Hi, I installed an "OTA" security update this morning on my "addison" and now I can't get the device to boot back into the system? I have an unlocked bootloader, rooted w/ Shamu's Stock Rom, Magisk installed as well and was just fine until the update I did. I've reset , attempted "restore(s)" from 2 different backups even tried to start "fresh" with other "roms" whatever I do it just boots me back into TWRP (3.2.1.0) no errors with either the "restores" or "new" roms? What can I do here? Is this a "bootloop" or "brick" help!

All types of issues you have... never ever take an OTA on anything but pure stock and never if you have a custom recovery... Lesson 1 Over.
Lesson 2 now, I suggest you find the full stock restore image and do a full conversion back to pure stock, OS and Recovery... then start from scratch. The sad part is this is not something we have not all done and trust me, do this mistake a couple of times and you will learn no to do it again.
Suggest looking to find yours here....

Thank-You, Jimi for the "link" and advice... I'll let the group know how this turns out!
Jimi, The "link" I'm drawn to... https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/addison/official/RETAIL/ ... on my box, XT1635-02 - Retail - BLK - Egypt-Lebanon-Tunisia this was purchased on eBay (Florida Re-seller) as a "Refurb". Have I selected the right rom, what "info" on this phone would help me?

Retail is the one I see most go to.
Jimi & forum, I've read a few posts about recovering my "addison" and I'm hesitant to "wipe the device" and start anew, from my "explanation" above this is what I'm left with at the moment... the device will only boot from 'recovery" (volume down & power) and then selecting "start", if I power off normally and power on it will only boot into TWRP (3.2.1-0) where I can also select "Reboot" then Bootloader, and I'm back with a "functioning" device. Can you direct me to "Recovery" tools defined? I'd like to read up. thank's again
I found the "recovery" info, but again I'm afraid to lose my "unlocked bootloader" if I "wipe" the device, this will happen? and from what I see on the "forum" their isn't a a lot of info on the "Moto Z Play" I should think of this as a "variant" of the Moto Z line and look elsewhere? (Droid, etc.) Thank's

If you go back to stock you wont lose you unlocked bootloader,
Jimi & group, I waited a few days before "applying stock" I was successful, the Z Play is functioning normally and applied Shamu's latest, I really thought that with Magisk (root) OTA "anything" wouldn't effected the device... in this case the "bootloader" Thank's for the replies/help! I looked into updating my 2013 Nexus 7 to Android L yesterday and hit a couple snags. I was using a guide over on nexus7root, mainly for the files and command lines.
I used Nexus Root Toolkit to get the proper drivers installed and to unlock the bootloader. Then I got on with installed L. Command Prompt got stuck at 'Erasing user data' for about an hour. Not a lot I could do but turn it off and try again. It doesn't want to get past that point. I give up for the evening and just try to turn the tablet back on. It gets stuck with 'Google' written on the screen and an unlocked padlock at the bottom. Won't go any further. I go back to NRT and select 'Flash stock and unroot' with 'Soft bricked/bootloop' selected. It whizzes through a little too quickly and my Nexus is still displaying the recovery screen. NRT says it might not have worked and to select 'Force flash mode' and try again. I do that but still no luck.
The tablet will now only display 2 screens: Google with unlocked padlock, or recovery.
Any ideas on what to try next?
Thanks in advance

You have 2 choices.
1) Start from square 1 and try to install L again using the instructions you have or other instructions that can be found right here on XDA (i wouldnt because you arent installing the actual OTA but rather the developer version which has bugs and such and you will end up having to do number 2 when L comes out anyways.)
2) unbrick your device by reflashing it to stock. there are plenty of ways to do this, look for unbricking on the forums here and you should be ok.
Just a tip for the next time you decide to flash anything if you ever do, make a backup of your entire stock system before doing so, you can do this in the recovery that you install before flashing the new rom. It makes unbricking quite a bit easier.

1) I can't update using the instructions as it hangs at 'Erasing user data'.
2) I've tried to unbrick and flash back to stock using NRT but it just goes back to FlashBoot and never finishes.
Dunno if I'm allowed to, but...

