My M8 is a spare phone. Most time it's just sitting in the drawer. However once every one or two months I'm doing the GP updates and checking my other sim for text etc.
Couple days ago I wanted to repeat this. However I was not able to turn on the phone so I thought that battery was drained so I plugged in the charger. Red led did not lit. This is when I started worrying about the phone. I thought that battery is dead but then the phone turned on itself. Phone was operational again and I was happy.
I decided to give another restart and the same happened- phone was not responding for 10min and then was again working.
So the issue is: phone is booting very slow: 10-15 minutes
What I have done so far:
- multiple reboots
- factory reset
- wiping cache partition
- tested with sim and SD card removed
Stock Android 6.0 software number 6.12.401.4. UK model, not branded.
Anyone have seen something like this?
Any suggestion how to fix it?
Thanks in advance

Are you aware that you described the HTC 10, not the M8 there?
Anyway, seems like a battery issue to me, try this:
Turn off Fast Boot in settings. Power off phone.
Plug phone into HTC charger and charge for two minutes or more
While charging, hold down volume up+volume down+power button and continue holding
Phone will turn on and off repeatedly every 15 seconds or so while continuing to hold all three buttons
Keep this going for 2 minutes, then release buttons when phone is ON
Now, let phone charge fully normally (with phone either on or off--doesn't matter) and battery level reporting, charging and battery life should be normalized.

You are right. I was posting this on my HTC 10 and automatically checked the version.
Correct version is Android 6.0 software number 6.12.401.4
I think I tried what you're suggesting but the thing is that it takes ages when holding this buttons as booting is slow even in the early stage of the boot. I will give a try again.
One more thing - I do not have option for fastboot in power settings.
Edit
First try - phone turned on the turned off and then nothing despite pressing buttons
Second try - nothing happened at all with pressed buttons for 3 minutes. Once released after 3 minutes phone booted.
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
Third try - I hold the buttons for 6 minutes. Phone restarted twice and third time booted into bootloader.
When the screen is black during holding the buttons I can hear static noise so definitely something is happening but very slow.
Any other ideas?
That's weird.
I'd try a RUU to make sure it's not software related. Maybe a partition got corrupted.
Also, the phone fully works then it finally boots up?

I suspect your firmware is outdated, as this is the main reason for extreme long boot times. The charge/battery events may be a red herring, and unrelated.
Tell us what is says in bootloader for OS number. And if OS numbers is blank, what does it say for hboot and radio baseband numbers?
If you know how (or can figure out how), do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

"fast boot" hasn't been a power option setting in HTC devices since Kitkat. The feature doesn't exist anymore, and therefore does not need to be "turned off" for any reason.
This "fast boot" option is also not to be confused with the fastboot/adb tool I just mentioned (they are completely different things with very similar names), which is still fully working.

Is the M8 stock unrooted? Since the details you gave are for the M10, I can't tell if the same (stock unrooted) also applies to the M8 we are trying to fix.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will check later and provide the info.
Just to confirm once fully booted phone is working fine as far as a can see and the system is stock unrooted.

6-8 months ago I have had an issue with GP Services so I flashed the phone with:
0P6BIMG_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_HTC_Europe_6.12.401.4_Radio_1.29.214500021.12G_20.72.4196t.01_release_464360_signed.zip
fw_6.12.401.4.zip
There was no issue after the flash. So not sure what is the reason for this problem.
Strange, I haven't seen an issue with slow boot like this, except from outdated firmware. Your firmware is up to date (and this is typically an issue of custom ROM, root, etc.)
I would suggest run the RUU again. If the issue persists, it may be a hardware issue.
Ok, I managed to find link I used previously: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
I flashed the RUU and all seems to be working fine, booting is now taking 30sec to the set up screen. I now need to recover the apps and settings.
Any idea what caused this problem?
Thanks for all suggestions.

