2 XL Always on display clock position issue - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hello guys!
I think found an issue on my 'Always on display'.
Normally the position of the clock is close to the central middle, but this morning i found my time has been moved to the up for a distance, so i notice this clock just doesn't look right
i don't know what I've done and i didn't find any setting option.

Did you activate screen saver?
It move the clock around

Thanks for your reply!
My screen saver is active and it has a default option 'while docked'.
Should i turn off them?

it has nothing to do with the screensaver. the movement is normal and prevents burn-in. i'm surprised nobody has said this already.

There is a separate clock with the screen saver that moves it all over the screen.
The normal clock on the ambient display is always in the same spot, just has pixels alternate on and off to lower the chance of burn in.

The screensaver clock hops to a random place every minute. The always-on display clock, as far as I remember, moves one pixel at a time, bouncing around the screen (?).

I find this app indispensable for comfortable reading at night.
Thank you so much for this, I was just thinking last night that even the dimmest setting on the A100 was still to bright

I'm the ScreenDim developer. Screen Filter is free and clever, but it doesn't do the same thing as ScreenDim, at least not on LCD devices. Screen Filter basically just alpha-blends a dark box over the screen, without lowering the backlight level below what the OS normally allows. The result is that Screen Filter lowers the contrast and the color resolution, and in a dark room, the blacks will be gray because of the backlight shining through them.
ScreenDim allows you to both lower the LCD backlight level below what the OS normally allows on many devices and, if that's not good enough, to control the contrast just as Screen Filter does. Furthermore, because ScreenDim allows you to lower the backlight level, it will save on batteries in a way in which Screen Filter will not, again on LCD devices. (On OLED devices, there is much less of a difference.)
Moreover, my testing on my Archos 43 indicates that Screen Filter lowers the 2D rendering performance by about 30%. ScreenDim at 100% contrast shouldn't affect the 2D rendering, and even with the contrast adjust, I couldn't measure a noticeable 2D performance loss.
For real free alternatives to ScreenDim on backlit devices, there are AdjBrightness and my RootDim, both in the Market. Both require root, however. And ScreenDim's dual brightness-contrast adjustment feature is found in neither.
+1 for root dim, I use it and it works well on this tab and my atrix
be careful not to set it to 1 because its turns off the screen but the tablet is still on. i got stuck trying to find the slider to slide it back so i can see the screen again. nice find though.

Tapping random places on the screen should quickly restore the brightness.
Also, if the tablet has volume buttons, you can adjust brightness with them.
Once you figure out what the lowest you can go is, go to Options | Set minimum brightness. Then you won't have this worry any more.

ahem. I'm not sure exactly where those buttons were when I needed them to try to get the brightness restored, but I couldn't find them on two occasions. I had to hard power off.
Great idea but it won't work for me unfortunately. I want something that will turn my tablet into pure darkness except for a small, dimly illuminated, clock on the screen. No matter what I find, an app always has too much backlight on and it bothers me when I'm trying to sleep.
If only I could get this app to interact with my alarm clock app somehow!
Status bar
Is there any way to remove the status bar icon of the ScreenDim?
I thought the app was designed to reduce distraction while using a device, but the icon being in the most prominent spot (upper left corner) draws attention constantly.

[REQ] N9 lockscreen mod

Hey guys!
I recently sent my Nexus in for repairs, and borrowed a Nokia N9 from a friend to use meanwhile. Now I've got my Nexus back, and there's one thing in particular that I miss about the N9 - the clock and notifications on the locked screen.
If you haven't used or seen an N9 in action, this feature is really, really useful - and something I think could be ported to (at least) the GNex.. See attached images
When the user locks the screen, usually on other phones it just goes plain black. On the N9 however (because of the AMOLED screen) the screen is mainly black but with the clock still visible! It also shows small icons to alert the user of new messages and such. To avoid burn ins, the N9 changes the position of the clock and notification icons randomly. It also uses the proximity sensor to "know" when it's in a pocket, and then turns of the screen completely.
So devs, can this be done?

wouldn't this create burn in on the screen? Are you serious that the n9 screen never turns off fully?

Well, to be honest it probably would create burn ins if the screen were on 24/7.. But Nokia has (seemingly) thought about this! (And I have failed to mention it in the 1st post )

Well, using the stock clock on ICS, you can set the phone into a very dim low power mode (as you mentioned). I am pretty sure the clock periodically moves around the screen to avoid burning too. It also hides the softkeys. You just need to tap the screen when it's displaying the clock overlay and it'll dim down.
I doubt it'd be viable for carrying around in your pocket due to the fact that your phone is obviously not locked in this state and it hides the notification bar so you don't have any visual feedback for notifications (besides LED flashing?). :/

Yes, the ICS standard alarm clock offers similar functionality.
As I wrote a few posts up, the N9 always displays the clock and notifications when not in a pocket (or when the proximity sensor is not blocked). But, if you take the phone and put it in your pocket it will completely turn off the screen - it would be a waste of battery to do otherwise.
Regarding the notification bar, the N9 also has icons on the lockscreen as any Android has in the notification bar - it's only showing a small SMS bubble under the clock if you have a unread text etc. etc. You wouldn't loose any functionality with a mod like this, only gain moar
Look at the attached pic in the first post to see what I mean

Yeah I get you, I'd also like this mod, I am quite often finding myself turning the phone on to get the time/see notifications so something like this would be schweet.

