Anyone else have issues charging via computer USB?

I seem to have an issue that my phone never charges whilst connected via USB to my Macbook Pro. I have also tested on a Windows machine and have the same issue.
I was able to charge my Sensation over USB and I know that one of the ports on the Macbook has a higher output for charging but it makes no difference.
The phone states that it is charging but the percentage charge continues to drop. If I switch the power off it will charge. There doesn't appear to be any big battery drains though. I ran for a day and twelve hours over the weekend and charged at 40 percent.
Has anyone else the same issue?
Btw, I am on stock 4.0.2, rooted but not running anything else that should have any affect

How old is your macbook pro? Or more to the point, do you know if it has USB 3.0 ports? If your higher output ports are just 2.0 (and your computer is describing them as such compared to the older 1.0 spec) then you are stuck at 0.5A (half of wall charger output). USB 3.0 goes up to 0.9A, but I don't know if there are any catches in terms of devices needing to request the bump.
When you say that it charges if you switch the power off, do you mean it only works if you actually power down the phone? As in, leaving it sleeping plugged in, it still won't charge? Keep in mind that actively using the phone with the brightness turned up high could result in overpowering the .5A current in.
Unless you know someone else with a GN you can test you might just want to take it into the store and have them try it there/consider a replacement if it's defective. Also worth exploring if it's just the battery is defunct, if you have access to another one.

Really? Source?
Doing a tad of research it seems some models front (closer to the front) USB port has slightly higher output than the back (closer to the screen) USB port because the back one shares a USB controller with internal components.
It couldn't be noticeable though, they're both simply rated at .5A .
Has anyone else the same issue?

I charge my 4.0.2 stock GSM Nexus off of my MacBookPro almost every night without issues. Using both an HTC cable and the Samsung cable.

MacBooks don't have USB 3.0. Its always been standard USB 2.0 afaik.
I'd also recommend that OP check different cables and computers, or different batteries if possible.

I have the exact issue. If I charge via USB on ANY laptop/computer it takes forever and if I'm using the phone as it's charging it uses more power than being supplied so it loses battery life even though it's plugged in.
I had this problem on my iPad too. It seems they need more power to charge but can still "trickle" charge off of a standard USB port.
My batter was at 10% last night, plugged it in to my laptop and sent some texts and left the display on (dev settings), about 10 min. latter it was at 4%.

See the screenshot....Status 'Charging' however as you see from the lower part of the screen, it has clearly stopped charging some time ago (about 3 hours earlier!)
It turns out that the CABLE was the issue....I thought all Micro USB cables were created equal, evidently not
Any ideas what the differences are in micro USB cables and how to identify which ones 'work' and which don't? I bought 10 from ebay which all seem not to charge from USB

I've had no problems charging via my pc using Samsung or Motorola cables. It charges slower but it still works.

Car/Wall usb charging question

Hi guys,
I have a question regarding charging. Just bought the 5X recently and man, I had no idea of how many options were out there to charge your phone. Basically I have the OEM wall charger that came in the package. Now Im shopping for a regular USB to type C cable. I had a car charger in my car that I used to charge my Nexus 4 in but correct me if im wrong, it wont charge as quick since it probably doesn't support 2.1A, right? I saw this one on ebay and was even more confused.....

You will only get fast charging from a charger that supports it.
Your computer and current car charger will charge "slowly". Make sure you buy a usb c cable that meets usb c specs.

My OEM wall charger that came with the package does fast charging. Theyre rated at 3.0A
Ive already ordered the USB C cable, and its 2.0A, what are max speeds the 5x needs for fast charging?

There is no usb 3.0 slot on the charger.
While it can output 5A it may not comply with the fast charging the 5x uses.
You will need to try it and see.

hmm interesting, im starting to get what is needed and how this whole fast charging happens. So I looked on ebay and came across this

I assume this would work with whats mentioned in the article you posted. But the cable I ordered says 2.0 so Im not sure if that will not let it fast charge in the car?

