So as a new android user (switching from apple) i realize how much i've been missing out on the beauty of Android devices. So that being said i am so happy to be here and posting about this new friggin device!
SO heres the problem that i realize: Most micro SD card does not work with this new device!! I've tried installing it in the note 10.1 and realize that in the end it cant read. However, if i put it in my s4, it does read and store data. So i emailed samsung personally and they basically said, "as of right now, there arent any micro sd card that is compatible with the note 10.1 2014. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone used a micro sd card with their device yet? If so what brand? I have a kingston.
I am using 32gb Kingston with no issues. If it is recognized by your phone, try formatting it inside the phone then put it in the tablet. Most likely the card is not formatted properly.

Yeah it's most likely this.
I'm using a 64GB SanDisk Class 10 card formatted to exfat.
Plenty of help on the web if you are unsure of what your doing.
Good luck!
i tried a brand new PNY 64GB formatted to exFAT. it worked fine until it die- two friggin days!
now i'm using my back up 64GB sandisk. it's working fine so far, exFat too. had one incident that made me think that this may be a dud too, or that the 2014 may be killing my disks. i'll have to keep an eye out.
There are way too many reports of this for there not to be a problem! I myself had a card that worked great in my old Note 10.1 and my cell phone but had to be formatted for the 2014 edition. Why? No reason other than something just ain't right somewhere!

That's what I'm using too, though Kingston makes good memory, and I've had good luck with other companies as well, like Patriot and Trend Micro.

Have not seen way too many reports of this problem with this particular device. The problems lie in the the memory cards not the device. Flash memory is notorious for just flat out dying or not working in certain devices. Sandisk or Samsung are the top choices for broad compatibility, hence the fact that their prices are usually higher. Probably due to more R&D and testing. I just swapped my 64gb Sandisk for the Kingston 32gb with no issues. I had the 64gb in an Acer W3-810 Windows Tablet.

My bad. There is only this thread and another thread on the next page. It is kinda suspicious that my 64GB card as well as others here works fine in my other tablet and phone but just won't work in my new 2014. Call it what you want but to me that's a lack of plug and play!
For everyone without any issues of course we are just making a mountain out of a molehill but for us FEW sitting here with a 64gb micro card that won't work consistently this is a fail!
So yes I surrendered and picked up a 32gb card and it works flawlessly.
i have a 16GB patriot Class 4 that i pulled out of my Nook Color (and formatted on my computer) i have had no issues using this.
one thing i did notice, is that the sd slot in the galaxy note 10.1 is pretty deep, i cant get the card in without assistance, usually from a pen or key that happens to be nearby.

Do not make this in to something personal. Please read what I typed. I was not trying to deny there is a problem but let people know where the problem comes from. One android device works with a card but it will not work with another. It is more than likely the card. You made it sound like it is Samsung's fault. They cannot test every card with every device ever made. People should be asking for help from their card manufacturer. My original 64gb died right out of the box and Sandisk replaced it.
I'm sorry if this came across as personal. I apologize for that. We just disagree and that's fine. You think it is the card even though it works great in 3 other devices, my laptop with the insert, my phone, and my old Note 10.1 and I think it's the 2014 edition because it doesn't work in it. To me if it was the card it would give me some sort of trouble in the other devices.
But to each his/her own.
Maybe its how the card is formatted?

I may be mistaken but I believe I have mentioned that I formatted the card while using the Note 2014. I also formatted it on my PC. It's no biggie anymore since I have a 32 gb installed that works great. I'm just going to wait till another update and try it again. I believe it's going to work at some point.

