On my Nexus 6 it remembers volume levels for each Bluetooth device. Useful when the car BT is 100% but then when you connect BT it doesn't blow out my ear drums.
I notice the Pixel 2 XL doesn't do this and seems to remember only what the BT volume was last set at.
Any idea how to do this, other than an app like Tasker?
I'm finding that when I get in my car, my phone bluetooth volume reverts to some low level, not the previously used level. I always have to manually bring bring the volume up to 100%. My car is the only bluetooth device I have paired with my phone.
I seem to recall that my Nexus 6 (when connected to the same bluetooth) would recall the previous volume level.

I should have mentioned, I was running Lineage OS on the Nexus 6 and stock Android on the Pixel 2 XL.
Wonder if it has to do with Absolute Volume (where Volume on your Bluetooth devices now syncs with volume on your phone).
Go into Developer Options and try selecting "Disable Absolute Volume" and see if that helps.

I don't know if this is from kit kat but has anyone tried using a blue tooth headset and noticed the minimum volume is extremely loud? I tried adjusting volume on headset and tablet and min volume either way was blowing my ears out. Don't recall this issue before. Could be mistaken though. Using LG Tones for the headphones.
*edit* put paranoid android (4.3)back on and can confirm the volume is significantly more adjustable. Before had about 7 lvls of volume all loud, now i am back to the normal 15ish levels. Not sure what was going on tonight but 4.4 was acting up. I think I'll wait til a more stable ROM comes out. I also wasn't happy to lose HBO Go with 4.4 lol and the amazon app store work around wasn't working for me. anyways heads up if you use bluetooth headsets with 4.4!

I use Bluetooth and I have 15 steps to my volume.

Not sure then. There was someone else having the same issue as me. I had the stock 4.4 that Mr. Roster put together. Not sure which 4.4 you are using.

It is Kit Kat issue on all devices that use the default Google Bluedroid Bluetooth stack, meaning Nexus devices and Google Play versions (other devices running a modified stack may not be affected).
Supposedly, it is an extension to Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 that enables Bluetooth audio devices to directly control Android's system volume. It seems some genius thought two independent volume levels (headphone volume and handset bluetooth level) was too confusing for folks. Clearly they did not think about (or test) that some Bluetooth audio devices with their own volume controls might default to a very high or low level, and control of only the handset's bluetooth level would not provide sufficient range of adjustment.
So once again we have Goofle googing up bluetooth in Android. Please share your disappointment in the following threads so that we might see a fix ASAP. Guessing they are facing law suits for hearing damage if it is not addressed quickly.

OK so I used the search on here and googled this to no avail... I'm currently on slimkat 4.4 for the flo but I've also experienced this on 4.4 on my d2vzw... When I use my Bluetooth headphones to listen to music or watch a movie the volume is either extremely loud or too low... There seems to be no comfortable middle ground... I was wondering if there was a way to edit the build prop or a 3rd party apk I could use to fix this... I've tried to mess with DSP manager but I can't seem to aquire the volume level I desire... Maybe this will get ironed out with time... Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated...
I was having this same problem that I posted a few posts down from yours. The volume on the lowest setting was extremely loud. I put paranoid Android back on and now it's back to normal. I haven't found anything that fixes this yet so will stick with 4.3 til they fix it since I use my headphones often.

Workaround for playing music is, Play Music > Options (3 dots thing on the top right) > Settings > Equalizer > On, then put everything to the bottom. Still kinda loud, but at least it won't bust my ears.
My issue was with movies not play music. I flashed a different rom and it works fine now anyways hehe

So I've been having some problems in general with bluetooth performance. A couple of days ago I was trying to sync a wireless bluetooth speaker with my 5X and the 5X couldn't even find the speaker when the speaker was in pairing mode. My tablet and HTC ONE do not have problems finding the speaker. I finally got it pair after multiple attempts. I then launched Amazon music and tried to adjust the volume after audio was playing. I clicked the volume down button all the way to zero and the speaker was still quite loud. Clicking the volume up button didn't really do anything. The audio gets slightly louder, but it's not very discernible unless you're comparing the audio at 10% versus 60-70%. Anyone else having similar problems?

They changed the way volume adjustments work with Bluetooth devices.

For me, I noticed that I just need to control the volume on the device and not try to mess with it on the phone.

