Hey guys,
This is a little prototype I am working on called soundark.
The whole concept behind it is based off of a amphitheater how its shape allows the sound to bounce off and be directed to the audience.
the soundark has ho need for batteries or power source it takes the audio emitted from your phone and directs it towards you. I hope to make them more solid but for now its just a prototype but eventually I plan on making them for other phones but for now the first one is made for a vibrant and other galaxy s models
SoundArk Keeps your audio from being washed out!
If you like the project and would like to see further progression please rate
I will soon post a video showing you the prototype SoundArk in action so stay tuned!!!
Pretty cool. I like the design. I know this would work well, because I find myself cupping my hand over the speaker to direct the sound in front of it. I can imagine something designed specifically for that purpose would have a lot better sound, and it looks great too.
Very nice. I am interested on testing one out when you are ready for production!
im hoping to put them in production i hope to build many more for more phones not only the galaxy S vibrant im hoping to get it done very soon this was the second build that is much more effective then the first version
i will be building more models and experimenting with different types possibly including a speaker version if interested in my project pm me
I like the idea, however the way you have the multiple ways to place the phone in (horizonally and vertically) is kind of redundant. An idea would be,to place the spot directly in the middle and have the middle pane rotatable. Just my 2 cents great idea though
Edit:,oh ya and a spot for the usb cord possibly?

i dont want to burst any bubbles, but have you seen this?

@bdroc
Have you tried the clingo sound sphere?
looks like it is universal, hopefully it'll be able to hold a 4.3 screen phone
At $35, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a set of portable, rechargeable speakers to plug into the headphone jack? I've bought a couple of such things for my employees for $20, which sound great, even in a loud warehouse.
@toma, no i havent...i dont plan on it, but it most likely holds a phone that large judging by the pictures
@jriot...the plus, im assuming, with this is that its also a stand and it has no wires. but i agree 35 is a bit steep for a plastic dome.
if it folded into a small package that would be cool
...and will send it back tomorrow.
It's a pity, the display is even worse than my 2 year old LG optimus speed, and I'm not talking about the viewing angles. Colours are washed out far more as expected, the icons look terrible compared to my old phone. I tried to calibrate the display as mentioned somwhere here, didn't get better.
Besides the display the vibration sucks. I like typing text with a little vibration, but ZL is far too loud. I cant't feel vibration, I just hear it.
I wanted a new phone to make a step forward, but not in this direction...
Damn,I'm really disappointed, I thought this is THE phone for me...
So goodbye sony community!

I am planning to get the white one, then see your post.I've experienced the same screen color issue with The Xperia T
I think you mean realistic display rather than over saturated crap that's on most phones. I actually find the display
Temperature with the styling quite mature and refreshing.
The vibration needs some tweaking but it's not a deal breaker.

Vibration can be set to low there's an option in the menu, seems like you never liked the zl from the start. Most of things you are complaining can be fixed, well except the viewing angles

I find it comical that members feel the need to open a new thread only to voice their displeasure. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck with whichever device you obtain next. I wish I had such trivial things to fixate on as vibration sensation.
I had a previous unit where the vibration was loud it made a very cheap sound. I eventually replaced the unit due to a bad camera everything was noisy. My new unit is much better, the vibration is no longer strange in any way. Maybe some bad units going around.

Lol... yes, that's why i bought it...
Do you mean the colors are washed out head on? If thats the case, then you should try getting a different unit. My screen looks really good. Its only when you tilt it does the screen wash out real quick. It sucks and detracts the quality of the phone, but the pros of the ZL far outweigh something which wont matter to me as i rarely look at the screen from an angle.
As for the vibration, I didn't notice yet before you mentioned it. But yes, it does seem a little weak.
I got my phone like 3 days ago, not having any issues with it. Screen looks great while watching videos or playing games. I don't need that blue tint or any of those oversaturated crap.