32gb class 10 Samsung micro sd card works perfectly in my Note 10.1 2014, TAB3 8.0, GS4 & GS3
I'm having intermittent failures with my card also. I took my 32 gb Lexar out of my Transformer Prime and it wasn't recognized by the Note. I formatted it, it was fine for a few days, now it's telling me that the card is blank and/or unreadable. I formatted it again using the SD Formatter. I'm adding music to the card now and I'll be keeping an eye on it. I'll buy a Sandisk if this continues. I'm not at a risk of losing data, so I can experiment a little.
Don't cheap out on crappy low end cards, and you *should be fine. I have a combination of 6 Samsung phones & tablets all using one of the two cards listed below. Have never had a single issue, and a few of the devices have been using the same card for well over a year.
SanDisk SDSDQUA-064G-U46A Ultra 64 GB microSDXC (UHS-1) Class 10
Samsung Electronics 32GB microSDHC Extreme Speed (UHS-1) Class 10
The 64GB Sandisk Ultra is currently formatted ExFAT, and has been working just fine for almost 2 weeks now in my Note 10.1 (2014 ed).
* There is always a chance with failure, as with any electronic component, but good storage cards are worth their price.

Kingston, Transcend, Lexar, AData, G.Skill and Patriot are all good brands as well.
Same issue as above posters, I have a SanDisk ultra 64gb. After mucking around trying to get the same card that worked perfectly in my original. 10.1.
Solution : I backed the card contents up on my pc and then formatted the card in the original 10.1 before checking that I could write a new directory on the card using the 2014 edition.
Seems to work so far, hope this helps you guys (who still have the original 10.1 as well).
I have a 64GB Patriot class 10, No issues. Thought I would chime in.

Anyone try the Samsung 64GB micro SDXC? I can only guess all Samsung Micro SD's will work fine.
I thought I would start a thread on which Micro SD cards were recommended vs. those that fail early or are simply not compatible. I saw a thread earlier that appeared to show that some cards (and sizes) were better than others.
I can report that the Samsung 64GB card (says Class 10, HC, 24MB Read, 7MB Write) does NOT work in this tablet. I was able to use it just fine in my Note 2, and a laptop. However, the card doesn't work properly in my 2014 Note 10.1. An older Pansonic 16GB MicroSD card worked just fine however. I've tried formatting it in other machines, and it's still a bust. Currently, these cards are selling like wildfire on Ebay for $30.
So, what DOES work for a 64GB card? Any help is appreciated by myself and I'm sure a lot of others reading this forum.
Thanks in advance.
I have got a SanDisk 64GB card in mine. Also got the same type in My Note 3.
The SD card issue seems a bit odd, both of my cards were also fine in my older Note 10.1 and the Note 2. I've never had a problem with either of them
Samsung 64GB works just fine.
I have a 64GB Samsung MicroSD and it works just fine, haven't had to do anything to it, worked right out of the box.
Its a Samsung 64GB Class 10, UHS-1, Grade 1, 70MB/s MicroSDXC Pro Memory Card
I always buy memory cards directly from Amazon because there are a lot of fakes out there, so I know for sure this is a genuine product.
This is the exact one I purchased

i've tested my 64GB sandisk on my gn8 for a week now with no issues at all. one day after being put back in the gn10.1 2014 and it's acting up again. files, fail to delete, wrong size reported, inaccessable, etc. the 32GB sandisk works fine. both are uhs-1 formated exfat. take it out without reformatting and it works fine on my gn8 and pc. put it back on the gn10.1 and it won't mount without a reboot.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. After some research I discovered that this was indeed a fake card I ordered from Ebay. Looks like this is a common problem as the packaging is *almost* perfect and you really can't tell the difference without some serious research. Luckily, the seller refunded the full amount back to me. Based on your feedback here I've ordered a SanDisk Ultra from Amazon.
Thanks for the help and & Happy Thanksgiving!

A really good way to check them is to simply try to fill it up. Only 4G of data will be saved and readable, whereas the other 60GB is corrupt.

