Xiaomi Piston 2- In-Ear-Headphone v2.1-Updated edition 2014
Well after Xiaomi Piston Earbuds won IF Design Award 2014 in Germany and coming up with the latest Xiaomi Piston v2.1 edition or the old v2 which got hyped as the v2.1,after it grabbed all attention and for its price to performance ratio, I decided to get one myself so ordered it from ali express at a discounted price of 19.2$ as it was on sale when I made my purchase and it took only 16 days to reach me in Delhi, now moving on with the review.
Box and Packaging
These in ear Xiaomi headphones comes in a brown color art paper wrapped, with brief instructions to remove the earphone from the rubber carry case and compatibility explained on the paperpack itself. At the back of the packaging detail are imprinted and on scanning the bar code at the back you will come to know the import date/or maybe the date of manufacture which for me was 09/05/2014 as shown in picture. At the bottom of the paperpack there is a QR code which leads to downloading a music app which I believe was of no use as it was completely in Chinese so could not get any details on it.
On removing the the paperpack you will find a transparent case and a beauty, gold version of the piston2.1 visible through the transparent case all set to unfold. On opening the case though I was expecting a chocolate smell but it was not there in this 2.1 (Hongkong version) though I made up for that with a Bournville chocolate alongside.
It even provides a carry case kind of stuff made of rubber which seems to hold the headset quite safe actually the headset comes wrapped on the same dark chocolate color rubber case.

Design & Build
The first thing you would notice about the entire earphones is the Kevlar braided cords with y shaped split. The cord is Pull-resistant Kevlar tough. Xiaomi’s claim that these are tangle-free cables, which holds true as the braided part of the cable rarely tangled up when use.
Under the rubber housing in the carrying case, you will find three sets of different sized silicone ear buds small, medium and large with imprints of S,M,L writing inside the box that you can switch to suit your need. Xiaomi also included a holding metal clip to prevent the cords from swaying everywhere while moving so you can fix it up with your shirt and be tension free.
Audio Quality
These v2.1 piston impedance is 16 ohms -- how this helps
Headphone impedance is usually increased by thinner wire and most importantly more turns of wire in the voice coil. More turns or loops creates a larger field (area of magnetic influence). In layman's terms more magnetic force for the coil to move the diaphragm. Thinner wire usually works out to a lighter, more responsive diaphragm. Depending on the headphone design, this may lead to more accurate response.
The android in-line remote buttons works great with the Nexus5, the vol up and down and in call button, play/pause/call with a single click works fine, double press to load up music app, long press to access google now. The voice quality over the headphone very crisp and clear. Since Xiaomi had made this headset for the Mi phone range which happens to be an android phone so most probably it will work with other android phones too out of the box.
It comes with Beryllium Alloy Diaphragm helping in Boosting the Sound Performance and Stabilizing High and Low Frequency Effects. It reproduce great bass and a high treble performance and for the amount it’s a steal. Beryllium alloys are expensive, high processing difficulty, in the past only used in the world's top audio equipment. Now came a new version of millet piston headphones with the same. The 3.5mm metallic gold plated plug helps in restoring more realistic sound.
Noise Isolation
Well these piston quite shock me when it comes to noise isolation as it isolate you from ambient noise. The noise isolation usually isn’t a lot, but enough to muffle the surrounding sound and with the right combination of the ear buds it will certainly give you great results.
Since, they are still in burning period so a lot more is expected as just spent few hours of test with the Xiaomi Piston2.1 and configuring it with viper4android has boosted the sound even more, though the right tuning is still due to be found but trust me these piston will simply blow your mind with great bass and for me it happened to be the best in-ear-headphone till date as I never ever wanted to spend huge on a headphone but at this price it's a product to bag in.
Here is my review ratings based on the above please share your ratings too if you own a piston along nexus 5.
Voice/Mic Quality 4.5/5
Sound Quality 5/5(considering the price factor)
Comfort 4/5