Yep, thats why I absolutely detest AMOLED screens! However, no reason Sony couldnt have put in a LCD that looks as good as the One X. The screen on that phone is spectacular

+1, no need for a new thread.. if it was an in-depth review that's another story...
up to the user
I just read this thread now and I agree good luck to you on whichever phone you like and hopefully it is all you want it to be.
I have now gotten into a seemingly 6 months or less cycle before I decide to try something new...ugh
The only thing I have to say is having an unlocked phone is so much better as you are not tied into the cell providers Android update cycle (if they want it) and their bloatware.
One more thing, having had a note I am not a fan in general of the crazy colore on the AMOLED screens.
As it is it is a feeling - I just love my ZL (and my Nexus 4 is going bye bye - I do have a Nexus 10)

As compare to Nexus 4,How is looking your Xperia ZL Colors(I'm not asking about viewing angle), is it possible to Put Stock Android in Zl if yes anyone try it,How the experience feel with stock?
hmm
Those over saturated screens make the screen look amazing. Why did you guys choose to get an xperia? I'd rather get the s4 because its easier to root and plus there's always a ton of ROMs for it
I like Sony for their design. If samsung would change the design from plastic to something better then I wouldn't mind buying one from Samsung. The phone feel too light and like holding a toy in your hand...

The colors seem very comparable, neither phone has over-saturated colors. The ZL screen is gorgeous, but if you are looking for a deal, the Nexus is it for 350.

Screen tech is a matter of personal choice. Those over saturated colors give me a raging headache if i look at the screen for a long time, i.e playing games, watching movies. I dont know how exactly to put this but LCD screens just LOOK more sophisticated and toned down. Uhh, like a printed sheet of paper. Unlike AMOLED which looks like a kindergarten kid went wild with crayons on the screen.
And Samsung phones easier to root? Building ROMS for them are a PITA. Ask every single dev who has completely abandoned Samsung phones. there might be plenty of ROMs sure, but all of them have some or the other problem. Not to mention the fact that Samsung are a bunch of liars.

Completely agree, here. I came to the ZL from nothing but Samsung phones (Captivate, Galaxy Nexus, SGS3), and I much prefer the ZL's screen to any Samsung phone screen. For one, I can never read Sammy screens when outdoors on a cloudless sunny day, even with the brightness at maximum. I have had no issues reading the ZL screen in the same conditions, which I'll take over better viewing angles and oversaturated colors any day. As for comparing to LG screens, well, if I'm not mistaken, LG also makes amoled screens, so I wouldn't expect much different than Sammy screens there -- last I checked, the two were suing each other over the technology. The ZL compared to the N4 -- I must say, I finally saw an N4 in person this past weekend, and the screen on it is quite beautiful. I still like my ZL, though, and the lack of LTE radios in the N4 makes it a non-issue for me, no matter how pretty the phone might be (and I'm not keen on a glass back anyways).
I do agree that it would have been great had Sony used something as nice as the LCD in the One X, though. That screen was amazing looking (I had the pleasure of seeing one in person when my brother had a One X for awhile).
Good luck to the OP in finding a device that meets those expectations -- the ZL is the first AT&T LTE capable unlocked phone to hit the USA, and that's a big part of why it intrigued me, too. I suspect it'll be awhile before there's another device like that ...
For those of you that have this phone, and have had it since close to it's release date, what are your opinions?
