Hello OnePlus XDA community, Henry here. I recently (today lol) sold my OnePlus 5 for a decent $420 in lieu of getting the OnePlus 5T. I bought the OnePlus 5 on release day (June 27th, 2017) and it has been my daily driver since. Now that it is sold, I am resulting back to my backup iPhone 6 Plus (a very slow phone might I add, but it is still quite the looker) I can get the OnePlus 5T for $503 with the student discount knocking off $50 from the 8GB/128GB model.
This post is to basically ask you guys opinions on upgrading from the 5 to the 5T, whether or not my choice and method of selling to get the next phone was a good idea, and any other discussions you would like to bring to the thread!
I have the 5 and just received my 5T today. I'm probably going to sell my 5 to offset some of the cost.
I'm loving the 5T, IMO the screen alone is worth the upgrade.
Well, I will "only" sell my 3T for my 5T, but since the 5 has exactly the same dimensions and display as the 5, I would say, yes, it might be worth it.
I bought the 5T mostly because of bezel-less design. And I love it. So if the bezel is an issue for you, an upgrade to 5T makes sense. Especially seeing how little OP paid for it. 80 bucks for better display and body-to-screen-ratio? Hell yeah.
Since you were able to get such a decent amount of money for the 5... You made a fine choice.

better camera than oneplus 5t

I think this is a price thing, if you don't care about the money you can choose the "little" better huawei...
but if you are not keen on amoled screens, I think the mate 10 without pro is the better choice.
Buy the 5T not because someone on XDA in the 5T forum says so but because Huawei is a really crappy company! Huawei already abandoned the Honor 8 that came out last year with great specs, they said in can't handle Oreo which is a blatant lie! They would rather sell you a new phone which I'm sure a lot would rather do but geez have some class!

While I don't disagree, your reasoning isn't exactly fair. Honor is a budget brand and similarly priced devices released around the same time also do not have Oreo
Not that the Honor 8 didn't get Oreo yet, it's NOT getting it! Huawei said the Honor 8 can't handle Oreo basically which is a lie. The Honor 8 has better specs than several phones running 8.0, and its not a budget handset by any measure.
I was in the same dilemma
the camera I'd say is better on the OnePlus 5t simply because it is smarter what I mean that there isn't auto hdr on the mate yes the hardware is better and more reliable on the mate but I just hate EMIUI
the selfie on the mate is a complete garbage on of the worst the oneplus's selfie is better
the software experience on the oneplus is far better which is the most important thing to me
the EMIUI is like 2 years old with the same crappiness which I can't live with
the htc 10 which was launched in 2016 along with 3/3t and galaxy s7 all are tipped to get oreo update unlike huawei
also the development community in the huawei is very weak so you can't even depend on that after official support ends
camera on the mate 10 isnt great. more oil paintings, bit like the 5T.
battery will be better though, updates about the sames as 5t and if you're in the uk can can get the mate 10 pro from carphone warehouse for £529 at the mo!
I like the specs of Huawei / Honor phones, but hate their EMIUI. Had one phone with it and it was just so horrible ugly and bloated.
Almost pure Android is much better.
Well... If you are willing to pay $800+ I'd suggest you to wait for Samsung S9. Huawei appeared out of nowhere and started selling phones for the high price just because specs are good on a paper. I personally have OnePlus 5T 8gig variant and I am satisfied with what I got for under $600. I can't say if camera is better or worse than Huawei mate 10 Pro but 5T does the job for me and higher mpx dont always mean better camera. Buy 5T and I am sure you wont regret but it is always your personal choice. We can tell you anything here.

ive had both
cant go wrong with either both are good
if you are keen on development then get the oneplus 5T as the mate 10 pro is a pain in the royal behind to download and flash things
I've had most Android devices. I go through them like water. The mate 10 pro was great hardware, but software made it unbearable for me. I've been using my red OP 5t for a few weeks now. I really love it especially with the Oreo update and gestures. I'm gonna stick with it as my DD until the S9+
After reading this thread im going to have nightmares about update.apps and software install failed. I will never spend another penny on a Huawei product....most finicky devices known to man.
Oh yea, get the 5T :good:
Bros, what you guys thinking of buying 7T now? My main criteria is custom ROM development support but only OmniRom and AOSiP (alpha) is there now. Since four models are released in a very short period this year and the 7 Pro is the one with so many custom ROMs like about 15+. None of the other have even more than 3 (OP 7). I want to buy the new one very soon because my current device has fallen from a very height and many parts need to be replaced.
I'm surprised at the lack of development myself, but I assume it's because of how new Android 10 is and the whole issue with TWRP. Might be the same on other Android 10 devices. With that said, I'm pretty happy with rooted OxygenOS atm -- even if other ROMs were available, I'm not totally sure I'd switch over.
The price for a new 7T and pre-owned 7 Pro is the same here. The size and weight of 7 Pro is a bit larger that's why I'm thinking of 7T but lack of custom ROMs is pulling me away. My current Z2 has large development support that's why I can't think of anything without custom ROM support. Another option is to buy a new K20 Pro for a lower price. Or a pre-owned 6T (same price as the new K20 Pro).
Bros, decided to buy a pre-owned 7T 8GB 128GB for $400. Found out that it has almost everything I like and doesn't have something I hate. I hope the development support will pick up anytime soon ?
Just got my 7T!!! And it's an amazing device.. ??
Yeah, I just bought a used 7t. Really thought I would go for the 7 Pro, but having looked into it, I'm not sure why anyone would. The 7t has all of the best bits of the 7 Pro [emoji106][emoji3]

