I have a "xxooapp" folder and also getting random firefox popups when doing nothing - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have a "xxooapp" folder and also getting random firefox popups when doing nothing
For starters i have a folder on my phone called xxooapp and 3 random files with no extensions inside the folder.
Also I'm getting random popups in firefox and firefox focus while playing on my phone. I don't even have to be in in firefox to get popups. I have downloaded popup blockers and ad blockers for firefox and i also have adaway installed and no root firewall and blocked all apps that dont need internet. I also tried avg anti virus and it was clean. I've un-installed the last few programs that i have installed since it started but that didnt help either The webpage is newprofitcontrol.com/0/ every time
Any ideas on either of these? Thx

There is an adblocker of sorts built into Internet explorer. Tracking lists. There are guides posted around on how to enable them for IE. By the way, popups and ads are not the same (bit of thread title vs content confusion there)

Oops i meant ads. I have popups under control, but i feel like if we can disable ads it would make ie more faster. For example like chromes adblock. I dont really like the tracking list way.

in fact, if you go to Settings, Safety, Turn on Tracking Protection and then click on Get a Tracking Protection List Online at bottom of the window that opens, choose the EasyList Standard - most of the ads are gone. In fact, some of the sites I was not able to open anymore or had terrible lags are opening fine now and do not display ads.
cheers
Post above is exactly what I meant. I have seen GoodDayToDie recommending easylist, have tried it myself, works as well as the adblock extension to google chrome.
EasyList Standard (instructions above) works very well. That's really all that you need for websites, but another option is to go with a HOSTS file, such as the one at http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm. Unzip it and copy HOSTS to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, overwriting the one there. According to that site, if you're on Windows 8--which we are--you should exclude that file in Windows Defender, or else it will think that malware has changed the file and will undo your replacement.

[Q] Zombie Verizon bookmarks in stock browser just won't die

One of the first things I wanted to do with my newly S-offed phone was to finally get rid of those pesky Verizon bookmarks. I used Nobloat to delete the com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks apk, and after a reboot that took care of those annoying bookmarks in Chrome, as there's nothing under mobile bookmark folder now.
However, in the stock browser, those three m$#@5ing bookmarks are still there! I've tried clearing the data for the Internet app and rebooting but no luck. I know this is kinda silly, but I'd much appreciate it if you know a way to get rid of them! The stock browser has worked flawlessly for me, and with the thumb control, it's really grown on me.

You have to use SQLite Editor to edit the database file holding the bookmarks list. The database is located at /data/data/com.android.browser/browser2.db, and you want to edit the "bookmarks" table.

Thanks - the path on my phone is actually /data/data/com.android.browser/databases/browser2.db.
I've deleted all entries in the bookmarks table, but when I open up the browser, those three still show up! And I still can't delete them What the hell...

Adaway issues with HTC M8

Hi Guys
I have noticed since upgrading to the latest firmware (4.4.4 build number 3.28.401.7) that adaway is creating issues with other apps. I frequently get error messages stating "unfortunately google service has closed ,,,,"
I could confirm this by disabling adaway then everything is fine
however I prefer to find a solution to this, maybe someone could recommend a better ad blocking app?
many thanks
Unfortunately adaway is the best but there are other that work well if you have xposed framework look for min min guard it works pretty well

i did that and it didn't block ads on the app i was testing
No issues with Adaway and 4.4.4 for me.
Do you have any other issues with Google services? There is an issue with the US carrier AT&T, where Google services will sometimes fail on LTE with Euro based ROMs. It seems to be a problem with the Euro build.prop not playing well with AT&T's network.
Might have nothing to do with your issue, but might be worth trying another ROM at least.

I noticed it only with latest firmware+ROM, so i cannot be sure if it's the new firmware or the new rom
But Adaway is working fine on most apps, except one or two, where the ads are NOT appearing but the app is crashing
I often get the known message "unfortunately google service has closed..." but i also get a similar message stating the name of the app needs to be closed.
Is there a way to allow ads on certain apps through adaway? Maybe i can still use Adway but allow ads to show for apps that are crashing?
thanks

You might try the Whitelist function in Adaway. Press Menu>Your Lists, and there you will see a tab for whitelists. Never used this myself, just know it exists. But it seems like it might do what you want.

