how do you guys improve battery life - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

I've been getting a steady 5 hr sot every day. I want to push it past normal ?.
I'm rooted. I've been using l speed in battery profile for ages and still getting 5hr sot.
I greenify every app with wakelocks and my phone's almost never awake when it's not meant to be.
But still can rarely get past 6 hr sot. I'm on 4.7.6.
Just wondering how Yous improve your sot?
Maybe ideal settings for kernel auditor etc?
Thanks

Judging by your location the outside will probably be quite bright so when using the phone outside as well a SoT of around 6 hours seems quite okay to me.
When you're a caveman like me and sit inside in a dimly lit room you can achieve 10+ hours.
It all depends on the circumstances. When you see somebody achieve 11 hours SoT you can be certain this was not on a beach with screen on maximum brightness, a weak phone signal, zipping a 2GB folder in the background and playing games the whole time :good:

The biggest battery killer is the screen itself. I'm always at 30-35%. At night at home I use night mode and put the brightness between 10-12%. i use Dark Theme and use a black background to conserve battery.
Secondly apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so forth uses a lot of battery not only by using them, but also because of all the notifications.
Use the website instead.
Thirdly, it depends on your usage, mobile reception, if you constantly use your camera, what apps you're using, heavy gamer, etc...
----
I'm constantly getting between 8-12H SOT depending on the days.

Very poor battery life?

Hey guys. I've been noticing a while that a lot of people on the forums get 12+ hours even on heavy web browsing, calling, apps, and texting. I usually can't get through a day of usage (probably 12 hours?) with my phone, and I carry 2 extra batteries with me. I calibrated my battery using the battery calibration app here on XDA and my screen is set on auto. I'm on Syndicate v. 1.1.1 and I use the stock battery.
It will usually last me 3-4 hours of 'heavy' usage (calls, games, texts) and maybe 5-7 hours of 'moderate' usage (when I'm at school, some texting, barely any internet usage, and a few calls)
Are there things that can 'harm' a battery? Some people say it's bad to charge a phone and use it at the same time, but I call people while its plugged in multiple times every day (probably a couple hours worth a day). Does that deteriorate the battery?
I'll post a screenshot of my battery usage tomorrow if that helps.
(note- I am a calling freak. So far I'm about 3/5 in my billing period and I've used 10,580 minutes. )
The charging and using not so much but letting it repeatedly drop low and get hot kills it

the one thing i would do to extend your battery life would probably be to take the screen setting off of auto and manually set it to the lowest brightness you can tolerate.
are you using the twilight zone 1.1.1 kernel? try using the genocide 1.0 seems to give me better mileage imho
I have noticed this even with my extended battery. I am actually going back to 1.1.0 with Vision kernel to test.
Phone calls kill this batter no matter what. Our specs for talk time is 4-6 hours I don't remember
So 3-4 hours on heavy usage is normal if I'm doing excessive calling?
Some days I have a 5 hour battery, some days I have a 20 hour battery - all depends on how I use the phone.
On the short days I use it a lot, I'm throwing attachments around in Gmail, files around in Dropbox, using 4G, and using my phone outdoors - read brightness up.
On the long days I'm using Juice Defender and Screen Filter - read brightness down - I'm mainly texting and powering the screen off asap, and getting in the occasional fb/tw check, and I'm hanging out in areas with stronger Sprint service.
My advice for elongating your battery - use Juice Defender and customise which the data controls by app. Use Screen Filter at about 60% and manual display brightness. Slide your finger left and right along the window shade to keep the brightness down. With the SAMOLED the more dark colours on the screen the longer the battery will last, so always pick dark themes on apps. If you're going to be in a low service area for a while toggle data off if it's an option.
Lastly, I picked a Zagg Sparq for this phone. I charge the Sparq in once or twice a week and then I plug my phone into it on the go on those days when I have trouble. Use the General port instead of the Optimized one. I played the multiple battery game with my G1..I prefer carrying around a juice box.

