[GUIDE] How to root Xperia XZ1 Compact - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello together,
WARNING!!! Unlocking the bootloader stops stock Sony camera from working (takes green pics after) and possibly other things.
There are workarounds for camera but the quality is worse than stock sony. (see step 11)
I finally was able to root my Xperia XZ1 Compact and I wanted to share my experience.
It was a bit complicated, because Magisk did not work at all (older versions did not do anything and recent versions ended up in bootloops) and flashing SuperSU did not flash because missing unzip in recovery.
So I decided to do a little research about the unzip problem. I analysed the install script of SuperSU and came to the conclusion that the installation error was caused by a missing unzip binary (or symlink) in /sbin/ of the recovery. So I unpacked the recovery done by modpunk (many thanks for creating the recovery, I am not yet able to do so myself...) and compared it to other twrp versions. There were two differences in sbin: our version did not have an unzip symlink and modpunk did include something named toybox instead of busybox. I decided to try to temporary add busybox and a unzip symlink to the recovery and it worked.
So here a step by step guide (Basic knowledge of adb and fastboot is required):
1. Install the firmware you want to root with newflasher and boot it once to ensure that encryption is initialized and working. (rooting is confirmed working with version 47.1.A.2.374 and 47.1.A.5.51)
2. You obviously have to unlock your bootloader if not done yet.
3. Install the twrp from modpunk matching your firmware Version.
https://xor.cryptomilk.org/android/...3.1.1-0-lilac-stock-patchlevel-2017-10-01.img for version 47.1.A.2.374https://xor.cryptomilk.org/android/twrp-lilac/twrp-3.1.1-0-lilac-patchlevel-2017-11-05.img for version 47.1.A.5.514. Boot to twrp.
and now comes the trick
5. Connect your device to a pc and adb push the attached busybox to sbin (took it from twrp from another arm64 device cannot remember which).
adb push pathtobusybox\busybox /sbin/ (replace pathtobusybox with the loacation of the unziped busybox for example C:\ )6. Open adb shell
adb shell7. Give busybox the required rights
chmod 750 /sbin/busybox8. Create unzip symlink
ln -s /sbin/busybox /sbin/unzip
Remember these modifications are only temporary so do not reboot before flashing SuperSU
9. Now you should be able to flash SuperSU. I used the following Version : https://download.chainfire.eu/1220/SuperSU/SR5-SuperSU-v2.82-SR5-20171001224502.zip
10. Reboot to your fresh rooted device.
11. If looking for a workaround for camera taking green pics look here (it is for xz premium but works with our phone too): https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/how-to/tip-camera-fix-unlocked-rooted-sony-t3647333
If you restart twrp busybox and unzip are gone, this is only a temporary modification.
I hope this helps the ones of you that do not mind unlocking bootloader without working drm fix.
Many thanks to:
modpunk for twrp
sToRm// for camera workaround

Thanks for the guide. Having gone without it for so long though I'm still in no rush, might have felt differently if we didn't have no-root theming, but we do so I don't.

OMG!
Dude!
Finally ROOT!
Thanks!
I can confirm, that this method is also working with 47.1.A.5.51.
So let's have a look at the camera fix from //strom ^^

Does this method work on the full size xz1?

I Do not know if there is a recovery for the full size xz1...

I thought the full size and compact had the same hardware, similar to the way iPhone and Samsung does it?

I habe no idea if recovery for xz1 compact might work on xz1 because they have different displays.

Good point. Would different displays make a huge difference do you think?

Please DON'T flash the DRM patch for XZP! The secd is different to other devices. It maybe will brick your device, because the TA is different! I'm actually working on the new version of XperiFIX which includes the DRM patch for XZ1 Compact.

I did Not link your drm patch, the link is for the working camera apps without a drm patch...

Any chance you are gonna throw the full size xz1 in the program as well as the xz1 compact?

