When I first got the phone out of the box face unlock was super fast, not even seeing the lock screen. Then there was an update where it was improved but I could see the lock screen for like half a second. Now all of the sudden it feels like how it was out of the box, not even seeing the lock screen and pressing the power button brings me right in to the phone. Was there some sort of update or does it get better over time?
For me its instant. Like maybe 0,1-0,3s slower than the fingerprint sensor. Really great. Running FreedomOS. I hope that this feature can be brought to custom roms.
Maybe it's because you've set a live wallpaper? Or you've set a wallpaper using another launcher? In these cases I've found that the face unlock gets slower, meaning that you can see the lockscreen for a short amount of time before the phone fully unlocks.
Only when using a non-live wallpaper and not setting the lockscreen wallpaper through another launcher, only then the face unlock is truly instant and actually skips the lockscreen completely. Which is kind of a bummer as I really like the pixel live wallpapers, but the delay makes it feel much slower.

Not 100% true. I use Nova launcher with custom lockscreen wallpaper and I don't ever see the lockscreen, it's completely instant.
There was a post here somewhere that said a way to set it up so it worked. Set the lockscreen wallpaper first and then set your homescreen wallpaper last. Set one at a time not both at the same time.
I'm not sure if this will work with live wallpaper or not but it's worth a try.
My OP5T is pretty 50-50 when is comes to face unlock vs. fingerprint. Rooted, stock ROM, action launcher.
But I prefer the fingerprint unlock, as it jumps straight into the desktop vs. Pressing the power button, which displays lockscreen for a Split second before the face unlock kicks in.
Also I am used to pressing the power button to see notifications, need to get in the hang of double tapping my screen.
That is why I have face unlock disabled, just a preference.
yeah its fast but can use some improvement, sometimes when i turn on and it does not catch my face right away, i could look at it and still not work until i turn off an on
it will work with other launchers. i use nova launcher, it works fast, but face unlock doesn't work if you had enabled the gesture type in nova launcher prime like the double tap to turn off the screen. you have to use pin or fingerprint scanner.

it works with nova launcher. face unlock doesn't work if you have the nova launcher prime and enabled the double tap to turn off the screen in the gesture selection. it asks for the pin and fingerprint.

Maybe an odd question.
Is it possible to have the slide to unlock screen available if you use a patter to unlock the screen?
I know if you use a pin the slide to unlock still shows.

Not on an aosp rom, no. On a sense rom you can. Just remove the htclockscreen.apk, and you'll be left with the vanilla unlock screen. If you have a pattern enabled, it still comes up after unlocking the slider. (Again, only on a sense rom)

I'll see if I can't get it added as a feature request for CM.
Try widget locker. Any widget you can add to the regular home screen can be added to the lock screen, including music controls, etc.
I have mine set up such that all the apps I normally use are available from the lockscreen. This way, don't have to multiple tap to get to them.
Don't mind the duplicate calculators..

Does that cause any lag? When I tried widget locker a long time ago, it lagged. My phone on wake up.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The only lag I notice is when booting, and possibly the first wakeup after sleep after a reboot. There after, it seems to wake up relatively fast (1/2 second?) Is it an instant wake, no, but I can live with waiting a split moment to have the functionality of not having swipe then tap, or swipe then tap twice to get to something.
Like you, I tried it some months back and thought it was a piece of garbage. I was reluctant to try it again, but got spoiled with CM7's multiple sliders on the lock screen. Having returned back to sense for other reasons, I missed that functionality.

Thanks for the response. I may consider giving it another try.
If you plan on using this with cm7, keep in mind, actual widgets on the lock screen only work with the standard system theme. With other themes, the widgets disappear after a reboot.

It's stupid little bugs like this that annoy the crap out of me. So much for final I can't stand the green, so I just have shortcuts on the lock screen. In fact, I could almost tolerate the green, but it changes the theme of the status bar pull down widget to a light grey instead of a more black.

