I'm on a new D850, and I haven't had to do the whole root-from-scratch-and-install-TWRP in years
Browsing around the forum, it looks like things are vastly more complicated since stock Lollipop to do so
Any advice as to how to get there quickly and efficiently? I'd prefer to do most of the work from my device without a computer. Or to use my Mac. I can access Windows if need be, though.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I recently signed up for a new Sprint contract and got a free Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (Sprint model -- SPH-L520) however, everything I can find relates to rooting the GT-I9195 and GT-l9190. All I want to do is root it to be able to run apps that require root, I don't necessarily need a custom ROM loaded on it.
I do know some programming, though the languages I know probably wouldn't help much for this, and consider myself an advanced user of many desktop and server operating systems (Windows, Linux, some BSD). Although I am new to Android I'd like to give it a shot, if it's not too far out of my reach.
I'm really just looking for good starting guides and some tips from the pros. I've done a lot of Googling and researching on these forums but I haven't really found any guides that starts from scratch. I'm am willing to take the time to learn even if it takes a while.

Do you know where I can find the software to install CWM recovery for Galaxy S4 mini SPH-L20?
Please advise
I know this may seem redundant, but make sure you have the correct Samsung drivers installed (reinstall them and restart your pc). Make sure your PC recognizes your phone in debugging mode.
As I am new to the rooting world, I just have a few questions:
I purchased the Developer Edition, as I wanted to root my phone.
However, I am on an Apple computer and wanted to know if anyone could help me out.
How do I flash recovery for the M8 and install SuperUser on an Apple computer?
Thanks for the help.

There are tools that offer easy 1-click operations; but they're mostly WIndows only. I guess, the easiest way is for you to install Parallels; and download a copy of Windows. Go get the Developer trial copy directly from Microsoft (if still available?). Sure, it's a hassle to setup your workflow, but once you've got this going, you'll find it easier to root/flash your M8. Also, Android File Transfer on the Mac is… crappy (to say the least).
Here are links to the tools I mentioned:

Thank you this, my brother.
I actually have Parallels and I'm running Windows 8.1.
I didn't think to try this, as HTC drivers were a bit off for Windows 8 before.
Thank you again. My device is up and rooted!
Hi,
I purchased my wife a google nexus 7 last christmas and it has android 4.4.2 on it.
Wifi version only
It is 100% unmolested in anyway. She simply uses it for web surfing
I purchased her a new 10.1" tablet that will be here shortly so I will take the nexus 7 from her LOL.
To preface the rest of this post, my phone is a samsung galaxy s3, probably close to 2 years old, and am quite famaliar with rooting and installing custom roms, etc all with help of xda of course.
Once my wife gets her new tablet, I would like to root the nexus 7 and install a clean, simple, basic new rom that is de-oxed and rooted. I'm a pretty basic user and like to keep a clean minimal os, etc.
#1 The nexus 7 shows that there is a system update, I assume it's an os update but she never bothered to install it? Should I before doing anything else? Will this have an impact on rooting and installing newer roms?
#2 I assume the wug's toolkit is what I should to root, etc
#3 What is latest version that I can install that meet my needs for a basic, clean, rooted and de-oxed android version. I don't need anything fancy. Just quick and clean and maybe something that aids with battery life? I assume custom recovery is similar to the phones and that one can still use titanium free version to uninstall unwanted programs.
#4 Since I never used her tablet, is flash an issue these days with android and tablets?
I will use the nexus 7 for basic web surfacing and things of that nature. I would love to eventually install ubuntu touch as I only use linux on my home laptops but that is a convo for another day.
Any suggestions and comments are appreciated.
If there is something you need to ask to give me some suggestions, please do ask.
Thanks
1.- Yes, it's a system update. It's a Nexus so installing it won't have any effect on your ability to flash a custom ROM in the future.
2.- NO! Never, never, NEVER use toolkits to do anything, ESPECIALLY on a Nexus device. More problems are caused by toolkits than any other reason, and relying solely on toolkits will hinder your ability to fix anything should something go wrong, simply because you just won't know how to fix anything. Nexus devices are the absolute easiest devices to root, and are the perfect devices to use to familiarize yourself with ADB, fastboot, and just the basic ins and outs of that side of Android. You will want to use fastboot to unlock your bootloader, and install a custom recovery. From there, rooting is as simple as flashing SU, and you will likely be prompted to do so after flashing recovery. The whole process only takes a few minutes and will provide an invaluable learning experience. Read the stickies, that's where you will find the guide and the bulk of the information you'll need.
edit- this thread should get you started- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381698
3.-Read the OPs of all the ROM threads in development and flash whatever you think has the features you are looking for. The functionality of custom recoveries are near identical across devices, just make sure you flash one that is specific for your device. You will find the threads for recovery in the Dev section as well, possibly in original development. Yes, you can still use Titanium.
4.- No issues with flashing, as long as you flash the proper files for your device. Nexus devices are VERY difficult to brick, so don't be afraid to get your feet wet.
I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Happy flashing!
Edit: and just an FYI, Ubuntu Touch is absolutely horrible and isn't even close to being a viable mobile OS. You can use MultiROM to install and dual boot it so you can try it out very easily but trust me, you won't like it one bit.
Thanks for the info, anything I need to be aware of before I start having fun once I take hold of the tablet. I get the small one she gets the larger one, hahahaha. Happy wife happy life.
I keeping reading about the boatloader needing to be a certain version before going to the newest os? No?
And I will stay away from touch, since I am a purely linux guy for anything computer or laptop thought it would be worth asking.
Also, what's the deal with odin and tablets. I use it all the time for my phone.