You're absolutely right! Always, always make a backup/nandroid before flashing a different rom. But if you don't and like to live dangerously you should at least have the sdk installed and know how to use adb/fastboot! One thing though about restoring a backup, it does not restore the bootloader. Android L uses bootloader version 4.04 and KitKat uses 4.02. The first L preview used the same bootloader as KK but the new preview does not. I have no idea what kind of bugs or worse would result from restoring a KK nandroid onto the 4.04 bootloader. Maybe nothing but I purposely didn't try to find out if it would cause any problems. Couple nights ago I checked out the preview for maybe an hour then went back to 4.4.4. I flashed the 4.4.4 factory image using a modified flash_all batch file then restored on top of that. I guess I could have instead fastboot flashed the bootloader then went straight into recovery to install my backup. Just something to think about, bootloader versions.

You said previously "The tablet will now only display 2 screens: Google with unlocked padlock, or recovery." Unlocked padlock means your bootloader is unlocked and your device now can have images flashed to it. Recovery or bootloader screen? You need to be able to get into the bootloader screen. Press and hold the volume down button, while still holding down the volume button press the power button for a few seconds release the power button and it should go into the bootloader screen. There are a couple toolkits that might help, Wug"s and One-Click Restore come to mind. I've never used them so I wouldn't be any help as far as they go. I can try to help if you want to use the sdk. Do you have the android sdk installed?
i had the same problem , i tried one click restore and it works fine

Don't delete your user data before backing it up!
See WugFreshs Threads on XDA!
So I used ATGAdmin's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381582
Used "Dead_Nexus7.bat" and it fixed me right up. Plus, I love the "Look you dumb motherf**kers" attitude he has in his video.
I appear to be all sorted anyway! Thanks to those who suggested 'One Click Restore', it set me on the right path.
I purchased a 5x for my wife so she can get on Project Fi. They said it was stuck boot looping, thinking I could solve the problem.
Here are the basics.
-Yes, I can get into boot loader (the menu of start, recovery, etc), but I can't get into TWRP. Tried flashing TWRP a few times and nothing. SkipSoft recognizes that its installed though.
-After bootlooping for awhile, it will load normally and work fine. However it wants to update to the newest version of android. I run the ota and back to bootlooping. It will show the android dude and say "error". Will eventually start bootlooping and then boot normally.
-I have flashed different stock versions. I tried the newest, the second to newest and the last M available. All will flash but continue the bootlooping.
Bootlooping can be anywhere from 1 minute to 10+.
The device will also first display something like, "Your device software can't be checked for corruptions. Please lock the bootloader"
But it'll show up whether the bootloader is locked or not.
The phone will freeze at some point. Whether right away or after 5 minutes. It freezes and then restarts and goes through the bootloop again.
So what else can/should I do? I've never dealt with Kernels but wondering if the last owner did something to them. Is there a way to flash stock kernels just incase or is this done when I flash a Google Factory Stock Image?
Would flashing a non-stock rom be a good idea?
Thanks
So I tried sideloading. I was able to get into the stock recovery. I tried wiping cache and data, then tried installing the newest stock rom.
Everything seemed to work. Then I had to restart. A message popped up after the same "Your device software can't be checked for corruptions. Please lock the bootloader". It had the title in blue stating "Encryption unsuccessful".
Then said, "Encryption was interrupted and can't complete. As a result, the data on your phone is no longer accessible. To resume using your phone you need to perform a factory reset. When you set up your phone after the reset, you'll have an opportunity to restore any data that was backed up to your Google Account."
Then there is a single button that says, "Reset Phone".
Problem still persists.
Help please...
Why did you bought a bootlooped phone?

When my Nexus 5x got into bootloop, I sent it to LG and they had to change the whole circuit. So yeah.
When you flash Google Factory Image, it flash the stock kernel.
If you have warranty, then send it to Google/LG. If you haven't got, then you're in problem. New motherboard needed, but it's expensive.

Hello my juicy people,
I have a problem with twrp on the LG G4 h815. First, yes I unlocked my bootloader correctly with the unlock.bin and without any errors. Also it's not my first phone to unlock and flash twrp on.
So the problem is, I flashed twrp, but when I go into recovery mode, I come to the official factory reset.
I thought TWRP will wipe this old ****ty factory reset and replace it completely?
Then I get asked: "Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings?"
I select "Yes" and then get to the next question which is the same question, but with some extra words underneath it, which are: "Select Yes to delete"
First of all, I already selected Yes...why is he asking me again? It's NOT even a question like "Are you sure you want to delete everything"....but whatever....
The point is here, if I select "Yes" again, THEN I get into TWRP....wtf....
A different way I get into twrp is if I connect my phone with my PC and type "adb reboot recovery" into the terminal. Then I get immediately into TWRP without having to deal with the official factory reset menu.
So my questions are:
1) Why is the official factory reset still there?
2) Why do I get into TWRP only through the official factory reset ( except of course through typing "adb reboot recovery" into a terminal on a PC ) ?
3) How do I make it "TWRP only" ? I read on the TWRP site, that I can put TWRP on a SD-Card and then flash it through the TWRP, I can get in, onto the recovery partition. So, flashing TWRP through TWRP...
But how do I do that? Will it get flashed automatically onto the recovery partition if I just flash it like Cyanogenmod/LineageOS or do I have to select something different in the TWRP menu?
Thanks in advance
im guessing that volume up+power key combo does something besides than booting straight to recovery (maybe boots to that screen then that screen boots to recovery idk).