UPDATE FOR INDIAN BUYERS FROM FLIPKART
Just received the delivery from flipkart and on close comparison with the piston2 --updated version from aliexpress this is what my findings are
* Well the packaging difference was just on the part of the color as flipkart has the white packaging and the other one from aliexpress was in brown though the instruction printed inside the outside paperpack was identical just the language difference one was in chinese and other in English.
*The rubber case on both seemed pretty identical though the flipkart brown case was a bit darker than the aliexpress case but ignorable.
*Coming to the Piston visually they looked same in all aspects except few which was that the piston from flipkart was a bit champagne gold tone while the aliexpress stuff was pure gold and the Kevlar braided cords on the flipkart version did not felt that smooth and a bit thicker than the aliexpress stuff. So,after going through all inspection from visual end the main testing came in and guess what the Piston from Flipkart does not sound that great as the aliexpress one.
* The kevlar cord did not had any QR code to scan on the Piston from flipkart.
The BASS was not full and punchy comparing it with the Piston delivered from aliexpress.
The treble was a bit high on the Piston from flipkart and to me it sound a bit weird as it loose the effect of bass, so the right balance was not there with the bass and treble.
However if I am to assume people who got the piston from flipkart may not agree to my saying but when it comes to real comparision one on one with the piston from flipkart and aliexpress, the later performed much better and real.
Note: All testing was done at equal volume and same settings, as I listened to few electro and some bollywood numbers. So, coming to the conclusion though the flipkart piston has not gone through the burn in period but still it fails when compared to piston from aliexpress as they sound better even when I first plug them in and till now hardly had burn in that much ,maybe 2 hours till now from the date received.
Here are some pictures in comparison and yes the piston from flipkart do come with S/M/L label on box and L/R marking on the headset along with clip but it was quite diffrent from marking on the piston from aliexpress, as almost all reviews and pictures I have seen over the net L/R marking on Piston from aliexpress matches with others shown online as it is in bit orange marking but on the flipkart the marking was embossed on the black rubber itself and now to the most shocking thing was the placing of the hole found under the ear-tip of the headphones see pictures for details.
Conclusion: I find the imported version to be better than the flipkart stuff

These are original piston v2.
There are only 3 versions of these headphones, not HK or China or India or whatever.
1. First edition
2. Second edition, v2
3. IF comemorative edition, that was issued in only 500 pairs of headphones and are out of stock everywhere
Why are yours fake?
1. They have a more silver color than a gold one, but this could be due to a bad camera
2. I wouldn't say the inside of the package smells like a chocolate per-say, but it really comes close to the way the chocolate smell
3. On the photo with the paperbox, on the center of the inside, there should have been just 1 big picture, and not 4 small ones.
4. The code on the box, in lower right: "GB/T smth" it should have been "EN smth"
5. The "1" from "1moredesign" should have had a totally different font.
So, bad news, but you got screwed on aliexpress. Don't worry, you are not the first neither the last one getting fake items from aliexpress.
L. E. So please, delete all the pictures before someone believes these are originals.
@shhbz check for the metal clip and S/M/L printed on the case and R/L on the earphones when you receive it from flipkart and please report back.

well you are right on the part indeed it comes it three version but what I meant was it was imported from hongkong and it was missing the choclate smell and I did not wanted to go deep into the smell though the rubber case did smell but indeed it was not that choclate though.
seems you need to do your findings right first of all its the v2.1 and not the v2 which your reply seems to be on v2
Why are yours fake?
1. They have a more silver color than a gold one, but this could be due to a bad camera----well its my camera indeed and low light pictures taken at night
2. I wouldn't say the inside of the package smells like a chocolate per-say, but it really comes close to the way the chocolate smell--- so dont want to get into this smell thisng
3. On the photo with the paperbox, on the center of the inside, there should have been just 1 big picture, and not 4 small ones. ----thats the details for v2 but not for v2.1 better search the net and find out more on v2.1 instead bagging on v2 details
4. The code on the box, in lower right: "GB/T smth" it should have been "EN smth" --- again EN smth is printed on v2 and GB/T on the v2.1 piston
5. The "1" from "1moredesign" should have had a totally different font.---well God knows which font
So, I believe you should go and get much more info on the v2.1 piston rather then claiming to be the smart guy and hijacking the thread ,If it would have been fake it would not have been uploaded here with such details just to make sure people get the v2.1 the better side has been shown neither a guy like you who consider the v2 to be the v2.1.
you see knowledge is good but half knowledge is very dangerous
thanks for your comments I really appreciate :good: and indeed if you need one v2.1 go to the same seller I bought from and do check his feedback too as he has 97.4% positive feedback

does your case have a metal clip with S/M/L printed on case and R/L on the earphones?
Man, you need to understand that xiaomi v2.1 does NOT exist, xiaomi never put out a 2.1 model, just a 2.0. All over the Internet (the official sources, not aliexpress), you will see "xiaomi piston 2nd edition". So yours ARE fakes! Search on xiaomi site or ibuygou, pandawill, merimobiles, sites that sell genuine xiaomi products, and see if you can find a 2.1 version.