Thinking this needs to be seen again I'd love this so much, and I'll help out if I can.
NoLED is a nice software. It must be updated to hide the soft buttons as I can see now
My only concern is the battery consumption because the Android OS is not going to deep sleep mode if the screen is on which means the phone is always awake
Any ideas
This mod would be sweet. I had an old Nokia n95 and like that the clock was always displayed with the screen off.

that's a feature of noled and the most efficient way to unlock the phone. especially if you have noled show a clock at all times as well as with notifications. did cut my battery life by about 15-20% but with some tweaking of settings i got it down to only 7-10% which was acceptable for the added ease of use.

Screen Backlight ??

Hi
I was wondering if there was an app with which i can turn off the backlight like when u click on clock app and put on desk clock mode by tapping or few secs before the screen goes off ??
is there way to toggle that ?
What exactly do you want to do? turn down brightness when on desk clock? that is already done automatically as far as i can tell.
AMOLED screens don't have a backlight. Each pixel has it's own light source. That's why the blacks are so black, the screen is actually off in black areas.

The clock just makes everything darker. The GN doesn't have a backlight anyway, as it's a (super) amoled screen.

AMOLED/OLED screens also burn when left on the same image for a long period, would not recommend using as a desk clock as stated in OP, you will end up with burnt images where your buttons are, and any other static part of screen

The are a few brightness toggle widgets available, android comes with one built-in, power control allows customization of the brightness level so that you can go say from Max brightness to min brightness in one tap. Rom Control in the Android Open Kang Project allows for adjusting the brightness, order, and number of navigation bar buttons independent of the overall screen brightness.

How to tweak light brightness down even further even lower on the S3?

My screen dim level is at 1 and my phone is still too bright. How could I reduce this even further so that sliding my brightness toggle in the notifications bar all the way to low will reduce the brightness even further? Is there not an option or a mod that allows you to pretty much dim your screen to complete darkness?

I see screen filter, the only problem I have with it is its persistent notification. As far as I can see there's no way to remove it. If I could get rid of the persistent notification I would set it to boot with tasker.
Suggestions to remove from notification?
Try lux auto brightness not sure if it has persistent notification or not.

I know about lux too, but it's not what I need.
Is there a way to lower the brightness set by the kernel or is this unchangeable?
Download screen calibrator and it works like a charm, you can also remove the icon from the status bar

I looked into this too, I believe the only option is screen filter or anything like it.. which makes no sense to me.
Lower brightness = better for eyes+battery

Yeah I actually prefer the dropdown notification built into AOKP roms for brightness, but the lowest brightness is too bright. In a room with lights off, reading the amazon kindle before bed is pretty discomforting if you're trying to ease into sleep. Way too bright.
Apparently the only way to do it unless the screen filter author comes up with a way to get rid of that persistent notification/load on startup is to kernel hack, and personally for someone who isn't a developer/programmer, I wouldn't touch an opensource code with a stick
I have the same problem. The lowest brightness is still too high to read something with the lights off.
Hey, I think I actually found something.. do you have cm10? If you do, you can turn on screen filter normally then go to settings > apps > screen filter and uncheck "show notifications". That took away the persistent notification for me.
I don't know if you can do this in aopk.
i have a great solution (with a notification-so i will try your suggestion 386 once my rom is done backing up), but want to make my own personalized "build (apps, tweaks etc) thread". Where can I make it without getting slapped by the mods? In the galaxy s3 general thread or since most of it is can be done on different android phones in the the overall general thread?

Android Q double-tap-to-wake ambient display gone?

I upgraded to Android Q DP1 yesterday through OTA and noticed the double-tap-to-check-phone feature now always displays the full lockscreen including wallpaper. Same thing for lift-to-check-phone. In Pie, it used to show ambient display first when double tapped. I have the Always On Display disabled. Is this a bug?

Yes, the "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone" options are still there, and when enabled those actions still wake the screen, but the wake behaviour has changed, which is what I'm wondering about. When woken, it now shows the full lock screen rather than the ambient display (black background and dark theme) that used to show up in Pie.

It's down to personal preference for sure. I wish they would've made that wake behaviour configurable if it's not a bug.
I wish the same too even in full 10 release they didn't change this behaviour
It's better to wake the ambient display than to wale the whole phone in case you need to check nots.
:good:
Hey all!
I am glad too see somebody else also noticed it. I absolutely adore the clean design and funcionality of Pixel's AOD, but the changed funcionality of double-tap to wake (from waking AOD to waking the whole screen) annoys me. I even rolled back from Q beta to Pie hoping they would not implement this change in stable release. Now in order to see AOD you need to have it on constantly, which actually drains some 1% battery per hour (that actually makes it some 15-20 over a working day's period and is actually quite substantial.), also during the night. I also don't stare at the phone all the time to need AOD all that time - a gentle tap to peek the time, weather and notifications is just enough - I see some of you would agree.
Is there any way we can appeal to Google similar to OnePlus's feedback section?
Hey, has it also become iOS like?
I hate whole iOS lock screen turning on. What a shame
I spent time factory resetting my phone thinking that the missing ambient display settings were a bug, I never thought Google would remove that functionality. The language under the "Lock Screen Settings" sounds similar, but they don't do the same thing since now it just wakes the entire screen. Real bummer that Google keeps removing features.
Yeah, it seem they went almost full iOS on this And it was so good: tap twice - AOD shows, tap twice again on that AOD - the lock screen shows. Why Google, why! At least give us an option to schedule when the AOD can be turned off automatically (like at some hours at night).
And to think I bought the Pixel just a week ago to finally taste the stock Android. It is good, no doubt here (and the phone size and general style is very refreshing from thos behemoths I used from Sammy, OP or Huawei), but OnePlus seems much more thoughtful and practicality-oriented. And what is the more important the pledges from the OnePlus community actually work quite often which I don't expect with Google somehow.
I'm fine with it. Not a big deal.