Thx for trying to help me, but really Sherlock? It "does something besides than booting straight to recovery"......not that my problem is all about that.....and not that I mentioned that in my start-post.....???
But let's say, you had good intentions....I think. Then:
First, it's volume down+power key.
Secondly, it doesn't boot automatically after some time into TWRP when I'm in the factory reset menu. Only if I go thorugh the original factory reset menu like I mentioned in my start-post.

Suspect the problem is either in failing to follow EXACTLY the installation instructions in [RECOVERY][h815/h811][OFFICIAL][MM] TWRP 3 touch recovery [2017-03-11] (https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/recovery-twrp-3-touch-recovery-t3442424) authored by steadfasterX now OR the version you have flashed (see the Announcement from steadfaster: WHICH TWRP VERSION TO CHOOSE?, at the top of the OP).
In any event, your questions should be posted in that site, directed to steadfasterX. He has proven very responsive and extremely helpful to many individuals (as an aside, I used in my older MOTO G LTE one of his TWRP versions and without a doubt it was the best until the later Official version was released, so I would definitely check out, at a minimum, his stable Beta version linked in his announcement at the top of the OP)

My friend's J2 Prime (SM-G532G/DS) happened to be stucked at Security Error (blue screen), no idea how it get there. Tried to flash stock firmware. But after flashing, the phone booted back into the same blue screen, now with a line of red text at the top saying, "Custom binary blocked by FRP. (recovery. img)". Tried many different stock firmware (with 4 files) but none of them solved the problem. Can't boot into recovery, only download mode. Can someone give me detailed step by step on how to fixed this.
If it help, I'm from Malaysia. So maybe the firmware might need to be from this region. Not sure about the origin of the phone though. Also, what could be the reason for this to happen? I'm assuming root. Could it even happen on its own, I mean without rooting or flashing?
also G532G/DS - ARH1 bootloader
i've been going thru lots of ROMs (including testing Lineages), this have never happened to me before.
Flashing stock firmware thru Odin though, require OEM Unlocking ON in Developer Settings.
^ I mean, did you/your friend turn it on before flashing? if not, it actually succeeded?
Only solution might be possible:
Go to stock recovery (POWER + HOME + VOL-UP), wait for it to load, then factory reset from there.
I suppose some images might help!
I'm pretty sure the OEM if off because he know nothing about this thing. When I got it, it already like this. Can't get into recovery, after the first Samsung logo appear, it went straight into the error screen. Same thing happened after flashing.
I don't know how to post images here...

+ OEM Unlock: if disabled, Odin should've failed straight away and no reboot stuff going.
+ Can't get into recovery:
Is it true that you cannot get into recovery? If left stock, It should be an Android with spinning stuff, text is "installing update" then no command for a while ~2min, and it will go to normal recovery.
I mean, it is supposed to do "recovery" :v
+ Images: post it on Imgur (or any online image service). Copy link here, add space between "https://" and all the stuff there. Wont be considered URL i guess (havent tried)
I have an unrooted Pixel 3 XL and am unable to install the December update. Each time I try, my phone reboots and sits on the updating screen with the progress bar for several minutes, then reboots and tries again two more times, then finally boots back to the home screen with a notification saying "Couldn't install system update." If I click on this notification I can "Try Again" but it always does the same thing.
Does anyone know what could be causing my phone not to update, or how to look at logs that would tell me what's going on?

I'm just running the regular system update process through Settings > System > Update, so unless my phone got confused about what phone it is I'm not sure how this would happen haha.
The only "non-regular" modification I've made to my phone is that I use Tasker and have granted it several system-level permissions through ADB, but this has never impacted a system update in the past...

I see. Sorry I thought you were side loading the image. OTA wow weird.
I've thought about trying to sideload the OTA, but on the OTA download site the first prerequisite listed is that there are currently no pending system updates, which is clearly not the case for me. Anyone know if there's actually a risk in attempting this?

