Device slightly "choppy" after January Update? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi there,
after flashing the most recent OTA Update, my device seems a little choppy here and there, scrolling isn't as smooth as it used to be. It is a very minor difference, but recognizable. My brother's experience is about the same after installing the latest update. It is no game breaker, but I loved the buttery smooth scrolling from before.
Does anybody else experience a slight drop in smoothness after the update?

That's a known issue with the full OTA package. Just reboot and all will be fine.

Already tried that, the slight drop in smoothness persists. I think I'll try a full wipe tomorrow.

Try lowering Animations Scale in Developers Settings to .5x

I fastbooted the factory image without the -w and it was indeed very choppy. Now, this was a problem that Google addressed and said that rebooting would fix it. Rebooting did speed it back up, but after a short period of time, a day I think, I my phone became noticeable slower. Although I did not notice a drop in scrolling smoothness, There would be a clear delay from the time I pressed the home button to when the animation of the app closing began. I wasn't too sure what was going on, and was desperately hoping that this was not happening because of prolonged use. I personally think Google somehow messed up and made it so that sideloading either the ota or factory images slowed the device down. There is no way a pixel would begin to slow down that much after such a short period of time (I think I wiped my phone about a month before I flashed the January image). I thought it could've been the January image itself causing the slowdowns, so I flashed back to December security patch and took the OTA and it was smooth like normal. I have not used the January image long enough to determine if Google messed something up with sideloading or whether the slowdowns just came with prolonged use.
I apologize for the essay, but I just wanted to share my experience. Hope this helps!

Android 7.0 scrolling lag/choppiness and Android system and OS battery drain

A few hours after flashing the factory image, my 5x has been scrolling really choppily, it's not as noticeable when I fling the scrolling ( take my finger off the screen after flinging the scrolling direction) but it's extremely noticeable when I'm scrolling while keeping my finger on the screen. I'm not quite sure if this choppiness only affects scrolling, it could possibly be a frame cap, but I haven't really noticed any lag or choppiness when opening apps. I think this could also be due to the system optimizating the apps in the background since android system and Android OS have pretty high battery usage percentages, and I've been having worse battery life than I had when my 5x was on marshmallow. The phone gets woken up a lot when it's idle. I've reflashed the factory image again and once again for the first few hours the phone is fine and then after that the scrolling choppiness returns and the Android system and Android OS battery drain too. I'll probably roll back to marshmallow if these problems don't get better in a few days after the system is done optimizating the apps in the background. I just wanted to know if anyone else has been having these issues and if anyone has a way to make the scrolling smooth again (once again the scrolling is smooth for a few seconds after rebooting and then the choppiness comes back once again) thanks in advance.
I'm getting same issues Im most likely going back to MM until next Nougat revision is issued

Yea, I also went back to marshmallow because I couldn't stand the scrolling choppiness and the battery life issues. I really did want to wait a few days to see if it made a difference but it felt like the choppiness wasn't just affecting the scrolling it felt like the phone was being frame capped. And the battery life just seemed to get worse and worse so the problems didn't seem to flatten themselves out. However I did read some posts on reddit that suggested the problems being caused webview being integrated into only chrome instead of being a standalone app; the post suggested uninstalling chrome and updating webview. For me it didn't really help with the battery issues and scrolling issues but others can try and see it helps with their phones.
Why are you reflashing the stock image? Try factory resetting or format data/cache in recovery, then just take the OTA.

I reflashed the stock image via the flash-all.bat file so it wipe the entire phone including the data and cache partitions. But even after that the scrolling choppiness and battery issues come back after a few hours.

I'm wondering if the stock image or the flashing process is the issue. I would try reverting back to MM and take the Nougat OTA update, and then format data/cache.
I dont get this issues.
But ive installed tupiac4u Custom Rom.
new on N5x, bought the day 7.1.1 came out.
I never tried 6.0 but 7.1.1 (only thing I tried, why downgrade?) is far from being smooth
I'm trying kernels, roms, aosp, cm, stock based, anyhting I do doesn't help. it's not smooth
I have 3 friends with unrooted phone, who just updated to 7.1.1 through OTA and is smooth as should be....curious....
well, I tried 6.0 and is not any good
updated to 7.1.1...not solved
done again factory reset with flash-all.bat to 7.1.1 and is still not perfect...
I tried a friend's unit, is damn smooth, really, 60fps always, scrolling is so good...
I really don't know how to solve this. custom kernels are faster but not smoother....
wish I could get it replaced

Definitely get it replaced, sounds like bunk hardware. Maybe a faulty CPU/GPU.