Ahh, so the white list is for hosts, not apps.
Go to Menu>Open hosts file. You will need a text editor of some sort installed (I have ES File Explorer installed, and the ES Note Editor opened the file fine - I'm guessing any text editor app will do). You'll find a large list of hosts. Try to find Google on there, and cut and paste the host name to your whitelist.
Again, I've never used the whitelist function before. So I'm just guessing how this works, and that it will help your issue.

it helps me understand how Adaway works but unfortunately nothing with the word GOOGLE in the long list
however i am white listing some french sites which might be the cause of the french app to crash (its an app that lists programme TV)
I used to use AdAway ages ago, but moved onto AdBlock quite a while ago. I don't know if it's intrinsically better than AdBlock, but AdBlock is working fine for me.
AdBlock Plus
It can work without root, but is better with root, which I guess you have.
Adaway simply modifies the local HOSTS file, causing all traffic to ad servers (as defined by the subscription servers) to be redirected to local host. Since there isn't a web server running on the phone by default, the requests just fall on the floor and time out. Some (poorly written) apps get grumbly when they can't contact a web server, so there is an option under preferences for running one on localhost. I'm not clear what it "serves", though.
Personally, unless the app needs network access to function, I find that simply blocking them with iptables (I use Droidwall) is sufficient.

wow i have to admit that this did the job and was properly tested! I run the webserver and the application works, i disable it and the application crashes
The only small issue i have now is that the webserver doesn't run automatically even when i select "start at boot" but that is not a huge problem
I guess i can clear my whitelist now, since the webserver is dealing with this

apps not seeing wifi or data connection when there is one

I am rooted on a pixel 2 XL with magisk v14 and manager 5.4.3. I have twrp 3.1.1 beta 2. I have changed the calling preference on the phone to wifi with an ADB command. Aside from that no other mods come to mind.
I have multiple functioning apps on my phone and am loving root. However, Facebook, Tumblr, Microsoft word, and Microsoft Excel give me messages saying they can't connect to the internet when I open them. This renders Facebook and Tumblr useless. The office programs can work locally. I tried hiding root from Facebook in magisk to no avail. What's going on with these apps? Do I need to change something on my phone or in it's system? Could any particular root apps like adaway be causing this?
Ok, so I was at least smart enough to be able to determine that adaway is not allowing every single one of the apps I mentioned to connect to the internet.
What's the solution here? Is adaway obsolete in 2017? Is the answer to just go download and buy adguard from the playstore?

Adaway is definitely not obsolete. It was removed from the Play Store and will never come back there. There is a thread here on XDA with updates, lots of good help, (and the same questions asked over and over). :good:
Adaway blocks urls / websites but not apps, so you have something else going on. Here is the tutorial to find blocked sites that need to be whitelisted, You can try it.
https://github.com/AdAway/AdAway/wiki/LogDNS
This was tremendously helpful. It did exactly what I wanted. Thank u. Hopefully others see this and it helps them too.

I haven't focused on getting those working yet, but it seems that the word is working. Excel still gives me the connection error. Adaway was the culprit for facebook. I suspect it is for the microsoft office apps too. I just have to addressed them because I will not be using them heavily. If you have an adblocking app please follow the instructions in the link that Pkt_lnt posted. They're very straightforward and helpful. You need to basically turn ad-blocking off, put it in a "scanning mode", use the app you want to for a few minutes so the adblocking app sees it, then the adblocking app will pick up on host file sites that the app uses. You can add these to a "white list." The adblocking will no longer block the app. It's important to note that if other apps use the same host file that you have just whitelisted ads will appear in that app too. White listing a host file is universal and is not done on an in-app basis.
Thank you!

Question [SOLVED] Screenshots Folder Disappears from Gallery App

I use the screenshot feature almost daily and it has been working fine until the other night. Suddenly, when I open the Gallery app, the Screenshots album shows no cover image, just a gray Gallery app icon, and then disappears within a split second. I cannot see or access it at all within the Gallery app, including from "All Albums" (though it is chosen to be on the front page). The folder and all the image files are still on my phone, as I can see them in My Folders and even open them from there in Gallery.
I thought maybe the folder got too many images in it, so I moved them to a different folder, but that didn’t work. I thought maybe the folder got corrupted, so I deleted it, but when I took another screenshot to have the phone create the folder again, it did not fix the problem. There was an update for my phone OS, so I updated, but that didn’t fix the problem.
Thanks for any help!
Try clearing the system cache...
I had the same problem, iirc it was solved during a flash/full wipe.
I also had a problem with every single image showing up... apart from the standard folders like screenshot.
With simple gallery at least, you can exclude folders. Or .nomedia

That's not solving it, it's nuking it. It may reoccur; always best to find to root cause. Only exceptions are after a major firmware upgrade, a boot loop, changes in hidden user settings, malware, etc. Poorly coded 3rd party apps can occasionally permanently alter hidden user settings if so it's important to not reload that app after a factory reset. Regardless back up all critical data now if it isn't...
There maybe a conflicting 3rd party app, try in safe mode. Try clearing the Gallery app data before a reset, maybe other Samsung system apps as well.
Play with it for at least a week or two before doing a factory reset for a minor issue like this.
Do some Google searches... you're likely not the only one that had this problem.

