Hi, so I got the 5T a month or so ago and I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted it. Of course the Barclays mobile banking app doesn't work with root. To my surprise I got an offer for an OTA to Oreo, I expected it not to work but I tried it and it did. It just reinstalled the stock recovery and 'unrooted' it. I was fine with this as I was going to unroot anyway as I needed to use the Barclays banking app. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Barclays app and it somehow is detecting root still. I checked with the root checker app and it says I don't have root access, what do? I need to check my bank balance.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Hi, have you tried to relock your bootloader? Some banking apps will not work if bootloader is unlocked.

Ah, I see, I might try locking the bootloader to check if that is the problem and just make sure that it's not an issue with my phone, then I'll unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom, root etc.
I could just use an old phone of mine to check my balance,
Thanks for the help!

I am on 3.2.8 unlocked but not rooted. My Canadian Scotiabank mobile wallet is the default payment method in T&P. Although the app itself doesn't complain, nothing happens when touching the pay terminal.
Could be that I need to have the bootloader locked?

You have answered your own question there. With your bootloader unlocked, it will fail the SafetyNet checks, and Android Pay refuses to work. Relock the bootloader and everything will be wonderful and tappy again.

Thanks for your quick reply. Interestingly, I have found earlier all kinds of answers on bootloader state and t&p, I will try it that way then. I assume root is out of question too..

Yeah, safetynet checks lots of things to determine if the phone has been "modded" in anyway. You can run SafetyNet yourself to see it with an app like this:

I waited the 72 hours and then ran the program on my PC for the Mi Unlock, and then afterwards I wiped the phone clean, flashed TWRP, and put on miui10, forgetting that doing a data wipe resets the Mi Unlock status. Do I really need to reunlock it, cause if so it will delete all my data again..
Edit: It's just odd because on the bootloader screen, 'fastboot oem device-info' shows my bootloader unlocked still, I have Magisk installed, running joeykrim's Root Checker from google play shows root access not properly installed, running flar's DevCheck from google play shows the device rooted, I have BusyBox installed , and lastly, in the Developer options, OEM Unlocking is ticked on, but doesn't say already unlocked, and the Mi Unlock status still shows locked. Lots of conflicting info here, so just a bit wary since this is my first Xiaomi phone.
I went ahead and tried unlocking again with the tool and I get this (see screenshot)
Usually unlocked only once, but if your device is locked again, it can be unlocked without any damage. Don't know what ROM you use If it is a world class ROM, ctf will not pass. For magisk, you have to modify the fingerprint to pass. Try studying. You have to do it. Good luck.

WEll everything is running fine being rooted. MAgisk SAfetyNet passes, rooted apps work fine, but Mi Unlock still shows my phone is 'locked'm but fastboot says it's unlocked. And I'm using the official miui_MIMIX2Global_V10.2.2.0.ODEMIXM_a92827160b_8.0 rom and fw_chiron_miui_MIMIX2Global_V10.2.2.0.ODEMIXM_a92827160b_8.0 firmware
You don't have to worry. I think your device is already unlocked. If the device is still locked, you cannot install twrp.
yeah thats why im confused. everything works fine. i guess i wont worry about it unless i come to a problem
I've asked this on Reddit already, but thought it was worthwhile to ask here as well
It's been a long time (3 years) since I had a device that I'd been able to root and I wanted to make sure I'm ready to do it on my UK 7T whenever a solution becomes available (I've checked here and it seems a bit hit and miss at the moment). In order to get my device prepped should I just unlock the bootloader and wait for someone to get TWRP and Magisk working? Basically, I want to avoid losing all my stuff in x weeks time when the process becomes safer/simpler and from memory I think unlocking the bootloader causes everything on the device to be wiped.
TLDR
2 real questions:
Does the process of rooting the device wipe it, or does that only happen when unlocking the bootloader?
If I unlock the bootloader when I first get the device, will this be me prepped for rooting later on without losing all of my data?
Thanks
If you're not going to install a custom Rom, you're prepared for root without losing your data. I did it too yesterday when my 7T arrived, right after update oxygenos.

I can't see myself moving from OOS, I just want root. So you're saying if I unlock bootloader from the off I'll be good for rooting in the future?

I'm changing from an iPhone 7+ to Oneplus 7T and got it yesterday. Why you don't make a backup when it's time for root? So far I can't see Custom ROMs or a working TWRP for the Oneplus 7T.

Yes, i lost data when unlocking the bootloader but then it was okay while rooting. I think you should unlock the bootloader and root as soon as you get the phone, but after updating to latest 10.0.4 version
Unlocked Bootloader / no Magisk Hide
Consider that apps like GooglePay or other apps will refuse working since they detect the unlocked bootloader state as possible security leak. GPay says, that due unlocked bootloader it does not want to initialze it.
So after facing this problems I would recommend, since magisk is limited to patching the actual boot.img, to stay on locked bootloader and unlock it after a secure method exists to install magisk and maybe TWRP. Otherwise, if you donot use these kind of apps, you can stay with unlocked BL.
I have followed all the official steps on MIUI.com to unlock the phone, it did seem to work, erased all my data, reset the phone etc. After rebooting I tried Root Checker and was shocked that the phone was not rooted. What did I miss? I thought unlocking means rooting.

Unlocking the BL does not mean rooting
it just allow you to install a custom recovery (twro/Ofox...)
then you can flash custom roms or kernels or magisk which is root
Thank you loopypalm. I managed to get root finally.
I used the steps in this article: How to Root Redmi Note 9 via Magisk without TWRP
I want to update my phone but it just doesn't work because apparently xiaomi is blocking the update to android 11, I dont get new updates and can't update manually either. I even contacted Xiaomi support and all they said was "you should go to the store where you bought the product." lmao
I know unlocking the bootloader and installing a rom would work, but this way my bank app would be unusable for me, so I can't do it.
Is there any way to flash my device to a new version without unlocking bootloader?

Just unlock bootloader then lock it again by flash fastboot rom (Clean all and lock option). And just a few bank apps that not work for unlocked bootloader.

I've read something that said relocking a global phone breaks it, isn't that right?
Also, my bank app is one of those that doesn't work with unlocked bootloader.

It just got error if you try to lock bootloader with some other regions. Example: China phone with other roms. If you lock bootloader with same varient, it will be like a new phone with updated.
And almost bank apps problem is safetynet pass and root related, not unlocked bootloader. Go search online or find other group to check your bank app work or not. You can also join rmn8p group on Telegram with some useful guide over there.

I have a redmi device and I have rooted it with bootloader unlocked and safetynet works properly. The only condition is that you need to install it properly. All apps such as Netflix and gpay wotk properly
