there's a better method to figure out what's draining the battery. Do I have to install apps one at a time and wait a few hours/a day to see if the battery starts going down? or is there a better method?

I always check the awake time versus the time on. If the wake time is very high that means there is an app acting up.
What I'll do to investigate which app is I'll just go to the little stock battery report thing and look at what is using my battery.
Also, it should be noted that be wary of the facebook app. That thing is a complete and total battery hog. It was draining my battery from 20% over the course of an hour.
I was checking the stock battery report - it wasn't showing me anything useful when the battery was going dead.
right now i'm getting amazing battery life compared to before.
90 minutes since the phone was unplugged and it's only down to 96% and that's with me using it a bit. Previously, it would have been down to 85-80% by now.
I just have no clue at all what was causing the drain. I was hoping there was a better method other then installing apps one at a time until the battery starts draining to figure out the culprit.
There's an app called Watchdog and it monitors the background activity happening on your phone. If some seems to be getting out of hand it will notify you.
I had the same problem I installed Smobile security and it was KILLING my battery. Watchdog was able to tell what it was.

It looks like watchdog does basically the same thing that system panel does. and system panel wasn't showing me anything unusual. System panel shows the cpu usage of apps - and none of my apps were showing high cpu usage.
I guess there's really no app that can actually show you the battery usage per app - it can only show you the cpu usage.
You can try SpareParts from the Market,it may help you see if you have a wakelock issue of some kind and its free so no harm if it doesn't help.

actually, the rom i am using already has spareparts in it. I'm not sure what you mean by wakelock though. How do i determine that? What is it?
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3 (rooted, but no custom ROM) through AT&T where it's losing battery power at a much higher rate than normal every once in a while.
Specifically, today, I was using the GPS feature and charging it in my car, and yet, even though it said it was charging, the battery continued to lose charge. Also, in the past, the phone has lost charge very quickly, and when I check the battery usage, "Android System" is very high on the list, up to 60% (with "Screen" being at 11%, which is usually the biggest culprit for me since I leave the screen on a lot). One time, I went to bed at around midnight and had forgotten to plug in my phone. When I woke up it was off. I turned it back on and looked at the battery stats using 3c's Battery Monitor Widget and saw that it lost charge quite slowly until about 5am, when suddenly the usage went up dramatically, and the phone went from about 60% to 0% in the course of an hour and a half of non-use.
Because this is not a problem I can reproduce on command, I'm not sure exactly what application/process is causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone else experienced things like this happening before? (Besides me having to pay for the "betterbatterystats" app?)
Edit: Also, "Android System" sometimes is sometimes listed as "gsiff_daemon" in the battery stats, and within 3c's Battery Monitor Widget, Android System is separate from "gsiff_daemon", where gsiff_daemon's usage is almost 15 times the usage of Android System.
Checkout this thread to see if the gsiff_daemon is your problem. tl;dr when the system is hot and tearing through the battery, go to system settings -> Developer options -> and check Show CPU usage. If gsiff_daemon is the top or second highest on the list, then that is your problem. To solve it for the moment, use system tuner, or something else, to kill gsiff_daemon. There is no permanent cure at the moment, other than to delete gsiff_daemon. Both of those fixes require root, the non-root fix is to reboot.
If gsiff_daemon is not on the list, then something else is the problem, but Show CPU Usage should give you an idea of what system process is running hard.

Thanks for the information. I'll do that if the problem arises again. However I also did something else that looks like it may have been the solution for my particular problem, which was disabling the "Samsung Push" service in the Application Manager. So far, my battery life has gone back down to very reasonable levels.

Interesting, I installed "micro cpu monitor" shows thin line at top of screen showing both cores.
I haven't had this happen for some time now but after playing with google play and maps downloading offline maps etc I noticed my 2nd core pegged out.
Having seen this in the past & ignoring it I now realize that majorly drains the battery as well as it getting warm.
A simple reboot seems to be the only thing that fixes it. Clearing ram and closing recent screens dies nothing to clear the "cpu jam".
If left alone, it always shows the culprit as "android system"
As to what part of "android system" I don't know.
But until we figure this out for good, that little micro cpu monitor. App is sweet for peace of mind to know all is well or whether a reboot is needed. For what it's worth, I also noticed that after the event, that my auto rotate to landscape was mysteriously unchecked?
If it jams again, I'll have to see if it gets unchecked again, unknown if there is a relation.

