'Upgrade' S8 to Pixel 2 now? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Had S8 since launch, so just under a year.
I really want a Pixel for stock Android, and the camera. Not sure if I should do it, or keep the S8 for another 8 months and see what the Pixel 3 is like.
Cons for getting the Pixel are the lack of wireless, headphone jack, Samsung screen and design.
Pros are stock Android, guaranteed, fast updates, better Assistant integration, that camera.
If I get the Pixel, I'd buy on contract. £38 for 2 years, 15GB data, unlimited texts and calls. That's £912.
I bought my S8 outright, and I have a separate plan. So £680 + £15 a month for a year is £860. And that's only for a year, and I get 1000 calls, unlimited texts and 6GB data. So in the long run the Pixel is a cheaper offering (while the offer is on) than me buying my phone's outright.
Is it worth me getting the Pixel or would I just keep a hold of my S8?

No one can answer this for you. Which do you want more? You need to make that decision and then just act on it. There's no right or wrong.

I did it a month ago. It hasn't been one single moment of regret about what I did.
So, the Galaxy 8+ (D855) + QC Samsung wireless Charger (EP-PG850) are on sale now (570 EUR)....
At the end ... I was speaking for myself, so no advice from my side to do it or not.
Holy smoke....I have to modify my sig!

I ditched my s8 plus and am much happier with my pixel 2 xl.
And this is coming from a huge sammy fan.

Did the same! Sold my S8+ and liken my Pixel2 XL!! It's a keeper for me on XDA!

Ah cool there's a few who have done it ha. Do you miss the screen/super slim bezels/wireless charging/headphone jack?
Are you guys gonna keep a hold of it for while? See if I get it I'll be tied in for 2 years. I mean sure I can sell my S8 and put it towards paying it off but dunno.

I plan on holding onto mine for at least the 3 years that Google has guaranteed support for. Since project treble makes it easy to run later builds of AOSP, I imagine there will be tons of community support after that time too. It's the perfect phone in my opinion. My only complaint is that there isn't anything that I want to change. No reason for me to tinker.

Ive never used any of that stuff so i cant miss it.
Hate the stupid curved screens on the Samsung's so dont miss that one bit.
I buy at least 3 devices per year, not sure how long i will keep the pixel. If roms dont start dropping probably not that long. Then again i dont sell all my old stuff so it may hang around for awhile just because i like it alot despite no development

Can not agree more....
My S8+ was a Sammy phone after 4 years. The first thing I discovered was the awful dialer, when installing 40 app, lag showed up, had to do all sort of things to get Adhell running and disable bloatware...literally it was a 2 weeks project to at least satisfy my needs. At the beginning it had a bug in software, so it was barely usable for phone calls almost 2 months.

There's only one thing holding me back from ordering.
One, yeah I'll be committed for two years. Well unless I sell the phone and keep the contract running and then just buy a new phone, and also the fact there's the S9 out in two months and the Pixel 3 in 9.

Agreed.
And also wait to see if the exynos S9 has the same OEM unlock issue as the note 8. That will be a deciding factor for many of us I think.

I love my Pixel 2 XL, the camera + photo and video backup at original size for free for 3 years and you keep whatever you saved after + and updates for 3 years did it for me. The blueish tint on white from the sales doesn't bother. I never look at it from the side lol.
I thought I would miss some features from my Honor 8 or HTC 10 but this stock build is perfect for me. The camera though...... Damn it's nice lol

Chances of Pixel 2 XL selling out?

I don't see any benefit with pre-ordering it as I will be waiting weeks till I actually get my purchase and I can pass on the google home mini so I rather just buy it when it actually releases but I don't want to be in the same situation as others had when the Pixel XL released. So if anyone can help me decide if I should preorder or if I should be good when the Pixel 2 XL actually releases. Im hoping Google learns from their mistakes and makes enough Pixel 2 XLs for everyone:fingers-crossed: also I plan on getting 128gb btw if that helps. Thanks!
If it's been like every other year, you can guarantee it. You can set your watch to it. Ordering problems, whatever you can think of.
It's going to be a cluster ****. So, if you want one, take tomorrow off work and be prepared to get a new F5 key or keyboard.

