Scratched or Broken screen yet? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I usually like to apply a glass screen protector, however, the choices currently seem to be problematic or just too expensive.
I was wondering who here has actually (God Forbid) scratched or broken their Pixel 2 XL screen?
Maybe a short description and cause would be of interest.
Please no screen protector recommendations, theirs already a thread for that.

I will say that while building my shed the other day, I put my phone about 7 feet in the air on a ledge in the shed. While hammering on the other side of the shed, the phone fell from 7 feet and not a scratch or dent on it. I did have a Spigen thin fit case on it but I was still expecting it to have scratches from falling on the cement.

LOL... I hate it when one tries to be safe and it turns into a disaster.
Yes, a case is a must especially for the money spent on this device.

After it fell, I thought why the heck did I put my phone up there. Of course that thought didn't come to me until after it fell.

I have a big scratch

My Pixel 2XL came on October 19th and I fired it up right away (of course).
My phone screens are usually scratch free for at least 6 months, but in the past I usually bought cheaper phones (I came from the $400 Moto X Pure) and was pretty rough with them. Drops all the time, putting in my pocket with other stuff, throwing it in my backpack with my keys.. etc.
However since this phone was so expensive (128GB XL2) I have BABIED it. It hasn't been dropped, I haven't put it in my backpack once, if I put it in my pocket I make sure nothing else is in the pocket.
BUT somehow I have a small scuff above the bottom speaker and a HUGE curved scratch (probably 3.5 inches) curving from the right edge around the bottom of the volume rocker all the way to above the back button at the bottom of the screen. It's been there almost 2 weeks now. I have absolutely no idea how it happened, as I was being extremely cautious.
It hasn't affected the usability of the phone, but it makes me sad to see my pretty, expensive, new phone sitting there with such an ugly scratch. :crying:

I've always used a case because of those mystery scratches. Also, I'm always thinking of resale value so when I put it up on Swappa I recoup some of the cost.
I realize some folks like to fly naked but this geezer doesn't want to scare off the wildlife.

I just received my Pixel 2 XL last saturday with the Google Fabric case. It has not been dropped. It only goes to my jeans pocket. On my second day with it I have noticed a huge scratch on my screen on the right side almost from top to bottom. ? It's not deep, but its there and noticeable when the screen is off. I had the regular Pixel 2 for about two weeks and the screen is mint. I thinks glass quality is different between these. I'll have to live with it ?.

I don't care how resilient these screens are. After the diamond on my wife's engagement band put a very nasty scratch into the screen of my Galaxy S8, I will always use a screen protector from here on out.
My 2 XL has had a full coverage tempered glass protector installed immediately after pulling the phone from the box. I will be taking no chances this time around.

I ordered my 2 XL 128 black and white on Nov 10, got it delivered Nov 11. Half way through the day we had some visitors. I set the new phone on top of my Surface Pro laptop which was on top of the kitchen counter. Surface Pro laptops have that weird hinge that makes the lid close at a very slight slope - not horizontal.

So, about 15 min after I left my phone on top of the Surface Pro, I hear loud "splat"! The phone slid off of the laptop and fell on the tile floor face down, cracking the screen from bottom left corner. Apparently, I placed the phone screen down and the glass is so smooth, it just slipped off of the laptop. There were no incoming phone calls, messages, or other vibration - the phone was not even activated yet.
Smooth criminal!
I got the claim started with Asurion the next day but since Pixel 2 is so new, they did not have any refurbished phones and sent me a brand new one.
I never use screen protectors or cases and, over time, obviously, phones and screens acquire some ... wear and tear scars. I'm Ok with that. But this Pixel 2 XL is something else - only one day after I got the replacement, there is huge deep scratch on the screen. The scratch happened over a weekend - I was in my pj all day, my place doesn't have sand or sand paper, I wasnt tossing the phone around. I really was "babying" this phone. I just dont know how this scratch could've happened. Not impressed with this Grilla 5, not at all.

Just had a situation occur that is having me seriously question our build quality...

