Just received the Moto G5 (UK unbranded version: Single Sim, 2GB RAM, Snapdragon 430).
Its unlocked, running LineageOS (7.1.2). Very happy with such a budget phone. The only problem is it charges slow. I am using a Qualcomm® certified charger, which has a blue LED for normal charging, that turns green when using Quick Charge. It works fine for my HTC phones. The Moto G5 seemingly doesn't work with Qualcomm's QC chargers?
Does the Moto G5 support Quick Charge 3.0 ? In theory it should do as the Snapdragon 430 does. Is it a firmware problem that is likely to be resolved, or just by design only to work with Motorola branded TurboPower™ chargers? It would be disappointing if that's the case.

After doing some reading heres some information
Quick charge & turbo charge are the same thing - its just manufacturers brand names
Both moto g5 & g5 plus phones support fast charging, with the Moto G5 coming with a 10W TurboCharge charger out of the box, and the G5 Plus with a 15W TurboCharge adapter.
The Motorola Turbo charger will charge the device at a faster rate when the device is below 78%. If the device is already at 78% or higher, it will charge at regular speed.
1% - 65% 53 mins
- 96% 1hr 33 mins
- 100% 1hr 52 mins
Currently as far as I can tell it's quick charge 2.0 although as you said in theory it can support 3.0 - Maybe a future firmware upgrade will allow this
I assumed it would it be same thing under a different silly brand name - it says on Motorola website that their ' TurboPower™ ' charger is in fact Quick Charge 2.0 - and works as such in other phones, so I can't see why Quick Charge certified chargers don't work with this phone.
Anyway it doesn't for me, so I am hoping it will be fixed in future firmware. I have emailed Motorola direct about it, I will see if they reply....
Am I write in thinking the only thing special about the quick charges is the wattage? Pin output being the same as good old changers?
I ask as I going to be fitting new plug sockets with high wattage USB ports in some locations around the house. Chargers are always going walkies in my house :crying:

No, Quick Charge™ uses the data + and - pins to negotiate and supply different voltages (3.6 V to 20 V) and currents to charge quickly. Its different to using a standard high wattage 5v outlet.

leaves me a little lost then. If turbocharge is the same as quickcharge 2.0 then my charger that came with phone is not a turbocharge at all. It has a output rating of 5.2v.
Edit: didn't see last post as it was an old refresh I guess lol Didn't quite sink in when i seen rapid charge in the promo on there site.

Exactly the same. I saw "rapid charging" on their website and assumed with the fact it has a Snapdragon 430 processor, it would support Quick Charge 3.0. No idea why they have chosen not to support it Never mind, it's still a decent enough slow charging phone running Android 7.1.2, for the money.
i just bought the mrs one for xmas and dont think its has a fast charger with it...

I'd like to equip myself with AC to USB adapters to fit my A520F, but I can't see anywhere what is the norm under which the fast-charging works for that device.
I saw that USB-PD certified devices could fast-charge the A520F, and I saw that the samsung supplied adapter can deliver 9 V @ 1.7 Amps max.
Those are all hints that the A520F should be pretty much charging quickly and nicely on any USB-PD source rated above 15 or 20W, but I also heard about "Adaptative fast-charging", "IQ technology" and so-on that smells like marketing and branding.
My question is: does anyone has any more solid information on the quick-charging standards supported by the A520F ?
As far as I know, the Adaptive fast charging, IQ Techonology and others are just marketing terms. What I've read online is that even if the A5 supports up to 15W of power delivery, it usually draws less power than that.
This is an extract of an article I read about it:
When 49% charged and turned on, the Samsung Galaxy A5 starts drawing power to around 6.2 watts (8.8 volts @ 0.7 amps). When the phone is off or in sleep mode, it pulls higher current to eventually charge at about 12.3 watts (8.8 volts @ 1.4 amps).
The Samsung Galaxy A5 was also seen getting around the same power levels from other chargers like the Google 18W USB-C Power Adapter and Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD while the phone is both active and inactive.
So I guess buying a 20W+ fast charger won't do much difference. Same thing happens with the Galaxy S8/S8+.

G7 comes with QC 3.0 although the chipset can support QC 4.0 as per Qualcomm. I see on other forums that users can tell when their phone is quick-charging or slow-charging.
1) Does the G7 let you know what speed it is charging at? I'd like to know so I can swap out cables, chargers, Qi pad, to get the fastest charging rate.
2) Is there a difference between Samsung's Fast Charging, and Qualcomm's QC 3.0?
3) If a charger says that it is compatible with Samsung S9's or S9+'s fast charging, will it fast charge the G7?
4) is there a QC Qi pad that is compatible with our QC 3.0 phone? If so, can I assume that I would still need to power it with a QC 3.0 wall wart?
5) Will a USB-PD or USB-IF charger quick charge our phones?
6) What is the minimum QC cable type (USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1) needed to get the maximum QC 3.0 charge? Does it have to be a 3.1 cable?