Real world battery expectations

I usually get about 13 hours with light use with everything syncing, live background, and screen on for about 2-3 hours. What do you guys usually get?
I get a good 10 with heavy use, which is darn good for this type of phone.
About the same for me.

OK, this Android OS bug is bugging me. I haven't even used the phone at all and it's 11.30am and I already lost 55% battery life, took off charger at 5am. Guess the culprit...
I really don't want to flash some custom ROM or root yet when a stock ROM is not out or start from scratch reset but I like everything about this phone and came running into its embrace from a NS4G that I thought had a terrible battery and craptastic radio. This is absurd.
So perplexed at the moment...

im stock, and with little use like only 1 hr screen on time it was 54% after 16 hrs
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2
I've flashed to Starburst v1.5 and I have been getting 10+ hours with pretty heavy/frequent use.
Phone is sitting dormant really with just very little use. Has been off the charger since 6:30am and its not 2pm and I am at 88%.
just checking email and doing my fantasy football updates. Little web action to unsubscribe from some sites and that is about it. Definitely much better than yesterday. Rebooted and got my Android OS taking 30% of battery instead of 54% and got juicedefender running on aggressive. Seems like my battery is super good now.
Heavy use... About 12hrs. Live wallpaper, FB, maps, gps, 4G, games, etc...
Light use.. around 21hrs. I was still at 30% when I took that pic. I don't know maybe it could do 30hrs. Live wallpaper, FB, and text from time to time...
Running stock btw with no battery helper apps or juice defenders, and Im using the "Galaxy" live wallpaper. Still, even for heavy use this thing has lasted me. Very happy with the battery life.

Here's a way to calculate your expected usage. It isn't exactly precise but it will give you a decent estimate.
Gmail/contact/calendar sync on.
Battery consumption:
1) Screen off, wifi on - 0.5%-1% per hour.
2) Screen off, 3g on, good signal - 1% per hour.
3) Screen off, 3g on, bad signal - 1 - 10% per hour.
4) Screen on, minimal brightness, reading e-books - 1% per 8 minutes.
5) Screen on, minimal/medium brightness, web browsing/youtube - 1% per 4 minutes.
6) Screen on, minimal/medium brightness, games - 1% per 2 minutes.
Me today so far... I was at school thats why there wasnt much use for a while..

Either your phone is defective, or ... Come on! I can get 6-7 hours of youtube. Streaming music with the screen off must use much less battery.
Something else is draining your battery in a big way.
In all likelihood, you are used to gsm phones, and not CDMA. With CDMA phones, having a weak signal result is a HEAVY battery drain.
So, if you signal is kinda weak, in an office or other place of work, you are likely to burn battery.
My Sprint signal is very weak at work. What I do to save battery is switch to roaming.
My secondary roaming provider has a much stronger signal. Their cell tower must be much closer..
So, the battery drain while roaming is almost as low as with Sprint with a good signal.
For CDMA phones, there's paid app in the market called Roam Control.
Using that app to switch to roaming and save battery is the only way I know...]
EDIT: Ok, I lied... I just thought a bit more about the issue.
There's another way.
You can flash a verizon PRL instead of a Sprint one. Verizon usually has a stronger (and less battery draining) signal in my area...
1% per hour at idle with no use (idle) here.
Goes up with use.
6 - 8 hours of medium duty use (web music ect)
4 hours of streaming netflix
overall compares very favorably with every android device i've ever used (starting with launch day moment (nov 2009)
this is with everything on 4g, bluetooth , gps ect. with no effort to save batt. usually in a marginal service area.

Battery life stinks? What gives?

