But if the devices supplies power to connected devices, there must be a way to get OTG fully working.
For example other phones without OTG dont supplie power. So there must be a solution

When I get home I'll solder an OTG cable with external power, I'll see what will happen (I'll solder it because I don't have a cable that offers external power) I thought the issue was data transfer, not power. Guess we will find out soon...
I'll update you all in a bit

I also remember an app that allowed OTG on non-supported device back in the KitKat days, I'll try and find the app and see what it does on android 7...

Today i bought a USB OTG cable.i am running full stock 4.0.4 . when i plug the USB OTG cable to my phone & then to my Mouse it does not work.all i see is my mouse led lights up for about 5 seconds then turns off.the same thing happens with my keyboard also.
My question is -
--> Do i have to make some settings changes ?
--> Install some kind of application ?
--> or is there something wrong with my OTG cable & i need to replace it ?
dude first install the usb modules on your phone...
go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588979
I installed the Modules but still nothing happens.it's the same.
Update : when i insert the USB cable of mouse half way then the mouse's LED lights up & stays but nothing happens the the mouse does not work.no cursor appears.
may b there is a prob with my OTG cable . i am thinking of changing it tomorrow.
thanks for the support.
did u install that app? did u install modules for stock kernel? did u try connecting pen drive?
yes i did all of those things . when i plug in the pen drive it's led lights up but in cell phone i don't get any indication of any new device found. . .
Stock ROM doesn't need any modules. I use Nokia N8's OTG cable, and it works fine. The mouse cursor comes immediately after connecting the mouse. The cable may be a faulty one or, it is for Samsung phones only, and since Samsung uses different wiring, so it is not working properly I guess..

Yes i got the problem Fixed .turns out it was a faulty Cable.got it replaced & now its working fine..
Thanks for all your support ...
I was wondering if any of you have the same problem as me.
Just bought the dk20 ion dock and pluged my ion jelly bean to it and:
- first nothing happens wen pluging it in, if mouse and power cord connected it charges and cursor appears.
- doesnt autodetect dock
- hdmi (for me most important) does not work..
- pendrives and/or flashdrives are detected ok
so the dock is as for now a nice charger and that is about it!
let me know if any of you are having the same issues, and lets see if wll together we can do something about it.
I have had zero issues with mine. USB capability seems to be hit and miss. My cheap mouse and old Logitech keyboard work fine. I could not get a Logitech k400 to work though. As for getting hdmi to work make sure the cord is plugged in and tv on. Device screen should be off while plugging it in. Once in turn on, unlock, and it should show up. Then you can pull the notifications down and hit tv launcher. You can also set it with smart connect to auto launch.

Are you using Jelly Bean on your Ion as me?
I have followed your steps and nothing, pluged the HDMI cable into the dock and turned the TV on with the HDMI 1 channel on, with phone screen off connected it (with only the HDMI cable plugged in) and nothing happens. If I use Smart Connect App, when choosing dock it does detect the dock, but the TV mode does absolutely nothing.
Im beggining to think it could be the HDMI port on my Dock that doesn't work properly, I did buy it on ebay.. so you never know!
Let me know what you think, the whole idea was using my Ion as an additional basic PC, but without hdmi it's not going to be to useful..
Yes I am running the Rogers jelly Bean. It is very easy to disturb the hdmi connection when you mess with the dock. I am using a hdmi to micro hdmi adapter. I plug my phone in then hit the power button and unlock it. It then recognizes and shows on the tv. If you pull down the notifications you have options for tv launcher and also hdmi settings.
One thing you can try is connect the hdmi to your device directly and see if it works.

I think it's the HDMI port on my dock then, because it just doesn't even notice the HDMI connection, I'm using the cable that came with the phone, I have a factory unlocked lt28h Ion that came with all the extras, hdmi micro to hdmi cable and smart tags..
I may try doing a downgrade to see if it works ok on the ICS, I have read it had less problems with that version of Android.
Once again thanks ever so much for your help and interested, ill keep the post updated just in case other people are having the same problem as me.
Pd: The HDMI port on my device works fine directly to TV, the only thing is I have to adjust the screen dimensions to 95% now I'm on Jelly Bean so the picture is ok on the TV.

Finally the new Dock arrived yesterday and guess what.. It works like a charm!!!
So in the end the problem was a faulty HDMI port, the seller was kind enough to send a new one for free.
Thank you all for your help, as compensation ill leave a few discoveries I have made so you can use your ion as a spare PC.
For ROOTED devices i strongly recommend Screen Standby App, that lets you turn the screen of whilst the phone is docket and uses 1/3 of the battery, as well as not bothering you whilst watching a film or other tasks.. it has many other functions to.
Another great app is Paragon, which lets you connect external usb and hard drives in any format, specially NTFS, please note that for usb and hard drives to work the power cord has to be connected, due to the drain of power, as device warns.
That's it for now, hope this info is useful for other Dock owners and users!
Awesome I will try this out. Glad you got a good dock to work with. If you come up with other interesting stuff let us know.

NTFS is standard format for Windows and for it to work in Android it needs to be fat32 format. Don't think there is much of a difference other than just the type of format. So you would right click your drive you want to use and format it as fat32. Then put what you want to on it and plug it into the dock. The phone should be able to see it at that point but you will need a file browser to access the drive. I will try it in a bit to confirm it works but from what I have read on the Z forum it should work fine.