I just wanted to warn other users before they try some thing without knowledge. There are a lot of users that would try this.
It's just a warning - not related to your link. Only a safety first thing.

Has anyone gotten Magisk to work on their device without running in debug mode, just running it on normal mode?

Nope, magisk does not work, i was able to get supersu to work but not magisk.

I saw this on another post, and tried :
I can do photos with only one app : Footej Camera (actual version : 2.1.9)

Hi, reading all of your isssues about rooting the phone, perhaps may not be yet time to try to root.
Then, I must wait a few time to buy my new phone (XZ1 Compact) and keep my Z3 Compact alive.

Was able to get this working with the current version. Your tip made this phone usable for me again!

Can someone with ulbl test if aptx hd is working or if it's also effected by loss of drm keys?

How to get the google camera for Xiaomi A1 without rooting or flashing?

I found the A1's camera pretty good sometimes, but the stock camera is quite useless, and no other 3rd party app seemed to be able to make good use of the camera.
Is there any way to get a good camera app, perhaps the Google camera, or the Samsung note 8 camera app?
U can't, u have to edit the build prop to enable camera HAL either it would not work.

In that case, how would you suggest on improving the camera? The camera hardware is itself quite capable, but the software is not upto the mark.

The answer is root lol, why u don't want to root it?
There is actually no root required for editing build.prop. You unlock the bootloader, then you can boot (not flash) the TWRP and mount system with W permissions. Pull the build.prop file, edit it and push it back to its place. Then you need to set the permissions of the file through the shell. As the last thing you can relock the bootloader and have the edited build.prop file without having the root.
Google it and you will find the guide.
I tested it myself. It works.

Safer option is to use a Magisk module which does exactly the thing but without having to add the lines into build.prop manually and setting the permissions etc

Does not work. After downloading the proposed update I get installation error at the very beginning. Maybe after restoring the build.prop file the same way as I modified it, it might work.
Once you mount the system as read/write, you can't apply OTA. This is why it's better to use Magisk instead of altering system files directly.

Hey there!
I just joined XDA for the sole purpose of finding this tutorial that I have seen floating around the web lately. But unfortunately, every website has a different version of how exactly this should be done. Do you know where I can find the exact steps to take in order to edit the build.prop without having to root my phone and without losing the OTA updates?
Cheers!

If u edit build.prop means u will break OTA. 100%
just root guys using magisk safetynet pass through.
under magisk hide , chose the apps if you face issue against root, it will open

Hi,
Rajeev is right. You can edit the build.prop this way. And it is going to work. But you are gonna loose OTA, because you need to mount system with write privileges through TWRP in order to modify system file.
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader, root, make some minor modifications (activation of camera api, copying fm radio apk to system folder, etc), unroot, and finally relock (flashing stock boot.img before, of course) ?
I want to have it unrooted because of bank payments, banks apps and streaming TV apps, but I would like to have proper camera and fm radio... Is it possible??
no

How about rooting the phone with Magisk and use Magisk Hide to hide root from those apps?
Htf do you think miui camera is useless. I am a photographer. And find it quit usefull and makes full use dual lens. Have you even tried HHT? Never compare two different apps. HDR+ is google's algorithm. You won't get in miui camera. HHT is miui's thing. You won't get in Gcam. Anyways HDR+ is not mandatory, you can get it from any post processing app.

A1 camera is superb in Day light only. It can't beat Google Camera in very low light. Everyone trying Google Camera here for getting Selfie Portrait mods. That not available in A1 camera .. I am not a photographer. But i can tell as a normal user in low light Google Camera perform really better than A1 camera. May be some 3rd party apps can do that but someone loves Google Camera

Unlock Bootloader

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone has already unlocked their boot loader? If you go onto Sony's webpage to get the code to unlock the phone for the dual sim sony xperia xz2 compact, which code do I use? Any one or both?
Any recommendations on how to root the phone? adb/supersu?
Thank you.