I m optimistic that this year will be better than last. After at least a couple years now where Google has had a hard time keeping stock, they've hopefully learned their lesson. They dumped a bunch of money into LG's screen division this year, hopefully to help up production. Also, the pixel 2 will have a more typical development window (maybe) than the pixel which went from concept to production in an un characteristically short amount of time. Finally, while LG is no Samsung, I think they are bigger than HTC with greater production capabilities. Hopefully these things add up to a better stock of phones at release. Of course, there are no guarantees.
I've pre-ordered every year and have always had a negative inventory experience! Guess we'll find out soon if this launch is different...
Placed my order for Pixel XL 2 during the show.
Shipment 1 Delivery October 19–October 20
Pixel 2 XL (64 GB, Just Black)
$849.00
Quantity: 1
Its already unavailable!
I ordered mine during the event as well, 2 XL 128GB just black. I was going to go with the 64gb version but looked at my phone and saw I would only have about 20gb left if mine was 64gb (I have a 128gb currently). That is one years worth of use on my Pixel XL and I haven't removed anything from my device. I think I would rather have less than 50% used than more than, so wasted the extra $100.
Pixel 2 128XL Black pre-ordered 11:15pst, Ships around Oct 17...
I'm holding off on buying 2 XL until enough user feedback shows Google solved the LTE cellular data thing.
100% chance. They probably have like 5 in stock right now.
A bit off topic.
Did you guys saw that there were 3 phones on the Google family photos.
And in the live demo the appointment Pixel Ultra.
Maybe the leak last week was true or Google saw it and is making a huge joke.

google screwed up this phone with those bezels so they won't be running out of stock since people are leaning towards the s8+ note 8..
I experienced the same $#!+ show I expected after being a part of the Nexus 5, 6P, and Pixel launch. I tried for hours to get a black and white 2 XL to go through the checkout process. As always, you can thank the garbage people of eBay.

Anyone who thinks S8 is better than Pixel XL is ignorant.
I casually ordered a black XL a while after it went live, had 0 issues and it is suppose to be delivered between Oct 24th and 27th.
Really looking forward to finally having something worth upgrading from my Nexus 6.

Is the Pixel 2 xl worth $900

Ok so most of us has had our pixels for a few weeks now, do you think it's worth $900. Honest answers please.....
Absolutely. It has everything I want in a phone and has the exact form factor I want it in(I hate edge display and am not a fan of bezel-less deisgns from day to day use). I'm getting a minimum of 3 years of OS updates, 3 years of monthly security updates, chat or phone call support, and unlimited full resolution photo uploads. It's going to take something really magical to come out for me to switch to another device. I thought the 6P would fit the bill for a long term device for me, but that S10 was a throttling POS. Thought the original Pixel would have been a long term phone, but I REALLY missed front facing stereo speakers. Any other phones out there will not be supported over 3 years and I refuse to get burned by a company that drops support on their products again. Is this device perfect out of the box.....no. Then again not one phone is. Most of the issues reported are not anything I notice in day to day use or I have remedied myself( for example using the original Pixel cable for Android Auto stopped the crashes). I love it.
The definition of value is what a willing buyer is prepared to pay to a willing seller.
The seller is definitely willing, duh, so... the answer is that it is worth the price to everyone who bought one without being under duress.
Hardware worth the value? Absolutely not,
but Software worth the value, Yes as @AndrasLOHF said. I agree especially with front-facing speaker. Stock, fast, unlockable bootloader, Unlimited photo storage etc. I have one so I can run stock latest android software this year, and the camera.
as a owner, i'd say its overpriced. if you win the screen lottery its overall a great phone, but its hard to justify it in a pure cost comparison to an iphone 8+ or a galaxy s8+. I just happened to like pure android and the developer community of nexus/pixel phones, so thats the only reason i can justify the price, but i wouldn't recommend it to family or friends unless i knew they were android enthusiasts.
Absolutely for me especially with the trade in... which makes it a more reasonable price!
Like front ? ?, Stock, fast, unlockable bootloader, and unlimited photo storage...
Yes, I think it is worth the asking price... For me it's the only natural progression from my 6P (personally, the best phone I've owned) which includes 3 years of updates /upgrades..

Nope, but it's worth $575 which is what I'll cost me after getting $425 back from T-Mobile

Probably not worth $900. None of the phones out are. They all do what your last phone did. Every phone discounts soon after launch. The early adopters pay the high amounts. Samsung BOGO, or savings off the note 8 if you had a note 7. Essential discounted after release. Lg discounted after release. Pixel 2 $375 just to bring it Tmobile. Just wait a month once the phone you want comes out. Tough I know but some of the pixel 2 are already cheaper on swappa then the Google store.
Lucky for me I found a guy selling the pixel 2 xl on craigslist for $700 but I offered him $500 and he text me back a day later asking for $550 ?. Been loving it ever since, currently got my essential phone on eBay and it's up to $450 with a day to go.
Is it worth 900? Everything inside of me says NO however I bought the thing, I love it and I would buy it again if I broke or lost this phone. So I guess money speaks louder than words in this scenario. The software just blows everything else out of the water. Id love to have the Iphone Xs 4k @ 60fps, The LG V30's SD card slot, headphone jack and quad dac but I would still pick the pixel 2 XL over any of those due to the overall experience.
In Switzerland it's 1 109 Dollar, very expensive but i love it so far