Like I've said, maybe a partition got corrupted and caused those problems or something inside might be slowly dying.
As long as it works it's okay I guess.
During set up phone did not asked to restore from GP backup. Is there any way to force this restore especially the home screen settings?

hi i've got a huge problem with my htc m8. it wont boot anymore and always keeps on beeing stuck on "android is starting... starting apps." after an optimization of 167 apps. have been pulling an all nighter and im at the end of the rope unfortunatly =(.
i alrdy hard reset it several times. through bootloader factory reset, as well as recovery and wipe data/fac reset. i only can stop the bootloop by pressing power+volume up and switching into bootloader. it also takes forever to optimize the 167 apps....
after having read a few threads here and elsewhere i also did 2 recoverys with 0P6BIMG.zip with an miniSD card through bootloader/fastboot and once through htc_fastboot with RUU.zip through the CMD in win10. in all 5 cases the phone tells me it successfully "recovered"/reset its system but it still always starts again with optimizing 167 apps and then beeing stuck on "starting apps...".
the m8 is ***locked*** and S-ON with software status official. OS- 6.12.401.4. i never customized the android os and bought it brand new.

I`ve had a similar issue today, while trying to revert my phone from an update to GPE Rom.
I was able to reboot my phone, and get back to the bootloader, and from there I flashed to a stock rom.
What I did was, volume up + power, and just when the phone turned black, I pushed the volume down button, and it entered the bootloader instantly.
Sorry if it didn`t help you out much, but I was stuck in the updating apps, and was able to get off rebooting loop only like that, I was stuck for about an hour on that!
Good luck!

The OP has a stock device, so the situation is really not similar, nor have the same solution.
In addition, what the OP neglected to post here (but posted in another thread) is that his issue was caused by dropping the phone, and going major physical damage. No amount of software fixes is going to help the OP:

What exactly did you try to flash (file name) and flash it how (TWRP, fastboot, etc.).?
What was the original condition? "revert from an update to GPE Rom" really isn't specific enough.
Were you on a GPE ROM, or did you fully convert to GPE using RUU (2 very different things)/ Bootloader screen is black or white?
Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

i didnt drop the phone. a 2.5 kg plate dropped on it. and i also dont think its interior is broken because of that. only the display glass is broken. the phone was working fine for hours until i tried to use the front camera and the camera app froze up. up to that point all functions were normal apart from the visuals of the broken display glass. even the touchpad/digitizer and colours of the display are working at 100%.
because of that frozen camera app i rebooted the phone. thats when it started to bootloop. the bootloader is also working fine. dislay is still working fine. it just wont boot beyond optimizing apps....
the only hardware problem that could be is: if the front camera is mailfuntioning. can it stop the android os from booting? thats the only explanation it could have for a bootloop hardware wise. if thats not the case its purely a software problem

You dropped a 2.5 kg plate on your M8, and caused physical damage also, like the OP? You tried to flash the RUU through htc_fastboot and SD card methods?
Please don't just post you have the "same problem" without giving any details. My experience, that these issues are never exactly the same (simply too many variables: different CIDs, version numbers, causes for the issue) and if you don't give any details, nobody can provide the proper help.
At a minimum, describe what events led to the current condition (and what that condition is), what you've tried (specific steps, file names, etc.) and the specific outcomes (error messages, other outcomes). Also do fastboot getvar all, and post the output (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).
even i had the same prob..i fixed it by wiping the cache partition..
get into bootloader menu ..go to recovery..and then after the red exclamatory sign appears..keep pressing power button and hold and release volume up button..you will get the wipe cache partition option.
do dat and ur phone will reboot
power and volume up press.

Hey all, i have a bit of problem here.
To days ago my M8 started to randomly turn off , and now it`s happening more and more often , to point where it is impossible to use.
Before it started it got a bit hot, not to hot, regular htc hot.
Tried: Blues GPE,Lypota GPE (was on this one before things happened), Sky dragoon GPE
Things i tried:
*Reflash rom - FAIL
*Flash diffrent rom - FAIL
*Reroot phone - FAIL
*Wipe everything root again - FAIL
*Start fresh without restoring anything - FAIL
How does this sudden turn off happen:
It`s fine, when it`s plugged in and charging, sometimes not, tried to test GPE maybe one of them fails, it`s random. When i remove phone from power it works for a while if i don`t press any app, but again it`s like a lottery , sometimes it works for longer sometimes it just dies, and i get more or less stuck on system not booting.
Do anybody have any suggestions ?

