photo resizing problem with android messages - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Recently i found that android messages could not send some photos. The error message was "Message not sent: too large." After doing some "analysis" I found the app was not resizing a photo so it would be small enough for transmission, ie, the photos were resized over 1 megabyte.
After some additional testing, it seemed the problem was happening with photos that had been edited by google photos. Unedited photos were resized properly and were sent without issue.
Next I "uninstalled" the app. This in fact only removes updates. The un-updated app was able to send photos that had been edited in google photos. I then updated the app and the problem returned.
Verizon message+ does not have this problem.
I sent feedback via the Messages app.
I'm running stock android 8.1 (OPM1.171019.013), unlocked pixel 2 xl (bought on google store), on Verizon

So I backed up my messages and then cleared the data. Now it's working. go and Know!

root cause?
having the same issue. did you ever figure out the root cause? tx

How did you back up your data? I only receive the error message about image sizes if the picture is taken in the app but if I go into my gallery and share it from there through Android messages, it works just fine.

[Q] Can't restore Messenger conversations

I've looked everywhere for the solution to this issue but I'm not getting anywhere.
I just did a full wipe and installed slimkat 9.0. Restored all of my apps using Titanium Backup, and all of the apps and their data restored flawlessly. Except Messenger, when I would restore the apps data and go to see a conversation, all of the conversations change order on the screen and it's as if the messages are all being deleted because it keeps on showing the preview for older conversations as the conversation order changes. Then I am left with no conversations whatsoever.
Any help would be appreciated
You mean the sms app? Make sure it's not set to delete messages after a certain limit per thread
I mean the messenger app, the one Google released not too long ago. You can't set the message limit
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Free mobile app
Do the messages show with another sms app?
I'm having this exact same problem on a Droid RAZR HD running CM11. The backup is from the same phone using stock Kitkat 4.4.2. Any help?

[Q] Lollipop: Contact Pictures in 3rd Party Apps Not Showing After Update

I use Textra as my SMS app. On 4.4.4 Kit Kat, my AT&T Note 4 displayed contact pics pulled from Facebook in Textra. Yesterday, I updated, then factory reset the phone, then reinstalled all of my apps. Now Textra will not show any contact pictures, just their initials. The pis do come up in the contacts app and the Messages app.
I know that there was an issue with 3rd party apps having difficulty using facebook photos. But I thought that was an old issue. On Kit Kat, with no root or extra apps, Textra worked fine on my Note 4.
Have I missed a setting somewhere?
Dave
There were some strange problems with contact pictures not syncing on the nexus 5 and 6 on 5.0.1. The 5.1 update fixed these.
Not sure if this is the same problem, but thought i'd mention.
I use Textra as well and my Facebook contact photos show up just fine. You might have to relink your contacts or sync again in the Facebook app
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
FIXED!
I uninstalled Textra; and then reinstalled it. It is now working perfectly with all of the contact pics now showing.
Last night, I set up FB after using Textra. So I guess that was the problem. Good to know in case anyone else runs in to the problem.

Google Mesenger

Can anyone confirm Messenger working on a stock Lollipop ROM? My 851 can take pictures and videos from within the app but always fails when sending. The stock app and Textra work fine but GM is my favorite. I evewn tried installing older versions but still no dice. TIA

On a LG D693, yes, it works.
Have you tried installing the Google Camera app and making it the default camera app? This usually fixes that whole pictures/video crashing thing that happens with GM. Another thing, are you sending videos/photos to the External SD card?
I tried Google Camera which works fine but doesn't fix the Messenger issue. Messenger isn't crashing just won't send any type of attachment, internal to the app or external, it just says re-trying but fails. It will send a regular sms text. And I am using internal storage

Android messages showing blank threads?

So this happened after the app update...wtf is this?
I have this same problem. I've noticed that it happens after I've used the Amazon music app. The only fix I've found was to force stop the Amazon music app and it clears these blank messages. I'm now on Android 8.0.0 and had this issue as well with the latest Android version 7, I was on. I have the Pixel 128gb on Verizon.
Its a problem with android messages
Yeah, I don't think it has anything to do with the Amazon music app running in the background anymore. Previously, when I saw the prompt that Amazon music was running in the background, if I started the messenger app, I got those blank threads and as soon as I force stopped Amazon music, the blank threads disappeared. Now, they stay and just go away on its own. Even with the recent update to messenger 2.5.211, it still does it.
It's definitely an issue with messenger.

Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm having the same issue.
I have this problem also after restoring the sms with the sms backup and restore. Basically the messages are there but I can't see them, only those ghost threads/messages and I cannot scroll down on the message list to see more of them.
same problem. here is what i did.
I downloaded hangouts and manually set it as default app for sms.
Then i opened up hangouts and went through all the threads that messenger wouldnt show.
Then i went back and forced stopped messenger, cleared data, and set it back as default.

Unfortunately the hangouts is not supporting sms anymore and is though unable to be set as a default sms app.

i have no idea why i had typed hangouts, must have been late. i meant to say verizon messages.
I got it working. Just disable the messages app and choose yes when it asks if you want to go back to factory app. Then clear cache and data and enable the app again. Then you can view all the messages. After this updating the app through play store is also safe and the messages remain visible.

Google Photos cannot save changes with Android Q Beta 2 + patch

Help!
I OTA upgraded my unrooted Google Pixel 2 XL with Android Pie to Q Beta 1, Beta 2 and Beta 2 patch. Now my Google Photos seems severely broken (even though I updated it to the latest version available).
When I edit a photo, a toast message tells that the changes could not be saved. The thumbnails shows the unchanged photo and when I open it, it still looks unchanged. But as soon as I start to zoom, the photo switches to the edited version (pretty obvious when changing a photo to b/w). It seems like the cached thumbnail (and small size local cache) stays unchanged.
I assumed a permission issue and tried several things: Revoking and re-granting all permissions for both Google Photos and Google Camera, granting permissions via adb but still no lock.
I forced closed Google Photos, deleted the complete data and synced anew. As soon as all photos have been retrieved from the cloud, Photos tells me to have several hundred changes to upload. Cannot be. I forced closed again, cleared the data, cleared the local photos folder and started anew. The same thing happened again. Buzzer. Before factory resetting the whole phone, I did a last try:
I switched scope storage off with adb and started Google Photos over again after having deleted everything once more. This time, Google Photos retrieved all Photos fine without wanting to upload anything after this.
So obviously, it was an issue releated to scoped storage.
But even now, editing photos still do not show the edited version in thumbnail view. I am rather desperate and thinking about factory resetting my phone. What keeps me from doing it, is that I fear the same behaviour might occur again since it is due to the Q Beta 2 + patch.
Any clues, hints tipps, whatever? This would be highly appreciated!
Thx, Andreas
I have just noticed that the changes are not submitted to the cloud. Even worse: They are treated as a copy, meaning that the original file is lost. The permissions seem to be messed up pretty badly.
I updated my pixel to beta 2 update with latest patch still having same problem , some bank apps I use don't work now too frustrating, Camera is lagging
same problem here, I return to stable one
deleted
I tried the instructions I gave and they didn't work
Just for update: Works flawlessly now with Beta 3