Thanks. It looks like this may indeed be a bug though, whether it's with the accessories or Android OS.
, there seems to be a bug in the feature's implementation on some Bluetooth accessories. What users are experiencing is an extremely loud volume, even at the lowest volume setting. With the slider moved all the way down, the volume remains too high, which makes the accessory unusable if you enjoy a more temperate sound. And remember, this is a unified volume setting, so even if you press the headset's Vol- button, nothing changes

When I paired with my speaker the music turned on so loud I nearly crapped my pants. Didn't even realize it was possible for the speaker to go that loud.

Not me. Everything working as designed. BT speaker paired just fine.
I'm having bluetooth issues - from day one and 6.01 doesn't help. My 5x often doesn't play through previously paired devices. It goes through the motions and shows a connection but no sound. I usually have to switch bluetooth off then back on again. Really annoying.
Hmmm, I haven't had a problem with the situation you described. I am currently having an issue over what audio is being pushed over bluetooth. In my car I am listening to some music via bluetooth, and I get a phone call during playback, I swipe right and answer the call, but I answered the call and my music resumes and I can't hear my call. Very odd but a consistent issue since the 6.0.1 update.
Since I accepted OREO onmy Nexus 5x, I also have BT issues both with my car multi-media and my earphones. I tried reboot the nexus and it did not help. I"ll try to repair the device.
Anyway to increase the car Bluetooth volume? Pixel XL is way too soft compare with all my previous phone. Thanks.

This may be a dumb question, but did you try turning up the volume on the phone? I know my phone likes to reset the volume to really low when my car connects sometimes. After I turn the volume back up on the phone it's plenty loud in my car stereo.
Failing that, there's a "Disable absolute Volume" option for Bluetooth audio in developer options you could try.
This happens to me when I have connected to my bluetooth headphones and turned the volume down. When I connect again in the car the volume stays at what the headphones were at and I have to turn the volume up on the phone. After that it sticks until I use my headphones again.

Ok let me try option. Thanks.
Headsets tend to control the bt volume on the phone. Cars often have their own volume and don't send volume commands to the phone.

I agree, I've found myself turning the car volume up 3-4 more turns than I used to. Not a huge deal, but definitely noticeable.
I've noticed the same thing on my Pixel XL while on bluetooth in my car but I'm also using the new Android Auto app as well.
Yesterday i noticed that while driving home from work i had low volume on my music (Car radio & phone were max volume) but while using Google Play music it went to a commercial (Don't pay for it) and started went very loud. After the commercial was over it went back to low volume?
Does this remind anyone of the TV commercial having loud volume issue to get your attention?
Can anyone confirm my suspicion?
Bluetooth gain/volume has always been an issue for me.
I make a lot of DIY portable bluetooth speakers as a hobby and BT input volume is a huge issue compared vs. analog input.
I finally found a Chinese BT amplifer manufacturer who was willing to mod their amp's BT input with higher gain. This helped considerably.
My old JVC car stereo was awful. I was always having to boost the BT output gain.
My 2015 Kia Optima's Infinity stereo doesn't have the same issue. BT volume is fine.
If you are willing to root and try a mod on your phone, the Viper4Android mod lets you raise Bluetooth gain:

Hope this helps.

This is not working. Hopefully the update will resolve this.
One of the new features in Pie is that bluetooth volume should be remembered for different devices.
When I use my Bose Soundwear I want volume to be at 25% and for my Plantronics headset I want it to be at 90%.
Last night I used the Bose and this morning I turned on the Plantronics and the volume was only at 25%.
Has anyone else had this issue?
I've never had Bluetooth volume be remembered, not even on Pie (on two different phones). I think individual devices have the ability to force a default BT volume, as my BT headphones always change the volume to 50%, regardless of what it was at last time.
I just set Tasker profiles to get my volume where I want it and it never fails me.
+1 for Tasker setting volume. I listen to the volume at high levels when mowing the lawn/snowblowing but much lower when I'm at work. Tasker lowers it back down for me so I don't blast my ears.
I was using this app before on my Note8 but was hoping to not have to use an extra app on the Pixel.

It's probably not a bug then.
This feature on Pie has been working great for me, Bluetooth remembers the last volume for two different cars and two headphones.