When you say "FAIL" you mean these things actually don't happen successfully (fail to flash, etc.); or that the random power off persists?
Are you converted to GPE by RUU? Maybe try to RUU to full GPE "stock" and see if that helps.
You may be looking at a bad battery or some other hardware failure (emmc).

Depends some rom fail to flash some works. After flashing power off problem persists. As for now, i`m not able to turn on phone without power cord, but once it`s one, works fine unless i do anything (starting an app and so on)
At the beginning i used Hanson2000`s toolkit to root the phone, and after that installed GPE room.
Will try to convert to stock GPE with RUU and update on results.

The toolkit hasn't been updated since April 2014! It contains woefully obsolete version of TWRP, and that is probably why some ROMs are failing to flash. Highly advise to update to current TWRP 3.0.
How long have you had the phone, how long on GPE ROMs? Is the firmware up to date?

You can only do this if you have s-off.
You may want to try to RUU back to your stock (probably Sense) version, and see if the random power offs persist.
To me it looks like a hardware fail, most likely a bad battery. OP says it works when plugged in but dies when not.
My guess ,if all else fail ,is to try a new battery

Be careful with your terminology there, to avoid confusion. From your previous post, you stated you just flashed a GPE ROM.
This isn't the same as "converting" to GPE with RUU, which puts you on GPE firmware, GPE partitioning, etc.

I don't know what that means, if you don't give details on what you did, and the specific results. But I'm assuming you know how to use command prompt to issue adb/fastboot commands, entered the command, and get no response (or device offline)?
If so, check that you are in bootloader-fastboot mode, have HTC drivers installed, or try different cable or USB port.

I tend to agree that its a hardware problem. But its always a good idea to return to full stock by RUU, to eliminate the possibility its a software issue, before concluding its a hardware problem.

By that you mean: Connecting phone to PC and flashing Newer recovery or OS ?
Hi all,
My gfs phone has had some recent issues with her phone.
First: wifi would be dropped, unable to even turn on the wifi. Error: unable to load drives, reason unknown (19)
So I rooted, unlocked, and flashed with GPE. Worked fine for a few months. Then the same issue occurred, so I flashed again....it got fixed again.
Then last night, it dropped the mobile network. Just kept saying install SIM card.
I did full wipe with TWRP. Tried to reload a GPE rom and it gets to the setup stage. Right away I get "unable to load driver" error. The phone keeps asking me to install SIM card; eventhough there is one in there. And if I skip that step, it won't let me turn wifi....
Is the phone dead? It was originally locked to Rogers in Canada...
Tried GPE, S-ROM, Viper....all coming up with same error of not being able to detect SIM or turn on WIFI during setup....
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Would more info be helpful here?

I was able to get sim recognition working by doing a data format, factory wipe, then GPE-ROM re-install, but WIFI still knocked out.
Any suggestions?
So, tried flashing back with a TWRP stock backup
CID ROGER001
MID 0P6B16000
6.13.631.7
Then reverted to stock 6.13.631.7 recovery.
Everything booted fine, then "unable to load driver error 19" came up again.
Wifi and bluetooth basically greyout and freeze everytime I try to turn them on.
Any suggestions as to what I can try next?
So figured out the issue.
Needed to update to latest firmware. Thought I had done that when I flashed back to stock.
Missed the step to relock bootloader before flashing firmware with fastboot.
Firmware update went through, and voila....everything up and running...for now.
I'm experiencing very similar problem myself. It seems like the phone was updated ota but it just bugs way too much. When i try to turn on wifi it says failed to load driver, if i turn the air plane mode on and off, and then try to connect to wifi i again get the error, the phone freezes and is stuck in bootlops.
I'm not experienced in flashing but i would like to try to troubleshoot the problem myself. I've heard about the ruu but i'm not sure about my phone variant, and also, do i need root or any type of unlock to reflash my phone to stock ? Tnx.
PS: I bought phone on ebay and it seems like it is running the correct version of stock sense rom.