+1. That being said, compared to the other phones out there, I don't think $900 is a good value for the phone., especially with all this QC problems As for me, I have this dumb urge to buy the newest tech.
It's not worth its price, and I knew it when I bought it.
I bought it nevertheless, and I'm pretty satisfied. The camera is absolutely great on 8.1 DP2 with HDR+. Magisk also works fine flawlessly.
Everything is smooth and fast, also GPS is working very well. Battery runtime is also great.
The only problem I have is with the BT connection with my car. Media playback doesn't work at all, phone calls work when I switch to airplane mode before turning on BT after starting my car, though.
Overall, I'd buy it again, I assume Google will fix the BT stack eventually.

I think that quality control problems are massively overblown.
Mine, for the record, is flawless. Have NOT done any exchange.
I think that there are two things that are contributing to people's perceptions being skewed on these (which isn't to say that there aren't a few that are genuinely defective).
1) It is a little bit weird when you suddenly find yourself looking through a circular polarization filter. It does cause a slight color shift at hard angles.. but that's the nature of having a circular polarization filter, which is a tradeoff for people who wear polarized glasses so that they can actually see it at all orientations. I suspect that people who do a few trade-ins eventually get used to the effect, which is why their final replacement is probably not as "bad" as the first one. I know that I've gotten so used to it now that I have to intentionally look for it now... oh yeah, that's what it does!
2) The application drawer has a very slight transparency to it. That means that you can see the image behind it very slightly -- and it looks like burn-in.

The BT issues are affecting EVERYTHING running 8.x, and they are quite aware of it, so yeah, I would anticipate that they get sorted out fairly soon. Hopefully.
I picked up a Pixel 2 XL during Verizon's $300 off promotion. I also have a Note 8 to compare it to. I don't think any phone, especially the iPhone X, is worth $900-1000. A more reasonable amount would be $600-700 and payment plans play a big role in the upped prices this year. The OnePlus 5T at $300+ less than other flagships with similar specs, also makes you wonder. The Note 8 does feel more premium than the Pixel 2 XL, but the software experience on the Pixel 2 XL is the best I've ever seen.
A good indication of where thing are heading is that one can get a brand new LG G5 for $230, an S7 for $400, or an S8 for $575. Getting last year's models or waiting until a phone has been out 6 months is especially cost effective.

No.
I did not want a Samsung or LG anymore, I wanted something with good developer support.
So when I changed my contract I could get a new phone. Samsung and LG were out, OnePlus was not available at T-Mobile Germany. The Nokia 8 has a locked bootloader. So the choice was between the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The OnePlus 5T without contract was more expensive than the Pixels with contract.
So I shelled out €400, what else should I have done?

I hope so, so far I haven't managed to get Bluetooth audio playback working in my car.
It's worth the 765 I paid, plus the trade in for my P XL makes it a reasonable enough upgrade at 350.

Will You Get the XL3?

I'm just curious how many of you plan on getting the XL3. I've bought a new flagship every year since 2011 but I'm not really liking the leaks I've seen of the XL3. Perhaps once I see one in person my opinion will change but right now I'm seriously thinking about keeping a phone for 2 years for the first time. I would consider the Note 9, V40, etc. but I'm pretty much sold on the Pixel line and don't really want a third party device. The smaller Pixel 3 looks nice but I don't want a small screen. Even 6in feels small to me these days so I know I wouldn't like anything less than 6.
What are y'alls plan this fall? Please vote in the poll.

Nope. I don't see the need or even want to get a phone yearly anymore. I don't even get people who switch multiple phones within the same year. The differences and advances are so subtle. Waiting every 2 years makes it more worthwhile.

Can't argue with you. It would definitely make a lot more sense to wait 2 years.
No, waiting for the notch fad to die, then I'll get a notchless Pixel 4 XL
And I don't think the new SoCs and features are enough these days to upgrade yearly. The benefits hardly justify spending $1000 (in Canadian Monopoly money) every 12 months
Like OP, I get a new phone every year and that trend will most likely continue when the 3XL releases. I don't mind the notch, so no big deal for me there!
Absolutely
No. To be honest Pixel 3 is more interesting for me. Quite compact, no notch. If it will has good battery and really new features I will think about switching from my 2xl.

