Location Smart Lock Stopped Working... - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So I'm not sure when, exactly, it stopped working because by habit I tend to utilize the fingerprint reader every time I pick up the phone...
But I just noticed that despite working when I originally got the phone, the Smart Lock I have set for my house (location), it's now not remaining unlocked when I'm home. I'm always having to unlock the phone even when I'm here.
I checked to make sure location was on... I've tried both the High Accuracy setting as well as the Battery Saver settings. And I've checked to make sure my home address is still listed in the Smart Lock locations.
Anyone know what might be going on? I don't think I changed anything but maybe I did something by accident? Anyway, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried to delete and add the location to smart lock again?
I've had to do that with bluetooth in the past, maybe it will work with this.

Exchange interference
This same issue happened to me...but I discovered it was due to adding an exchange mail account allowing my company to manage my security which disabled smart Lock.
I am using the Outlook app instead of exchange now.

The outlook app does not enforce the Exchange requirements for device administration?

Delete and re-add your "Home" location, through Google maps. NOT through settings. Again I emphasize through Google Maps. This is what I needed to do to get location based Smart Lock working properly again.

This will work periodically, but it's extremely frustrating the other 90% of the time. I've deleted and reset the locations, add new ones from different parts of the house, etc.
Any new suggestions? It hasn't worked well in for a long time. I have the pixel 2.

Anybody fixed the issue? For me it seems like it stops working after midnight, I set it up(well, again) during the day and it works perfectly, I wake up in the morning and its not working at all. I saved the location using google maps but it didnt help. Happens every day.

I've had similar issues in the past. After some Googling, seems like many people have the same problem. Seems like an issue with Smart Lock itself. It's been hit or miss for me and works whenever it feels like it.
I recently switched to Carbon ROM and it's been perfectly fine so far, not sure if a clean flash was the fix or the ROM.
The best troubleshooting step that has worked for me in the past is disabling then enabling Smart Lock in Trust Agents.

Wow, Thank you!
I had been hating on my Pie P2-XL because it kept locking inside Home.
Your suggestion cured it.

Data connection keeps turning on?

the Data connection is turning on on a regular basis and I can't find any scheduled tasks set up to access the Internet, but some rogue program is? any ideas any one and/or any way I get find out what is causing this.
I have the same problem.. And I'm a little bit tired!
I wrote on this thread with no answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529622
I have a flat data plane but I don't like that PDA face things on his own initiative!!
me neither, I'm in charge - not my new toy! Lets hope someone helps us out this time round.
I had the same problem. In my case the 2 apps connecting to the net were Google Maps and Funambol.

Well, I don't use funambol.. And anyway: there are no program in task manamager! So: something is going wrong with manila..
I had the same 'problem', but my brother suggested to turn it off and on again. It did work as far as I could see.
I think it may be google maps causing this, but I'm not sure (and don't really care, since this 'solution' worked).
Any number of added apps can be doing this (Worldmate live is a bad one for example) or any apps still running and not shut down.
Obvious things to check first are:
Do you have automatic email check set?
Have you disabled auto-update in weather and stock quotes?
This drives me crazy too, afaik I have turned off everything yet it keeps turning on... A fix would be highly appreciated!
its the activesync...
turn it off, i mean, delete the settings and you'll be fine. activesync triggers automatic data sync, hence turning on the data connection
I use ActiveSync and don't have this problem. If it was ActiveSync, why would it cause the problem for some and not others ?