I read the thread about gsiff_daemon culprit. I had it listed as a possible battery drain culprit. The thread says the issue may happen after a hot reboot...which I did have. Killing gsiff_daemon was not immediately effective. I renamed the file so it wouldn't get used...like the thread recommended. I had to reboot to get normal battery drain back and have yet to see the issue again. But i wont know for some time...or maybe when/if i get a hot reboot...which is really rare. Do yourself a favor, and buy better battery stats. Its a must have tool...and it's not expensive.
I wonder if this problem has been solved with latest lj7 jellybean from sprint

so doing a full wipe does not always fix this.. but what does, is reboot and wait about 1 hour charging and it will calm down. this was just something i noticed. so what i did is wipe out my SD cards, both of them, cleared them out 100% formatted the External SD, and used recovery to format the internal. From there it seem to work, i put my stuff back, and it seems ok.
problem is, when you install a lot of rom's and have bad reboots some files get messed up and you have to do it all over again..
problem was with AOPK, CM and TW roms.

My experience with froyo/gb/ics is that things have been getting progressively better over the years. But with each so called UPGRADE of an OS or even APPS, we often have to deal with bugs or incompatibilities. I am eager to upgrade to a stock based JB soon, but wisdom says, for 20 things improved, there will be 5 things broken....or hurting in some way. Early adopters suffer the most as usually these issues get ironed out...most of them.
BUT...these stuck drains...wake locks etc., it seems they will happen when they do no matter how many issues get fixed. Over the years, I've had random standby drains caused by Maps/Nav. Maybe it's ok for months, then after a particular update, it's back...and unpredictable. The YES...a reboot, just like with a PC, is a quick short term workaround.
Finally, with the App CURRENT WIDGET, there is a provision to watch for high drain in standby. It watches MilliAmp (ma) readings over time..to determine if you have a rogue drain. That's different than monitoring the CPU. (Some drains do not cause much CPU activity) BUT UNFORTUNATELY, that app won't work with our S3's because of a lack of hardware support. Works great with HTC and many others. It's a bummer because I used to use it and have my HD2 reboot if a 15min consecutive high drain was recorded in standby....thereby saving the battery and usually killing the bug.

Hey guys, I was getting terrible battery life when the phone is idle. I looked into it to see what was going on. First off, I am on the stock rooted deodex'd ROM that scrosler posted. The biggest problem was an app I installed called Light Flow Lite, it controls your LED. It had over 6 hours of wakelock today. Removed it, not worth it at all.
The second thing I found that was interesting was after that, the phone STILL wasn't hitting deep sleep. I poked around in BetterBatteryStats and didn't find anything in there that would explain that. I then ran a "top" (in terminal or adb shell, type top -m 5 -t). Everything looked normal, nothing crazy. But I turned the screen off and let it run for a few seconds. I got a massive spike in CPU (anywhere from 15-35%) for system_server with the thread "WindowManagerPo" (which is likely short for WindowManagerPolicy).
I did some searching and it turns out that there is a bug with auto rotation that causes this. Essentially, the sensors don't stop looking for orientation change when the screen is off. I found reports of this in the Nexus S forums, GS3 forums, etc. This leads me to believe it is a Samsung kernel issue, since that's the least common denominator when it comes to the phones that had this issue. If you don't use auto rotation, you probably aren't encountering this issue (but keep reading for some good info below!) But I use auto rotation, how can I fix this?
Download an app called Auto Rotate Auto Lock. This app will turn off auto rotation when your screen turns off and enable it back when you turn the screen back on. This looks like this should really help to combat this bug and it handy for people like me who like auto rotation but don't want to have battery life suffer from something as stupid as this. I have verified that my phone now does enter Deep Sleep easily, and it hadn't hit that all day!
I also recommend an app called CPU Spy Plus (XDA thread). This app shows some very valuable information about your processor. You never want to see "Deep Sleep" under Unused CPU States as this means your phone isn't sleeping and is wasting battery!
It would also be good to download BetterBatteryStats (XDA Thread). This will help you nail down battery drain that you won't see in the stock Battery graph found in Settings. Things or importance are Partial Wakelocks and Alarms.
Monitoring these apps can really help you to increase your battery life on your phone. If anyone else is having bad battery life when idle, please try this out. I'm sure this will help you Feel free to ask questions, I will try to answer them as best as I can!
I have autorotation turned on but not the face orientation sensing. I haven't noticed a significant battery loss, at 19 hours with 10 left according to battery spy, but I'll give this a try and see if it increases it any.
i'll give it a shot. i was wondering how at work it would drain 2-4% an hour but at home with a crappy signal i'd only lose 6% all night.
at work it's in my pocket and at home it's stationary.