I am going to be purchasing a new phone, for use with WindMobile in Canada (i.e. it must be an AWS phone). As far as I can tell this is my best option because I use my phone mostly as a camera so my #1 interest is a camera that does not lag and will open quickly. I also am a fairly heavy user for NUMBER of apps. I have a lot installed and switch between them frequently. I don't play games or watch videos so graphics don't matter much.
The kicker here is I am REALLY hoping to keep this phone for 2 years at least. Do you think that this phone will last? Keeping in mind I don't care about being behind on new technology. I only care that it can handle my volume of use and won't sputter and choke to a slow after 6 months use like the one I have now.
I currently have an Optimus 2X but it is dying. It lags incredibly between tasks and the plastic covering the camera is poor quality and I had to rip it off so the lens is mostly unprotected now. I don't want to deal with stuff like this is I am going to buy a brand new phone. Do you think the Xperia ZL is the right choice?
p.s. I saw a review of the camera where the reviewer said that the photos look great on the BRAVIA screen but once on a computer screen are not very good. Has this been your experience? What about printing?
p.p.s. would appreciate comments about how rugged it is also as I work as a nanny with two 24 month old toddlers. Honestly I want the Z due to it's waterproof encasing but it's not sold new up here in Canada.
so my #1 interest is a camera that does not lag and will open quickly.
--> camera itself is the fastest I've seen. First thing you notice is the super smooth and responsive viewfinder.. even in low light. It always feels 60fps. I compared this to HTC ONE and it's a LOT slower..really.
About opening.. opening of the camera app isn't fastest i've seen (can take 3 secs) but because of the dedicated button you can still open it way faster than phones without button.
I also am a fairly heavy user for NUMBER of apps. I have a lot installed and switch between them frequently. I don't play games or watch videos so graphics don't matter much.
--> Ye as with all 2GB phones multitasking is almost instant and apps never really close.
The kicker here is I am REALLY hoping to keep this phone for 2 years at least. Do you think that this phone will last? Keeping in mind I don't care about being behind on new technology.
Then yes. I don't see why this phone wouldn't make it 2 years.
I only care that it can handle my volume of use and won't sputter and choke to a slow after 6 months use like the one I have now.
With 2GB ram it's pretty future proof IMO.
p.s. I saw a review of the camera where the reviewer said that the photos look great on the BRAVIA screen but once on a computer screen are not very good. Has this been your experience? What about printing?
Well, in my opinion, pictures look suberb on the 5" with bravia engine 2..really gives a wow-factor.
When you then watch them on the PC they look kinda normal/bland/boring..so its just the way you look at it
p.p.s. would appreciate comments about how rugged it is also as I work as a nanny with two 24 month old toddlers. Honestly I want the Z due to it's waterproof encasing but it's not sold new up here in Canada.
The back isn't made from glass but very grippy texture. I haven't dropped mine but the phones feels very sturdy and good quality, except for maybe the little flap on the back for sim/SD.
Honestly I think ZL is very underrated and still (even with new models like Z1) ZL is still my favorite.
Thanks for your quick quick reply!! One clarification I have to ask: I understand what you mean about quality depending on the screen. However when you look on your computer do you think the quality fits the price? Let's put this simply: I am tired of my boyfriend's iphone photos looking SOOOO much better than mine. Can I at least compete now? lol