You're welcome. It's always worth a try and can clear bizarre behaviors. Zero risk. I do it about once every month or two as part of routine maintenance or if troubleshooting.
If you don't upgrade or update Android loads can be very long lived. One reason I advocate finding the root cause. This N10+'s last factory reset was in June 2020; still running fast and very stable. Zero malware on this load, still running on Pie.

No apps were disabled using a Package Disabler or adb edits, right?
If global power management is active, turn it off.
Make sure all Samsung system apps have the permissions they need.
It's likely a settings issue... play with it. Androids wuv attention.

I downloaded a couple of other gallery apps to see if they saw the album/folder. One from Google did, but another from Google (the pre-installed one that I'd long-ago disabled) did not, and two other apps did. Only one had the ability to change the app cover pic, but that didn't affect the Gallery app from Samsung. So, I made the decision to Clear Data for the app even though I'd have to set up the albums again and lose everything in the Trash folder (I do sometimes undelete pics, especially, uhm, racy ones to share again before deleting them again ). I didn’t have to sign back in and it kept my sync settings with OneDrive, thankfully. Most importantly, it FIXED the problem with the screenshot folder! I just tried taking a random screenshot to make sure it would still work after and it did. Phew! It was annoying to set my albums on the first page up again (choose them and drag them in the order I want them in/most importance, like Snapseed and Screenshots in the top row with Camera and the Camera album from my previous phone) and lose the Trash, but worth it.
Thank you for the help!

Yay! Now you feel like an ace So much more rewarding than arbitrary doing a factory reset.
The question remains what caused it to happen.
If it reoccures try to remember the events before it manifested itself that may have caused it.
A scripted malware jpeg from a download can cause hell, damaging other files in the same folder. Deleting that jpeg will stop the damage. The trigger is opening the jpeg to view it; it will then damage other files in that folder. Some can be repaired easily if it just changed the file type suffix, other files have deeper damage. I hate these critters.
All downloads* especially jpegs and pngs should go to the download folder first. Open them there first before transferring anywhere else. Look for changes in other files in that folder.
May be the only way to spot these vermin. Antivirus apps may not ID them...
*Scan with online Virustotal any file that may warrant it before installing or moving out of the download folder. If there's any doubt, delete the file. Downloads are a known malware vector... delete any files you didn't download. Police the download folder daily. Scanning with Malwarebytes may tag infected files there too.

I only have screenshots in that folder, only sometimes moving some out to organize them (ex. relationship memes from Instagram in one folder, regular memes stay in the screenshots folder, random things I need to save to refer to go in a random-screenshots folder, house ideas go in another folder, etc.), never moving anything into it. Downloads are in the Downloads (with or without the "s", I forget which is the current one) folder, may or may not be moved or deleted depending on their use. I have an anti-virus app that runs all the time, tells me when anything installs (because it scans it), etc.

You really don't need antivirus running real time if using Android 9 or higher... unless you do stupid things. Android 9 is very robust and secure if used right. I run a logging firewall always, this is more useful than antivirus. Any app that doesn't require internet access to work is blocked.
I scan every couple weeks with free Malwarebytes and Trojan Scanner, that's it. In 3 years Malwarebytes tagged one trojan preloader that slipped through the Samsung browser. I would've spotted it anyway as I police the download folder almost daily. Almost all malware is user installed or downloaded.

That's just how it works, it runs all the time. Been using it for many years. Comes with my plan for my PC anti-virus program. Also has features to find a lost/stolen phone with a pic if someone tries to use it, tells you what apps have certain features like ads or access, etc. And tells you if anything installs (like, did you know Facebook updates itself multiple times a day?).

It does scan apps before installing them if they are not from trusted sources, and scans updates/new installs as well. You can also manually scan all apps and all files. Among other features (which apps use which permissions, etc.). Definitely not slowing my phone at all. Even auto-updates downloading and installing doesn't slow this phone, unlike my previous one. I don't even notice anything installed until I see the anti-virus notification that an app updated, so was scanned.
The Screenshots album disappeared again this afternoon, ugh! At least I know how to fix it, but spending time to choose the front-page albums and put them in the order I need them in isn't something I wanted to do again. I don't know if the size of the folder/album is what is causing the problem or not, so I moved all but 32 of the latest screenshot images to a new album. Here's hoping it won't happen again! (And yes, I did a scan of my phone after, and no viruses.)

Duration of unused files in My Files is set to what? Double all Gallery settings.
Virustotal gives better oversight to make an informed decision. OTA upgrades and auto updates can and do break things. Samsung's will run well without them.
Just because a virus scan finds nothing it doesn't mean there is nothing. If it's an undetected scripted jpeg it's going to be a whole lot of "fun".