Well.. I tested all day.. And I can say that I solved the problem!!!
I think that last time I closed gmaps.. I answered in a bad way to the question about updating Glatitude..
So: Gmaps seemed close but it was updating my position on the net!!!
When i opened gmaps i could see my avatar in the map.. So i understand that it was still online..
So.. I think I've solved!
Anyway we need a "netstat" on pocket pc...
Thank you for your advices.
Glad you worked it out.
I put this in the developers forum a while back. Maybe someone smarter than me will work out a solution to this sort of problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530634
As with the poster here. You will have an application that you have inadvertently set to autoupdate. The only thorough solution is to go through every program on your phone and check each setting meticulously. Alternatively. Back up your personal data and hard reset. Then reinstall your apps one by one, testing for an hour after each one. Eventually, you will find the offending app and can work on finding the setting in it to stop it connecting to the net.
Hi all,
the thing is there are dozen possibilities: activesync, alle gps-stuff, all auto-updates. So instead off looking up all these settings, you could also use the nodata.cab - works fine (phone need to be unlocked!)
greetz to all
Kjoere
thanks for all the posts, haven't checked for a while. I have checked everything and noting is set to auto update so very strange and annoying. Will try the nodata.cab - if I can find it?

Thank you! That is very interesting.
It also can be the build-in Facebook app in Contacts in manila. It has feature to automaticly update in 2 hours. At least, I had mine turned on as default.
The only reliable and "ultimate" solution is really Modaco NoData as mentioned above.
On the other hand not taking third party apps in count, basic traffic of HTC device is nothing to be scared of. Updates for weather, stocks and A-GPS are just few bytes in size... Obviously, GMaps, mail autocheck, Messenger etc. are different story, but none of these are started on their own... BTW, ActiveSync has nothing to do with Internet with one exception - Exchange mail sync, if you have any.
What you have to understand, is behaviour of the active data indicator (small G, E or H next to signal strength). If it's there does not mean, that any data are transferred at the moment. It just indicates opened data slot with current brodcasting tower in the cell. It could stay opened for hours after trasfer even just of few bytes. It closes usually only for two reasons - your phone switches to another cell (and has no reason to open data slot again) or the tower is busy and closes inactive slots to gain more capacity.
Except few rare cases in some coutries you're charged only for data transferred, not for time of the connection and therefore it doesn't matter. In Europe from 1st of July (some new EU limit) one Mb shouldn't cost more than 50 cents and with these basic updates you will NEVER reach it in one month...
Obviously, roaming is another story, but in settings of the standard services you can limit updates just for your country.

Issue with 'Locations', unable to find current location unless GPS is turned on

I am in need of Android guru assistance. Currently Google Maps app will not update/detect current location and repeatedly request 'Please enable a My Location source in system settings'. Location will only be updated if GPS is turned on (which was not required until this happened)
I have ticked the all the settings under the 'Locations' tab, but still the same occurs. Several apps are affected by this i.e Foursquare (unable to get location), Waze (crash upon launch).
The issue surfaced after I accidentally 'killed' the Maps app using HTC task killer, and tinkered with the Locations Settings under the Maps app.
Tried to return to default values by cross referring to a HTC Butterfly, but problem persist. Anyone has any ideas? Thanks in advance
Device : HTC One X
Rom : Stock Sense 4+
Unrooted phone
There is an option in settings to reinstall gps service. Setting > location >reinstall
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Hi Vceck,
I've already tried reinstalling as suggested. Problem still persists. Google Maps (and apps relying on its positioning) will not work with solely wifi/mobile network and requires GPS. It's quite a weird one, since I believe GMaps positioning can use wifi. Or am I wrong?

Hi internetjlmb,
Already did as you suggested, no change. Thanks for the tip tho'.
Now a grimmer issue surfaces -- the 'Maps' app is draining the battery, crazy fast. Unplugged my phone from charger at7.00AM with minimal usage (two short phone calls, no mobile network / wifi enabled), by 8.00AM battery was down to 91%, with 'Maps' taking up 71% of the usage. Screenshot is attached.
I have to disable the 'Maps' app for the time being as everytime I enable it, battery goes down and phone overheats, I kid you not.
Already sent a feedback to Google, but not hoping for any response. Anyone else knows how to solve this predicament? Just to confirm, whenever we 'tick' the 'Google's location service' under the [Location] tab, should it ask any question such as 'Are you sure?' or anything. Mine just ticked and did nothing.