Yea, I saw that yesterday.
WARNING: Currently there is no known way to reset the lockscreen back to Sense (without wiping your device)! Only continue if you really want to remove the Sense lockscreen!
I'm sure you've noticed all the posts on how to install a custom launcher, or how to get back the stock lock screen. Sadly, a lot of methods on this require root. Well, while I was prodding around my One, I found a method of disabling the Sense lock screen. Here's how I (think) I did it:
1. Download a file browser (I recommend ES File Explorer)
2. Navigate to /system/app
3. Find "HTCLockScreen.apk" and copy it to /sdcard
4. Navigate to /sdcard and try installing the APK (you'll need unknown sources enabled for this).
6. It may or may not say that the installation failed. Ignore that and restart the phone.
7. Enjoy!
Now, this is what I think is causing the HTC lockscreen to be disabled, although I'm not sure. Post a response with your results.
~~~~~~~~
Now, for those of you who want the stock launcher instead of custom one (like Nova or Apex), here's an APK you can install to get just that: http://goo.gl/cwdtHO
Hope this helps some people!
Nevermind.
Shouldn't, in theory at least, when you try to install that APK, it is placing something in /data/, which is writeable, so when the APK that is in /system/ checks, it finds two versions, one which has the permission to override the default, and one who doesn't?
I could be completely wrong there.
Customization worked for me. What I had to do was remove all existing widgets (swipe down from home screen > long press and drag to remove) **I think I had to do this twice** and then my lock screen was blank no clock just the lock icon with swipe to unlock.
Then go to settings > personalize and select the "widget" lock screen option, select settings and pick the widget you want. I used Chronus (CLock from CyanogenMod). I then locked and unlocked my device and the widget now shows on the screen.
This app is pretty good and very customizable. Good job! One question though, is there any way to enable double tap home button to activate camera like the native lock screen? I know if I swipe left, I can access camera there but the double tap way feels a lot more quicker to access. Just wondering. Not a deal breaker if it's not possible.
Hey guys,
while I'm extremely happy with the phone (awesome screen, perfect fingerprint location IMO, general form factor), I've come across three little problems:
1.) The biggest "flaw": Using another launcher / wallpaper than the stock one causes the face-unlock to be slower. And if you set another launcher / wallpaper, there will be a noticeable delay when you turn on the screen: The wallpaper will take longer to appear on the screen than everything else.
2.) The time between hitting the power button on the right / using the double-tap-to-wake feature and the screen actually turning on is almost a second. Coming from the 3T btw, where it almost felt instant.
3.) I'm not sure whether it's a flaw but it's just something that looks strange: The greyish navbar when using a dark-themed app. (I wouldn't really call this a problem, it's just a consistency flaw you notice, while operating the phone.
So first of all: Do you have the same impressions? It might very well just be my phone and you don't encounter these problems. But in another thread I already read about the face-unlock time taking longer, when using another launcher / wallpaper.
Thanks in advance for any replies and experiences!
Thanks Lum_UK, but I already tried that one. I find it to be a bit slow in overlaying the "correct" color, i.e. the overlay isn't always there from the beginning when opening an app.
And I'm not interested in rooting anymore.
You can force it to just black in that app, which may be preferable to the grey, and avoids the delay issue.
Otherwise, probably not much you can do unless a future OOS adds new options.
You can turn off the animation in Navbar Apps as well. That way the correct color will load much faster.
I don't use Face Unlock, but everything turns on instantly for me.
However, the nav bar color oscuro the worst and I can't wait to get back to a good AOSP firmware. OxygenOS is great and all but missing very important features I just can't live (comfortably) without.
Hey guys,
I just wanted to give a heads up to you: I just discovered how to avoid the 'wallpaper-lag' while turning the screen on when using a non-stock wallpaper or non-stock launcher:
1. Force stop the OnePlus launcher.
2. Uninstall any updates to it.
3. Use the launcher you like. (Tested with lawnchairs and Nova)
At least for me, the wallpaper lag is gone!
For me this doesn't solve the problem. If the wallpaper is set through another launcher (Nova in my case) and if I use Nova, when using face unlock, i first see the lock screen for some split seconds and then it unlocks. If the lockscreen wallpaper is set through the OnePlus launcher itself, it skips the split seconds on the lockscreen completely and goes directly onto the homescreen which feels much more instantaneous. Also if I'm using a live wallpaper, like the nice new Pixel wallpapers which I wanted to use, the problem occurs even when setting the wallpaper through the OnePlus launcher and when using OnePlus launcher itself.
I've uninstalled the OnePlus launcher updates and tried to force stop it (although this wasn't possible as it seemingly wasn't even started to begin with), but nothing changed.