I can't...what should I say? the device works, everything run fine. no hardware fault...just a unfortunate unit, but is not enough to get it replaced
I just was having all these issues and Google is replacing my phone after going through all the troubleshooting with them.
If you guys go to the sound menu in the actual settings menu, does your volume jump around at all? I discovered this on the phone and I'm wondering if this is some weird issue separate form these problems or part of a bigger problem with this image.

Random Freezing and Crashing

Hey guys, i love my pixel 3 XL its been great but it has been randomly freezing and locking up, somtimes requiring a restart.
Other time i get the system UI crashed message and then i close it and it works again. Sometimes Chrome or the camera app locks up and crashes too.
Anybody experiencing this? Any ideas on a fix, maybe the next December OTA will fix it hopefully.
Thanks

I'm getting pretty fed up of factory resetting my phone, the phone started saying it's corrupt so I ended up reflashing it and that issue is now gone, but this freezing issue happens every now and then. You really think a factory reset is worth trying? Or could have something of gone wrong with the reflash?

I absolutely would try a factory reset if things are acting strange for no apparent reason.

If you flashed the factory image it's either a hardware or app issue. Have you tried using the phone for awhile with a minimum of apps? I'd give that a try I don't think a factory reset will do anything if you've already flashed the factory image.

try the flash-all.bat then when its complete go to stock recovery and format /data
are you using substratum?
Pixel 3 XL crashing
I have had the same problem. My system UI crashes since new, along with other apps and the phone becomes non-responsive. I thought it was just a new phone glitch that would be fixed with an update, no such luck... I need to do a hard reboot by holding the power button until it reboots. I bought a Pixel 2 XL in August and never had any problems like this. I finally contacted Google about the problems and they RMA'd it. I never root my phones before making sure they work correctly, so this one is and has been stock, unrooted.
My wife and I have the 64GB models in Black (mine), White (hers). She's on her 3rd replacement phone for what seems to be a similar issue.
Symptoms:
When using the fingerprint reader to unlock the phone, it may not unlock for 10+ tries.
The phone's battery drains quickly, within a couple hours of barely any use, her phone might be down to 60-70%
System_UI crashes
Some apps don't seem to load quickly (Like going into messages, you see the app container, and a new chat button, but no messages load for a minute). Or she's had a straight up black screen, and the app wouldn't load.
Takes minutes to call or hang up a call and often takes rebooting to close out the phone app.
It almost seems like something is running in the background that is utilizing the CPU and causing the lag/app/battery issues.
Troubleshooting:
Factory Reset
Wiping Dalvik Cache
Replacing the phone twice through Verizon. The first replacement had the same issues immediately. The 2nd phone showed the same issues immediately, and then went away for 3 weeks since the Dec. 5th Security update, but in the past few days has returned.
Booted in Safe Mode (everything seems to be working fine however extremely limited).
We've also checked the processes and no apps seem to be running that would make any sort of impact.

Since the December update, the freezing issues I was having have been significantly reduced, but it still freezes sometimes... I am hoping the January update coming in the next week will smooth out any remaining bugs.
Any of you using a different launcher?
I had this freezing and non-responsive issue. The google rep, replaced it, he determined it is some kind of hardware issue. My replacement didn't have this issue at all (November update). However, the lag/stuttering still persists though. I had replaced quiet a few pixel 3 XL, and i am just getting tired of it. For a $1K phone, we shouldn't get mediocre quality of phone.
So my wife had been removing applications in small groups to try to narrow it down. It seemed for a week or so that she was in the clear and everything was working. Then all of a sudden she got the January update and her phone is still having issues.
Slow responding finger print reader.
System UI crashes
Unable to answer phone calls despite numerous attempts.
It still seems like there is something that is running in the background that is just using the processing power.

Get gsam from the app store, if you don't have it. After awhile see what apps are using battery, app sucker in the app. Gsam is a battery monitor.

Sadly, gsam and accubattery don't show anything out of the norm app wise.

Smoother digitizer (scrolling) on Android 9?

When I got my 5T one year ago, I noticed that the scrolling was a bit jittery while I touched the screen. Any scrolling that happened when I wasn't touching the screen was smooth so I figured it had to do with the digitizer. I read some thread about it but never found a solution, and I finally accepted the fact that this phone didn't feel as smooth as my Nexus 6 did on this regard.
However, after the Android Pie update, the scrolling is now much smoother. There's barely any noticeable difference between scrolling with my finger in Chrome and scrolling that happens without interaction (like when I push away a page and let it scroll by itself).
Am I the only one experiencing this? Maybe I'm extra sensitive to these things, or perhaps my phone had some weird bug that finally got overwritten with the OS update - I never tried factory resetting my device.

