Thats OOS5, no beta or alpha. Its stable.
If u want to flash and try out some custom roms, stick with Nougat rooms for now as most of the Oreo ROMs are corrently unstable and slightly buggy.
Coming to what is alpha beta etc, a rom is called to be in aplha stage when it is not stable, has lot of bugs and is not recommended as a daily driver. Usually it's installed by users only to try and test it.
Beta ROMs are relatively more stable than aplha builds but less stable than 'Stable' builds. Beta ROMs can be used as daily drivers but u might sometimes encounter bugs.
Stable builds are made for usage on daily basis with usually no bugs.
Since you are new, let me suggest u some nougat ROMs. Try out unofficial lineage os by sultan, paranoid Android 7.3.1, unofficial ressurection remix zenity.

I got this phone 2nd hand, but I cant stand the MIUI stuff. Any stable rom that offers a clean android experience?
I have tried to download the Cyanogen Mod 12.1 but the ROM seems to be offline.
you can try CM13, but it is still in the development stage.
what do you mean by offline??
Well, by offline I mean that the download link returns "request timed out".
ok try mokee 5.1.1 release version with xcelerate kernel build 24 its the best stable for now.... if you want to tweak audio then try viperatmos by guitardedhero........ and believe me this is the great experience i got till now with redmi 1s

Did you try Xposed for Lollipop, it works in the ROM?
Yes its working...... i dont use custom rom without xposed
Try aosp lollipop. It's the best and stable with xcelerate kernel. Try it.
So the T-mobile stock rom is stuck in 4.4 as we all know and I wanted to know if another rom would make it faster or slower? Which would be the best rom for performance and what OS 6.0, 7.0, or 5.0 is generally better. Also, battery life is a concern
Similar concern, how are last builds of cm 13? I know 7.0 is in flux with transition to lineageos. But I'm about to pull the trigger on a used s4 to be my new daily driver. It's the most compact GSM phone with relatively modern specs and good custom ROM support
Any input greatly appreciated
The last build of CM is rather stable and has proved to be the most reliable for daily use. AlaskaLinuxUser seems to be the only remaining active dev for the M919. He recently mentioned that he will continue to support the (currently 7.1.1) AOKP rom, which for the time being is the only actively maintained Android N rom for our obscure variant of the S4. It is rather stable but there are a few quirks. If we are lucky, an official Lineage 14 build will be made available soon. I wouldn't count on it though!

im getting random reboots on aokp, what is the best aosp rom for s4 rn? (nougat or otherwise?)
Same here, I've had several issues with 7.x.x roms and rather dreadful battery life. I would recommend the final build of CM 13 as a stable OS until some milestones are met.
I'm not asking for OTA I just want to know if it's going to happen.
I've been using RR as far as I can remember and I want to see it in the future too. Now that Oreo roms are piling up I got worried.
Is RR going to release an alpha, a beta, a stable or a nightly?
(Do any of you guys have any information about Zenity? Is it going to continue in Oreo?)

ETA for stable Android Q? How long was Android pie in beta?
Bump
Custom ROM or MIUI?
Mainly interested in custom ROMs but gonna try miui aswell.
For MIUI I don't think will ever come out but for custom ROMs its all about developers how much they gonna invest time in fixing device bugs and make it stable.
As I understand Android 11 ROMs are still a bit buggy so which Android 10 ROM woud you suggest if I want everything working and stable?

Practically all of them are stable and bug free.
I advise you Ressurection remix (last build), if you wish to customize your phone. Or Pixel Experience if you want a rom with a stock look.
LineageOS, as you can lock the boot loader and receive flawless OTAs.