I have noticed Google Talk drains batteries when your signed in. By default your phone will sign in. If you don't use TALK, sign-out of the app and you will see increased battery life. Your wont ping the internet as much which saves batteries.

I haven't tried that app yet, however I have definitely noticed an improvement in battery life by disabling auto rotation. Thanks for the info.

after a bit of troubleshooting i found that battery monitor widget pro was the cause of my drain. after removing it i went from 2 to 3% an hour to 3% overnight. this really sucks as i love the info bmw colleects. this is the only device i have that suffers drain from the app.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have heard so much about the great battery life, but that has not been my experience. I had a Note 1 and I had no problems. With Note 2, the battery drains to about 1/4 after about 7 hours with limited use. I have turned off auto rotation, lowered the screen brightness, changed auto check settings for email, and don't see much difference. In addition, it seems a shame that I should have to figure out ways to use fewer functions to make battery last for phone calls, since I never had to do that before. Any ideas?
Thank you for this info. I consistently get a full days charge of of my phone but was pretty clueless when it came to what was draining my battery. I've used the rotation lock app and will report my results to see if I get even more remaining battery each day.

As viperboy mentioned, BetterBatteryStats is your friend. It really will help you figure out why your phone isn't sleeping like it should. It definitely takes some time to monitor and figure out what the readings mean to help point you to the apps or settings that're affecting your battery, but well worth it. I also like having a better understanding of how things work on my phone.
i did a double check on battery monitor widget pro and it started draining my phone again. as soon as i uninstalled it everything was fine again. this is with both cleanrom and blazer. i'll just wait til official support comes and try it again.

Have you tried the Perseus kernel? I hear the battery life is improved with it. So may be it doesn't have the rotate issue.
I've been using cpu sleeper and I easily get about 30 hours. Looks like the new apk fixed quad core. So when the phone is off it only uses one core and shuts down the other three and lights them back up when you need them.

That app is unnecessary. Pegasusq governor already does that by default. Goes to 1 core and 200mhz when screen off, at least that's how my Note 10.1 was. I assume it is the same here since the International GS3, GN 10.1, and GNII basically share the same kernel with a few minor differences.
I think I may try the perseus kernel today to see if it improves battery.. I haven't heard it does.. I just been seeing people do that benchmark stuff with it

Interesting... I have a script that reports on CPU freq and, when plugged into USB (maybe the wall charger too, didn't check), it appears that the kernel runs cpu0 and cpu3 all the time, even when screen off. With the phone unplugged, it went to using only cpu0 but didn't cap the freq. It was spending a good amount of time at the higher frequencies even though I had nothing running.

I installed the app to turn the rotation off when the screen is off so far everything good but when I get a call this goes crazy because the screen goes while in call. I know this because I have an smartwatch which it has a notification app and every message that the phone has my watch vibrates with that message and I had a call few minutes ago my watch started vibrating non stop until I hang up.

