Greetings,
I have a Desire Eye running 5.0.1. I am not a hardcore phone hacker, I don't know all the tools and processees required to update these things. It's my understanding that the unlocked version, which I have, isn't going to receive any ROM updates over the air. This is unfortunate, because there are many things currently affecting the device that I would like to see fixed... 1. Google Maps causes a blinking black cursor in center of screen, fix is to update to 6+. 2. Limited onboard space is taken up by useless factory apps. Etc.
I'd like to update my phone to a better version of Android, but I'm worried that all the roms and guides I see might brick my phone or cause devices or certain features to not work correctly. There's very little newbie guides to this, which is what I'd look for.
Can anyone help guide me into selecting a ROM that would be best for my uses (sleek, lightweight, still lets me do everything), and how to install it?
Thanks
Suggest you look at the step by step guide on this forum. https://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-eye/general/step-step-guide-to-installing-android-7-t3662947

Hi all,
I've finally got a Desire heading my way from Orange. I'll be wanting to purge the Orange branding for a variety of reasons, but I'm unsure of the most up to date, clean/stock ROM to go for.
I'm new to the Android platform, so rather than try out a custom/tweaked rom that requires rooting, I thought I'd just use the goldcard method to flash a clean rom across (May try rooting/customs later).
I've been reading through some of the threads and have a fair idea of what to expect, my questions to you fine people:
What is the most up to date 'stock' htc rom going? - I was going to try the one listed in the T-mobile thread, or 'RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3'.
Presumably I'll still receive over the air updates for such a stock rom?
If/When I root, does all the phone data require backing up? How many of your settings persist?
Thanks for any replies.
Generic ROM and MD5SUM:

I think it is always better to start at the lowest version possible and then let the phone update by itself. This will help to ensure all original updates directly from the factory.
Cheers, I think that's the one I've gotten hold of.
question from a new guy
where can i download this rom from? as i'd like to install this stock rom on my desire too i've looked on the forum but can't seem to spot it anywhere.
thanks for any help in advance

Doesn't that mean it uses up more memory?
as you'll have the old files overlaid by the newer ones
I might be wrong but if a factory reset returns it to a pre-updated state then it's
not using the same area that the rom flash does
personally I'm holding off till Froyo is available before I buy a Desire

JayceAndTheNews - Let me know how you get on would you? any chance of hooking me up with what ever methods you've used? I've got an orange branded Desire on T-mobile and want rid of all the Orange bollox but don't feel the need to root yet.
JAmes.
understanding (although possibly incorrect) is that I'm overwriting the current Orangey rom with a cleaner one. So although the factory reset may remain somewhere, the actual os I'm running will be a similar size if not smaller than what I've got atm.
Sounds like I've got some more reading to do =D
jamfitz86 - I'll let you know what I end up doing and if it works, just got my shiny black desire yesterday, I intend to clean out the Orange garb on a weekend.
Cheers all.
Update for jamfitz86 / anyone else who may find it useful (although most of this is repeated in other threads).
Effectively followed this guide "http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/" to the letter. Encountered no problems/difficulties whatsoever.
Formatted the goldcard afterwards to use as my SD card until I get a larger one on the go.
Phone up and running, installed back missing apps etc. Performance seems about the same, potentially a little better certainly no worse. Removing all the
Orange crap makes things much more enjoyable overall, I'd definitely do it again given the choice.
I'm happy with the stock ROM that my unbranded Desire came with, but I'm thinking about rooting it to add some extra functionality - specifically two-way call recording and Titanium Backup right now.
Is it possible to root the phone without changing ROMs and/or losing all of my currently installed apps, settings etc etc?
If it is, what happens when ROM updates appear? Can I install the OTA updates or would I need to wait for someone to mod it to keep root enabled?
Finally, the same question but regarding 2.2. What happens when the official 2.2 update comes out? I'm guessing nobody knows for certain, but are we likely to be waiting a while before we can update if our phones are rooted?
I'd have thought this sort of thing would be covered in a rooting FAQ but I can't seem to find anything about it!
Much thanks for any advice.
I'm also very interested in the response to this, as a new Desire user I don't think that the rooting/rom upgrade guide is particularly helpful, it dives far too deeply into the topic before actually talking about the process, what it involves from a complete Desire newbie perspective.
In a word - no.
In a few more words, part of the rooting process has to replace your existing ROM.
Regards,
Dave
I love the phone and its has been keeping me sane here at work.
However i hate the fact i cant use HULU, or Netflix. Not to mention the lag i have been getting with the phone.
I love this site and all the different themes and roms available.
All my friends are telling me to ROOT THIS PHONE! if i want to really experience the power of the phone.
I have read many of the rooting tutorials however i dont see any tutorial for hardware version 003.
Can anyone direct me to the correct thread?
The hardware version doesn't really mean anything when it comes to gaining root user access to your device.
The main factor in determining which root method to use is your hboot version. You can find the information on how to get this, and links to preferred root methods...
HERE!
AWSOME! THANK YOU! i have been reading all the posts here and reading up all the different methods.
That Hardware version was the only think stopping me
I would like to go to the Android 2.3 after i root it.
Can i skip going to Android 2.2 Fyroro? (is that how you spell it?)
Anyone have an answer for me ?
Also did anyone start getting bluetooth issues after the PRL update?
I dont think its related, but i got a new car and it will not connect to the bluetooth of my car.
Well it does but it will disconnect constantly, before it would connect fine and i would be able to stream form it.
I sure miss that, now i cant even use the bluetooth to make calls on it because it looses its connection and i have to re-establish the connection constantly.
Do bluetooth go bad on the evo?
Yes you can go to 2.3(Gingerbread) Android, but it is still in development for the Evo and is not stable and does not support HDMI and 4G at this time. It is in the works and 4G may be available in the next Cyanogen release which will be 2.3.1 Android version. If you want a Rom that everything works on you will have to flash a custom Sense based Rom which is a customized version of the stock Rom that came on your phone which are all 2.2(Froyo). Some are stripped of most HTC and Sprint apps and some are pretty close to stock with root. I would suggest reading the first post in all the Rom threads over in the Evo Development section to find out what is and what isn't working in each Rom. Read and learn about what all the terms mean like AOSP, Sense, Kernels and pretty much anything else you don't understand when reading about the Roms. It is best to get as much knowledge as possible before rooting and flashing because there are some serious risks. I don't mean to scare you because I highly encourage you to root, but I also encourage you to read and learn as much as possible before doing it. That way if you run into trouble and need help you can give a better description and it will be less likely that you will need help because everything you need to know is here on XDA.
I am a normal user, not a developer. Had my desire for about a year now, its quite decent, I think I am gonna keep it when my contract runs out. Althought sometimes it freezes and forces apps to close.
It is very standard, android 2.2 with basic apss, sat nave being the most usefull app.
How do I get more out of this phone?
What will exactly rooting do? If I was to successfully root it (with your help obviously, i hope you have some good tutorials on here), is it likely that it will crash and brick later on?
No way of bricking it if you follow all the steps, even if you screw up something it's really hard to brick it completly...
Root is giving you multiple advantages, its all on the forums tho just have a read!