And yes, the wallpaper will often times take longer to appear on the screen than everything else, exactly like Dimitry from Hardware Canucks demoed in his review:
https://youtu.be/Kf93Nz_bgFs?t=7m48s
This looks very glitchy in my opinion but is of course rather nitpicky.
And as Sangraphim said, the time between hitting the power button on the right / using the double-tap-to-wake feature and the screen actually turning on is definetly prolonged when using face unlock - but that's probably by design I guess, because it starts the front camera first and waits a bit to detect a face before actually turning on the screen.
With my S6, the wallpaper would rotate (and crop to fit) when I forced it into landscape mode.
I use Nova Launcher, Tasker, "Rotate" app.
On the S9, when I force landscape, the wallpaper stays the same.
Display > Home Screen > Portrate mode only (uncheck this)
You should be able to do it with a 3rd party launcher, though?
Ah. That's grayed-out in my S9 settings and I don't see that option in Nova Launcher - hopefully it's there somewhere.
Hi guys,
I have the same problem on my S9+. Wallpaper doesn't rotate. Neither in Samsung Launcher nor in Nova Launcher. Tried the setting you suggested - nothing changed.
My S8 has the same settings and it works on that device. Any ideas?
Yes, I meant to follow up and say the same thing - even with the stock launcher, changing the Display setting just allows the icons to rotate - the wallpaper remains portrait. Really bummed that the wallpaper can't rotate to landscape. Android should allow that kind of customization.
Android does allow it I suppose. As I said, it works on my S8. Therefore I think the source of the problem is either related to Samsungs S9(+) or the carrier modifications.
What does it say on your phone for carrier softwareversion? Mine says DTM/DTM,DTM/DTM where my S8 says DTB/DTB/DTB
Can anyone confirm that wallpaper rotation works on their S9/S9+? Doesn't work on mine (Xeo). Perhaps on another carrier or ROM?
No. I switched to DTB but still doesn't rotate.
I've just spoken to Samsung's consultant and they said that phone ROM doesn't provide the possibility for wallpaper or live wallpaper to rotate...
That worries me a lot as I have KLWP (Kustom) and Tasker preset that need wallpaper rotation for them to work properly ;( ...
Perhaps some kind of MOD could bring this back to life ...
Nah, MODs are not an Option (Knox trigger)
in your opinion, the solution to allow wallpaper rotation can be somehow found (by for ex. custom ROM) or is it rather permanent and i should rather focus on finding other solutions for my presets?
Anyone ... Guys, as above, permanent no wallpaper rotation or can be somehow done?
If any want to get Samsung to fix this, they should call and make a support ticket, which is what I did. This is one update that totally halted my app release which was suppose to be this week. Make the call everyone!!
Have the same problem on my Verizon Galaxy Note 8 only after applying the April security update patch. Wallaper rotation worked fine on all launchers (that could rotate) before. Even if you applied a wallaper with Samsung's wallpaper applier, it would rotate in Nova or Smart Launcher. Now wallpaper rotation is completely broken. The launchers will still rotate (except Samsung's but the stock one has never had that ability on the Verizon Note 8), however the wallpaper always remains portrait regardless of launcher or wallpaper applier.
Verizon and/or Samsung messed up the wallpaper handling in Android with the April security patch.
This is the only place online I've seen this issue even mentioned. I really wish it'd get fixed.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 on Xfinity Mobile. Latest update broke wallpaper rotation so this is a Samsung issue I believe.
same situation here with the T-Mobile note 8
Ditto, but I am experiencing this on a US Unlocked Note 8 (SM-N950U1)., and is continuing on the may security patch. I have done a factory reset and the problem was not fixed. I contacted Samsung several times and eventually they redirected me to their research team, who I have yet to call.
I experience envy every single time one of my friends rotates into landscape and their wallpaper rotates accordingly. I never knew just how much I loved wallpaper rotation. F.
Obviously the problem is not vendor specific as we have had several vendors represented in these posts and I can add AT&T to the list as my S9+ will not rotate my wallpaper either although my S6 did so just fine, despite the fact that the Home Screen option in Display settings is grayed out and untouchable on it as well.
I believe the answer is for all of us S9 owners to bombard Samsung with trouble tickets to get their attention. This may not have the impact of the Note7 meltdown problem but it is obviously very annoying to a great many people.
I am quite used to my S6's background rotating when I put it on my magnet mount in the car and now with my 9+ that pleasure is lost. At least the rest of the screen items (except the dock) do rotate, but the aesthetic is just not right.
I hadn't thought of using Tasker to straighten this out but according to the posts I have read elsewhere Tasker solutions aren't working either.
I can confirm, that this also works on my galaxy s9 XEO - rooted - G960FXXU1ARCC - just edited the file with ES File Explorer and after reboot wallpaper rotation works again - checked on stock launcher and "Lightning Launcher".
Thanks for great tip