Though I have been reading these threads for quite some time now, I just joined so that I can post the issue that I am facing.
I am rooted and using Liquidsmooth v2.4
I am facing a battery issue. Battery life is short. I never survived more than 2 hours of screen time on my device which I know from these forums that is not normal.
The stuff I have tried but didn't help:
Wiped and factory reset on several occasions, both using the settings function and CWM
Flashed various roms (Cyanogen Mod, Carbon, Liquidsmooth, Stock rom)
Unroot to stock and root again
Changed to various more battery friendly CPU governors
Changed battery with a friend who is using the international version (which is using the same battery according to the Samsung website)
I am not in the states now and the local Samsung service centre refused to service it because they don't have the appropriate parts and also due to the difference in software. (I unrooted it and restored to stock before sending in.) They just looked at the model number and refused service; didn't do anything more.
I have attached some screenshots. There are no obvious wakelock issues and no app in particular is draining the battery. 50% power used on screen appears to be normal. I see horrendous wakelocking. Install BetterBatteryStats. Charge it up for a bit, reboot the phone, then let it idle for a couple hours. Then post screenshots of everything.
It might be the worst I've ever seen. Good news is it's probably not a hardware issue.
It also looks like half the time you had a poor signal. Data transfer on a poor signal can wat at your battery too.
Always use wifi when available.

Here are the shots for today.
I rethinked about the poor reception comment and wondered if any of my radios are malfunctioning or if my radios can work in the frequency bands here in Singapore. I called my local service provider to ask about the frequency bands and.it appears that my device's radios can recieve the GSM bands here although they suspect 3G may be an issue. Nothing concrete but I do hope to find out if that could be a possible reason for my battery drain.
I managed to squeeze past 2 hrs of screen time today by using as much wifi as I possibly can. This improvement in battery life probably means that data reception can really be an issue. It's not unlikely that both my home and workplace suffers from.bad reception but i do have a Q. If poor reception is an.issue, will the battery consumption by cell radio sky rocket?
For some reason the previous battery stats screenshots was only for about 5 hrs. i have refreshed and have uploaded the refreshed screenshots

This is not BetterBatteryStats. We already know your battery life blows. I want to know why, and BBS will tell me. I can't do a thing for you until you show me that. I think there is a free version on the forums, but it's cheap in the Play Store, and worth it. Get Greenify, too. You're going to need it. Greenify will prevent notifications from showing up for greenified apps. If you don't need notifications from Facebook (honestly, who does?), Greenify it. Maps, too. And disable Juice Defender for now, so I can see what is really happening.
Poor cell reception, if not on wifi, causes drain, yes. It seems to only get really bad when the phone can't hold a data connection.
Try turning off GPS. Also under Settings > Backup and Reset, turn off the Back Up My Data option.
Additionally, check the stickies in this forum. Woody has a fantastic Battery Thread that you should read if you haven't already.

Thanks everyone! I sheepishly searched better battery stats on Google play and.simply installed the first that popped up without looking closely. My bad. I've purchased the app and will post up screenshots soon. I didn't manage to grab the shots today as my batt went flat before I could. Should have kept a better eye.

PS: My GPS has been offed by default. Will disabling Google backup services help?

It cant hurt your battery life! Theres a number of things you can do for settings. Read woodys thread stickied here as its pretty much all there. One of the big batt drainers can be auto brightness btw.

Once you get a good cycle run with BBS, the screen shots we want to see are Since Unplugged/Process and Since Unplugged/Partial Wakelocks. Those two will help tell what is eating your battery and also what is causing all those wakelocks in your original screen shots.
If you are using Juice Defender, that will contribute to the wakelocks (but doesn't keep your device from entering Deep Sleep, so no worries there). I use it, but I have mine set up custom plus have done some basic build.prop edits regarding the RILs and wifi_supplicant_intervals.
My suspicion is that there is a rogue app that is transmitting data somewhere and that is not letting you sleep. If it is transmitting in a poor reception area then that puts ever more strain of things. You are not the first and wont be the last but Doc, Aero and I can help you figure it out.

I've installed greenify but did not add any apps while collecting these data. Juicedefender is also disabled. My screen time was less than 2 hrs.
I did some of the stuff listed in Woody's informative thread. Deleting the tombstone files, lost&found files etc.