I was sitting at my desk at work, and I went to get up and go to lunch. I didn't realize my phone was on my lap, but when I got up my phone fell out of my lap, and on to the carpet. The back came off and the battery came out ("big deal", I thought, since every other time I dropped a phone [not often], the battery came out). I get the battery, get the back, and go to grab the phone, when I realized that the front is basically shattered.
The phone didn't fall more than 3 feet onto carpeted floor, and I was just in awe at that. I still am. Fortunately, Sprint is going to replace it because I have insurance, and apparently there is no deductible which is nice. My EVO hasn't given me any problems though and I see about others who seem to and I hope that the refurb unit lasts longer than this one did. I might also be investing in an Otterbox or something.
Here's a pic of the carnage:

I dropped my phone onto the street when I was getting out of my car. It was from about 3-4' high. I bobbled it as a stood up and watched it crash face down to the ground in what appeared to be slow motion. Picked the phone up off the ground and it only had a few scratches on the corners. I thought for sure the screen would be cracked. I peeled off the screen protector when I got home, and not a single scratch on the screen. I don't use a case for the phone.
I guess my point to the story is that it could just be I was lucky, and you got unlucky. After my incident, I feel pretty confident in the HTC build quality.
Forgot to mention; sucks what happened to your phone. Good thing for insurance.

Thanks.
Yeah I dropped mine onto the wood floor at my house from a similar height as what happened today and nothing really happened, so that's why I was shocked. I dropped my Pre probably 4 or 5 times when I had it and nothing at all happened to it. The Pre was a tank for me, which is surprising since pretty much everyone else who had it complained bigtime about the build quality of it.
I'm debating on whether or not I should unroot my phone before I bring it back on Monday. The person at the store didn't even turn the screen on when I brought it in and approved it, but I didn't know if some flak would come of it running an (obviously not stock) rooted ROM when it got wherever it's going).
Or maybe they'll just toss it into the trash.
with the new what insurance is set up they should be able to fix your screen and hand it back to you IF its just the screen damaged
They'll actually just replace the screen for you at a repair center, instead ordering a refurb.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Could also be that the screen is or works like tempered/safety glass. You can take a ball peen hammer to the center of a sheet of safety glass with little to no affect. But take the same hammer and strike the edge of the glass and the sheet will crumble like the Yankees in a playoff game.
If your EVO landed on its side when it fell, that could be the cause. It's happened in my office many times with people's iPhones. I find that my Ghost Armor works well to diffuse the smaller bumps, though mine is covered in a rubberized case 80% of the time as well.
Hopefully you get a good replacement.

An Otterbox is a good idea ... it will help in the future.
I've said this from the beginning. All shatters start points occur from the bottom left or right of the phone!

Seriously question build quality? You're kidding, right? ANY glass will shatter when dropped, period. This has nothing to do with build quality. Would you prefer it to be plastic and have a million scratches on the screen?
Now if you were to complain about the screen separation issues, THAT would be a build quality issue. But NO phone is perfect.
I've dropped my phone dozens of times, many from 3 ft, others from 5 ft, I do have a black rubber case on it that only says htc on the back that I picked up on launch day. so far its never came apart or scratched or anything happened that would make it less than mint. I'm impressed with it and honestly don't see a way to destroy the thing unless I wanted to

Drop glass from 3 ft onto carpet, and see how often it breaks. I venture to guess it'll almost never break. I have never once broken a phone and now my EVO slides off my lap and it shatters. And I have no right to question the quality of it?
Don't get me wrong I love it and can't wait to get another so I can continue to play with it, but seriously.

The sample size is rather small but you're 1/1 so I'd venture a guess as to yes. Angle of impact seems to be the common denominator here, a flaw in the design there is not. $10 says you don't leave it on your lap and stand up to go to lunch again...but if you do report back here so we can hear about it again.
Its also possible your screen/glass might have had an imperfection in it as well . I have heard of glass windows in cars shattering with just the slightest of impacts . Granted they are rare , far and few between . Every once in a while the process of making the glass screws up causing weak points in its structure . Its possible this might be the case with yours . Glass was already weak from the manufacturing process and the small fall was enough to cause it to shatter .
I've dropped my phone from my lap getting out of my truck on asphalt. Thought for sure the screen was toast but just a few scuff marks around the plastic edge. second time it fell from waste height on concrete and that shattered the screen.
Otterbox offers good protection but I can't get over how HUGE the cases are. I ended up with Pt case. Just something to sheild the edges/corners a little better.
Thats why I'm calling bs the phone had to hit the desk or something you could slam the phone on carpet and not break the glass by the way if your at your desk why is the phone in your lap mobile porn or something

Anyone been using their S2 without a case for long time?

