Got it!!!! Samsung S8+ port??? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Okay so I have been trying and trying to create a rom that I would enjoy. Being that, I really liked my s8+. Before anyone starts bashing and saying get a s8+ then, I won't. Went through 2 and just like the features(well sort of need them since I had a lot of stuff that's important on Sammy's cloud). My question is, could a Dev please port something like it over?
Edit**. So I have been up searching and I am just going to build it. This is where I get to learn how to build my own rom,so, if all goes well I would hopefully like to release it here when I'm done with it. (I hope it's as easy as building a custom Linux distro? But haven't built anything for 7 years.)

I wish you luck in your endeavor. Please do share this source-built AOSP/TouchWiz abomination when you have it built, I'd love to see what that looks like on my PiXL!

Still new to the whole building thing so its taking me a minute. I'm having trouble finding ways to bring Samsung's port over. I read that the kernel plays a part in it to so, I know nothing of what I'm doing haha. Guess I will have to learn kernels too.
If anyone has suggestions or ideas and want to contribute by all means you are welcomed to do so. Also been looking into bringing different ports over. I'll figure it out eventually.

Sorry but it won't happen. Closed source stuff would need to be reverse engineered.
Maybe treble could help but I know very little about it.
I wouldn't hold your breath.

Yeah shux I was just about to post about it. I checked all through GitHub before breaking my computer. When fixed I will look into different ports cause I know we can get one done.

will Android ever be complete?

Not trying to be a jerk, this is a sincere question. I really like my Tilt2 and don't want to get a newer phone with Droid on it. My phone is really, imo, built solid and has almost never failed to perform. I know it's a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me. I really would love to have a fully functional Droid that I could use. Mainly because I really don't like Apple and won't get an Iphone, even though I think the I-4 is a cool phone. Is there anything I can do as a forum member to help get this project further along? I was wondering if we could all maybe tackle 1 thing each and help out. Might not be anything I can do, but I'm willing to help if I can.

I don't think anyone can be sure that Android will ever be finished. The developers have done much for this device, but with the HD2 finally able to boot the Linux kernel, I think most of the support we had will move towards getting Android on better, newer, and more capable devices like the HD2. In addition, most of the remaining problems with getting Android completely working are the ones that were very difficult to begin with. Things like initializing hardware correctly, and figuring out how to get the various parts of the device to talk to each other. I'm honestly kind of doubtful that we will see more development with Android on the Pro2, since AFAIK only one person is working on it (though I hope I'm wrong).
it seemed at first that android for the touch pro would never work but now the only thing that doesnt work is the camera. maybe the touch pro 2 will get to that level some day. who knows.
So from what I gathered, the Tilt 2 won't be having any further development to work with Android? I also still have my Fuze. Is that development continuing? If so, maybe I will keep my Fuze instead of selling it and use it to test with Android?
By the way, what is the real name for the Tilt 2? Is it Rhodium or ?
Thanks guys, this place really ROXS!
I await your replies!

I'm not sure what you mean by complete. New builds are released all the time, etc. If you mean all hardware functioning, here is the list from Reefer's thread:
NOT WORKING IN THIS BUILD:
BT
Sound (in call mic and earpiece work, no ringtones or music)
Camera
Opengles: using software rendering for the time being.
Battery Meter
For sound, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121743
One guy has made an NDISwrapper for Android...amazing.
For HW3D, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125379
Battery Meter is working very well. It's not accurate (seems like it's 10-15% off) but it shows low, which means you can get charged up in time with no problems. I also recall phhusson saying this WILL be 100% some day, it's just very tedious and time consuming, and everyone is more concerned with making things run better and on more hardware.
In other words, development is still very much active and some very smart people are working on these problems. I believe Mr. Steve Ballmer said it best here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zEQhhaJsU4
If you're patient, more of the pieces will come together soon enough and Android for our device will be more complete (relatively speaking). For the record, I'm very content with the state of things. All development from here is just icing on the cake
Mods, if I'm not supposed to link to outside forums, just delete them and/or let me know. That's just where the more technical info is.
i thought sound was fixed already today there was a new build for rhodium?.
i think sound just got added but not for music. I think they upgraded the sound in the earpiece and speaker works now.