Yea, you can use "Ampere" to measure the rate of charge. Coincidentally, Android Central just wrote about this app this weekend:

[ALERT] TYPE-C PORT and TWO accessories FRIED

So I was charging my phone like usual. And I was slightly aware that there was a compatibility issue between QC 3.0 and Type-C.
HOWEVER, tonight at about 12amish GMT. I kept smelling a burning smell... Which I thought it was my cat. but then when I decided to charge my phone using my Lumia 950 XL charger. I discovered the port had been burnt, and the cape and phone where burning ****ing hot! I felt the type-c plug from the charge against my top-lip and I got burnt...
I'm writing this a bit panic-y as I want everyone to just know TO BE CAREFUL. I'm not sure what exactly caused this as I have looked after the phone as if its my baby. Always case and a screen protector. I have a feeling this is down to compatibility!?
Anyone with similar issues, suggestions or such?

The Lumia is c to c right? If so, yeah there were lots of reported issues where people used various c to c cables with a c brick (most were pixel or nexus chargers that I saw) that had the same issues you did. Think it ended up being that the 10 doesn't have the right safe checks in place to stop charging at 100%, and it just keeps trying to push 3 amps even when fully charged (could be wrong about that though)

mmm.. the phone was charging from almost nothing... I think I was charging it from about 20% using a zuk z1 cable plugged into my computer that was connected to a usb 3.0 port. the cable is 3.0 standard and the phone is 3.1 if I rememeber

You don't Push Amps, you pull em, you Push Voltage.
The phone decides how much amps it wants to draw.
More likely missing cables inside the cable or bad quality Connector.
Was it an original Microsoft Cable from the 950 or bought afterwards?
P.S can't see the pictures. Just my bad Internet?

doesn't appear the image tag correctly grabbed the microsoft drive images so i deleted the image format. Downside is you can't see them inline.. but the upside is you can click them to see em..

UPDATE: ok so, I've taken it back to the place I brought it from and they sent it to the repair centre (carphone warehouse). They've turned round and said tis water damage but I disagree as I do not like to keep my gadgets in places that are potential for issues. Will be taking it up with the shop. failing that, Trading Standards.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME; does water corrosion look similar to that of corrosion caused by excessive current or connection shorting?

I had a ps4 controller do the same thing. it was cause by the cable was not 100% plugged into the controller port. it was still able to charge a bit but after awhile I noticed a burning smell... same results

I would be looking for blue oxidation if it was water damage.

By any chance green oxidation would indicate electrical corrosion from shorting of the contacts?

Benson Leung warned people, that type c to type c charging should be avoided.
Even HTC10 does not follow the official usb specification and uses QC so best any user can do, i using legacy USB type A to type c cable and using charger with USB A output port. Also all cables must have 56k ohm resistor, cheap one come with 11k resistor and could damage power charger or the device. Check Bensons google+, he even linked to Tronsmart chargers which were out of specification and should be avoided.

Yeh, I became aware of this when the QC3.0 was released. Though, my assumption was because I'm connecting between usb type-c to the phones type-c it wouldn't charge off the QC3.0 standard.
Initially, I was using the Nokia type-C charger which came with my Lumia 950XL. It charges at 15 Watts (5V, 3.0A). I had used this the majority of the time and hadn't gone wrong. Sometimes I'd use a portable battery charge which charged at a generic 5V 2A AND a Samsung nexus 10 charger which was a usb female and charged a the same rate.
I would've assumed (also judging from the new releases by QUALCOMM) that QC3.0 phones would either charge of USB standard OR take advantage of QC. I've never used type-c to type-c charging only because I never had the capability. There is a slider in the settings menu to use USB3.1 standard but again, never used it. always done this through a usb3.0 to usb type-c cable.

HTC10 charges normaly from any standard legacy USB port like your old HTC M7 usb wall charger or notebook usb ports. QC3.0 uses data lines in usb cable to provide power and this method is not approved by the USB consortium, thats why you can not also communicate with your phone in QC3.0 mode, because there is no free lines for data left. You can either fast charge, or switch to standard usb mode and transfer files without QC3.0.

so would this mean I will need to set my phone to file transfer mode if I want to charge from USB?
Also, for reference, is there a way to disable quick charge 3.0 (which I assume may be present in the build.prop file OR am I thinking more noob like)

No, you must understand how usb and QC3 works. I will try to explain it as simply as I can.
Legacy USB have 4 cables inside, two for data transfer, one for curent and one for ground.
If you plug your phone to the usb in notebook, you can charge and transfer data in the same time.
What QC3.0 does, it is using the data paths for providing additional power, so when you plug it to your QC3 charger, it uses all the data routes/cables in USB only for additional and faster charging, so the data connection is blocked in this mode.