Can I change the format without literally format my ext HDD?
XDAプレミアムを使 用して私のSK17iのか ら送られてきた
No. You will have to backup or move what is on the drive and do a format. Formatting wipes the drive and no way around that I know of.
The problem is Android is not programmed to read NTFS format which is a windows format.
But if you install PARAGON app it makes the OS able to read NTFS drives without having to format your hard drive to fat32.
I also have a WD 500GB Hard Drive and faced the same problem, there is other programs but paragon seems to be the one that works best.
Hope that helps, regards and good fortune!

I would prefer NOT to have to use BL mode, as I have some files I need in the system directory.
The ultimate goal is to be able to screencast (androidscreencast.jnlp) on my pc and use the mouse and keyboard to navigate my phone (I am rooted). To do this, I need USB debugging enabled...
So any help guys?
USB OTG cable and a Y-Cable for USB host power should allow you to navigate through your phone while also using MHL/Slimport HDMI (if the screen isn't visible).
Also...
Digitizer = glass above display that interprets touch.

Yeah, I dont have an MHL adapter, room mate stole it when he moved out. And cant really afford anything right now.The part of the screen thats cracked is very small but none of the OLED panel works... I can feel the vibration when I touch the screen (I had feedback enabled), so its still picking up touch... right now the only option is through the pc.
My rk3188 jy unit has a weird 3g problem. If i drive 10km or 300km my 3g conection works as it should(perfect). If it looses the signal it automaticly reconects when the signal becomes availible. But if i park in a garage where i dont have a signal and i wake up the unit from sleep i dont get any signal until i do a full reboot.
Has anyone have the same problem and knows how to solve this?
Instead of doing af full reboot try turning Wifi off and then on in the settings menu. That works for me if the 3G connection is lost. Disconnecting af reconnecting the 3G Dongle also does the trick but can be impossible if the dongle is behind the dash board

I have similar problem but on boot. Sometimes the dongle is there and connects and sometimes not.
If i reboot immediately then it connects ok.
(once connected its rock solid and is always there but its hit and miss whether android sees its at boot up time)
Anyone else?
Is there a script to prolong checking for the dongle or something?

I believe that the problem is a USB power problem. It should help WiFi off and on again, I can not just test only. Sorry for my google-englisch [emoji1]
There is a USB cable y for external hard drives. Take the power from two USB ports. Maybe that helps even ...

Ive got it plugged into a Y cable now and using both rear ports. (No difference)...I dont think its a power issue since ones its running it never drops out.
Only seems an issue on initial boot.
Ill try front USB port and let you know if any difference
(Not really a solution though since who wants **** hanging out the front)

Could you try connecting the Y-cable to an external USB power supply and se if that helps. I dont think using 2 USB ports on the unit would make any difference if its the USB Power from the unit thats not strong enough.

Ok front USB port makes no difference.
Apps to turn off 3g data and back on make no difference.
Its seems to be, if the dongle isnt seen at start up then its not usable until you reboot or physically disconnect dongle and re-insert.

Hi guys,
my Micro SD/USB-C adapter has arrived and I was planning on testing it through the Gear VR. Sadly though, even just plugging it directly in to the phone jumps the phone to Charging mode! I've found a number of apps that will turn it back to MTP access but they all require ROOT access. I'm not prepared to root my phone as a number of my banking apps disable themselves if they detect this. (And i'll also be returning my phone to Samsung in a week or two for a less "explody" version)
Any ideas on how to get the port to default to MTP without rooting?
Thanks!
I am sorry, what the heck are you talking about?

THIS!
When I plug it in, Android says "Charging" even though it's clearly NOT a charger and is supply NO current. I want to be able to browse the files on the MicroSD card.
I plugged my micro-usb micro-SDHC OTG adapter into the micro-usb to USB-C adapter and then plugged it in. It doesn't do anything. It worked just fine on S6 Edge. But Note 7 - nothing.
Does Note 7 even support USB-OTG?

Now, I got it to work. Check this out.
I plugged in Micro-SDHC to Micro-USB OTG adapter with the memory card into a Micro-USB to USB-A adapater which came with the card adapter (it's OTG compatible.) Then plugged in this monstrosity into the Samsung USB-A to USB-C adapter which came with the phone. This adapter is apparently also OTG compatible. Then I plugged it into the phone and it worked!
It appears that the tiny adapter that came with the phone, the Micro-USB to USB-C adapter is not OTG compatible.
Now, here's how to make it work. When you plug it in and it lights up, swipe down to open notification panel and click on USB charging notification. From there you should be able to change it from charging to MTP. The sd card will be under /storage/[name] where [name] is the name of the card.

That's the part that doesn't work for me. I select MTP and it immediately jumps back to Charging without any interaction from me. In addition, once I plug it in to a Gear VR I won't be able to swipe to change the setting so, I need to force the default (I use wireless charging anyway) to be MTP.

It works in that YT video and it just worked for me. Something is broken with either your phone or this adapter. Or maybe your sd card isn't formatted properly?

There are differences. You and the video have gone through one or more adapters, mine is a straight MicroSD card reader with a USB C connector. I'm wondering if there is something special that the reader has to do to be OTG?
edit: In addition, as I said, how do you "swipe" the notification when it's plugged in to the Gear VR? Even with an OTG adapter, I still need to be able to set the default to MTP.
edit 2:
THIS is the exact item i purchased.