Yup. Looks like you are broadcasting your location all over the place. Do you use Maps? If not close it and Greenify it.
Are you getting notifications from Facebook or have a "Check-in" thing going on?
Google Now>Settings> turn off what you don't use.
Settings>Location> Off.
Edit: Tombstones and Lost.dir files are just memory management and have nothing to do with battery.
Shots for today. Things are a little better but looking at my screen usage, maybe there's still a lot of room for improvement.
I've greenified just about all apps that may run in the background. Facebook, Maps, Google+, Gmail, Chrome, Google Search (I converted it into user app), dropbox, etc. Whatsapp, Viber and Wechat are spared as I needed them to be able to notify incoming messages. Juicedefender is on, with advanced settings - set to sync only once an hour. Maps have been set not to update my location although I didn't go to the extent of denying location access ( I use maps fairly often).
All these are rather aggressive steps and I do see improvement. What else can be done? Other than my messengers, all my notifications are essentially off.
Once again, thank you everyone for your time and effort.
Please stop using Juice Defender. I want to see what your battery life looks like without it now. And it's also responsible for the majority of your wakelocks. And if you could get us some ~4 hour idle BBS stats (during sleepy time), that would be fantastic.

I think you are heading in the right direction (8% deep sleep improvement). For this next test, please disable Juice Defender (don't turn it off through the app, but disable it in the app manager to make sure it can't run). Also, I'm hoping to get a test where the screen isn't on for more than a couple seconds, so I can get an accurate reading on the usage per hour.
I suspect the rest of your issues (bam_dmux_wakelock), are due to a bad cell connection for a good chunk of the time. Connecting to a wifi network will solve that. If you don't have a wifi network, you can turn on airplane mode, or set up some Tasker profiles to help with that.
Out of curiosity, how bright do you have your screen set? Obviously its a big drainer, but it seems like every time your screen is on the batt level plummets.

I have had a massive battery drain problem on my Note 2, a couple of days after the 4.3 update. While being idle during the night it loses 25% to 30% of its battery and while using it I can literally see the percentage drop. I have tried everything that I could find on the net. EVERYTHING! Nothing worked. These included: Factory reset (twice), letting the battery frain completely and then recharging it while the phone was switched off, switching off all sync,disabling bloatware including KNOX components (the actual KNOX app is not installed), installing only a few apps after factory reset, using Gsam, Wakelock detector, Deep sleep battery saver (which could not make my phone sleep), no GPS, no 3G, wifi on only when needed and more besides.
The phone is only one year old and unrooted. On 4.1.2 it had a beastly battery performance of almost 1.5 days of normal to heavy use, with 300 apps on it. Now it cannot go for more than a few hours with the same use.
I cannot say for sure but it seems to me that the drain is the same when it is sleeping and when I am using it. Wakelock has given me a 75% awake time even though I only use it for 15-20% of the day at most nowadays. Battery settings show everything normal, or at least I think so, eg Screen 35%, Android OS 15-28%, Voice calls 10%, Android system 5-15%, Cell standby 7%, Device idle 4%, Media server 4%. The batttery chart shows a constant steep drop all the time.
The problem started one day when the Media server went mad consuming 50% of the battery. After I did the factory reset it has never again been a problem but the drain still persists.
I have also read that it's a mess up between syncing of Samsung apps and Google services, but I have no way of verifying that.
Can anyone help?

I had the very same problem until yesterday myself but think I found a solution on the web.. Uninstall Google Search and Google Play Services and the goto the Play Store and wait for them to reinstall and that's it....! As I found that there is a bug in Google Services (Nlpwakelock and Location service)

Download wakelock detector from the play store. It detect which app is waking your device (both screen and cpu) by list.. Then download greenify from the play store and herbinate (greenify) upper most apps from wakelock detector. Hope you can solve your problem

Thanks. I already have Wakelock Detector on. I mistakenly wrote "defender" instead of detector on the original post. It gives me Viber and Messenger as the most active wakelock apps. But they both were not installed when the problem started. Besides, on the 4.1.2 they created no problems. In essence I believe that Wakelock Detector cannot help much. Whatever this problem is , it is well hidden. Thanks for your interest and help anyway. Much appreciated.