This is incorrect. Please leave the release posts to those doing the releasing.

This is also incorrect. TP2 development is moving along faster now than it has been in a while. Not everyone wants a HD2 just beacuse it can boot android. Sure it has a fancy screen but no hardware keyboard, so i'm not even considering it as an option for a new device. Also, for future reference there are quite a few more than just one person working on this...
Also, define finished? The OS itself is in constant development. Will Android itself ever be finished? I hope not.

ok, point taken. When will Android ever be fully functional on the Tilt 2 phone?
Now! Then! No, Then! When it's done. This isn't a native OS, don't go in expecting perfection. Go in expecting nothing and be amazed with every update. The alternative is to port it yourself. Good luck with that.

My initial question was pretty point blank. Don't expect perfection, just would like full functionality on my phone because I like the AnDroid OS. The question was never meant to be a gripe, not sure why it struck a chord with you. I don't know how to port it, so luck is not needed. Thanks anyway

Are you serious?!?! What you are asking is very disrespectful because You obviously haven't even read the FAQ/WIKI because it states:
5) When will the next release be out? I can't wait to get more features on my phone!
The next release will be out when the developers are able to get it ready. They are contributing their time for free and can't work on it full time. If you want to help speed development, make a donation to one of the main developers to help encourage them, don't pester them by asking a million times when the next release will be out when they won't know until it is ready.
hope this helps clear things up.

You might as well wait a few months, there will be a bigger, better, brighter android (as we have seen the last few months) - if you can't wait, the HD2 is very nice.

you didn't have a clue mmh ? what where you thinking ? that those people are well paid for doing it, and because of that your in position to come here and whine ?
and it's nothing about wearing hearts on sleeves, since it's only repeating the obvious like breaking in open doors.
however, I have some question :
Is it possible to have a feedback from some developer if it is a question of money to make things go further. if yes, what would it be approximately.
because, it is nice to encourage people to donate, but I didn't read anywhere from some person actually working on the project that it is indeed a question of money.
maybe this would be the first thing to find out ? from the developers side, is there anything that "non-aware" people can make to get things go further ?

I bought my HD2 as soon as it came out but I still want android on the tp2. I know its frustrating waiting for what seems forever. If you really cant wait go get a better more capable phone. The hd2 is great multipurpose device.

[Q] need someone to help with learning how to make roms

i wanna get into the dev community. I realized i use what people make, but unlike alot of people, i wanna give back a little. Basically what im asking for is someone for me to message throughout this whole ordeal, and help me with some step by step things, walkthroughs, videos, anything to help me get going. Id prefer them to be roms devs themselves. i also enjoy long walks on the beach and just getting to know each other
I'm in the same boat bro. I wanna get into it as well, although I don't have the time to devote to it right now.

there are numerous tutorials on xda, rootz, and other sites on building from source and/or making sense (oem skin) roms
theres no quick step to get going, though building straight from someones source (which isnt really developing) requires just a few commands once ur build environment is set up
really though, most rom devs (well maybe not most, but many) started with theming first to get gain a working knowledge of the structure/set up of a rom and what controls what...as well as basically smali editing/apk decompiling and the tools needed
aosp requires a semi working knowledge of java to actually build your own things rather than syncing and building someone elses
there are plenty of devs that enjoying helping new folks out...but its kind of understood that you ll do some research on your own and have some knowledge of what ur doing...its a lot to kind of ask someone to talk you through every single thing that goes into it
from my own personal experience it, it took me several months of theming before i felt confident enough to tackle a rom project...and even then they were rom collaborations with people a lot smarter than me (sbrissen, adrynalyne, imnuts, etc)

I'm taking a java course this summer to help me make some ROMs. I would recommend it.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
i would but i dont have the time nor the money for it. my dads got his masters in computers tho i could probably get help from him for things like that.
My parents gave me their old laptop, I have ubuntu on it. When I get the time, I want to create my ROM based on CM9. I want to learn Java too, because I would like to do some themeing too.