Phone stuttering and lagging more each day

Anyone also experiencing same issues? After the PIE update months ago, everything began going downwards. Scrolling sometimes getting laggy or sticky (like pulling a gum from the ground), stuttering on some apps like chrome etc. Should i go back to Oreo? For me personally seems like this whole PIE thing was just a half-assed rebranded thing for OP5/5T originally meant to be devices like OP6/6T they just released half-assed update to satisfy people asking for pie update.

You're not alone.
I noticed this straight away when I "upgraded" to pie. Very noticeable when scrolling. If you leave the phone idle for a couple seconds (around more than 20-30 seconds), then scroll again, there's a very noticeable lag.
Another user on reddit managed to capture the issue
Unfortunately there's no fix. I wiped the cache and then factory reset. Still had the issue.
I ended up just going back to Oreo, which I recommend you do if you want smooth performance again.

Same problem here, no one want to help us. Like problem did not exist
I started having this problem since going to Pie, but the phone only stutters randomly about once or twice a day for me. A temporary solution for my phone is that whenever it lags, I press the power button to lock the phone. After unlocking, the stutters go away. Let me know if it works for you.

One ui 2.5 update is garbage

Just got the new update today morning, it's been a lag fest since then, one to two second pauses when opening apps, pauses when pressing any of the nav buttons, horrible battery drain. It's 2pm now and Im down to 15% already.
First screen shot is from today, second is from yesterday's usage.
Already cleared cache, made no difference.
Which app it is? Your screenshot?
Exactly what I wanted to know as well.

Regarding the topic, for me, personally, this update has been quite good. Everything runs well and I like the small visual clues and changes.

Lucky you, this is the first time an update screwed up my phone. I'll probably have to wipe the phone.
Hey , my phone has been the same, lag and stutters while scrolling and opening apps and stuff. I've cleared cache multiple times , didn't worked. You need to factory reset, it works so smooth now.
Update running great for me, I did optimize apps right after via galaxy labs however.
No lag, battery the same as it was before.
Same here....I will pass update.
My S20+ after update: battery drain, laggy scroll, laggy opening apps....
I tried all day trying to fix it but nothing....I booted in safe mode and not lucky so it is not and installed app.
I tried wipe cache...I tried disable multiple services, wipe cache and data from touch wiz, etc....nothing works.
Phone is totally useless after updated with lag and battery drain...and runs very hot
That updated is a Russian Roulette....beware!!
I will try to flash a clean rom using odin and restore apps.

my opinion , after every big update , device need factory reset and install everything from 0.
that what i did with my s20 ultra after one ui 2.5 update
Sent from my SM-G988B using Tapatalk
S20 SD. No problem with the update.
Had the same issue as you. If you're using package disabler, enable all pkgs, clear the cache, restart, and then redisable. Worked for me
I had the same problem but in my case I got it fixed after enabling IMS with Package Disabler because I had these disabled without issues before the update.
After enabling this my S20 Ultra runs good again, so if you have package disabler installed start looking into that.
So definitely no need to reset like others say lol, it is no new Android so why would you just a conflicting going on
Btw I install updates always with first enabling everything and update all disabled ans then installing updates.
After update, running galaxy labs, cache cleaning and then disabling my list with Package Disabler again.
So don't no why IMS packages gave me issues this time....

!!!EXACTLY!!! The same thing is happening to me. Slow fingerprint unlock (its getting stuck sometimes), Slow in opening the apps, navigating back. I clreared the cache but no use. Its dam frustrating, I feel like Im using heavy software on Galaxy S5 phone
The update has been fine for me, T-mobile s20+ SC. Only thing annoying me is that they took away wallpaper scrolling from 3rd party launchers.
Has anyone had issues with automatic wallpaper apps? I use resplash to auto set a wallpaper every 3 hours. It seems everytime overnight it will switch itself to a default Sam wallpaper for no reason.
I received this update few days ago. but I have no issues, I thing even the time of battery is definitely better. software is responding good and fast.
Just two old bugs are still chasing myphone. The edge lightning ( does not work. ex: Messenger APP) and delay on gMails notifications.
My wireless charger stopped working after the update, no other issues.
Everytime my screen turns off my WiFi gets disconnected and then I turn it on and it connects again. Any ideas?
S20+ on VZW. No issues.
Only thing not working is I can no longer expand notifications from Nest, though not sure if that's a Nest problem or on the phone's end.
I feel it's noticely faster on my S20 Ultra (G988B) and battery may be the same or slightly better. Ovrerall, great update especially the DeX and Pro Video recording update.
