Nano gapps gives you maximum functionality without installing all the apps
Pico will give you the minimum functionality - things like OK Google and some other things won't work
Gmaps & Gmail you can just install from playstore - no need to select a gapps package that installs these to system especially when you update them it will duplicate the app (the original system app & the update is installed in data)

[Q] Google Addons

What exactly is Google Addons?
The market
Sent from my Vision using XDA Premium App
The Google Apps? You need them so you're apps function correctly, gmail, market, ect. Needed to be flashed up your first installation of a gingerbread rom. If you mean when you first boot up your phone, just extra apps you can install if you want.
The Google Apps addon is a flashable ZIP which contains the files for the Android Market, Google Talk, Google Sync, and other back-end files and libraries needed for Google applications from the Market, like those that allow for C2DM (push notifications).
They aren't included in CyanogenMod and other similar ROMs due to Google throwing a hissy fit back in CM4, saying that CM could be used to port those applications to devices which don't come with Google Apps, despite the fact that there are no such devices currently in development, let alone back then.
Ok so if I'm installing any AOSP ROM's then I need to install the Google Addon's as well. But this is not needed with any Sense ROM's. Thanks all!

[Unofficial] Lean GApps for PA

Notice: By flashing these GApps, you hereby revoke your right to complain in the Paranoid Android thread about bugs!
What I mean by this is: Don't go bothering Moles or any of the PA team about some sort of app/rom functionality being broken because you flashed this GApps package which deleted an app that you needed or caused ROM to crash.
This package goes against PA philosophy of remaining Stock google. Read This WHOLE POST FIRST!!
Warning: This package deletes apps that might be important to certain users! For example: maps, exchange services, live wall papers, etc. Read the list below for more details.
FAQ in second post
Section 1.
Ok, so the purpose of this post is to share a GApps that I put together for myself. Please READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE even considering flashing this.
What this GApps package does:
1. It flashes the bare minimum (what I consider bare minimum) of system apps to keep the ROM functioning as I like it.
2. The update script is modified to delete other apps that are included in the PA ROM package that I do not use. (notice I said "I", as in myself)
Do not Flash if you meet any of these descriptions:
1. You do not want a lean rom
2. You don't agree with leaning out roms
3. This offends you somehow
4. You are unsure about what you are doing
5. If you have never opened a zip package and looked at its contents or read an updater_script
Section 2.
These are the list of apps are NOT INCLUDED in this package that you would normally get from PA FULL GApps at goo.im:
Books.apk <--- google books
Currents.apk
GenieWidget.apk <--- Google weather widget
GoogleEars.apk <---- identifies songs by listening to them. I use soundhound, so I don't use google ears.
GoogleEarth.apk
Magazines.apk <---- Google magazines
PlusOne.apk <--- Google+ social network
Thinkfree.apk <-- stock office app
Videos.apk ,<--- google movies
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk
Maps.apk <--- you can download from market or just restore with titanium. OR insert it into the lean gapps package yourself
Street.apk
Like I said above, this GApps package goes a step further and deletes certain apps from the /system/app/.
Here is a section of the script that deletes apps so you can and MUST REVIEW BEFORE flashing:
delete("/system/app/HoloSpiralWallpaper.apk","/system/app/LiveWallpapers.apk");
delete("/system/app/MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk","/system/app/OpenWnn.apk");
delete("/system/app/ParanoidWallpapers.apk","/system/app/PhaseBeam.apk","/system/app/VisualizationWallpapers.apk");
delete("/system/app/Thinkfree.apk","/system/app/Galaxy4.apk","/system/app/PinyinIME.apk","/system/app/Exchange2.apk");
delete("/system/app/Books.apk","/system/app/Currents.apk","/system/app/Magazines.apk","/system/app/Videos.apk");
delete("/system/app/GenieWidget.apk","/system/app/GoogleEarth.apk","/system/app/GoogleEars.apk");
If there is an app missing that you must have, then you can fix it. Pull the app from the ROM package or FULL PA GApps package and insert it into the Lean GApps package in system/app/. (I shouldn't have to explain how to do this if you're planning on flashing this GApps, but whatever.) Or if the script deletes an app that you don't want deleted, then just erase that part from the script.
If you don't know how to do this, then Google it or find one of many helpful tutorials here on the wonderful XDA forums!
Section3 .
Please refrain from asking the same questions over and over. Read this whole post!
Read the entire updater_script! It's a good practice to get into for flashing any zip.
I am NOT taking requests. If you want something added or taken away, then do the work yourself please. It takes only 5 minutes. I will try to fix any bugs and update whenever I get the time.