The selected model in list is only to display the appropriate unlock instructions and notices. You can simply select the XZ1 Compact in the list, and the unlock process may also work on XZ2 Compact.
For the record, when the XZ Premuim didn't yet exist on the list, its users could select Z5 Premium or still regular XZ, and unlocking process always worked.
At your own risk!

Yes I did, but this time I picked the regular XZ2!
If you unlock the bootloader, you can install twrp and flash supersu. Don't think there is a twrp to this one yep, but you can compile it yourself.
Just a warning! Then unlocking the bootloader you will erase the phones drm keys without any way to get it back. They will be lost forever! I will wait until a temporary root is available, or a drm hack is in place.
Has anyone ever dared/tried to unlock the bootloader by choosing xz1c in the list? Just curious, I don't own the device!
nope, no reason to unlock the bootloader at this time..
I'd really like to have root.. but I'm too afraid to lose in camera quality after unlocking..

Do you know what happened to the unlocked 2018 xa2/ultra devices? Nothing. No one (includind me) complained so far about poor camera quality or even other lost features (I've also stated this here). So I hope the same happens with xz2/c. Yes, I do also own an xa2 ultra, unlocked BL!
But in case the worst happens, drm-fix will always be available to save us (in theory, ofc)!

This is interesting... I haven't had a Sony since the Z1 compact so I've just been reading the drm drama from afar and if these newer cameras don't lose their quality that's great news. And, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't need twrp to get root as Magisk will patch the boot.img from fastboot won't it? Like I said I haven't had a Sony in forever so I'm playing catch up.
this is very good to hear! really hope nothing will happen in xz2 family either would be simply great to have immediately root and xposed! let's see when first brave guys like you will try thanks in advance

You're right, magisk does the trick, and fastboot pushes the patched boot.img to device.
Maybe we still need to disable sony ric service (sony partitions r/w protection) in the ramdisk before magisk patching step (to be confirmed). Sony also did remove that protection in xa2/ultra firmwares (maybe in xz2/c too)!
You can verify if ric binary is present with this shell command: ls /sbin

No, on the contrary, this service only makes things difficult with custom firmwares/roms.
In terminal, try explicitly searching for the binary file: ls /sbin/ric (if ric binary is present, output will be own binary path, otherwise "no such file..." message)

No way to backup.
Xperifix works only in OREO at the moment, you need to downgrade your phone with my uploaded firmware.
But after taking one shot with the camera in Oreo, you can upgrade to PIE and still use the camera.
But then, without the drmfix, the noise reduction will be deactivated.
You will get the same camera quality like on AOSP without a GCam port.

As I suspected then. Unlocking the bootloader is easy on Xperia devices, keeping drm's (with the downsides of loosing them) are not ? I'll keep it locked until there's a way to back it up or drm-fix work for this device ?

Soon with AOSP/Custom ROM support!
Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place, but I have a question...
What if I want to use TWRP purely for backup functionality on XZ2 compact? No intention to install any custom roms yet.. no need
Is it possible to simply have TWRP only for backups? I do not even plan to root it.. is something like that possible without breaking something? Like DRM for camera etc?
Thanks.

Hello
After unlocking bootloader and flashing twrp (starting from stock 163). Are we still able to receive ota updates from sony?
It seems there is a new(er) 202 version available but if a click ond device's update-check nothing happen.
Is is possible to update via another mechanism or as from now only custon roms?
With unlocked bootloader you need to update via newflasher. You can get the firmware with Xperifirm. You'll find both tools here on xda website.

Hello,
I own a XZ2 Compact (German version) and I want to root it. Is there a way to get root access with the latest build (52.0.A.8.25)???
After hours and hours of reading, trying, flashing etc. I com to the conclusion: This is quite difficult! Maybe anyone can help me with it.
At the moment I unlocked the bootloader and 52.0.A.3.84 is the build nr.
the code
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
leads to the following message
Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot>fastboot flash recovery twrp-xz2c.img

sending 'recovery' (34140 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.806s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: No such partition.)
finished. total time: 0.820s
After some looking/reading I found a thread that there is only one partition in pie, is that right?
So is there a way to have a second (recovery) partition?
Thx for any help!
It's not difficult at all, just follow the instructions in this thread (3. post). Downloads are also linked there.
Works like a charme.

