Hi:
I just brought a new factory unlocked Pixel XL on ebay that I plan to use on Verizon. I am upgrading from a Galaxy Note 4 that is running CM13. The Pixel is coming with Android 7.1. Since I know that a lot of you are Car Talk fans, I will answer their most common question - The phone is 'Very Silver'. My question to you all is what should I do with the phone? Should I stay on Nougat or upgrade to Oreo? Do I even have a choice if I stay with the stock ROM? Should I flash a different ROM? If so, which do you recommend?
Thanks for your help!

First before you update any system, I would recommend going into developer settings and see if you can select OEM Unlocking if it isn't already and also unlock your bootloader. Remember to have debug mode selected as well. After you unlock your bootloader then boot up phone and update. I

There is an update waiting to go at least to 8.0.0, most likely 8.1.0, waiting for you when you activate it.

By all means, unlock the bootloader first, if you can :good:
Thanks for all your advice. The phone came today and unfortunately it is the wrong phone. He sent a Pixel rather than an Pixel XL - too small for my big hands. I will order another XL and will be in contact when I get it. I would still like advice on ROMS.
Thanks again!
First is to make sure you werent scammed with the seller selling a **** Verizon model off as a Play version, the Version models have a lovely Verizon rootkit that prevents you from unlocking the bootloader and other than running the command below there is no way to tell the difference:
adb shell getprop ro.boot.cid
if it returns anything with VWZ try to return it ASAP as it is 100% useless for rooting

Hi,
I recently good a good deal on a Verizon pixel XL and to my pleasant surprise it is still on 7.1 and I don't think it's ever been updated. I've read that in this case I can still go ahead and unlock the bootloader which essentially means that my phone is as good as the Google edition. So could someone please point me to some guide or list the steps on how I can go ahead and achieve this.
Thanks in advance!

Forgive the late response/question but I have read several conflicting statement regarding Verizon and it's version of android being bootloader unlockable...My understanding is that android 7.0 is unlockable. I have read that 7.1 is unlockable in some places and not unlockable in others. Version 7.1.2 is absolutely NOT unlockable.
So, Is version 7.1 (don't know if that's the same as 7.1.0 or 7.1.1 or however it might read) unlockable with the depixel8 work around?
Looking at buying a pixel 1 XL still on 7.1 so I don't know if I should go for it or not....
Thanks!

Yes 7.1 is unlockable while anything past 7.1 isn't.

Hello everyone. I'm in China currently and I'll stay here for a while. I'm planning to buy Xiaomi Mi 6 from Taobao. Here is the link
So am I going to be able to use Google services? Play Store and all other if I buy this phone? Also, if not, I guess that I need to root my phone and install custom rom in order to get Google services. Is there any way to root and install custom rom as well as TWRP without using the computer?
Thanks
I've been to China and I bought a redmi not 3 there, in my experience there should be no problem; you buy the phone, unlock the bootloader and switch from China to global rom. Probably there is also the possibility to install Gapp on the Chinese rom. The only problem is that if you wanna use Google and it's services in China you better have a VPN
Oh, I understand. But it's not the same. Models are different. Actually I'm not sure. It's going to be my first Xiaomi phone. So far I'm familiar with Xperia and HTC. Love them both but "high" end devices are getting too expensive. I'm also considering to buy OnePlus 3T. What do you guys think which is better and easier for unlocking, rooting and installing custom roms?
I repeat again that I'm not familiar with these brands, never touched them actually I Need your help! And don't forget that I don't have PC. Unlocking bootloader, root, recovery and rom must be done without Pc. Help help help

Just unlock bootloader and flash Global rom via MiFlash. It's that easy.
My device is the Chinese model. Bought from a seller who just imports them and flashes the global ROM
The mi 6 models are all identical.
Global is the same as Chinese anyway just a different model number since they had to get more legal things pushed through to sell it internationally.
Buy the Chinese model in China. It will be cheapest there.
Then when you are back in a country which supports Google services you can unlock the boot loader, then flash using Mi flash to the global ROM.
Since the phone is identical this works fine. I was running the global ROM on mine (now custom ROMs).
Really a great phone and no issues for me.
Also checkout the mi mi 2 it looks pretty awesome but for a "smaller" device Mi 6 is fantastic.