It's currently telling me 19 minutes to full charge from 93%. Is there a way to get this remaining-time info while cable-charging through the USB-C port?

The charge rate of the phone irrespective of the chargers we use, it is controlled by the stock kernel. When screen is on, it lowers down the amperage (See Ampere App) to keep off the heat, vice versa etc. We need a custom kernel to have the charging amperes to be changed manually which is really cool. If we have a really cool custom kernel, the CPU governors should preset customisable governors (for smooth performance) and for the charge values, just look for a 3A charger, with the Kernel Adiutor change the values. Meaning the benefits of rooting gives us the complete freedom of our Android! If a 4A charger is detected by the kernel manager app, the charge values should show as "upto 4A even with the screen on! Then no need to be jealous of Dash Charging of One Plus!
I think this article will help you out... Breaks it all down... Samsung charger are not the greatest for fast charging but works better than a basic one... Ultimately I would say USB c to USB c with USB PD is your fastest with QC 3.0/4.0 being a close second..

The lock screen always tells you how long until full no matter what charger you are using and it will say fast charging, wireless or just charging... My observations have been around 1.5 hour for 60 percent to full so about 5 hours if dead, great before going to sleep and I missed it in my least few phones

Thanks! I noticed you do not have a G7 listed as a current phone in your signature. Is your answer above based upon your experience with Samsung phones and their charging system, or specifically with the G7 (or other QC 3.0 phones)?
I hadn't notice the charging speed on the lock screen, as I have the phone set to basically bypass it all the time (fingerprint, facial recognition, & geo-fence)...so I didn't even know it was listed there on the bottom. Thanks again...now I know it's there
Strange thing is I went through a bunch of permutations with cables (various generations), and charge blocks and Qi pads this morning, and with the phone starting at 93% charged, it made no difference in remaining charge time no matter what combination of the items I hooked up. I saw the standard "charging" memo with some combos, and the "fast charging" one too, with others. Can I assume that even though the phone might say it's fast charging, it ramps the speed/power level up and down as necessary due to the current state of charge, or heat or some other factors? Would it also possibly switch into fast-charging with more power if the phone was starting at a lower state of charge, or possibly cooler?Yes, I'll have to read the link above as it's probably covered there
"Fast Wireless Charging" is supported and working.
I have a RavPower 15w and 3 umdigi 15w qi wireless pads that all say wirelessly fast charging when connected. Needs an 18w QC2-3 charger for the input voltage ranges needed to work.
It is noticeably faster than a 10w qi pad and only slightly slower than QC 3.0 USB average charge.

Of the 2 Qi pads you mention, any preferences towards one or the other (or a different one altogether)? I have an Anker QC 3.0 charger I can connect up to it.
BTW.. I cannot locate a 15W Ravpower pad. What model is it? And is the Umdigi a model Q1?

My pixel screen went bad and the charging port went bad also... Just got the g7 so I haven't changed my signature or updated my devices...
Samsung Fast charge is basically qc2 ... And standard USB A to C do not support the higher current that USB C to C does... I notice fastest charging with my pixel USB PD charger...
And yes you won't notice as much fast charging from the top 20 percent of the battery to prevent over charging...
for me, from 25% of charge, the fast charge advertisement says 1 hour and 20 minutes (charge fast???????).... if i use a normal charger (not fast), the time goes to 1 hour and 31 minutes. this phone has a charge fast but very low fast

I know it's hard from a specs perspective as most are only 75% efficient so the 10w might only be 7.5w and 15w is actually 10w, which is why LG customer services expressly states you must use a 15w QI charger for fast wireless charging. Another problem is the specs aren't always accurate and updated devices might still have old specs listed. I tried a bunch before I found a couple I liked. The mophie streampad+ also does fast wireless charging but is listed as 10w.
The RavPower is a standup charger I use in the office, the other UmDigi chargers I have scattered around the house and in the bedroom.

I'm in the market for a qi charger that can fast charge my Thinq g7. I see reports of needing 15W but not seeing many out there that have that spec.
I have seen a RavPower one posted here that is said to do it but the price is quite high for that model. Does anyone else have experience with fast charging the thinq g7 with a Qi charger?
I have Samsung Fast wireless charger. This present with S7. Fast charging battery of S7 Edge, S9+. But G7 didn't support fast wireless charging. And charging is slow. So you can buy what you want but charging with this phone will be slow.

