Phone has problems with detecting the internet connection of wifi - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
my Nexus 5x has problems with detecting the internet connection of my home wifi. If I connect freshly to the wifi (by turning wifi on my phone on), internet connection is detected. But if the phone is not used for some time, the Nexus "thinks" that the wifi has no internet access and uses mobile connection instead. This only occurs with my Nexus and the wifi in my flat. I do not experience those issues with my notebook nor the phone of my girlfriend at my home wifi. Nor does my Nexus 5x show those issues with any other wifi.
Does anyone of you experience similar issues oder do you know how to get rid of my problem?
Best regards,
wewa

Similar problem happen to me on 8.1. I solved with giving the WiFi connection static IP address in the settings (long tap on WiFi SSID and choose advanced, add static IP from range of your router). After some time it fixed by itself somehow and there was no need for static IP settings.
Somehow phone didn't get the IP from DHCP I think.

WiFi stuck on Obtaining IP/Avoided Poor Connection

For some reason, my Wifi connectivity on my GNexus has gotten really bad lately. I'm trying to connect to my home router (Netgear WNDR3400), and it gets stuck on a loop at obtaining IP address then avoided poor connection and it keeps reseting back and forth. It only manages to connect maybe 20 mins in the day and it looses the connection again.
Reseting the router only fixes the problem momentarily then the next day it can't connect again. The router is working perfectly fine in my house w/ the computer and laptops. iPhone and HTC Thunderbolt are also perfectly fine.
What can I do to fix this?

Have you tried assigning a static ip address to the phone?
Also what type of network? My phone does it on a 802.1 wireless b network with identity security (individual uname and password to connect) Which is what my university uses... annoying it was, but i found out that foxfi was causeing the issue. But im assuming your home network isnt like that.
How do I assign a static IP to the phone?
My router is 802.11n. And it has network security, secured by WPA/WPA2 to be exact.
App called WiFi static will let you set a static IP within a dhcp network. You probably can do it through your router as well. I would read up on static vs dhcp if you have never set up a static IP before. Also you'll want to see what all of the clients ips are so you don't create a duplicate.

Is there another solution other than that?

Anyone having this issue on the Verizon stock ROM 4.2.2? I cannot connect to any wifi with DHCP. The only way I can connect is if I enter at static IP. I have tried about a half dozen access points with no luck. I have even done a complete phone wipe of data and tried reconnecting without logging into my google account to sync down my wifi settings. This pretty much prevents me from connecting to any public wifi hotspots unless I can guess their IP range. I have never had anything other than the stock ROM and OTA updates. Is there something somewhere I can clear or reset to fix this? It worked at one time long ago prior to jellybean I think.

[TIP] Wifi connected but no internet connection!

At some points in your life, one of your Android devices connect to a wifi router, but can't connect to the internet. However, your computer, laptop or iPad will connect to that same wifi and use the internet just fine. I've looked everywhere on the internet for solutions, some of them are:
+ Turn off and on both modem and wifi router
+ Factory reset wifi router
+ Battery pull your phone, wait 30s and put it back
+ Reflash stock or custom ROM
+ Change DHCP IP setting to Static
+ Disable security (WEP, WPA) on wifi router
+ Check DNS server, gateway IP address for correctness
Fortunately, I stumbled upon this old thread last night -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371794
It helped fix the internet connection temporarily, turning off and on wifi on phone caused the issue to repeat.
In summary, he found out the correct MAC address for gateway was mismatched with the one on his phone. Even though the gateway IP address is correct (example: default gateway IP 192.168.1.1)
Upon further investigations, I found out my Wifi ROUTER has the same IP address with my MODEM (192.168.1.1) This IP conflict causes the phone to recognized the WIFI ROUTER's MAC address as the gateway's MAC address. This problem mostly occurs on Android phone, not computer (I'm no tech savvy so I have no idea why)
Simple fix: Go to wifi router setting page, change the IP address on wifi router to different number (other than default 192.168.1.1), and the problem should be fixed.
Please help spread the words to fellow Android lovers, I'm sure a lot of us have struggled with this problem
I'm one guy who is desperately looking for a solution to this.
Unfortunately the solution you gave didn't work.
Hi
i have a problem with wifi. it remains connected but loses internet access randomly. i found this solution:
"In the wifi networks, select the network you want and select ‘Forget network’
Turn off the wifi
kill all the apps with your task manager
Turn on the wifi again
Connect to the network
Check the internet connectivity
If still the problem exist, switch off the phone and redo the above steps"
it solves the problem, but it happens again after some minutes. actually, i also installed an app named "wifi fixer" which does the above process automatically. when the program is active, it turns the wifi off and on every 2-3 minutes. and the phone has internet access when the program tuns the wifi on.
any idea?
Turn off wifi optimization on some android phones help.

(bump) By any chance, are you all using Aztech's router? I have the same problem with my Aztech router.

2 years after the last reply I am having the same problem. My wife and kids all have internet access on their phones, tablets, desktop and laptops all from the same modem router yet I am unable to use the internet on my Galaxy S2 mobile phone even though my phone says connected to Wi-Fi Network Netgear 06.
The Mac address solution provided isn't applicable to my situation as my Mac address on my mobile is different to my modem router Mac address.
Any other solution?

[Q] WiFi problems...

Anyone having trouble with WiFi? With my home router it just keeps cycling between "Authenticating" and "Obtaining IP Address". It will connect with my Nexus 4 if I use my N4 to create a WiFi hotspot. My old N7 connects to this router just fine. It has full bars and is using WPA/WPA2 PSK security. I tried WPS and it didn't work either. Anyone else having issues or have any ideas? I want to root this, but I need to make sure the wireless is working correctly first.
Edit: It appears to work correctly if I switch to 2.4 GHZ mode, but will not connect correctly under Auto or 5GHZ mode. Curious if anyone else is having this problem.

Hotspot Problems

Hi I'm trying to connect my laptop to the Internet over Wi-Fi using my Nexus 5X as the hotspot.
When it connects to the Wi-Fi network it says the connection is limited when I check the Wi-Fi status in windows it shows packets being sent but nothing being received?
I've tried restarting both my laptop & 5X still the same issue.

Tether / hotspot - poor performance?

5x on Fi
Stock 7.1.1
I enabled wifi hotspot on the 5x. Devices have a hard time connecting, with the dreaded "obtaining IP address" loop, and frequent authentication errors. The guest device has been connecting perfectly reliably to other android phone hotspots or wifi, and continues to work fine with other phones.
Also, when connected to the hotspot, I get poor bandwith, including frequent pauses in the connection.
Yes, I am aware of setting a static IP in the settings. But, it sounds like an issue with the 5x, or 7.1.1. I'd rather have a solid solution. Again, the device works fine using other hotspots or wifi connections.