well xiaomi did updated the old piston 2 in the year 2014 and maybe people have hyped about it as v2.1 but yes it indeed a new verison with few branding change on box and extra clip and stuff and a better drivers and even the seller has made their sale as piston2 but you see people around here in order to get the new version want some details on the 2014 packaging and since most familiar with the name v2.1 updated piston so I will end this discussion here, so if you consider mine to be fake, I am happy for you end of discussion now its time for some bass on my v2.1 Piston

indeed you got a genuine one as seen here http://www.lowyat.net/2014/08/review-xiaomi-piston-earphones-2-0-as-good-as-gold/
Hey there guys.
I'm looking to buy the One Plus 3 soon and I've spent a stupid amount of time trying to figure out which color looks better as I seem to love both.
I've seen many youtube videos and pictures and the Gold looks silver in a lot of them.
It's as if in one place the pictures the gold version looks yellow and another place it looks silver all dependent on the lighting.
I would like for people to post their opinions and see which one is more popular etc.
I bought the graphite, because it was released earlier, and looks better with cases, but i like the gold one too.
Graphite the bezels stand out to much in the gold!.
Ordered gold but had to cancel it. The front white color just don't suits me well. So, i bought the graphite instead.
I noticed that the back changes color too when viewed on different lighting.
I liked the sandstone on the op1 and 2. Wish they had it for op3. Graphite is the closest, so my opinion sways for that one. Quite honestly though, my preference for any phone is straight up black.
Sent from the OnePlus 3...
making it "RAIN!"
I have the soft gold version of the Oneplus 3 and i absolutelly love it!
The bezels do not stand out at all they are barely visible and the back is amazing.
The only downside with this color is the white front, but the more I use it the more i like it.
I got rid of my Note 10 Plus in the Aura Black after seeing the Aura Blue Note 10 Plus. The Aura Blue is one of the best colors I've ever seen. As soon as I saw it I knew instantly what it would look like and I would do. Finally picked up the Aura Blue and I already had what I was going to use with it. I'm a huge Marvel Cap America fan which was my first thought after I envisioned the look I wanted. Here are a couple pics of my Captain America Note 10 Plus

It is a awesome blue color. The blue blue S Pen with the aura blue is a little different than the aura glow blue s Pen. The aura blues blue s Pen is entirely blue push button clicker and all where the aura glow blue s Pen has a silver push button clicker. That's why I want the red note 10 6.3 inch now because my blue push button clicker is blue and the frame of the red note 10 is red so the contrast would pop or stand out like it does on my aura blue with red s Pen. I'll attach a picture. Look at the end of the s Pen. My blue is all one color but the aura glow has a silver end to match the silver frame.
Another couple of pictures I took today with my new new little known flagship, not killer but a full blown flagship that most call mid range but it has no weakness much like the Note 9 and does everything as one of the best but so happens Asus priced it at a price so unheard of for a full flagship that its preferred to as a mid range device often. Only its price suggests mid range. If you handled one knowing the exact flagship specs, they and OnePlus cleary prove that the $1000+ priced flagships are overpriced by around 200 dollars. Anyways I took the picture with the Asus Zenfone 6z
Great photos , what camera was used ?
What color did you get or do you plan on getting?
I ended up with the black but I was really debating on the gray. It was really hard to tell what the gray really looked like in all of the pictures. The lighting always made it look different.
I was pretty disappointed in the color options this year. How do you feel about it?
Got the grey
Got black and I am also disappointed with the color options. I even asked Samsung if I can get the bundled Buds+ in black but they only ship white, ehkem with a 1349€ phone... Nevertheless I got into some discussion with their support and they gave me two additional wireless chargers that cost 60€ each.
I never really understood why there is mostly such a trend that top phones get less color options. Note 10 was banging and S20U is like duuuuuh... Maybe they thought that everyone will use a case because of that camera bump but it is not a good argumentation though.
Grey cuz black is kinda boring. I bet they’ll come out with another color in a few months.
Cosmic Gray
I'm not going to limit the phone I wanted to get due to a cir preference so obviously I got the only color available which was black. Stupid how they do that but whatever. Provided it was an option I would've gotten gray.
Like most people have already stated, colors were boring this year. Black was unoriginal, grey seemed too basic. I chose black.
Black, because only Black was 512GB.

