Nitpicky observations - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Loving this phone so far, but there are a couple things bothering me. The first is no double tap recent button to bring up last used app. Why is this not in OOS? I use that all the time and it's not there.
Second is nav bar color and style. Anyone able to get a subatratum nav bar theme to stick? Why is the default background white with no way to change it?
Anyway have tricks to solve these little annoyances? What are your picky criticisms of the OP5t so far?

I'm pretty sure the double tap for recent apps is suppose to be on there. Have you checked the settings as you can set actions for each button
The best way around that is to use an app called navbar apps. You can set I to change colour occording to the app or set a solid colour

The double tap recents for the last app is working for me. I didn't change any settings for that, it just works.

You have to set it to "no action". This will set the default action which is the most recent app.

Tested double tap recent and it works.

Oh wow, so no action actually has an action. Genius. Thanks for the help

Yeah, I think that double-tap on the multi-task key bringing up the last app has been part of Android for some time now. I could be mistaken.

Screen Rotation Shortcut

Sorry if this exists somewhere else (I exhausted my search keywords and couldn't find it).
I am a recent convert to the ZL side and, for the most part, really like the phone. One thing, however, that I really liked from the Samsung Galaxy device I came from (and even the iPhones before that) was the quick way of locking screen rotation. Is there a way to bring that functionality into my ZL? On the Galaxy Note I had, all I needed to do was bring up the notification slider and select Screen Rotation lock. On the iPhone, if memory serves, I doube-tapped the home button and went all the way to the left and select the lock icon. On the ZL, I have to go into the settings, then into the display setting, then click on the Auto-Rotate screen option.
I appreciate any advice.
Thanks!
Install this and select the rotation toggle and check the others.. They are cool.

I recommend installing "ScreenRotate (Small App)"
It will add rotation toogle to small apps bar (which shown when you press task switcher button).
Its more convenient that having to pull down notification bar, take space in notification area or having to go to homescreen to use widget.

Sorry missed your post. That's an awesome app I always searched for notification toggle apps but they were always super ugly, missed some toggles or didn't work with the notification bar!
If only it could be be above the time and I wish the icons were smaller just like stock toggles.
Maybe I cam charge them myself

[Q] large back button on nav bar

So I really want to mod the Nav Bar (forcing menu button to show, changing size, etc) but I only found a way only by enabling nav bar mods in GravityBox or Xblast tools. But when I do that, the back button on the Nav Bar becomes unusually large compared to other buttons. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? If you need a screenshot I'll upload one.
Thanks in advance.
Apparently I'm not alone on that - I'm running ViperOne and the same thing happened when i wanted to do some color-modding. I gave up on it and shrank it and it evened out - I went to 65% originally, but now am at 55%. Not sure where the line is, but if you shrink it, it will even up with the other two eventually.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I have even tried using SoftkeyZ but when I do that it does the opposite and shrinks the back button to the point it looks ridiculous.

I would love to find a solution to this as well. Don't like having to downsize the nav bar to make them even.

Thanks for the tip! I use GravityBox for its handy Navigation Ring mods. Can Dynamic Navbar modify the Nav Ring and/or work with GravityBox when it is modifying the Nav Ring? Also, is this safe allowing blanket permissions without seeing the source code? Sorry, I'm not a dev, curious what more informed people know about this…

I just went ahead and tried this. Didn't work for me. When I opened Ultimate Dynamic Navbar, most of the options were unreadable—they just had an ellipsis, the last one or two words of the option description, and then perhaps a checkbox. You couldn't read it. I tried it in both portrait and landscape, always with GravityBox disabled and after a full reboot. Doesn't seem to work correctly on m8 for whatever reason.