Hi zodiark,
Same issue here. My Location can only be updated if GPS is activated. Which is a bummer. I don't think GPS is necessar to just update location. Or am I wrong on this?

In my case I have two options to enable google location services. One of them asks me to accept the terms of service of google, but again nothing happens.

Same here. Only the 'Location & Google Search' tab will prompt a question when clicked. I had to disable Maps app due to its excessive battery usage.
Hi,
Anyone with a solution to this? This annoys the heck out of me. Is it a phone or Google settings issue?
Thanks.
Issue with recent Google services update
Having exactly the same problem as described by VDread. Folks over Android Central are reporting similar problems and suggest that the problem is with recent Google update and that google is aware of this and that they are working on it.
I was going to do a factory reset but perhaps I settle for disabling Maps for now.
Hi Kreisi,
Thanks for the info. At least me and Zodiark arent the only one with this issue. This however beckons the question : why only some units affected, as opposed to a global scale issue. Hmm.
I have just realized that I am experiencing the same issue. It could also be responsible for the poor battery life on my phone...

Well it comforts me to see that there are others and that this is Google related, and that they're working on it. It would be more annoying in the long run if this was just another messed up update by HTC and we had to wait for the next one, hoping it will make the phone usable (like it was supposed to be). I do however hope the fix will come SOON -- my phone seems to be awake all the time, all the location-related services are non-functional, the battery life is piss poor.
Svucinic811,
Disable the 'Maps' apps for the time being. That has been draining my phone's battery. That should help alleviate the heavy usage -- as the phone tend to overheat even in sleep mode. Weird error. Reports from Android Central says that a certain folder/data was somehow misplaced by Google when HTC phones are updated. Could be a Sense v Google settings issue.

Thanks, will do and see if it helps. It's not like I care about the stupid Maps anyway...I've had my share of nonsense like this, my next phone will be iPhone or a dumbphone.
Yeah, I've read that thread @ Android Central Forums and that "Network Location" app is in the Downloaded Apps section for me as well.
Same problem here. Can´t get a location and the battery consumption is in the highs!
I had to freeze maps with Titanium Backup for now. Are there other devices being affected by this "bug"? Anyone know if this is google side or HTC side?

Apparently also affecting the One, One S and even the EVO.
Some LG phones are also affected. Could be an issue between Google vs ROM settings.
My phone returned to normal after I disabled the 'Maps' apps. The downside is, I can't use Google Now, Google Maps and any apps thats related to those. Even Waze. Total bummer.
According to Android Central (http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...w-keeps-saying-my-location-service-off-2.html), the issue is the recent Google update caused some data folders i.e Network Locations to appear in user's 'Downloaded Apps' folder instead of the Android system.
Factory resetting wont help either -- most have the issue resurface after several hours of use.
Owh well, the issue turned my smartphone to a semi-smartphone.
I seem to not having this issue..
or that's just me that didn't realize it? -_-
although yea i must turn on GPS to be able to pinpoint my location
even if i want to update current location i need that stupud GPS to be on

How does it behave without a BT connection?

Work no longer let's us carry our phones with us there for the 360 will spend a lot of its time with no phone connection. I'm assuming it will still keep time? I only ask because an early Sony smart watch couldn't. What else? Can you still set timers use the stop watch? Can you use apps that don't require Internet connection like a calculator?
Anyone?
I don't have one but if it's like the g watch you will be able to still use the functions you asked about.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
That's what I would expect.. But you never know these days. I just didn't want some usless brick that says please sync all day.
Thanks
Yes, I can still check the time, set a timer, use the stop watch, etc. I haven't found a calculator app that works on the round display, yet.
It seems like voice recognition doesn't work, but anything you can run from the menu does. So you can set an alarm, timer, etc, though you have to use the touch interface which may not be as flexible.
I hope they give the option for offline voice recognition at some point. I think it would be very advantageous to be able to do basic tasks like setting reminders, alarms and creating notes etc. these could easily then sync once the phone is reconnected. There's no hardware reason why this wouldn't be possible it will just require implementation.