Xiaomi follows the same standard for all their models..
Want to Unlock the bootloader?
-Make a Xiaomi account
-Link the phone to your Xiaomi account
-Request them to allow you to unlock the bootloader
-Waits 72 hours
-Unlock bootloader.
Thank you all for replying, appreciate your help. I'm going to buy Mi 6. Actually I meet a guy today who is willing to help me and he knows about these things. So, buying, unlocking bootloader, flashing official global rom>using Google services Later if I want I need to root device install custom recovery and new rom. We'll see. Any recommendations for rom, with no bugs

Thanks! It's not overheating?
No, it's just too large for me. I like to use phone with one hand. I'm not a fan of displays larger than 5.5 inches so I'll stick with Mi 6.

Overheating?
Not at all. Its a really good phone.
You dont have to unlock or root the phone in order to install gapp
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/systemless-gapps-china-miui-8-miui-9-t3657322
This gapp works perfectly on china miui 8/9.
Coming from a OnePlus3, which was easy to root and had tons of ROMs...
If I want the same with the S9, I need to buy the international version unlocked, correct?
Also I saw in the S8 thread that AOSP ROMs are not easily available, or still being worked on but OK for S9?
I'm looking for good hardware that I can root and debloat (titanium backup is a must for me and has saved me countless times).
I prefer the S8 because it is cheaper but not if AOSP is a problem.
Thoughts?
S9 has RMM implemented, long story short its a new feature of samsung that prevents you from flashing custom binaries (TWRP Included) to the phone for the first 7 days of using it.
Once you get your phone, finish set up wizard, connect a google and samsung account and wait 7 days for the OEM unlock button to appear. There are AOSP roms for the device, namely RR and Lineage OS.
I came from a oneplus 3 running AOSP resurrection remix 6.0 to the galaxy s9 a few days ago. I've been flashing phones for many years now, so I'm well versed in initially gaining root/custom recovery. This phone was a breeze to flash. The root guide in the tutorials section of this sub forum was great. Just make sure the usb drivers are on your pc and you follow the instructions exactly. I had resurrection remix 6.0 running on my galaxy s9 (exynos) in 10 mins after opening the box! [emoji106]
Thanks to you both. There are two international (non-US) variants - one with Exynos and one with Snapdragon.
Only the Exynos can be bootloader unlocked, correct?

I'm unsure about the bootloader abilities of the snapdragon variant. I only have the Exynos personally, which is unlockable.

Thanks. I got an answer in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-g9600-bootloader-question-t3795978?nocache=1
There is no TWRP for the snapdragon international variant so I will definitely stay away from it.
After rumors that this phone will get Android Oreo update in next few months, nothing comes real till now.
Even lineageOs have developed oreo system for other models but not sm-n920a .
What's wrong with this model ?

Locked bootloader and locked down kernel. Not to mention, our carrier has left us for dead hoping we will buy another phone on a Next plan enslaving us for another 24 to 30 months. We will not get anything more than the 7.0 (with the occasional security update) that we already have for the device now.

The kernel and bootloader are locked down, so no. There is no hope for AT&t branded Note 5's. They're not going to give us the kernel, and won't unlock the bootloader. Best bet is to get a different phone that's not AT&t proprietary, and not purchase anything proprietary from AT&t again in protest.
I know that I won't.
Hi, I recently bought a sony xperia z5 which i saw later that its bootlaoder cannot be unlocked. Now i am planing to go with Oneplus 5t (used one) so i just wanted to know what model number should i buy ( I am in india ) or what should i check before buying 5t ? which can be rooted and unlock bootloader too ( i am planing to buy it from dubai) your help is appreciated
Yes, that's not a problem. Oneplus even provide "official" instructions how to unlock. You are stuck with a warning on bootup once you do though.
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and playing with roms was a priority when buying a new phone.