I know this is a question but I'm hoping to get some help on development for this and the info I gather may be usefuluseful for other ROM development
I guess what I'm mainly asking for is someone with dev experience to help me walk through setting up my environment and getting this going, and someone who doesn't mind endless newbish questions. And possibly doing a little bit of development along side of me if I run into something I can't handle

I should have a disclaimer that I am not a full developer really and anything I say can and should be corrected by a real dev but I tend to know a good deal more than the average end user so therefore I try and help where I can
That said, from what I've seen from other devs getting the ROM on the device isn't that hard once you know how and assuming it's not some tricky ROM meant for a specific device (that said, MIUI is the kind of ROM that to me seems like it should be easy to get on a wide number of devices). So, if you want MIUI, it's probably best to ask for someone to port it and if it isn't too hard (I don't think it is) it's just a matter of the dev being nice enough
Teaching you to compile the ROM on your own though, may actually take a lot more time and effort. If you want to learn to make ROMs, which actually is rather easy compared to other parts of developing if you're not making your own from scratch, you could learn to do that, but it's probably better to learn the basics and go to a thread for it.
If you just want MIUI for your KF2, it's probably easiest to ask a dev to do it for you.
As always, any dev feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Also what device does para run on? Easiest way to port a ROM is make sure its one that already works on a similar device ( porting miui for kindle fire to the kindle fire 2) also the ROM your trying to port should have the same screen density. The three links up top seem to be excellent sources of information
for anyone thats interested i believe im almost done with an alpha version of the port, im asking a few newbish questions as im teaching myself as i go and im gonna try to have some people take a look at what i did just to make sure theres no insta brick on flashing it.

Oh I forgot about HD....hmmm. I am not sure how difficult patching things from other ROMs in is, but it seems like the next hascode release should fix most if not everything majorly wrong and I think that would be a better base point for building ROMs. It could be easy though and the thing is pretty damn stable. I've only ever had one issue beyond HD and re-flashing fix it so, possibly this is a good build to work off of
Yeah, it seems no one is really on right now but later they may be able to help, especially in IRC

One would assume but with semi limited knowledge on them I come to two assumptions, first off is the simple fact that I know the partition tables are different. So if the script tries to send something somewhere it doesn't belong it could be bad, second I see some differences in the scripts that I don't understand and there for do not want to mess with them until I do or someone who does will explain.
My goal is to not brick any testers kfires just seems bad for business

After looking more in depth at the update script I saw one major difference...
Which is to do with the dev/block
So I went with the previous ROMs update script and I'm making the zip for initial testing now.
Fingers crossed

Work so far...(development for the device blind.)

Just wanted to give some heads up... FIrst off i wanted to thank you guys for getting twerp and a stock dump of the rom that was a major help..
Secondly i wanted you to know where im at ..
After spending 2 days in repo hell (god gotta love Ubuntu for that.)
I have started working on this devices device tree for the kernel and the device itself...
So far im working on 2 branches from the same tree sense there fundamentally built the same way ill fork them for less confusion after...
What does this mean... Well im working on Ubuntu (Touch OS) for this device.. ( i dono i just love the way it looks and alot of the features for it.) Secondly sense Ubuntu os is based off asop atm it will also help other devs Get CM roms faster.. I am no kernel dev so if any Kernel devs would love to help once i get enough of the device tree up ill give out the github info... WHile we dont mind forking for your own ends.. It would be nice if people could send push and pull requests so we can have one master source... ( dont worry you will always be credited were not about kanging. )
Sincerely,
Team Acid.

I am no kernel dev so if any Kernel devs would love to help once i get enough of the device tree up ill give out the github info... WHile we dont mind forking for your own ends.. It would be nice if people could send push and pull requests so we can have one master source... ( dont worry you will always be credited were not about kanging. )
Sincerely,
Team Acid.