Unlocking the bootloader, anything specific I need to do?

I used to have XZ1 Compact where unlocking bootloader wiped something somewhere and camera stopped working.
Is it the case with XZ2 as well? Do I need to be aware of anything similar?

Hello,
First, thanks a lot for the work you made around XZ2 Compact, I come from french forum, and many tutorials quote you.
I wanted to know if there is still a problem to unlock bootloader of the Xperia XZ2 Compact (like losting DRM files and not being able to use camera anymore).
My current build is 52.0.A.11.3, and I would like to unlock bootloader from the developer sony website directly then root my device (I definitely can't imagine using Android without root haha)
So in this following message

you're saying that unlocking bootloader isn't a risk anymore, can you confirm it if I'm right, especially with my current build.
Best regards,

Oh thank you
Yeah, unlocking on the newest stock doesn't harm the camera. It changed since PIE. (Maybe change again with Q [to an even better result]).
So don't worry about your camera on unlocking.
If you use a SODP based custom rom the stock DRM is not used for the features. (But the camera there is work in progress and get heavy work over the next months).

Oh, that's a really great new !!!
I think I'll stay with the stock rom, I just want to unlock the bootloader, flashing TWRP, then install root (for using Titanium Backup + AdAway + Xposed Framework for XprivacyLua).
Can you just confirm that my wish are possible with the procedure I wrote please ?

I don't use this stuff except Titanium backup, but if it works for PIE, why not?

Well, the most important is how to root my device, the use of root I'll do isn't important tho.
But I guess as you didn't say anything about the procedure, I can go for it then

Custom rom support

Hey all,
Early days of course, but just wondering if any devs wanna post if they're intending on getting this device to bring some custom rom magic?
I'm on it <3 Just published my Treble GSI flashing Guide over here too

Ohh exciting! Thanks for getting getting in touch.
Just curious what your style of custom rom will be? Modified stock, pixel experience, Resurrection Remix style etc?
(UPDATE - just seen your GSI thread now - great work!)
Also you may not know this, but do you have an opinion on bootloader unlocking and camera features being lost? Apparently on older devices it was possible to backup the TA partition etc to avoid this, though indeed this may be unknown territory until we actually get the device (hopefully Thurs 18th June for me!)

Glad You found it. There is more to come...
About the bootloader unlocks. No worries! Sony isnt using the old Camera tech anymore. Means your Pictures and Videos will be Just fine after unlocking. You can dump Your TA with NewFlasher from XDA which is also recommended for flashing new Xperias with Treble. The only Thing You will loose is the Creator Mode somehow (Don't know how it works on the Mark 2 but i haven't Seen or missed it in my Xperia 5 yet...). It are good Times for Xperia and custom ROM Fans. Hope we will get a great Community again after so many years with ugly DRM fixing and lost functionalities...
Hope You will enjoy Your Xperia :fingers-crossed:

PS: Check Out My Xperia 1 & 5 Threads. MARS_SOM will also Support the new Mark 2 once i have a Tester...

Ah this is fantastic news!
Ideally I'd love to root stock on day 1 of getting the device. Am I right in thinking that I should do the following:
1) Backup TA (what's the best way to do this?)
2) Unlock bootloader (via official Sony website)
3) extract boot img (via fastboot or download the latest stock rom? I'm new to xperia so unsure how it all goes for these devices!)
4) patch boot img with magisk
5) flash rooted boot img
Your help is greatly appreciated!
I for one will be active in the community and I suspect it'll grow rather popular!
Will check out the MARS_SOM....