Bro did you read sticky on top which says FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ? Much of what you want to know is already there?
Anyway to start off , You turn off the the phone and hold volume down + power button for a few (say 10) seconds and note what it says and post it here.and before you ask,no its not that dangerous

I have read FAQ and there is no specific question related to my problem there. I have found a few people having wifi issues and unexpected shutdowns but non of them were able to fix it. Most of them just returned the phone which led me to believe the problem might be coming from the hardware side. I've already tried cleaning the cache partition and multiple hard resets, and nothing helped. I know it is not dangerous to enter recovery, as I said, I have read the FAQ. The only method of retrieving the phone variant i found was typing getvar in the cmd thingy which can again be false, depending on the flashed software/kernel/radio or whatever (yes i don't distinguish between radio and kernel really. I'm a noob as I said). I tried googling about the RUU and the root permition and didn't find anything usefull accept for the fact that phone has to be S-on, which my phone is.
So, I did do my research, but i can't go through 400 or so pages of help thread to find a specific question, that might not be even there in the first place so i asked it here.
Sorry for your time and long post, but I will return the phone tomorow, because I really can't know whether the device is defected or not, better safe than sorry.
well if you can return it then its a good way to do be safe, but as the OP said he solved his problem by updating his firmware . I was going to do suggest just that.l,but as you said you did your research it turned out nothing useful and you have it all figured out anyway ,so good luck

What is the solution to this erorr? Error: unable to load drives, reason unknown (19)? i have the same
Hello dear xda users,
Sometime ago, I have posted questions about my htc m8 being unable to read sim card. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to solve the issue and it stands as a wifi device at present Anyway, this post im posting is about a friend's m8 which she passed to me to inquire if i knew of a solution to fix it. Her phone, if I am not mistaken (though she says that she bought it off a phone dealer locally), is theoretically not a local device. I did a check on it and it says m8_ul. I'm currently residing in Taiwan and after looking around, m8_ul either belongs to europe or australia. She was experiencing com.process.gapps error issues and made it impossible to use the device in any and every way. Googling around, I found threads regarding this issue (or similar) asking the user to clear the cache of all google services. I proceeded to do it and the result was no different. So I thought about rooting the device and maybe even flashing to stock (or modified stock) to get the phone working again.
The problem that I have at hand is that flashing TWRP works fine. It boots into the system and I could use adb to reboot into fastboot (despite the errors popping up). After that, I rooted the phone and now it just stays on the HTC logo until the battery dies out (by leaving it for as long as need be). It is also impossible to do a normal force shutdown(holding power for x number of secs *tried using power + vol up/down/both) or the "under a bright light" method.
So is there anyone who is kind enough and willing to extend a helping hand here? With a guide or something? :crying: Thanks in advance.

To be clear, and for your information, there is no reason that root alone would fix the issue. There is something wrong with the OS (system processes) so the previous suggestion to restore the stock ROM, is a good one.
Root is just a permission change, it won't "fix" anything in itself besides that (root permissions).
Also, the symptom of rooting and being stuck on HTC logo screen is most usually because you used the wrong version TWRP and/or wrong version SuperSU to root (its common folks are trying to use really old versions of either/both). Since the device is on Marshmallow, you need to use TWRP 3.0.2 and current stable version SuperSU is 2.78.
But again, rooting even properly won't fix the core issue. Restoring the stock ROM is your best bet.
@redpoint73:
Thank you for replying as well. I guess I have to put this away till the next day as I was kinda piled with work today. Really pooped out now, so I'ma go get me some shut eyes. As for what you mentioned, yea.. (1) TWRP was working fine after flashing.. it booted normally and is still functioning properly as of now. (2) It's only after I flashed UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.37 that the m8 wouldnt get past boot screen and stays there frozen till battery drains out. (3) Well, I was thinking of removing the app that was causing the errors and fixing them by installing those applications again from scratch without touching the os and since it said something like com.process.gapps or something of the kind, I'm guessing that it's already related to the os and hence, rooting to remove the corrupted file(s) or replacing new ones (in this case, I'm guessing adb and fastboot to push the files might probably work; which would make rooting unnecessary). So yep, that's my train of thought; to make as little changes to the system, no matter how unstable it might be during the time, and working out the kinks one by one. You know, just so if my friend would need to suddenly use the phone, I might/would have fixed a portion of it for her to be able to use it at that moment. Thanks so much to the both of you. I'm hoping it'll turn out well. I mean, like ahmed.ismael said, what's there for it not to work. Having hopeful thoughts here ^.^

As I guess, that version SuperSU is really old. No boot is the expected result.