Again I'm not a dev, but I wonder if this—implemented in the mod—would fix it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2452822. I'll post this in the GravityBox thread I guess…

Pixel Launcher DP4 HAS A PROBLEM WITH GESTURES

Sorry for caps but really, it seems nobody noticed it: I see dozen reviews and everybody consider this Pixel Launcher's behaviour totally normal.
I just flashed the latest DP4 release.
I've never used the gestures in the DP3, so I decided to try them.
For about half an hour they worked perfectly.
- swipe on the navigation bar -> multitasking
- swipe just above the icons -> app drawer
So far everything is ok.
After half an hour, I do not know how, the swipe on the navigation bar or above the icons, opens in any case the multitasking, having therefore to make a double swipe to access the drawer.
Of course this kind of operation would not make sense.
This thing happens in every review (I'm looking at them all to see if anyone has not had this problem with the DP3) and no one has wondered why it works like that!
I have deleted Play Store data, Play Service data, Pixel Launcher data, there is no way to get back to the initial situation.
Some idea?

I don't think this Pixel Launcher is intended to be used in this way.
Sorry for my conceit but I know what I've seen very well, and I noticed it because I've never used gestures in DP3.
Trust me.
The normal behavior is:
- swipe from the navigation bar -> multiasking
- swipe slightly above the icons -> app drawer (without making the multitasking appear, as if it overlapped, as it happens now)
This behavior makes sense and I saw it.
It seems as if the launcher took two gestures in one, or as if the launcher took the gesture of the navigation bar up to the first line of icons.
Short swipe up = multitasking.
Long swipe up (or double swipe) = app drawer.
No.

So I had a not expected behaviour of the launcher?
The problem IS NOT on the double gesture from the navigation bar.
The problem IS in the double gesture above the first line of icon, like the old app drawer opening method.
Made myself clear?
I do not care to be right: I know how it worked and it was perfect.
Honestly, if the intended behavior is actually this, with the double swipe, I do not like it at all.

No. Nothing you describe is unexpected to me. It worked from the pill, or above, all the way up to the arrow above the dock in DP3, just as it does in DP4.
Since you yourself didnt use it in DP3, I dont see how you can be convinced its not right.

Simply because for the first half hour It worked as described in the OP.
This is the current scenario: now I open multitasking by swiping on the navigation bar AND swiping on the little arrow above the first line of icons.
Actually I have the same gesture TWICE, in two DIFFERENT areas of the launcher.
What are they for?
I'm trying to explain that it makes no sense, and that for the first half hour, swiping the small arrow above the first line of icons, I opened the drawer and not multitasking like now, forcing me to do a further swipe to open the drawer.
I explained myself well?

Not really sure what to tell you, other then previously you were doing a longer swipe, regardless of where it started.
It works 100% of the time for me, just has it has since DP3, and in the exact same fashion.
Just as it is pointed out in the article I linked earlier.
If you do a short quick swipe up anywhere from the arrow or below, it opens multi.
If you do a longer continuous swipe up anywhere from the arrow or below, it will go right past multi to the app drawer.
Did the exact same thing in DP3.
I don't know... Probably I'm mad?
Let's be clear: that double swipe in the center of the screen ARE USELESS. The second one I mean.
By the way I want back that behaviour.
I'm searching for someone that encountered the same.

I agree, the double swipe sucks.
But as I have pointed out, you simply just swipe up a little longer a single time and it goes to app drawer, not sure why that isnt sufficient for you.

Ok guys.
I've probably encountered a giant bug... Ican't reproduce that perfect gesture combination described in the OP.
I've done a full wipe and a full setup, the double swipe for app drawer is stil there.
But swiping past halfway through the screen does get the app drawer correct?

No man, no way.
Swiping slightly above the first row of icons open the multitasking, for the app drawer I should do another swipe up.
Double swipe for drawer, in summary.
And this is THE NORMAL Pixel Launcher behavior.
Probably I've found accidentally a giant bug.

Kill App option for Nav bar?

I have seen a few discussions about the topic of getting the Kill App option for the Nav bar. Holding the back button would be the ideal implementation for me. I find it much quicker than going to recent apps and flicking away the app that I want to kill.
I have not found an answer on how I might do this on the Pixel 3. Seems like Oreo had a Developer Option that was removed in Pie.
A Gesture app seems like one approach, but I would like to hear from others on how you do it?
Thoughts?