Interesting. In Canada, only the Grey is 512GB.
In the UK only Grey is 512GB Ultra
And its exactly what I ordered ?
Black, because that was the only option for 512GB. I wanted the Grey.
Samsung, you disappoint with the color options as usual. I wanted a white Note 10+, had to get black. At least do ceramic or something like you did with the S10+ 1Tb, that was cool for the crazy price we are paying
Black 512 for me too, I always regretted not getting the s7 in the shiny silver colour, I wouldn't mind seeing that again.

I appreciate that I couldn't get grey in 512, made me realize I upgrade so much that getting the 512 in black isn't very smart since generally it will be worth about the same as the 128 when I upgrade.
I can understand why it would be less than ideal for others, but for me it worked out
Black because I haven't had it since the S2
Ordered black as it hides the camera bump best
Got Black. Thought everyone will go for grey. I might stand out. Also black is the only model with 512Gb
yeah I ordered the Black 512gb and I actually held the S20 ultra black today at best buy, and I`m glad I ordered the black one it looks lot better with the bigger camera bump, and doesn`t stand out like it does on the grey.

Hi guys;
I'm gonna stick with Panda (Cloudy White),
Which color would you choose?
Thanks.
Edit: It took me about 45 minutes but I finally placed a Pre Order for a Pixel 6 Pro 128GB in Cloudy White and I get a pair of Pixel Buds A for free!
Stormy black for me. I'm gonna have a case on it anyways so colors don't really matter a whole lot. I like some of the regular P6 colors better but I gotta get that Pro.
Usually black since I'll also have a case on it...
Black is too plain. Sorta sunny isn't very masculine lol. White it is.
It's the between the sunny and black for me
Sorta Sunny or White. I would love the coral, but not to be on the Pro.

There is no Panda. What you are refering to is an abomination between milkish lightgrey and a darker shade of grey at top. There is no white to be found, nor black.
The three color combinations this year? It's the choice between lame, mediocre and meh.
Probably going with mediocre.
The colors this year.. dull, strange, sad.
I want my true black and white panda back
Not this greyish monstrosity.
At least I expected them to give us an evenly black colored phone. As the most basic and simplest of all. Instead we now have a darkgrey with a lightgrey topping, and they even have the balls to call it "stormy black" - even though there is no black anywhere to be found.
I suggest Google moves back to the color palette and starts simple. Obviously they have lost their way.
Looks like there's no 256 or 512gb options available.

Quick question. This is the first time I have bought a new phone right at launch or even within like 6 months of launch since the Nexus 6. How soon does it take for the dev community to confirm bootloader unlock and root? P.S. I didn't mean to post this in the Colors thread - LOL.

It seems to be fairly quick for prior Pixel's... But this one is unknown since Google is ditching Qualcomm for its own Google Tensor chip...
I got the Stormy Black. I had my heart set on the white version, but the polished chrome frame makes me want to gag. I find that a black frame is less distracting while looking at the screen. I figure I'll just slap a dBrand skin on it, and have a "Sorta Stormy White" with a black frame. If I ever crack the back glass, I'll be replacing it with the Stormy White version though.
My absolute favorite color was the "Sorta Seafoam" from the regular 6. The matte finish frame and the colors really work well together, but I wanted all the 6 Pro goodies.

My absolute favorite color was the "Sorta Seafoam" from the regular 6. The matte finish frame and the colors really work well together, but I wanted all the 6 Pro goodies.

Same for me. I liked the back colors of the yellow pro and ordered one. The gold metal frame bothered me to the point that I canceled it and ordered a black pro. I lost a week in delivery time but that's ok. A dbrand skin will look good on that black pro. I had one on my 4a and my 4a 5G. They give it a great look and a textured feel.