It's sad that a lot of people get duped into buying fakes. But sites like ebay don't/can't do anything about it.
Memory cards/Usbs should only be bought from reputable sellers only (Amazon, Currys, Play.com etc) as there are wayyyy too many fakes out there.
I'm currently using a Transcend 64GB SDXC UH-1 Class 10 card which was formatted using the tablet.
It works fine except for one annoying problem. When transferring large, singe or multiple files, say 1.5GB+ HD movie or a huge amount of photos, from internal to external storage, the device would freeze. After it starts up again i notice that i can no longer access my SD card even though the device says it's still mounted. The only way i can fix this is by removing and reinserting the card or rebooting the device. Although there's no problem transferring files from a computer straight to the SD card.
Anybody encountered a problem like this? Is there anyway to fix it?

Yes, I'm having the same issue. Except the SD card will randomly lose the files even though it still shows the card is still mounted. Just recently I was watching a movie from the sd card and this happened.
I am using a SanDisk that was being used in my note 2 for the past year (never had problems with it before).
This is especially frustrating when trying to sync files with Plex.

Same for me
I know I'll sound like a noob, but my 32gb Samsung micro sd card just doesn't seem to work on galaxy note 10.1 2014, yet it worked perfectly fine on my previous note. Would i have to format the card on my computer? A little bit annoying since I don't have a reader for it.
My Sandisk does not work
I have a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s SDSDQUA-064G-U46A that has a lot of problems working in my GN 10.1-14. It has worked fine for a year in the old Note 10.1. The New Note would not even format it. Formatted it in my Galaxy S4, and it kind of works. Often it simply reports no files, although it will report in Settings the correct size and space available. Sometimes I have to reboot several times for the card to work. then sometimes I will try to open a file and get an I/O error. Then sometimes random reboots, especially if I try to unmount it.
I use a Samsung Pro 64GB microSDXC (UHS-1) Class 10 card (MB-MGCGB/AM) reformatted to FAT32. Works great. I've been using the same type card on my LG Optimus G for almost 8 months 100% problem free (also formatted to FAT32). I did have issues with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB in that same phone that used to dismount itself all the time and I know others that have had issues with SanDisk cards in GoPros as well.
ok, so which one of these sandisk ultra microsd cards will work in the 10.1 2014 edition, and what is the difference between them?

I just installed a new 128gb microsd (sandisk ultra), and for some reason it keeps unmounting then remounting a few seconds later. I tried formatting it but theres no option in the settings. Is there any way to fix this? Is it only an issue with cards > 64 gb?
I face the same problem with 64gb SDxc sundisk card!!!!!
Any help....... please
I had 64gb microsd fitted last few months, a Sandisk card. No problems at all. Recently fitted a Sandisk 128gb card from Amazon.
Had constant unmounting problem, reformatted to fat32, and still unmounting virtually every hour. Draining battery fast as well.
So, fitted 64gb Sandisk again, problem solved, it doesnt like 128gb card. 128card now in a Win10 tablet and working fine !
Although ASUS only qualifies 64GB MicroSD as max, you should be able to use up to 128GB as long as it is formatted as FAT32. Some users had their's work fine with this size.
Zenfone 2 supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC, with speed class up to Class 10

Thanks for reply Asus_USA. It could be a compatibility issue, the card I tried was a Sandisk Ultra SDXC class10 (newest version) supplied by Amazon.
Has anyone else had any success with this microsd in the Zenfone 2, I have the 32gb, 4gb ram version.
I have a similar issue. Read the forums and it is obvious many asus ZenFone owners are experiencing this problem. Can't asus just admit the problem and fix it and announce the fix? Or is it a bigger issue that asus will not publicly admit to?
I thought I would chime in as I too am having the same issue with my phone. I put an sandisk 128gb sdxc card in my phone when I purchased the phone it worked fine until New Years Day when I got an OTA. Since that OTA, the 128gb card will keep mounting and un mounting itself. I put an 64gb card in and for a whole day, did not unmount once. Called amazon to replace the card thinking it was the card, amazon gladly replaced the card, inserted the card and it is still unmounting-remounting. Like I said before it worked for 1 month straight with no issues in Dec. before the OTA, but after the OTA, its intermittently unmounting-mounting. Thought Id chime in since ASUS was responding and noticing others having the same issue. Obviously its a software issue with ASUS.
There are already so many issues regarding to sandisk sd card on Zenfone, I used to have the same problem, then I replaced my sandisk with samsung, problem solved.