Also, if you put it in airplane mode, it doesn't even give you the voice prompt screen... instead it immediately shows the list of activities / apps you can do. Voice on that screen does not work at all. Too bad!

I'm pretty sure this is not possible. When you first take it out of the box, it asks for a language, after selecting one, no swiping, tapping, or anything else can get it from a screen saying to download the Wear app on your phone. It simply will not do anything until it does.
That's my experience, anyway. I couldn't get anything until my phone synced.

Yeah I talked to motorola customer service and they said that it won't ask that if it doesn't detects a android phone nearby. Hope this is true.
You have access to all of your watch apps like still. All apps that depended on your phone (like google now) won't work anymore. Basically what you'd expect.

Smart unlock safe places not working?

I can't get Smart unlock to work with safe places. I've set my home address, which shows fine in the list of safe places, and it shows correctly in the map. But the phone keeps asking to be unlocked even if I'm at home.
I've tried rebooting it, turning off and on the location... Location seems to be working fine.
Any advice on how to make it work?

Well I tried that, but it's not letting me since it says that location has been already added, and I can't remove it, only turn it off.
One thing I've realized is that every time I reboot the phone I get a "Google play services stopped working" error. Could that have anything to do? Even after saying that, if I go to running applications it shows there, so I guess it just starts itself after crashing.
BTW whrn i installed the lolipop update I did a full factory reset.
EDIT:
I cleared the Google play services data and rebooted, this time it didn't crash. However safe places still are ignores and my phone keeps locking when it shouldn't

That's the feature I wanted from lollipop after leaving my Nexus 5.. Ive done just as a suggested.. Weird. Only other thing I'd try is to disable smart lock and a lock screen code, then setup through smart lock again.

My smart lock works intermittent. I would say a quarter of the time the smart lock operates. It's a shame, it's a really nice idea.
Wait, I may have found a possible solution http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...-lock-trusted-places-not-working-anymore.html
Update: Yes, uninstalling Google play services updates and then reinstalling updates followed by a reboot solved all my issues.
smart location has issues its not very accurate so if you want it to work at your location you'll have to add areas surrounding your location
as per Google's recommendation if smart location does not work try adding your location via pin tips.
Hi, I didn't want to start a new thread. My smart lock feature stopped working around 2 months ago and I already tried everything (except for a factory reset) and I can't get it work. Neither trusted device nor places work. I hoped that the recent AT&T update (installed it yesterday) would help, I deleted all trusted devices, wiped the cache partition, added bluetooth devices again with no luck.
Any idea how to get it work? I do not want to factory reset just to find you it did not help. Thank you.
It didn't work for me before, the recent update fixed it.

Smart Lock on Pixel XL Oreo not showing Work as option

Hey guys,
correct me, if I am wrong, but wasn't there an option in past Android versions (maybe) that you could select your workplace as Trusted Location? I tried doing that with my Pixel XL (Oreo) and it only let me select my Home (Zuhause). Thanks for your input!
You don't see an option for add trusted place below your home address?
Here is what it looks like to me
I see the option to add another place but wasn't there an option in previous versions of android that you can add your workplace as well if it is in Google Maps?

I'm not sure, haven't used trusted location in a while, I've owned smart watchs that keeps my phone unlocked for the last few years
I was able to fix my smart Lock for location. I'm not sure exactly which step fixed it but here's what I did.
Deleted data from Google play services
Deleted Google location history
Turned off smart Lock and turned back on
Re set finger prints
Opened Google maps, noticed my location and my home weren't exactly the same although usually they are. I added smart Lock locations all around my house.
Re booted phone.
After locking and unlocking I got a screen saying my phone's smart Lock is leaving the phone unlocked.
If someone can pinpoint what works for them so there aren't so many steps, please share.