To be honest I really like the camera but the software app just doesn't do it justice. Pictures looked a bit washed out when looked at the computer. You can still install another camera app with less compression effects.
Also, for me the camera opens very quickly, less than 1 second with the latest 267 firmware update.
The phone looks gorgeous with the incredibly small bezel for a 5 inch phone. But if you want an awesome camera phone you really should go with the Galaxy S4. Still the best midrange camera phone I've seen so far is clearly the Nokia Lumia 920 but its a Win8 phone... both phone can be easily unlocked if not offered by Wind and are AWS versions.
Also, lots of people complain about the screen being TFT which is the cheapest technology you can use for a phone nowadays. So the viewing angles aren't good but I personally don't care much. But I think you will notice it right away.
Still, for a lot of other aspects, I prefer the Sony ZL

I just traded it my s3 for an zl very disappointed in camera in dark places there is a ton of noise I have to also take multiple snaps before I can get a shot to have a properly focused pic if I use flash it works fine but using superior auto mode and in a well lit room it still doesn't compare anything to the s3 which had a very quick focus but other then that the phone is well worth it will last you 2 years if you do not abuse it only thing im concerned is the non removable battery... wonder how will it perform in 2 years from now....

Don't use superior auto by default, it adds way too much noise. Try using normal with some basic tweaks, you will see a major difference.
Especially with the latest update.

Well I kind of have the same problem. Own an Optimus 2x and now ordered Zl from an amazon offer (350 euros). I love the white version since - if the black back looks cheap - this is absolutely not the case with the white.
However, I am quite disappointed by the screen. You notice the viewing angles immediately and every time the phone is lying on a table in a darker room, it looks like it is showing a bright Grey picture although background is black. So I wanted to return it.
Then I thought of alternatives, but very successful.. I am looking for a phone with no amoled screen, wo no s4. I really want at least 32gb memory and would be happy if it had a working fm radio like XZL (tried Optimus G and thought that must be a bad joke). The Optimus G was nice, but fm radio crap, and due to non expendable storage, I was really missing USB otg. S4 active would be nice, but no fm radio, feels somehow big and is very overpriced. The new nexus 5 seems to only have 16gb.. LG G2 is very expensive with 32gb. And none of them has a dedicated camera button. So I guess xperia zl is a great package! If only they had included a IPS screen (which can be considered as standard today, even for cheap phones).
Today I looked at the screen in a bright room and then it looked way better than yesterday night when it was dark. So I am thinking of keeping the phone - seems like the package is quite good. Or does anyone of you habe a proposal?