I think you misunderstand. You cannot flash the factory image because you are BL locked. Sideloading an OTA image via recovery is also called a "rescue OTA". Don't worry...your bootloader is locked so you're not going to hose anything. You are stuck now... cannot use system update. Flashing the OTA is not going to wipe your data, or render your phone unbootable. It MAY however get you "unstuck". Just follow Google's detailed instructions on the page you linked. Good luck! :good:

Flashing the OTA is not going to wipe your data, or render your phone unbootable. It MAY however get you "unstuck". Just follow Google's detailed instructions on the page you linked. Good luck! :good:

Hmm so it seems I can't even sideload the OTA, I'm guessing cause of the locked bootloader. When I reboot to recovery the screen just says "No command" and no buttons on the phone do anything, I see no option on the phone to sideload via ADB. Running "adb devices" on my connected laptop shows the active device in host mode, but I think it has to be in sideload mode for it to work. I've also tried clearing cache and data from the Google app before trying the regular update method again, but that didn't help either.

1) You do not need an unlocked bootloader to sideload an OTA.
2) Everyone with P2/P3/P4 stock recovery can sideload an OTA via adb. You don't even have to have USB debugging enabled in Developer settings. It is hard coded into recovery.
3) You probably aren't in recovery mode. Youtube a video on how to get into recovery mode, or Google "rescue OTA" or "sideload OTA via adb".
4) Upload a photo of your recovery screen
5) Double check you are using the latest adb/fastboot binaries
6) Report back

You're right on #3, I didn't properly enter recovery mode - after getting to the "No Command" screen I was pressing and holding power and vol+ together (which didn't do anything) instead of holding power and then pressing vol+ to enter the menu. Anyway, once I got in I pressed "Apply update from ADB," confirmed via "adb sideload" that the phone was in the right mode, and started the OTA sideload (see picture for the PowerShell output). Once this completed successfully, I rebooted the phone but it did the same thing as before - 3 bootloops then boot into the home screen with an "update failed" notification.

I would have expected a more verbose output but have not personally had to do a rescue OTA (my phones are all BL unlocked), so I don't know what the correct output looks like... but note there are no errors. Are you positive you are using the latest binaries I linked to? My version is 29.0.5 (October 2019). "adb version"
You stated you were unrooted, but are you BL unlocked? If not, you only have one option left that I am aware of. That is to to a factory data reset from recovery (or settings). If you were to contact Google Support and let them know where you are now and what you have done so far, they are going to have you FDR. The full OTA you flashed via adb is more complete than an incremental OTA and should have corrected your issue. If you are not BL locked yet, but have an unlockable phone you would still have to wipe data during the unlocking process, so go ahead and start backing your stuff up anyway. Good luck! :good:

I have the Verizon variant, so bootloader cannot be unlocked (OEM unlocking is disabled in Developer Options).
adb version shows me:
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.41
Version 29.0.5-5949299
I think at this point I'm gonna wait for the January update and see if that one takes. Thanks for all the help!

Well, you learned something here anyway. I believe incremental OTA's need to be applied sequentially, but since I always flash the full image I'm admittedly not very versed on OTA's. You may want to research that point further so you don't end up waiting two weeks for naught. Also would not hurt to make sure to manually sync backups, verify photos is backing to the cloud, and in TiBu do a "force redo of your backups" then zip that entire folder, transferring it safely off the phone. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!

Well that's the issue - I don't have the option to use an app like TiBu because I can't have root, so as far as I know I basically have to rely on Google's automatic backups/restores during initial phone setup, if I end up doing a factory reset. Before this phone I've always had a rooted phone with TiBu doing nightly backups to the cloud, so not having that has already been giving me anxiety the entire time I've had this phone haha.
I think the biggest thing I learned is to never buy a Verizon model phone again.

Ah, ok. Well the Google backup has improved dramatically with 9 & 10 and works quite well. Hope you get it sorted soon. :good:
@Jinded, what happens if you try to sideload the OTA for the same version you currently have?
I have been wondering in a different thread, if the Goggle OTAs will work well on Verizon devices. It used to be there were device specific releases on the Google site as well as the general releases. Things like vendor and modem would likely be different.
Edit:
Reading through the forum, this post suggests that settings that are enabled in November are not available in December, preventing the update. Booting to safe mode will probably reset the ROM settings without factory resetting. Less to set back up.