Rooting is a relatively risk-free procedure. Having root access means you'll be able to flash custom roms and modify/remove/add system apps, plus you'll be able to overclock or underclock for battery saving purposes. Other than this you'll be able to remove ads from free apps, plus much more things i can't recall.
Rooting is the first thing to do, then, if you want top performances you should really try out a custom rom, maybe an aosp one (aosp are the fastest, hands down). I'd recommend you to use Oxygen 2.1.4, bug free, insane battery life, really fast and even more stable than stock. Imho the best you can do is using Oxygen with its custom partition table and no ext partition: so you can keep all of the sd storage for your music, photos, videos or whatever you want, and you'll still have room for 80+ apps on the phone, and having all of the rom on nand makes it even faster. In order to do this you have to follow the s-off procedure and then flash the oxygen hboot, there is plenty of tutorials for all of this, just use the search function.
Actually if you wanna jump in and enjoy the epicness of Desire roms (we got some of the best devs ever playing with this device) you really should setup your android debug bridge (adb) on your pc: it's a program packed with drivers that will help you controlling your device for debug purposes and is essential for flashing radios, recoveries, partition tables, pushing apps to the system partition and much more things really handy. There are many tutorials also about that, it takes some minute to setup correctly but it's essential if you wanna play with android for real.
I hope i pretty much covered the matter, feel free to ask whatever you want.
Thanks, that helps.
I will attempt to root it over next weekend.

Nice tutorial:

I've been going down the rabbit hole all day on this site looking for info, but have yet to find any help on my specific situation, so I'm deciding to post. All I want to do is root my phone, and then put a new Android version on it (4.0+).
The more guides I find, the more I realize how hard they are to follow. :/ They all look like they assume the user knows exactly what's being done and can fill in the blanks. They aren't very in-depth at all. I'm unable to do that, because I'm extremely new to this. I only have this one phone, and if I botch this, I'm out. Completely. It also appears that I have some factors working against me.
For starters, my firmware is too new (5.07.651.6 710RD). I'm also running 2.3.5. And... I use a Mac. A lot of these guides only have steps for if you're using Windows (lots of .exe files and Windows only programs). As of now, I already have all of my phone's info (HBOOT, hardware/software version, PRI, etc).
All I'm after is a solid root method for my phone that Mac users can do, as well as a guide for getting a 4.0+ ROM on the phone that Mac users can also do.