My comments:
The poor viewing angles on the screen aren't as horrible as people make it out to be, the screen is still perfectly good and quite a joy to look at. (plus if you like to be private then it stops people from seeing what you're doing easily)
Picture quality is fine, I have an unlocked bootloader(which I did before TA backups were a thing ;_ and even still everything looks great on the screen. Video quality is pretty good in my opinion. In low light, yes the picture quality does tend to suffer but it's still acceptable for it being a phone, I personally haven't tried tweaking with the settings much besides installing the Z1 camera app port.
If you want to see the quality yourself, here are some photos/videos(mind you the outdoor greenery shots were taken a while ago so the latest updates might have improved things):
http://imgur.com/a/qoqg2#0
http://youtu.be/SXxN14HdeGU
Performance has been pretty good, there are a few things I've noticed which can make it a little laggy, like setting a smaller icon size in Apex and the app Twilight can make scrolling a little laggy, but otherwise performance is snappy.
Something that might be of concern is battery life, due to the non-removeable battery. I can usually get through a day before having to charge. I get about 4-5 hours of video watching, so if I only use the screen for a few hours sporadically(15 minutes here, 15 minutes there) then I can usually push it to 24 hours.
One thing I would really suggest is getting at least a decent screen cover, if not case as well, I have one of those meifeng cases from ebay, it's decent enough quality and it's pretty thin, I don't use it every day though. But the built in screen protector is an absolute lint electromagnet, it's like it's sole purpose was to collect lint, not cool. I picked up a skinomi screen protector, just put it on top of the built in one and it works/looks fine.
One thing I like about the skinomi is that it's slightly soft, so it doesn't scratch easily, but it still a good surface for fingering.
The speaker isn't loud enough to be heard over a concert or some power tools, but if you're just at home or in the car then it's quite adequate, the headphone out is also adequate, though it can be a tad quieter than some might like, depending on headphones used.
The microphones are pretty great, that youtube video? The music in person was ear-screeching, yet somehow the microphones managed to pick everything else up pretty well.
The IR Blaster is fun if you normally use multiple remotes for your home.
I can't really think of anything else at the moment, but feel free to ask and I'll try to answer.
Edit:
Shadowman19: Personally I find the viewing angles acceptable knowing that I'm probably never really going to be looking at my phone from these angles anyways, 99% of the time I'm looking at it is straight on.
Personally I don't own a ZL(I currently own an Ion), but i have seen a couple of Z's(the Z screen is similar to the ZL). Honestly, I don't see the difference when tilting the phone(I can definitely see it on my ion). The poor viewing angle claims are exaggerated.
Is it a pleasure to describe you this super amazing device.
Just few years ago a good virtual headset cost thousand of euro. Now with just 69 euro + a regular 5 inch fullhd smartphone probably you can achieve a better results.
At first thanks to a Samsung stand i discover this new economic way for VR and i was shoked for the Field of View 96 degree and the overall experience.
Samsung gear vr is not still in the market and actually would work just with note 4 so i tried to find an alternative.
At first i bough a really cheap vr headset.A sort of google cardboard made of plastic. And even if it was cheap with a small FOV gave me a pretty good sensation.
But nothing compare with the Samsung vr gear i tried in the mall plus the Color Cross were really unconfortable to wear and to adjust.
I did a great resarch and i find out this Homido ready to be buy with great features.
Design 5/5 Look like a cool snowboards glasses very cool wearable without feel like a nerd
Quality 4/5 Simple but very good material and great optic wich provide you a really immersive feeling with 100 fov basically is the same feeling i had with samsung vr gear.Fully adjustable very easy !!!
Comfort 5/5 If i told you color cross were a pain in the ass for more than 5 minutes Homido seems you can fall sleept with this one no problem even if you have a bige nose.Overall they are just comfort as wearing a snowboard mask...
Service 5/5 I ordered 5 for all my family for 69 each and i get in 5 days saturday and sunday included with no additional charge trought a very fast shipping from China to Florida US
Conclusion:AMAZING product wich work better than i expected.
Amazing for 360 stereoscopic vr video and let
tell you 3D compared with this technology is already the past. Now you feel inside de video. The future vs the past.Even the box is really nice .For sure i will buy more for Christmas if you don't try you can't really undestand the real power of this headset. With S4 best VR i ever tried
Inviato dal mio GT-I9505 con Tapatalk 2
I have went through the same exact experience as you when it comes to the whole VR thing. I have the color cross and imcardboard both foam and card board models. I also had the Oculus rift DK1. The Oculus Rift DK1 was able to show me what the future of vr was going to be like, but I sold it because of the nausea issues caused by bad reoslution and lag.
The color cross kills the bridge of my nose after a couple of minutes and the lenses are barely useable. Also cardboard pressed on your face from the actual cardboard models just kinda sucks. I ordered the Homido a couple of days and have seen very little posts about it. I am glad I found this post as it gives me some confidence that it might actually be useable.
It would be nice to get a decent VR experience in a portable package.
The Homido does not TRULY "fit" devices larger than 5" since the display is cut off all around the device. The view width is only 4.1" so no way a 5" wide display like the Note 4 will truly fit, since a large part of the display is cut off. There are posts and feedback about this and forces you to reduce the image size to not get cut off and this makes the resolution worse with an image already split into two smaller ones.
Very misleading for Homido to say it fits devices larger than 5" and hurts perception of the product. Homido should have made the frame bezel thinner to TRULY fit devices larger than 5" phones.
I;ve been using my Homido also on my Note 4, and i must say its not bad at all.
The one thing that makes me wonder is that movies look kinda bad... and not only SBS, but some good quality 1080p movies. I know that the screen simulation is really big... but still makes me wonder.
Anyone tested gear vr also ? I would love to know if it worths the extra money.
The support and variety of games is wider ofcourse, but anyone really tried both to tell us his opinion ?
Point is a lot of the display is cut off, so the image used to fit is smaller, so not using the optimum pixels for the best picture. Gear VR is better since uses the maximum the display can fit since zero cut off. Homido is a nice designed device constrained by the fact that phones need to be 5" diagonal or less to fully fit the view area.