Definitely would not work. Its a system app, part of the OS, and therefore can't be modified without root. Even with root, system is write protected and requires kernel mod.

I too see no reason for it not to work. Its just a software bug, and RUU will return the OS software to its original, intended condition.
sorry for not replying. im reattempting this again now and just a quick question. would rerooting with latest supersu at least fix booting? cause i dont really want to wait till battery dies out everytime i forget to boot directly into bootloader

you don't have to wait for the battery to die!!! when you boot and it boootloops just press the power button and volume up until in restarts and when it restarts quickly press the volume down and power for entering in bootloader...

It should fix the no-boot issue, yes. But you need to use the correct, up-to-date version TWRP (3.0.2) and SuperSU 2.78.

I tried to Unlock bootloader. I used Hasoon's tool. I confirmed YES to unload bootloader. But after restart Bootloader is still locked.
I tried to flash boot.img and recovery.img but all FAILS.
I can access the phone via ADB but anything flashing always fails. Tried sideload via ADB in Phone's recovery. But always Fails.
I can't access SD via Recovery, says E: mount fail. Tried to re-format the SD but no result
To me it seems like bootloader is corrupt and seems that without proper hardware I won't be able to do anything...
I spen many hours now and about to give up. Please let me know if I missed anything before I will, sadly, have to try professionals.
Many thanks to everyone.

I can't remember whether there is RUU for your device. I'll check later tonight.
For the time being, try to install stock 6.12.61.4 firmware and see whether this helps or not.

Based on the OS no. that you wrote. Regular M8 doesn't have that version, only M8s does.
To really confirm, write here all the details that you see on bootloder because your current one is incomplete.
Better if you give result of fastboot getvar all (without serial & imei no.), this will be truly complete details.

PC detects that something is connected by doesn't recognize it. Wont respond to any ADB commands. I also tried VOL UP/DOWN + POWER BUTTONS for 5minutes a number of times, but nothing.
I had similar problem with HTC One Mini 2, had to take phone apart and disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Phone started OK and worked fine after this. But really don't want to take this M8s apart to disconnect the battery. As it's not mine.
Don't know if to keep the phone on charger, or let it rather disconnected and discharge.. ??
Any help would be much appreciated.

First to answer your earlier question how to know whether your device is M8 or M8s.
As you can see in your getvar result, the product is m8ql_ul which belongs to M8s. M8 is m8_ul for GSM version.
Now your thread already been moved to M8s section. Hoefully someone familiar with M8s can assist here.
I can only assist on general term and idea.
With your getvar result, now we know you have a Lollipop. The RUU is for Marshmallow. To install a Marshmallow RUU (for the case of M8), you need first to install Marshmallow firmware then only can install Marshmallow RUU. That's explained the Large image failure. Unfortunately I don't know whether anyone post any firmware only for 2.10.401.1 so you can install the RUU after.
Getting this Large image failure doesn't brick a device. With S-On it's either the RUU is successfully installed or failed. And usually will only be successfully installed when the problem is firmware & software related. When a hardware problem like corrupted emmc, RUU won't be able to fix it.
As you used Hansoon toolkit earlier which is meant for M8 not M8s, not sure whether that have any effect on your device hardware.
Let's see whether anyone with M8s has any knowledge on how to fix your problem.

Thank you for the reply, yes there are some seriously valid points. I'm still hoping I'll be able to ressurect the phone. But before I had One Mini 2 with exactly same symptoms and had to take the phone apart, disconnect the battery and when put all back together phone worked again. But really want to avoid doing this... I'll give it a couple of days playing with buttons and charger and if phone doesn't start I will take it apart and do the battery trick.
Once working again will load a Lollipop on it and hopefully phone will work. If emmc is buggered then I think the phone is done...
Will keep everyone posted about results..
Again thank you very much