Which kernel you are using? And also i recommend using Greenify. Widgets usually eat a lot of battery, I went from battery lasting only 8 hours to get my battery use only 30% in 8 hours.
What i did: installed wakelock detector, gsam battery monitor and better battery stats.
Monitorized the wakelocks.
Applied greenify to the apps which were waking most
Removed widgets which were waking alot
Installed Toggle 2G.
Kernel settings: 200-1600mhz | zzmoove | AFTR+LPA | Multicore power saving (SCHED_MC) = 0 | GPU = stock settings

I finally decided to try the age old blackberry cure-all: "if in doubt, pull it out" (the battery). Since the entire issue seemed to be related to battery caused problems (ie slow charging, fast drain, etc) it made a lot of sense.
And it worked.
I think the main reason this isn't more commonly tried to fix issues on Android is the same reason I didn't try it earlier. My case is pretty serious and isn't easy to remove. I'm glad I did take the time to take the case off though or I could have ended up wiping my phone.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have already taken the battery on and off several times. It had no improvement. The phone is only a year old, that is why I don't believe the battery is the culprit. Besides, problems started only after the 4.3 update. Before that it was working perfect. Too much of a coincidence.

I'm not saying the battery is faulty in any way - however removing the battery and letting the phone power drain completely seems to stop whatever process is running under the buggy 4.3 long enough for it to work again as intended. It's basically just a more thorough way to reboot.
As I said, I've read all sorts of suggestions, many of which don't work for everyone (such as the factory reset) - this is hopefully just one more thing for people to try before they end up wiping their phone in desperation. I mainly posted here in the hopes that others with this issue that may not be forum members can get some more suggestions.
At least for me, wakelock and all the other diagnostic tools at my disposal showed nothing different to before the update. Many other people have found that the Android System is using a lot more of their battery than normal or some other apps are involved - if this is the case, it's likely to be a combination of things causing the issue (the firmware, the drivers, apps, hidden Samsung processes, etc).
Also, for what it's worth, I found that Knox supposedly wasn't installed (when I find it in the apps list, the button to install it is showing...). But it's showing in the list of apps so it must already be installed. I dug through the list of running processes (had to show the system processes too) and I discovered that several Knox and some other new Samsung processes were indeed running.
One other quick tip - If you wanted to check/tweak the 'developer options' and can't seem to find it any more, that's because it's now hidden since 4.2 - go to 'About Device' and tap 7 times on the Build Number. I tried disabling all background processes however it seems this only disables application level processes, not system level processes but if you've tried everything else, it can't hurt to try playing around with some of the options in there.

I think you are right. It is probably a combination of many things. I have opened the Developer options some time back. The one thing that I do for sure in there is limit background processes to 4. Besides that I don't experiment much, exept maybe to change transition animation scale. I am actually thinking of rooting the phone and downgrading to 4.1.2. It was just fine before. I can live without the 4.3 add ons.

The only battery apps on my phone are the 3 mentioned above, so I don't know what the battery monitor that keeps my phone awake is. The drain existed before I installed these apps. I have read that Chrome could prevent the phone from going to sleep but it is disabled on my phone.

I faced same battery drainage issue, after installing wanam kernel and freezing all bloatwares through Titanium Backup. I'm satisfied with my battery now.

Disable sync always, enable when needed.
Disable wifi always scan from settings
Display set to auto
Uninstall apps of playstore you rarely use
Use widgets on lock and homescreen as less as you can (I don't use any)
Disable motion on settings
Freeze all bloatwares by TB except allshare and samsung content agent
Install Agni kernel, from agni control app-
profile: normal
Governor: pegasusq
Scheduler: cfq
Don't touch other tweaks, hardly you can tweak sound boost.
THIS GIVES ME A SATISFIED BATTERY STATUS.