I was able to find these two articles that talked about their experience watching movies on the Gear VR:
http://www.roadtovr.com/samsung-gear-vr-preview-oculus-cinema-watching-a-2-hour-movie/

I demoed the Gear VR for the S6 at the local Samsung store and it was an unbelievable experience, although I could still see the screen door effect even with the S6's 577 dpi while watching a sample video.

I would love to get the Gear VR, but I don't have a Samsung phone, so now I'm learning towards the Homido; however, after reading your comments about watching movies on the Homido now I'm not so sure anymore. Were you able to improve the movie watching experience on the Homido?
Actually i sold it, was getting a lot of screen cut on my note 4 since Homidos opening aint as big as the note 4 screen.
I believe that the ideal for homido would be a 5" 1080p screen

From what I've read so far, you'd also want an OLED screen. Ideally, it should also have at least 500 dpi.
Hey.
I'm a little late to the party but I have just seen this phone and it looks cool. I have a P9 Lite at the moment and I am not keen on EMUI. I love the look of the mint colour Robin. How is the screen on this thing as I hate washed out IPS screens.
Also important to me is how is development for this phone?
Thanks.

Thanks.

The screen is on par with most LCDs these days, good viewing angles and color saturation. Development is on the rise. At this moment there are a hand full of roms to flash. You should get this phone if you can, as it's still great in 2017.
I've just purchased one from Amazon can't not at £149 new for the spec better than some Umi rubbish in same price range
Looks like its got good rom/development support as well

Its a great phone, and definitley worth the money, but considering your current device it's not much of an upgrade.
Hey guys,
I'm considering the purchase of this cool-looking phone as well and I want to ask about the battery life - is it really that terrible that you have to charge your phone more than once a day (as written in some reviews)? And what about the camera - is it really that bad or it's just a normal mobile average?
I am using nexus4 right now and Robin probably won't be my daily driver, I just want it because of the look but obviously I don't want to waste my money on some ****ty device.
Thanks

I can get through a day without charging with ease. That said. I've never been on stock, I personally didn't like it. Many users complained about performance and battery life on the Stock OS. The camera is pretty 'meh'. Taking pictures can be VERY slow (Use Google Camera or something, Open Camera and the stock camera is supposedly slow) and low light performance is pretty bad. During the day though I can get pretty nice shots, nothing to complain about, it's good just not 'great'.
All this said though, I've mostly been on OmniROM and LOS/LOS based roms as they seem pretty on par in both areas (LOS and LOS based roms have a few kinks to sort out at the moment though). If you're planning on sticking with the Stock ROM and have issues, I 100% recommend OmniROM, it's had a long while to get rid of all the bugs and it's got killer performance and with moderate usage (Including some light gaming) I get around 4.5 hours SOT on a single charge on Omni.
I hope this helps
If I leave the house with a 100% charge. I can get through the entire day...but when I'm out...I'm not constantly on my phone. I'm a pretty casual user and I've been pretty happy with the device in the 7 months I've been using the phone. The durability of the phone is the only real questionable thing. The plastic feels pretty thin and the edges are pointy. I can't imagine dropping the phone on its edge onto concrete. I've seen lots of people complain of the phone getting bent from being in your pocket. If you're the type of person that is rough with your stuff...it may not be the best choice....or use a heavy duty case like the Tudia.
Nextbit will also be stopping any kind of warranty in July of 2017. So if you buy your phone now...and something goes wrong...you don't have a warranty after July.
I think at its current price level this phone makes a great backup phone, or if you want to have something for a few months and move on to something better.
The good: it has a rather up to date OS, you get a good processor (808) for around $120, it's light weight and sleek, easy to root and develop on, sleek look, smooth performance with virtually no bloat, supports band 12 (important for t mobile).
The bad: no warranty after July 2017, the online storage space may disappear in 2018 (which was their whole selling point for the phone on the beginning), mediocre camera, very fragile design ( the phone is made entirely of plastic and there is no metal frame inside so forget about putting it in your pocket), no charger in the box, can feel warm at times if you are not careful about background processes and using an ad blocker, mediocre battery life (5 hours on screen surfing).
Great phone. The online storage was dumb and you wont miss it. If you really needed more then 32 gigs would you be looking at this phone at all?
The camera is just ok. Its better then the last phone I had which was a nexus 5.
The phone is good quality. The plastic takes a beating. I put it in my pocket, and run it case free and have for months. Barley a knick on it. Been dropped from waist high on wood floors and tile.
Battery - I stream google music all day at work . If I don't charge I can go about 8 hours with Bluetooth headphones connected. If I use it as a phone for googling here and there I get like a day+ on it. Reading books and wut not, 12 hours.
I run stock, with a personalized launcher, rooted, running substratum for blacking out all the menus and Nougat quick settings to use immersive mode. Runs like a champ, super fast. The warranty thingie sucks, but;at 117 bux, this phone is a steal.
I dare anyone to find a brand new phone with at least an 808 and 32 gigs of storage, with 3g memory for cheaper and better support.
I'll wait right here. :silly:
Hello Community!
I consider buying the Nextbit Robin for my 13yo son, who killed his S5 Neo (broken Display). I´m afraid he would be forced to stick with stock and no root because of....well.....pokemon go.... so I hope battery life is not THAT bad as complained in some threads.
BUT: The fact that he killed his last phone because he dropped it and the "bending issue" I read in this thread I am pretty unsure about it. My son puts his mobile into his pocket.

Pokemon GO works fine with custom ROMs and root as long as you use magisk
I got one and I love it , it has an amazing camera, great battery life (at least on Resurrection Remix), and is nice because the bootloader is easily unlockable. The only issue I have experienced is the speakers can be a bit distorted at max volume.