Ok so I bought my White Note 4 when it launched and so far, I've been less then impressed by the battery life. What's weird is my wife has the exact same phone and hers seems to last WAY longer even though we have about the same things turned on (I keep bluetooth on and location on but only when I'm opening like facebook or google maps does the location icon ever appear).
Here is my battery life in a nutshell. 5 hours off of charger and only 1 hour of on screen time and its at 76%. For whatever reason photobucket isn't letting me upload my screenshot.
Screen is 24% (1hr 7minutes)
android os 16%
android system 15%
facebook 9%
cell standby 6%
and so on.
Signal strength in my office where I have been all morning is -110 dbm. Phone has been on wifi all day, bluetooth is left on, location on, but thats pretty much it. Turning off bluetooth didn't seem to change it at all btw.
What gives? Anything I can do? I see guys posting screen shots of there battery life that is SOO much better than mine.
Thanks for the help!
that's not terrible...you would be looking at 20+ hours of uptime and 4.5 hours of SOT. You could probably improve it with no WiFi/BT/location and bringing your screen brightness down.
I get about 30 hours up and 5-6 hours of SOT. I greenified everything that doesn't need to be active and I use automateit to turn GPS on and off only as apps that require it are in use (root only for that).
The problem with comparing battery life is that there are so many variables. Go airplane mode with screen at 5% and you can probably get 10 hours of SOT. Conversely if you are anywhere where signal isn't great or even if it is but switches towers a lot and the battery life will be terrible. 5 hours or so of SOT should be plenty for the vast majority of users between charges ( zero lemon thread participants exempted).

Battery life varies per device as no two users have the phones setup the exact same way with the same apps. I averaged at least 6 hours of SOT when connected to wifi and about 5 to 5 1/2 hours of SOT when using LTE. I never use bluetooth, location is set to high accuracy.
BT is designed to be low power when not connected. Location on is your biggest drain. Set to "battery saving," and you'll be ok.
Doesn't greenify need root access? I have the retail version so no root here. I've used it with my note 2 and it did help a lot but it doesn't look like root will be coming to the note 4 any time soon unfortunately.

No but you are limited to what you can hibernate. I use the paid version without root and am very happy with my battery stats. I get about 6 to 7 hours of screen time with about four days between charges. Try the unpaid version first.
Changing my location to Battery Saving has been the biggest jump in battery life for me. I do have Greenify installed but I don't think it really helps that much for my non-root phone.
I use widgetsoid and only use a few toggles off it but i keep my location off, bluetooth off, and use screen settings as follows in darkness 10%, regular light 40%, bright bright light 100%. I keep wifi on while using it and then turn it off when im out. My battery lasts me all day and then some. That includes Facebook and Twitter and other stuff. I haven't used greenify since switching from my note 2, but im sure theres even more I could do, especially with Tasker.

Battery life

Anyone have feedback on SOT?
Anecdotally, about 3 hours SOT. But my signal isn't great, and I'm a moderate user.
I'll post some screen shots later. But it's above average battery life. 3 hrs SOT usually. Using it with LTE and no Google now service. Lasts around 16 hrs.

Here is the usage. Not that great but manageable.
Actually, I'm getting a pretty awesome SoT: 6 hours, with light-moderate usage (mostly reddit and G+, some Youtube, Hangouts and Chrome). Auto brightness is on, sync is on, 3G on (although I'm on wifi) and NFC is on.
Mind you, I don't use any crappy battery-draining apps like WhatsApp/Facebook/Snapchat/Viber.
So...6 hours SoT but your screenshot shows just over 3?