1) Download NewFlasher from XDA. It will ask You as first or second step to backup TA (Trim Area). Use the included Drivers if needed and awnser all other Prompts with y for yes to flash full firmwares. Do this before unlocking as first step... NewFlasher is for newer Devices so please don't use the old flashing tools...
2) Correct. It will also give You the needed fastboot base for the following steps
3) Download XperiFirm and UnSin from XDA (Same Guy called Igor Eisberg or so). He's a VIP for us...
Download the Correct Firmware for Your Device and extract the boot Sin File with UnSin by drag and drop on the UnSin.exe.
4)You will get an boot Img File which can be rooted with the Magisk Manager before You flash it. Keep Recovery, AVB and Encryption Option Boxes marked under advanced options for the patching...
5) Flash the Patched Boot Image with fastboot like "fastboot flash boot_a boot.img" and "fastboot flash boot_b boot.img" to flash Root to both A/B Slots (Since it's a Treble A/B Device with 2 Slots).
That will be it. After that can You install the MARS_SOM if You want to. I'm releasing BETA2 today and hope it works on the Mark 2 too

Great!
Regarding the TA backup, at what point would I restore that backup? As I really would wish to avoid such loss of any functionality (especially on day 1 haha) and so ideally I think I'll only go for this if/when it can be confirmed that unlocking the bootloader/restoring the TA backup has zero negative effects.
It'll be my intention, best case scenario, to root stock firmware (for theme, ad blocking etc), enjoy it for a short while to get a feel for the device, then play around with custom roms (plus gcam etc) ?
I'll be very keen to try out MARS_SOM, looks like you keep it all stock but with loads of extra tweaks for performance etc sounds great!
I already pre-ordered and can be a tester.. pre ordered the US version from Best buy.

When is your estimated delivery date, July?
I'm UK O2 and hopefully it's arriving this coming Thursday 18th
Unsure if I'm brave enough to unlock straight away for the risk of losing some camera functionality/features, so I may wait to see if someone less concerned tries first..... Lol

After some more Research does it looks like that SONY isn't using DRMs for the Cameras anymore at all, after many claims from Customers over the last Years. The only DRM stuff thats left was for Netflix and the Xperia Services. I haven't seen any Claims or Problems besides that... But let's see If the Xperia 1 II suprises us

Out of curiosity at you please able to link me to this research? I'll give it a read.
Hopefully it'll be here this Thursday and so I'll enjoy stock for some time and then take the plunge to unlock!

Haven't all links here, but My Xperia 5 proofs and this may also be interesting:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-1/help/xperia-1-drm-keys-locking-bootloader-t4079715
There will be no difference once You locked the BL and after flashing Stock again. Your unlock Key will be unique so You May want to keep it on a Safe place in Case You want to unlock again. But Like said, everything works fine over here except for Xperia Services where You can't Login after unlocking...

That's wicked, I would love that!!
Does anyone know if ROMs are vastly different for XQ-AT51 (global single sim version) and XQ-AT52 (global dual sim version)? I preordered while it was not know that it is gonna be a single sim only in EU, so I returned the bundle and am gonna order the dual sim from Wondamobile. Guess flashing custom ROMs made for AT51 won't do the trick?

Hi Miustone,
Maybe you know what I'm doing wrong. Every time I try to run newflasher.exe I get the error
Code:
No usb device with vid:0x0fce pid:0xb00b !
USB debugging is enabled.
OEM Unlocking is NOT toggled.
USB is set to File Transfer mode.
I cannot change the controlled by setting from "This device" to "Connected device."
I am using the USB C to USB C cable that came with the phone.
I tried every configuration possible with this cable (even though it shouldn't matter).
ADB is recognizing the phone.
I tried running it as admin.
I tried with the drivers that come with the phone.
I tried with the gordonGate drivers.
I tried with the manual drivers from Sony.
Any help will be greatly appreciate!
Thanks