No not yet but then i havent built anything atm so when i start doing builds im sure something will come up... I dont expect to many issues as mali has a nice tendancy to release source for there gpu's well they used to at lest... The whole thing is to use as much open source drivers as humanly possable while it makes development time longer (some features may not work as well as the pritortary blobs in the beginning) it does help the community more when we want to do things and can work directly with the source instead of ****ty hacks and workarounds

I wish you luck. Mali driver source comes from the ddk which requires money and has licensing issues. The other code for gralloc/hwcomposer/mobicore is ancient and a good chunk of it doesn't compile against the kernel headers out of the box. I could go on but I'm in week three and I don't have the graphics subsystem up yet.
its good to know that ... KInda had a feeling when u asked that question its because well you been working on something lol... well im trying like i said when i start actually building im sure im going to come across a ton of issues.

That's fine
Send me a message once you're ready to test
I'd be willing to do what's needed for testing on the sprint variant. We still don't have a working recovery and I've been trying to teach myself while juggling work/school and a family.

Sure when i have something to post i will been really hetic at work so i dont really have alot of time to do anything...

why are we waiting...

Waiting for the sources that is, what are porters planning on sticking on this? Personally I want the sources to attempt to port Sailfish, only reason I bough the phone. I currently have the Nexus 5 and the OS runs buttery smooth thanks to the porters over at #sailfishos-porters
Am even wondering did I make a mistake buying this device when the Nexus 5, is more than enough omph to power the OS. But I've got it and gotta try, to atleast expand my own knowledge base.
also do you guys know how chainfire managed to build the kernel for it without the sources?
WTF?
The phone has been out for less than a month. Have some patience or start learning to develop yourself, rather than creating a useless thread, just to whine.
I got my 5x last Tuesday and forgot how little I like "pure" android. I think the usual progression is flash aosp then flash cyanogenmod once the nightlies start to stabilize. I know I'm in the minority but the nexus phones usually have too much Google on them for my taste. I like the hardware, but the software is another story.
At any rate, I'm also waiting for the binaries and device tree so that I can start building my own.

If you knew much about how android works, you'd know that chainfire didn't make a kernel. He took the boot image and modified some fstab, prop, and sepolicy stuff, repackaged it, and released it. He didn't build his own kernel.
In any case, I'm curious about this, how long does it usually take google to release their sources?

oh yeah Ill just go and create a kernel, and while am at it, I may as well write my own drivers. Maybe I'll call my kernel linox, and adopt this policy of sharing my source code so other people could collaborate. Maybe using some sort of version control, call Hit or something, maybe on some website called HitHub.
Yeah that sounds like a good way to develop it...Or Google could hurry the **** up and release the sources and binaries so I wouldn't have to.
Well if you read my post you'd see I was curious about what people wanted to port.

Not make but people have been saying it was built with forceencrypt disabled so I thought he built the kernel with that flag, (ie he had the sources). But it seems thats not the place to change it
Wow the self-entitlement is real nowadays, patience bro. You cant have everything instantly when you want it.

what to expect an open source based phone to have the sources with it?
No I know I can't have everything when I instantly want it, but really what could be the reason for the delay. Since am already pretty pissed about the force encryption.

I'm sorry, but you sound like a whiney little 12 year old who is used to having everything they want RIGHT when they want it. Kind of sums up the turn this forum has taken over the past couple of years.
In the real world you'll learn that good things take time. The phrase, "patience is a virtue" holds true merit.
Offer a bounty if you're that impatient.

I'm waiting too- it's not like google is still working on the binary drivers and just building the production rom with hacked up device trees until they get the real ones. I could be mis-remembering, but in the past, I thought the factory roms and binary drivers were available the day the devices were released.
I can certainly understand being patient with devs who are working on roms (for free/beer/donations), but google is done with the rom and has already released it to production. The factory image for the 6p was delayed as well. It's not a secret- they are going to push it to every one who bought a phone. My conspiracy theory is that google is trying to bury aosp, and merging android and chrome will be another stab into the heart of both privacy and freedom.
and its outtt