The only caveat I can think of is to make sure you unlock your bootloader BEFORE you set up your device, as the unlocking process wipes everything.
I'd much rather have to deal with a smaller screen than an unhappy wife, you're making the right decision . And actually, I personally prefer smaller tablets as they are easier to manage and are better for gaming. With the exception of my Surface Pro 3, all my tablets are smaller sized. I have the 2013 Nexus 7, the iPad Mini Retina, and a Dell Venue 8 Pro which is an awesome 8" x86 Windows tablet that runs full Windows, not the dumb RT version.
I'm not the right guy to ask about the bootloader. I don't like Lollipop so all my Android devices are staying on KitKat. I haven't flashed any ROMs on the N7 in ages so I haven't done any research on bootloader compatibility. If you have a link to where you read about it, post it and I'll look into it for you.
Trust me, Ubuntu Touch is not worth your time. I flashed it on both my N5 and N7 just to mess around with it and promptly deleted it. It isn't worth the space it takes up on your device. It's that bad. But if you want to see for yourself, just install MultiROM, it has a built-in option to install Ubuntu Touch as a secondary ROM. You should install MultiROM anyway, as it gives you a painless method for trying out new ROMs without losing your current daily driver setup.
Odin is specifically for Samsung devices so it doesn't apply here. Familiarize yourself with ADB and fastboot, as that's how you'll be doing a lot of your mods.
When you say wipes the device, do you mean installed apps and date but nothing OS related right.
Since I don't do anything major with it (once I get it) and my wife didn't either I don't think wiping is an issue.

It just wipes all your user data, the OS is still there. It's basically a factory reset.

tried the apk and desktop in ptp and mtp several times. all failed
From the reading I did, the 11A OTA blocks most of the previously used root methods, such as Kingroot or LG One Click Root. I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote in another thread to save time:
Just used the method in this thread about 3 weeks ago, and it worked. It's a bit painful, especially if you're not familiar with Linux (I am not), but I made it work after several hours of tinkering. You will need a computer running Linux, or a virtual machine running Linux, unless you just want to use the stock rooted 11A OTA that the OP uploaded to the thread. Personally, I didn't want to lose all of my settings and such from my pre-root days, so I copied my system.img from my device and ran the root inject program.
Bottom line, I know very little about computers, Linux, or the "guts" of Android, but I like to tinker with things, and I was able to make this work with my very limited knowledge.
So i just got this tablet out of the blue, didnt realy expect it and its not something thats really needed but it could come in handy. I figured id mod the hell out of it so it would be ready to go when i did decide to use it. I figured it being a name brand that doing all this would be easy. I havnt even looked into ROMs yet id figured id start with some custom recovery TWRP. Everything has been a complete disaster tho.
I had the thing for less than a few hours and done had it bricked and then about 10 more times after that. Ive been able to unbrick each time using the LG Flash Tool 2014 and a stock android 4.2.2 rom. I have the newer stock roms up to 5.?.? whitch is what i think was oroginal on it when i got it, but i figured downgrading would make everything easier. I still cant get anything to work right ive watched dozens of videos and posted and there so much crap out there its kinda hard to know what to use and to try, Were my particular tablet works into this time line.
Ive tried simple one click stuff that i think was the original tools. Ive tried the apps on the device. Ive tried hooking up to the pc. Using the command line on pc and on phone. Ive tried a million and one diffrent tools, programs, and files. My whole desktop is filled up with crap. The one thing i am able to do is root the drvice using kingroot but i beleave thats the one app you guys dont realy aprove of, but its so easy to use. I tried using some other root methods to see if that would help, but it didnt.
I read some were about the bootloader being locked and that being the problem, So i tried different things to unlock that but no luck. Then there was something about needing to downgrade the bootloader to the 4.?.? version or something, IDK. I am so lost any more idk were to go from here. I only get a new android device every few years because as long as it makes call i dont care and i dont tend on modding it all that much because theres the possibility i could be with out a phone for a few days. ive always been pretty good at modding stuff over the years but it just seems like android stuff just gets harder and harder over the years. Its starting to be more trouble then its worth but i guess thats the point. Ive always love doing this stuff but i just dont have the time like i use to spend all day looking this stuff up and getting stuff done but i just dont have the time to do that anymore. My eyes and back cant handle the hours starring down the keybored like they use to. Sometimes taking brakes screws up my concentration and it takes me a minute to get back on track.
Anywase like i said im kinda lost not sure were to go from here and i just figured id post and see if anybody would through me a line. If not well its cool ill figure it out eventually or just use it the way it is.
Dont have original info - I know I should have wrote everyhting down before diving in, but i didnt. This info is from the current stock ROM installed

O its from Verizon
Did i post this in the wrong place.
I encountered the same problem but i've solved it by downgrading the stock ROM because the recovery is locked with last version of stock ROM.