Question in regards to which pixel to buy

Due to my situation over the past few years I've been using the Samsung Galaxy Active line, S7 active now actually. So that really put a damper on my rooting and rom flashing which I had been a big part of since the Samsung Galaxy S, Captivate on AT&T. Anyway I'm in a position to be be able to switch to a Pixel in a month or so but I don't know if I should go for the 3xl or save some money and get the 2xl, which seems like it's still quite a solid device. My most important concern is still having plenty of development for the xl2 after the 3 has been out for a while. I'd like wireless charging but not a deal breaker and since I think the camera on my S7 active is adequate I'm sure the camera upgrade between the 2xl and 3xl wouldn't be huge to me. I would greatly appreciate any opinions.
Thanks
If you are running out of money i recommend you pixel 2 xl though pixel 3 xl is worth it ... At any rate you wont regret it both.
Go for the 3 XL, they improved so many things.
Especially the display.
If you don't have a previous pixel device, get the 3XL
Thanks for the replies guys. I'll be financing the phone through Google so the extra 10 bucks a month or so isn't that big of a deal. But getting the cheaper phone would make it easier to upgrade sooner if I could pay it off earlier. I really just want a phone that has a lot of development that I don't have to pay for in full because I don't have that ability. The only thing that's a slight disappointment on both is the battery size. My S7 active has a 4000 mah battery and it's generations behind. I know processors have gotten more efficient and such but still my S7 active is years old and still has one of the largest batteries in any phone.

Yeah, not really an option as my current situation makes where I would need to finance the phone, like through Google. I don't think that is an option with OnePlus. Would like to be wrong though.
I'm very happy with the 2XL, which will get much of the good stuff from the 3 over the coming weeks. If you can get it for a really good saving over the 3, that's the way to go. The 3 is an incremental upgrade.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. It's about $9 more a month to get the 3XL instead of the 2XL. I wish I could go compare the 2 phones side by side though. Every VZW store I've went to in my general area hasn't gotten their display Pixel 3s yet. They have to the phone to sell but none on display.
Thanks for all the replies guys.
Make sure you get the Google edition and NOT the verizon one if you want to get back to ROMing and Rooting. You cannot do these things if you get the vzw one, even if you get it from google.

Question P6P or wait for P7P?

Currently there is a promo that gets me $800 trade value on my S21 Ultra even with cracked screen. Question is, do I wait and let trade value drop for P7P to possibly release this year or make the jump? I'm tired of the Samsung bloat on Android but I keep reading mixed reviews on the P6P.
Any advice would help.
it is only 7 months away. Just wait it out.
There's always another generation coming. The P6P is great, you won't regret it! But you might regret using a cracked phone for another 7 months and losing out on that credit!
Your phone will be worth a heck of a lot less in seven months. If you haven't already, I would see how much you could sell the phone on Swappa for. That's what I did with my wife's and my Note 10+ 512 GB models. Yes, older phone than yours but it was worth much more selling than trading - it just depends. But $800 does sound good to me for yours. I'll never go Samsung again for phones unless they change drastically. Wonderful hardware but terrible software.
We've hardly had any issues at all with our Factory Unlocked Pixel 6 Pro 512 GB models. No fingerprint, signal, or Wi-Fi issues, and it's now been just around four months or a little longer since we got ours.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
I love my Pixel 6 Pro and have had no problems with it. That being said, I expect there will be some lessons learned with the Tensor chip, modem, etc., that I feel the Pixel 7 "should" (hopefully) incorporate those learned lessons and be a really great phone. I would wait, but that's just my personal opinion.
Wait for the 8
I've never had any issues with my pro and I absolutely love this phone. I came from a OnePlus 6T, and before that Nexus 6 (yes I held onto that sucker for that long)
I'd say weigh your options but $800 for a phone with a cracked screen, seems like a no brained if it were me.

If it were me, I'd get the max trade in for the damaged device before it drops (could drop substantially in 7 months), get the P6P now, enjoy it until the 7 comes out, sell the P6P outright or on swappa, enjoy life

That's why I couldn't find it. I only look for unlockable bootloader phones.
just kidding naturally but looking at the promo it's kind of deceiving. You either need to upgrade your plan, add a new line and go on the installment plan. So after 2 years it's not such a great deal.

All bloat you can handle in 10 min with ADB...samsung One UI is atm the best skin out there, they actualy beat google in their own game. Nice lock/good lock got 1000 custom things to do, better than ''naked google''
I'd say do it. Sold my s21 Ultra for 500. Battery life was horrible and Samsung UI isn't the greatest. It's preference though. If you get 800 for a phone with a cracked screen, that's a no brainer.

As a Samsung fanboy for many years., I'd say that their one ui is filled with unnecessary crap. They take their sweet time to release new updates. It'd be great if you could install aosp on their devices though.