Hey, do you mean that you want to kill all recents by long pressing the back button?
If so, I had a quick look and basically a third party app can't really do that because in java the REMOVE_TASKS option is a signature-level permission. This means the app needs to be signed by the same signing key as the device firmware. In short, a rom developer could implement this, but not a third party developer.
In short, maybe a request to your rom dev is the way to go!

If you're rooted you can setup Active Edge to kill the foreground app (I have it setup for a long squeeze to kill the app) or use One Plus Gestures and enable kill foreground app for one of the gestures.

I just want holding the BACK button to kill the current app on the Screen.
It is a setting that GravityBox allows and comes in handy to quickly exit an active application. I hope we see this feature on the Pixel 3 XL custom ROM that will be coming out.

Awesome. Are you using the Tulsa mods too? When I install the SystemUIedgebase.zip for the Tulsa mods, I lost all my other mods (center clock small ampm, small LTE, no GPS pin and 3Minit).
I would love to get the EdgeSense and the Status bar mods working at the same time. I have a similar question posted on the Tulsa Mod thread.
EDIT: I had to install the Magisk Mod for Edge Sense and now they both work! I dont see the Kill App as an Action in the Edge Sense app. Is it called something else?
EDIT2: I had to enable ROOT for the EdgeSense app, now I see Kill App. YEAH!

Another suggestion - All In One Gestures! It has a long-press back to kill app option, though I should note I'm using it having both rooted and reverted to the old, 3 button nav bar as per Mishaal's guide. Plus, doesn't work quite as perfectly as it did on my old galaxy phones with capacitive keys, but it does the job most of the time...

I'm not sure what All-In-One does when you've still got the gesture navigation pill installed, but these are the settings I've got enabled having reverted to the 3 button navigation (https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-android-pie-gestures-google-pixel-3/):
You of course have to give the app root access, but otherwise no special settings as far as I recall from setting it up. Hope this helps!

My pleasure! It is a different app. I'm coming to the Pixel from a 3.5 year old Galaxy S6(!), and I just restored the app from a titanium backup. I think it was designed for phones with capacitive buttons, which might explain why it's no longer officially available. For this reason, it doesn't work quite as perfectly on the Pixel as it did on the S6 (the kill app function doesn't seem to click with a few apps). But it does do the trick in most cases. For me, I'm so used to the long-press gesture that it was worth going back to 3 button navigation for this alone, and worth sticking with it despite some imperfections in All-In-One when it comes to the Pixel. I suppose if you're still on the gesture system, you'll have to weigh up whether its worth removing the pretty new interface (and the Pixel launcher along the way, as Mishaal explains) for a functional yet slightly deficient alternative...
Here is another explanation

Question Keep Nav Bar On?

Just picked up a Galaxy Z Fold 3 for a decent price!
Is there a way to keep the Nav Bar always on as with certain apps it drives me crazy when is disappears as when I swipe up to view the Nav Bar it doesn't always show up or clicks something else in the app etc! I would prefer it to always be on. Thanks

There certainly is. Search for navigation bar in the settings.
I never use gestures because they are misinterpreted by apps way too often. We have oodles of screen real estate on this bad boy, too.
Edit: using Good Lock (from the Samsung store) you can seriously customise that navigation bar as well.

I never use gestures because they are misinterpreted by apps way too often. We have oodles of screen real estate on this bad boy, too.
Edit: using Good Lock (from the Samsung store) you can seriously customise that navigation bar as well.

Sorry I know that. I already have the Nav Bar on. But what I'm hoping for is to leave it on so when an app like Amazon music is open it doesn't go into full screen so what I'm hoping for is to keep Nav Bar always there. Hope fully

Ah, I see.
Maybe prevent the app in question from employing fullscreen mode in Labs?

Doesn't seem to work
Also looking for a solution to this. There are no app settings that force the navigation bar to be always on, and some apps could greatly benefit from it.
I've been looking for a solution for one year, I finally found this blog post https://mobilepains.com/how-to-remove-full-screen-mode-on-android/ that recommended installing a third-party Navigation bar app. That did the job.
