Got my oneplus yesterday finally after 11 days from ordering.
One thing that is annoying me is on my old phone which was a htc one m7 I use to be able to hold down the back button to kill the app. This means it wouldn't even show on my recent apps menu
On 5t I went into the button setting but there is no option to kill an app while holding the back button.
Is there another way ?
I use gravity box but it requires Xposed
Why would you want to kill apps? Killing apps means if you want to re launch the app it will start from beginning costing you extra cpu power. Anyway if you don't want to root you can control your background activity on the developer settings

For me, it's just nice to have when an app is misbehaving. It's quicker than going into the app info and force stopping it from there. Sometimes my WhatsApp gets disconnected from WhatsApp web on my laptop; a force close of the app tends to fix the issue, and having a long press shortcut seems to be the quickest/most efficient way to do so

I can cope with that one Tap opn the signal icon in the top, when the boc drops down, there is an option to turn on 'flight mode'. This stops it receiving a reception.

I believe this is only done by adding third party software. I bought Pocket Plus and can highly recommend it. I think this also solves your 'stopping programs' problem too.
I wondered the one about switching apps myself actually. With my iPaq there was a iTask button, or something like that.
if you have pocket plus (can highly recommend as well) tap and hold in the top right hand corner and it will have a list of whats running, select from there.
This a great little tool for closing all your running programmes - and it's free. (doesn't close activesync though)
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/closeall.shtml
for closing and switching tasks i'm using DTSysview.
Assigned the IE h/w button to it, makes things easy to manage
there are many task apps you can use. it really comes down to which app you prefer, freeware or shareware. i use wisbar advance because of the pretty skins, the option to minimize or completely close any running apps from the taskbar. i am also a fan of cascading start menu.
i use psShutXP to restart my unit, turn off the back light, and shut down the unit.
lastly, i use HandyLauncher for quick access to my Top 10 apps.
HandySwitcher
I am using HandySwitcher to switch from application to application and closing the active applications... It works perfect for mel....
Searched, didn't find answer. Is there any way to toggle between two apps I'm using without going through multiple steps? I'm currently having to hit the home button, go to advanced task killer, selecting the app that is open that I want to go back to and selecting switch to.
I would rather have something like using alt-tab on a windows desktop of laptop. Even better would be like wktask for windows mobile where it shows the open apps at the top left of the screen and I just tap on the icon for the app I want to go back to and it goes right back to the screen I was on previously in that app.
just hold the home button until the 6 recent app list pops up?
Oh, recent apps, can't believe I didn't think of that. Thanks.
Another option is Multitask Manager. It lists all running apps, as well as recently closed apps. You can set it up to where long-pressing the find button will activate the app.
MultiTask Manager
I think recent apps is perfect. Don't want to make it more complicated. Quick, easy, and simple without adding another app. Although is there an advantage over advanced task killer? I guess I was overthinking the problem and looking for a better software solution when I already had discovered the hard button option, just never used it when I needed it and forgot about it.
Hi guys
I recently discovered that hold back to kill will completely remove the app from memory (not in cached processes) and so apps like Dice with Buddies will not get C2DM notifications (I know it's GCM now). However if I just do a force stop on the "push service" then the notifications work well. if there are no other good options it would be good to have an app that just sits on my home screen that, when run, would just programmatically do a force stop on a set of services.
You guys know of any such thing?
Thanks!
Sorry to say but I am on a HTC phone but this question is for someone making use of a Xperia Ion.
I do know these phones are alright, that's not the reason why I went elsewhere.
Although the ion is a good phone there is something odd with its behavior.
As far as I know now the back key in an open application closes the app and the home key pauses the app.
Paused apps are visible in the recently used apps list, there you can reactivate them and
go further where you left or you can close them by swiping them off the screen.
But this does not seems to be the case with the Ion.
Even when quitting an app with the back key the app gest in a paused state and thus visible in the recently used apps list.
I know developers can override the behavior of the back key so I tested this out with the
stock gmail and stock calendar app and they both are getting paused.
So, is this normal behavior in the Ion,
if yes how to quit an app without quitting it in the recently used apps
if no, how to solve this.
The xperia ion is on android 4.1.2 and full stock, so no problem with custom roms

Well back button should keep going back untill exit, it will not pause
But depending on the app, if you go home then it should pause, some games or heavy apps will be closed and some are designed to close when not active
Its like this on most androids
Hope this answers you question, if not ask more
EDIT: recent apps does not mean it is active, just means recent apps
System apps are never closed or often never,

Well, also tested on Samsung galaxy mini and then home button pauses, back button closes.
Long press home on Samsung shows recently used but you have a button to show open apps.
If you where going back with home key those app(s) are in the open apps list.
Htc reacts as Sony.
But what about multitasking then on android, is it possible to leave an app in a paused state?
What about open recently open apps, what about an app in this list, for me it seems the last state open from to app has been saved?
say 2 things, new to oreo and s9, last phone was an s7. anyways, if i had a program running in the notifications, say for my motorcycle gps, tomtom, i was able to long press the notification, then go to app data and force stop. not seeing that anymore.
Trying to find the fastest way to force stop an app running, that has a notification. for example this one says connect device. I am not trying to hide the notification, but force close it when i don't want it running. for example this app gives me live traffic, sometimes i want it, sometimes i don't.
hope this makes sense, and thanks.
anyone have any ideas here, to force stop an app.
thanks
I'd make use of the built in Device Maintenance. If you enter this menu and click the 3-dot menu on the top right, you can add a shortcut to your Apps List. You can then place this wherever you want on your homescreen. You'll be able to quickly enter the Maintenance sub-menu and then put whatever you aren't using to Sleep, immediately.
There may be a way to add an icon to your lock menu to jump right to it (using a 3rd party shortcut app,) but I haven't swam that far in the sea yet.
recents, long press the app icon on the left, wait for the i info letter to appear on the right, press i, force stop.
this was posted elsewhere. seems like the ticket !!