Just thought I'd add to this - the charger that comes with the LG G7 ThinQ (Verizon) is labeled with outputs 9V/1.8A and 5V/1.8A. My old HTC 10 charger is labeled 12V/1.25A, 9V/1.7A, 5V/2.5A. I haven't tried it on the HTC 10's charger on a measuring device to see actual power delivery, but at least on the face of it, if it supports those higher voltages and/or amps, you should be able to get faster charging than with the charger out of the box.
On the other hand, faster charging may in part be why the HTC 10's battery lifetime is dismal, and not once have I thought "boy I wish my G7 would charge faster".

According to some sites ThinQ is capable of 27W (9x3) charging. I therefore purchased a Xiaomi 65W charger which outputs 9x3 but the phone charges only with 15W (5x3) so wasted money.
Yes. I bought 3 different chargers and also a watt meter. When charging with screen on max amps is 1A and 6-8wattage. When screen is off it goes up to max 16watt. And it doesnt matter which charger i use.
80min for a full chsrge isnt that good. But think that lg g7 released in 2018?

I did not dwell (yet) into getting a separate wireless charging pad (and I haven't really been charging it much that ways yet either). I stumbled upon my lost Samsung Wireless charging pad which I used extensively on the S series earlier (unable to post link as I am a new user). Please google Samsung EP-PG920I Wireless Charger.
Questions and Concerns :
I once started charging it wireless from 3% or so and observed that suddenly it would stop charging on its own. It would not start charging again until it was lifted and placed again and again in some time it would stop charging. I thought it might be a one-off issue and tried to do the same the other day and it did the exact same thing all over again the next time as well. I'm assuming it has something to do with the charger pad. I did read somewhere that the phone has its cut off if it reaches a particular temp while charging and wondering if that is what is happening ?
Has anyone here faced the same issue ?
Is anyone here using the wireless charging option extensively and have no issues whatsoever ? If yes, please specific make / brand / setup in use for charging. Also please specify if the phone has been successfully charged say more than 50% on wireless.

I don't use wireless charging.. But from what your describing, it might just be time, to purchase a newer one.. I would hate to think, that the Samsung works only with Samsung.. But nothing would surprise me these days..

I don't have any issues with it. Are you sure that the power brick is providing enough power. It should provide at least 5V 2amps in order to work. I use the stock brick to power my wireless charger. If it's not that go to a retail store and find a wireless charger to test on.

Appreciate your response. I used my stock g7 adaptor on wireless samsung charging pad. So it is basically pumping out as much as required. Not sure if it is the charging pad which is at fault for not able to handle it maybe ? (Which actually is not its fault?). Pls post details of what setup you are using without any issues. Unfortunately, I havent seen any big retail (or small) advertising or even having wireless charging pads on display for me to walk in and check this out. In India this concept has not caught up and not many are interested in this feature. Many might have the option but still not use the feature.
Your EP-PG920I doesn't support Qualcomm QI charging at all. It doesn't support even new Samsung devices like S8 or S9, it supports S6 and S7 only.
Samsung supported at that time only WPC 1.1 standard and no Qualcomm QI. That's why EP-PG920I isn't full compatible with your LG 7.

Much appreciated with the explanation. I guess I have a better understanding of this now. So while it does actually charge it is not the recommended way and the issue faced is because it ultimately breaks midway as not fully supported cause of the limitation. I will give one of the better chargers and the QI certified fast chargers a go.

This wireless charger work without any problems with S7 Edge, S6, S9+, and G7. In specs: FAST CHARGE (Compatible with Galaxy Note8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, S6 Edge+) / Qi (Compatible with Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Qi certified devices). Only "problem" with G7 is it charging slow. Very slow - from 5 to 100% maybe 3+ hours. But this is no meaning for me, I charge my phone at night. I read G7 doesn't support fast wireless charging. Here in other thread people said support fast wireless charging, but it isn't.

Just like the case in mine it may be working but not completely. From the specs I see it has a max output of 1000mA that may be the reason for slow charge (i guess)
Yes charging slow but I don't have your problems with charging. Stop or anything else you write. Maybe you have to get other wireless charging pad.

I've got question about my Mi 9 SE. Recently I bought a USB tester for voltage and current. When charging the smartphone it shows most of the time time 7V/1.8A. Shouldn't it be around 9V/ 2A or 5V / 3A? (Tested on original cable and charger)
Edit: One more thing - since miui 11 update - my phone does this weird thing that when I connect the phone to the charger, in the first 10 seconds quick charge turns on, then it turns off and on again (further on it is stable)
me too, its charging at 15w most of the time, may be 18w if power off, havent tried
switching from fast to slow then fast is normal, it means it detect and enabled qualcomm charging protocol, afaik