Ok, just came back from Carphone Warehouse. It looks as if the phone has corroded more during the time I've given it to them and the time its taken for it too come back.
The colour of the corrosion was of a greenish hue.

I'm awar eof this, but my question is if it can be disabled on the phone or not.

Never heard of disabling QC. I do not think that HTC will provide any tool to disable built in chipset feature.

Slow charging on PC

Not sure if this has happen after the 8.1 update, but on my pixel XL I'm not longer able to get fast charging via usb type c to type c cable. I tried another cable that is known good and still doesn't work.
Factory usb type c cable works from wall outlet to phone. The phone will fast charge. Phone will not fast charge when connecting to pc (usb type c to type c. no adapters)
I tried to factory reset just now. Never unlocked the bootloader on this phone never installed any custom rom.
Safemode still does slow charging
Factory reset still does slow charging
Used SkipSoft Unified Android Toolkit to install drivers - still slow charging
Tried to change device from "charge only" to "transfer files" - slow charging
Any ideas?

that's normal. fast charging doesn't work with a PC, their USB ports charge at a lower rate...

It did however did work at some given point. I was able to do fast charging on my pc. motherboard is a x370 SLI Plus from msi.
Edit : never mind you are correct. I was wrong. Thanks for the heads up.

all good. glad u sorted it out...
if you've ever noticed custom kernels that advertise 'USB fast charge' as a feature; those kernels can charge via your PC's USB ports faster.... it still doesn't give you actual fast charging, but it gives it a boost.

Looks like ever since the newest release, my PCs only provide "Charging Slowly."
What's the deal?

I think you are mistaken.... read my posts on the subject. USB ports don't support rapid charging and never have... there is a kernel patch that allows faster charging, but even then, it's still not as fast as a charger.

I am clearly not well-versed in the technological aspects of charging, I'm just telling you what I have seen and experienced with this phone.
- When I plug it into the wall - phone shows "Charging Rapidly....... XX%"
- If I use a crappy charger or regular USB cable - phone shows "Charging slowly....... XX%"
Up until a few weeks ago, my PCs (work and home, same motherboard, same USB-C outlets) would charge it blazingly fast - the same, if not faster than the wall charger.
I even used Ampere app on my phone which showed 1200-1500 mA charing.
Now Ampere shows 310 mA max wtf

USB 3.x has a Max current of 900mA. that's in the specification... by default, your pixel would still only be using 500mA, but with the kernel patch that I spoke of; it bumps it to 900mA ...
I forget at what capacity, but basically it ramps down charging, after it hits a certain capacity, which might explain the 310mA in Ampere...
i don't know how you possibly could've been getting 1500mA out of a USB 3.x port from your PC, that exceeds the spec by a very large margin... not saying it didn't happen, but AFAIK that shouldn't even be possible.

What to do if my phone does not charge using airline USB?

In my last two international flights (United and Norwegian), I noticed that my OP3 doesn't charge when plugged into in flight entertainment system USB. When plugged in the cable, I also tried Ampere to see charging levels but it indicates the phone is not charging.
During flights, after noticing the issue, I tried the following when plugging the cable, with no luck:
turning the phone completely off/shutdown
tried using two different cables (one standard and the other DASH), both failed but otherwise work fine if used in any other USB port (e.g., workstation).
tried different USB ports (where others were charging their devices).
I also asked others to try charge their phones on the same port, two different phones charged fine (one was iPhone and other Samsung).
I am running official OOS 5.0.1 with blu_spark kernel. The phone used to charge fine in flight few months ago, so not sure if it's a software issue...
Any thoughts or solutions?

I'm sure the USB port doesn't supply enough amperage to charge the phone. It's probably just like my truck's radio USB port, it will not charge my 3T.

if that is indeed the case, then, on a technical note, how much amperage OP3 needs?
(I am asking because, as I mentioned, on the same port iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8 were charging...)

I have no idea. Maybe someone else would know that or you could ask OnePlus support.