Yes bro, 7T has almost everything which I wanted and lacks only a very few things. Like it has a
+ non-popup camera so faster fact unlocking
+ 90Hz of course
+ stereo speakers
+ 3 cameras with a wider one and now with a super-macro mode
+ OIS
+ less weight compared to 7 Pro
+ 855+
and pretty much everything a flagship needs. The only thing I miss is the QHD display. I have a VR/AR device so I wanted to use it for watching movies like in a theatre. The QHD display has less pixelated view compared to fHD for this use. But compared to other specs it is not a deal.
Hi since its black Friday I'm considering buying a new oneplus phone eider an 9 or 9 pro, price does not really maters, but I don't like curved glass hence not sure about if the pro will suite me.
I would want to use it 5-7 years so a good community support is important to me.
I have seen that the op 9 seams not to be that popular not even a lineage os build for it.
What do you think?
How bad is the curved glass on the pro?
Am i right in the assumption that the pro has better long therm perspectives and support expectations?
Many people complains on op 9 pro, but I personally like it. Curved screen is comfortable to use, battery is ok after last updates and applying custom kernel. It's not the best phone one the market, but definitely worth considering.
It's not that OP that it was at the beginning. General feeling of the phone made by community is kind of lost. I remember when I bought 2 OP3 for me and my brother several years ago and I loved the community on their forum. Now I get a feeling community has not much to say about the development plans.
But still it is fine phone.
I am also surprised your OP3 lasted that long In both phones I bought I had speaker issues (I almost did not hear person I was talking to). Had to get them fixed.
My op 3 works well the only issue is that its on a replacement battery and the new I got was a dud so I worry that there are no more good OP3 batteries on the market.
Plus its really time for an upgrade but as said idk if 9 or 9 pro.
It seams to me the normal 9 is by far not as popular as the pro so for a long use the pro may be better, but than there is this anoying curved screen
9 Pro is the one.
Curved screen is not as big like in 8 pro. Of course i don't like curved screen too !
9, i don't know is it have xPan mode in camera from Hasselblad. I think this is a must.
People complain about Pixel 6 Pro, the same...
Like you say, money is no issue... 9 Pro.
Or you can wait few months for 10 Pro.
You have already shown the level of perseverance sticking with the Three... I suggest waiting for 10 Pro not that it won't have a curved screen, but the overall composition and cameras would be much better than any other previously launched OnePlus device.
Do remember that the 9 has a painted plastic frame while the 9 pro has an aluminium frame, since you're planning to use it for a long time.
I too was on the OP3 for 5 years until the screen became unstuck at one edge and then one day the phone suddenly died.
I think I'll go for the 9 pro now, waiting for the 10 is liek waiting for the 11 and so on there is always something better around the corner, and I'm not a great photographer anyways, lol
I came from my OnePlus 3t to the 9pro. I've never looked back
The 9 pro is nice but rumors are the 10 is the refined version, I love my 9 pro but the 10 is shaping to be the next 7 pro.
The 9 Pro now for the win! cheers
Like others said wait for the 10 pro, but don't buy it right away. It could be it has some bugs at first. Wait for the creation of a forum for the device and read a little on the pro and cons then decide.
I wish i did that on the 9 pro.