He has half battery left
Battery seems to be sliding more quickly here. Time will tell.
Looking forward to getting some custom kernel love on this device tbh.
UPDATE: I'd call myself a moderate user as I don't really game much.
I'm getting pretty horrendous battery life. Looking at it dropping a percent near every couple of minutes, maybe less, of use. I left work at 16:00 and I've dropped from 50% battery (minimal use from 06:20 this morning), to 24% while I type.
That's just not acceptable. I'm looking at getting barely 3.5hrs SOT at this rate.
I thought it would settle but it hasn't. I've got Greenify pro and even hibernated Facebook and Messenger but I'm not seeing too much of a difference.
Phone also appears to get hot with certain task very very easily. Particularly when browsing. Might try a different browser, but if the problem, this is therefore only a workaround.
The Robin is my wife's phone. She charges it each morning before work and after 24 hours usually is down to around 35-40% and will have at least 2.5 hours of SOT.
She uses Wi-Fi at home, and I think all of her SoT is in chrome. She uses Gnow and has location set to high accuracy.
This morning she didn't charge it and was at 62% but I didn't check her usage stats. Tonight she'll be at 36+ hours off the charger and I'll check it then.
Yesterday was an incredible day for battery. Hit a magical 5 hours of SOT. Normal usage, but I am a light to moderate user.
Please define light to moderate user if you can? I have emails, Gmail, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc all syncing and use mainly chrome, YouTube and the above apps..I'm seeing close to 3 hours SoT with GPS Bluetooth and wifi always on.

@Wiggz - I use Messenger, Facebook, Bacon Reader, Twitter, Inbox, and Chrome most of the day. I have GPS off since I don't really use Maps too often and brightness was at about 50-55%. I also don't have a BT device, so BT is off as well.

I haven't used it for much more than GPS driving. An hour and a half with screen constantly on used up about 16% of the battery, indicating slightly over 9 hours.
3hrs SoT isn't better than average, 4hrs is average.
So no one is getting good battery life? 4 hours screen on is AVERAGE. You should get that with LTE enabled and using twitter, reddit, youtube, etc.

If you are going to use Facebook and the Messenger app you will never have decent enough battery life on any phone. Those are some of the worst apps developer could have made and consume A LOT of battery in background. If you remove those two apps I can almost guarantee that your battery life will be improved by 20-25%.

Maximizing SOT to get 8+ hours

Hi Guys,
I have checked the real-life reviews about the SOT and I see lots of people posting a SOT of 8+ hours.
Personally I get about 6 hours consistently every time but never was able to get these miracle numbers. Are you people just lowering your brightness to the lowest point and having battery saver on all time to be able to show off? or is there some magic going on?
Anyways, if anyone has tips regarding maximizing the SOT without giving up to many features I'd be happy to know (e.g. WiFi scanning off or on, disabling location tracking etc.). I don't want to root my beautiful device .. yet .
Thanks! Never Settle!
5 to 6 hours is average with moderate usage. 4 to 5 hours is with heavy usage like GPS and YouTube. 7+ hours would be with minimal usage plus few tweaking like dark theme and wallpaper turn off location and data. It all comes down to how you use the phone. I have rooted my phone with magisk and using greenify and Google play services doze module it gives me excellent battery life. 2 days of usage with single charge get about 5+ hours of sot. Which is very surprising

I'm guessing they don't use battery draining apps like Snapchat and Facebook. I also turned off raise to wake and ambiant display and got way more sot. I went from 4 to over 5.
I used to get 8-9 hours on my OP5 and I'm averaging 7-7.5 on this 5T. Maybe its a ROM thing or maybe the taller screen is playing a role, either way I don't mind since 7 or so hours is still really good for my needs

Just like @big_b0sss said, it all depends on how you use your phone. When I wanted to check sot , I used it very frequently by browsing, games , YouTube etc and I got around 8 hrs sot with about 15% battery still left. But that's not how I really use my phone, with my normal use , I charge my phone when it's at about 30% and when I do it's every 2 days and sot at about 4-5 hrs which is absolutely fine for me.
I get 7-8 hrs with easy use(messaging, social media, browsing) on 80 percent wifi and 20 mobile data.
Stock kernel or custom?
Using widgets and a lot of other things with sensors will cause battery drain too, I only get about 4hrs but it does last all day
I get approx 7 hrs of sot with moderate usage. No root, deep clear in recents, force stop messenger and whatsapp, location off wifi scanning off, automatic brightness.... I play shadowgun online 1 hr, youtube and uc browser.....
I got 9 hours SOT. No limits ROM and franco kernel ?