Thanks for your help! I kind of figured it was the sandisk card because I put a little 64GB sandisk card in and the phone wont even recognize that card at all. I put a sony 64GB in and it held perfectly for 1 day, no unmounts. Off to Amazon to purchase a Sony 128GB!

My Adata 64gb card did that on the previous update, and more often at times. With the latest, the problem ceased.

Have you tried formatting it to fat32 and remounting it?
From what I've tested, exfat has given me issues. But I'm on a custom ROM (CM 12.1 based), so YMMV.
If you're rooted you can try Aparted on the Play Store and not bother with the PC route. Just make sure you know what you're doing!

That latest update definetly caused issues with SD cards not over 64Gb but with specific manufacturers. Of course ASUS will not assist in this nor claim responsibility as this was in improvement update. Even though it was quite large for improvements. I would like to see what they say as even some 64GBs cards are not working either and they approve all cards upto 64GBs. Unfortunatley, your going to have to switch card manufacturers to get your card to work. I put a Sony card in and it works fine now. I could'nt get a 64GB sandisk to even recognize let alone the 128GB mounting/unmounting. Good Luck!
Having the same problem with 128 SanDisk (also class 10).
Looks like I'll have to buy a new card - am I better off with 64 GB or changing companies?
Yes.. it's a know problem, without a concrete solution... also me I purchased first.. read after... so I sold and I bought a kingston 128gb and since then, it works flawlessly (except it's 3gb less, but I seriously actually don't mind )

I have both the 32gb phone and the 64gb phone. I have used exfat formatted sd cards, both 64 and 128gb, in both with no problems. I haven't tried the 200gb as I use that in my tablet but it is the ONLY Sandisk I have... All other cards are Samsung or the 128gb Lexmark. I have these as Sandisk had problems in other phones too... Theoretically we should be able to use up to a 2tb sd card, if one existed. As long as it says sdxc or sdhc on it it will work.
sdhc is 4 to 32gb and 64+ is sdxc format. 128gb is sdxc...
For people prefering a specific model name: I just inserted a SanDisk Ultra 128GB (one of the current black ones: SDSQUNC-128G-GZFMA), formatted it in the tablet and am now having over 100GB space (what should I ever put on there...? )

I have music, videos and work files not to mention pictures... I have around 4 - 5 gb free most of the time but find it VERY easy to fill up.
I also have rom images too and a backup of my device so it is easy to fix if things go wrong...
I use a Samsung Evo 128gb sd card.
On a side note, if you do get Kingston cards be aware that at one time there were "128gb sd cards" floating around but they said sdhc on them, NOT sdxc. These are fakes... As I said above, anything 64gb and above are sdxc...
It does work!
I just tested, bought a kingston micro sd and the tablet recognized it without a problem
I will be using it in a note 3 though
SO apparently The SD card i bought (EMTEC MICRO SD XC 64GB) ISNT COMPATIBLE FOR BEING ABLE TO FORMAT AS INTERNAL CAUSE ITS NOT FAST ENOUGH WHICH DOESNT MAKE SENSE CAUSE IT STATED ON THE PACKAGE ONE OF THE FASTEST SD CARD. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO LOOK FOR APPARENTLY CAUSE I GUESS I CANT GO BY WHAT THE PACKAGE ON THE SD CARD STATES. THANKS EVERYONE IN ADVANCE

I've recently been researching into this. Consensus is either the Samsung Evo Plus or SandDisk Ultra. Both priced about the same.
128GB for around £35, 64GB around £17.
Also make sure it's class 10.
New SDcards will have A classes, they are meant for installing apps on them, meaning they are optimized for smartphone usage. SanDisk already announced one in A1 class.