I hated curved display mainly because 99.9% of screen protectors are absolute ****. Finally found one that I love and is durable, not I have no complaints. I enjoy the snappiness and overall great performance of the pro
My OP 6 is slow as hell because of the bad (update) support from OP with updates and the screen just cracked so I am looking to buy a new phone. With the upcoming OP10 and the review from jerryrigseverything I will not spend my money on that thing because my phone will lay everywhere and will be in every pocket. Although the bad reputation OP is getting themselves in {Mod edit} I am not ready to leave the brand yet (Samsungs get slow as hell as well after a few years and other brands ask way above 1k as well for a phone). Thinking about getting the 9 Pro after the 10 is out to get it for cheap but I noticed that de Nord 2 CE is out as well. Is this a better phone (or close to the 9 Pro) in terms of performance and all or not?
Would it be better to get the Nord 2 CE instead of the 9 Pro?
Totally different goals for each device. OP9 Pro has a flagship SoC and Nord CE 2 is focused on average users. The hardware doesn't replicate the same premium features (the body is covered with plastic, the screen isn't so bright and the refresh rating reaches up to 90Hz).
Look at the 9RT else the Iqoo 9 / 9 Pro. The new Mi series is also good. Nord 3 might release soon. My OP6 was working fine but needed a new phone so sold that and got the 9RT. It's good enough.
If the price is close 9 Pro. Just better.
10 Pro Global is still young in OxygenOS, still got some bug's...
Looking at upgrading and was wondering if it's worth buying a oneplus 9 Pro what is battery life like how long it last

I left Samsung for OnPlus because of Samsung's unlockable bootloader. Was with Samsung for 12 years, just this year switched to OnePlus for more custom options. However, customize with caution. Do your research first before making a move. Won't go wrong with OnePlus.

A pre-owned 12GB, 256GB without any warranty for $490

It is still worth buying. With A11 or A13 (not A12), it is equal to anything in the market now. I would go for either the first or the last one in your list, depending on the budget.

OnePlus had them on site for $399 brand new but sold out. Maybe they will have more. Ebay and amazon had some stock at $349 last week, also brand new.
$662 seems pretty high. I bought mine before they went on sale. It was $469 (Tmo) brand new on eBay. You can probably find a better deal than $500 pre-owned, depending on region
Amazon Germany had a 20% off warehouse deal on Cyber Monday which came out to €464 for a used one in very good condition (12gb/256gb variant). I would not pay more than that.
The OnePlus 9 Pro is still definitely a good buy, even if you stick with OxygenOS 11 or 13 (skip 12, as @TNSMANI said). It's definitely a good buy if you want to eventually dabble in the world of custom ROMs, as the 9 Pro has excellent support in that area compared to the OnePlus 10 series, which has almost none (last time I checked, anyway).

But here, in India the prices are like I mentioned before. My other options are a used 7T for $200-250. Then OnePlus 9R, Poco F4 (unsure about the cam quality compared to 7T) or Pixel 7 series (too expensive, literally can't think of now :/ )

I see but I couldn't find any good deals during these Black Friday days and cyber Monday. I too don't want to spend this amount for a pre-owned or box pack of 9 Pro.

Yes, have the same thoughts. I had the best phone I ever had, OnePlus 7T, till a month back, it's main board died then. So my new phone should be equal or better than 7T by specs, with nearly zero bloatwares, root friendly that doesn't tamper the warranty (only if I'm buying one with warranty), can install modded apps incl. GCam, have custom ROM support (now or whenever it won't get newer official ROMs; found many custom ROMs for 9 Pro), and also able to factory reset the ROM manually (10 series still don't have MSM Download Tool support if I'm correct).
Other options matching these criteria are Poco F4 (unsure about the cam quality when compared to 7T), and Pixel 7 series, but they are too expensive.
In that case, if you can spare the cash, buy
"A pre-owned 12GB, 256GB without any warranty for $490"
Because 12GB Ram could mean better longevity/viability.
I've just got myself one. There are good deals to be had on open box items from Amazon Warehouse Events (10% off earlier, 20% off now). Also went for the 12/256 version but because of the storage not the RAM: I think 12 GB on a phone is ridiculous (not that I mind having it though).
The hardware is excellent. The phone is a bit bulky but all of its size is put to good use as it has an amazing and nearly bezel-less screen. It feels premium to the touch and is still reasonably slim. The only drawback is that (in common w/other SD888 devices), battery life (specifically screen-on time) isn't great. But at least it's fast to recharge (from 0% to 100% in 30').
I bought it for use with LOS as it's a well-supported device. It lives up to my expectations. The custom ROM scene is lively. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to people who just want to run stock OS though. I haven't used stock much myself before flashing LOS and I'm probably biased anyway but the impression is that a lot of the userbase is unhappy about how the things are going, and the general quality of the updates.
It'd be hard to recommend getting into the mess that Color/OxygenOS seems to be now when you could simply get a Pixel 6a, also with a decent camera, better battery life, and next to no software issues whatsoever, for nearly half the price. This is what I got for a relative who just wants things to work, with updates.
Still, the OP9 Pro is a great device to tinker with, if that's what you enjoy. And if you're here on XDA then you probably do.