Coming soon: Power user Lean GApps. (secure settings, titanium, tasker, greenify, etc.) <-- all lite versions of the apps (support devs by purchasing pro keys)
FAQ:
1. Why have you removed Maps, wallpapers, (insert app here) ?
Because as I explained in the first post, I do not use those apps. I do however use Google maps, but I just restore it from my titanium backup when I need it and then uninstall. I hate how maps runs in the background. Just my preference. If you want maps, just download from the market or put the apk in the zip.
2. Can you please add/delete an app to the package?
No. I already posted in the first post that I would not. If the package doesn't suit you, then customize it yourself
3. Does this package break anything?
As far as I can tell from my own testing, it does not break anything that I use. Keep in mind, there is no Exchange service app, so if you need that for work or whatever, then restore from your titanium backup or add it to the zip.
4. Will this Gapps package work for another ROM besides Paranoid Android?
It should, I don't see why it wouldn't. Unless your ROM requires one of the apps in a typical full GApps package. If in doubt, do your own research. Don't blame me if it messes something up.
reserved 2.
Nice and lean man. I've been meaning to do something like this for myself but the PC is down and its not so fun unzipping and rezipping from Root explorer.

Is it not just easier to freeze/defrost apps you don't use but may want occasionally?

I never use the apps I delete. Freezing is just a bandaid fix to me. Of the apps I do use occasionally, like maps, I converted to a user app and have greenify hibernate it.

[Q] PA without gapps possible?

I am planning to flash PA to my old Nexus 7 (Tilapia) without gapps. The idea is to find out whether an Android device can be decoupled from Google. And whether such a device can still be used in a normal day to day scenario for surfing, mail, contacts ...
There are many apps out there which could be used instead of the apps in the gapps package (i.e. play store => f-droid, mail => k-9, chrome => firefox, maps => navit / OsmAnd, ...). And with a simple raspberry pi and owncloud also some of the google services can be replaced by an self hosted solution.
What are your thoughts on this:
- Is this possible in principle with PA?
- What should I watch out for when setting up the N7?
- Any other suggestions?
Of course you can do it. The ROM is functional without gapps
Sent from my Nexus 5
I don't know what it is you should be watching out for when trying your experiment but I believe it can be done. You'll have to use a 3rd party app store to download the apps you want to replace the stock apps with (k-9, etc). But once you start doing that, what's the point?
To prove you don't need to use Google Branded apps? Just root your device, install Titanium and freeze all the google apps. Same thing, right?
Just flashed PA without gapps. Added some great Apps from f-droid. Everything works great. Next steps will be to Conect to a dropbox server.
Currently I am getting a notification that a new system update, a new gapps version is available. Can I somehow disable in PA the check for new gapp versions?
Thanks!

Thanks Pirateghost, just found it.
I am currently running into two issues:
I installed the "920 text editor" via f-droid. But when I try to start it the app it opens for a nearly a second and then a error window says >"920 Text Editor" wurde beendet.< (I am using a German system; translation something like >"920 Text Editor" was stopped.<). Is there a log file which could provide more information why this application was not able to start?
I paired my German bluetooth keyboard (QWERTZ layout) with the nexus. But unlike to stock Android in PA they keyboard is mapped with the American layout (QWERTY layout). So some keys are not inline with the labelling. I did not find a way to change the used layout in the settings. Any ideas?

Navigation app for S4 mini

Hi everyone,
I am running the last stable release of cyanogenmod 13.0 on my s4 mini (added the 2016-04-18). I tried to install a navigation app to localize me and potentially use a route planner.
Here is my issue: I downloaded and installed the google maps app using an APK downloader, but this app doesn't work, as it seems to depend on the google play services package. So I tried with other navigation apps from the F-Droid repository: Navit and ZANavi (they are quite similar). But these apps don't work either.
Here is a solution that I found to make them work: I installed the opengapps (http://opengapps.org/). This makes google maps work (it is included), as well as Navit and ZANavi. But the opengapps package comes with a bunch of other app that I don't need and I would like to avoid installing it.
So here is my question: is there a navigation app that I can install on my device, without having to install the google apps package to make them work ? Or by installing a small additional package (free or proprietary) ?
Thanks in advance for you help !

All Google apps should update themselves via play store. As for Google phone, can you find it on play store?
Are you talking about that one?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.dialer
the version seems to be 2.5.12_rc9
Anyway it's only for Nexus phone as all other phone use their own dialer and especially all CM rom (that's why you have to add the gapps afterward but that won't replace the dialer).
For other gapps, simply install the biggest gapps package, some google apps can only be updated, that mean if it's not pre installed, you can't install it (the purpose of the gapps). gapps micro lack a lot of google apps so use stock or super.
Edit : ok, simply use the google apps package called "stock"
https://github.com/opengapps/opengapps/wiki/Stock-Package
it will replace the dialer, the dialer you want.
have google apps under cm, but dont update the play. if i download from play than will duplicated.
am i right, that just from recovery have to install again the latest open gapps, and will up to date the phone, calculator, all google apps.
gapps will be considered as system app, the version from google play will act as an update.