So I think the S2 looks great without a screen protector and case, but I am wondering if it is safe to use it this way for a long time. Would gorilla glass be enough to protect the phone from drops on the screen? Also, is the phone built tough? Like would it break if dropped without a case a few times? I haven't ever dropped my phone since I bought it in the summer but it would still be nice to know this.
Really depends on where you drop it from and etc. Some people has dropped it a few times without a problem, but others seem to have actually had a broken glass from dropping it on concrete from around knee to hip height. (you can check out some from the screen replacement thread)
Gorilla glass on isnt scratch proof, so it can get scratched, which is the main reason why I use a screen protector.
Just be smart about it.
If you're the type of person that expects to drop his phone regularly, you need a case.
This isn't a phone designed to be rugged and tough.
Again, just be smart about it. Know that not using a case is a risk. If you've worked out that the risk is small enough, then go for it.
Personally, I think a $20 case for protecting a $600 device seems to be a good deal. But that's just me.
my s2 is almost 1year old ! and i did never use scrn protector or case protector ! i tried a lot but i do not like them to make my s2 ugly and fat !
also my s2 didnt had extra treatment,he is always on my packed with money and keys and he do not have a singel scratch
Never used a case or a screen protector. This and the Galaxy S1 that i dropped multiple times on various surfaces... not a single scratch or dent....
I got a case on my one but decided not to put screen protector. Too bad I ended up with a tiny scratch on the screen after 6 months. It was always in my pocket. I suggest put a screen protector. case is cheaper to replace than screen.
Mine doesn't fit properly in the flip case I have when I use the 2000mAh battery (it pops out of the 'cradle' in the case), I once dropped it from around hip height (took it out of my pocket & phone popped out of case) face down onto a rough paved surface, apart from a couple of dings in the screen protector it's been fine since.
I replaced the screen protector last week & it did it's job well, the screen was exactly the same as it was when I bought the phone in October. So you'd be mad not to at least have a screen protector if you have any respect for a $500+ phone.
I am using the mine for around one year now, never used a screen protector or bumpercase. It fell alot... alot alot.. The metalic ring is missing some pieces or paint or at least the outer layer, but nothing major. No scratches on the glass for some reason, gorilla glass must be doing its job right.
I actually bought a bumper case in the beginning, but it made my phone to big, so I gave it to my old man. (who has a gs2 as well)
I don't mind minor damage to be honest, since I get a new phone every year and a half and I give my old ones to friends, so no resell value is needed.
Trust me the Galaxy S2 can withstand some damage, you'll be surprised. If you want to keep it perfect or use it for 3+ years, having a screen protector and bumper case might be worth it, but make sure the phone will still fit in your pocket.
I bought my S2 last may, since today I'm using without any case.
But yesterday I dropped my phone 10th time and this time the inside screen has been crashed.
My phone at service now and I should pay for it about 200 € now. Although I'm not planning to buy a case, S2 is really big phone and I dont' want it to get bigger with case.
I bought it in November. Used it with screen protector and case only 1 week after I bought it. From then until now I never used a case or screen protector anymore. It only has some minor scratches near the speaker on the back, otherwise, it looks very good.
Had mine since October. Never used anything extra... Screen still perfect... Dropped a few times on wood and once on tiles from a metre high. Everything is fine... But the chrome edge has started developing tiny cracks on my S2
bought mine last july. never used a screen protector nor a case.
looks shiny and quite new still.
Have mine since July last year. Never used a case or a screen protector. Fell on the floor like 2-3 times, nothing happened.
From what I hear from other people, a case might come handy if you're dropping your phone quite often. But then again, it's a pity to have a light and thin phone only to put a big and clunky case around it..
The screen protector, on the other side, is totally useless in my opinion. I've never seen scratches on other peoples sgs2's screens. The ones who have a screen protector have to deal with a totally ****ty haptic. Even the female users who simply throw their sgs2 into their bag never experienced scratches (from keys and the likes).
yeah its nice without a case, and that is how i broke my s2 screen TWICE in 9 months. And i was lucky enough to find some used faulty s2 screens on ebay for around £50-£60.
Mainly those screens may have faulty mic/speaker/vibrator, headphone jack/home button. but the screen is working completely fine. just replace those parts with ur working parts from the broken screen.
re
using mine from december and not a scratch or anything...
have been using mine without screen protector for 2 months
got 1 scratch which was due to my friend's mistake other than that it looks new
How is the wear of the back of the phone from just placing it on different surfaces? Are there any noticeable scuffs from points of contact?
It all depends on the user, if I am fairly confident that I will not be doing any heavy work for the day I leave the case at home. Mostly it stays in the SGP Neo Hybrid case. Have dropped it twice in seven months, once with the mesh case on(they mesh case cracked) and once with no case from hip height on tiles. Not a single scratch even on the screen. YaY. It is lasted well for me in this time period all my other gadgets had battlescars.
Using since last december, very slim and comfortable on my pocket..

Ive owned my gs2 for about 10 months, i have never used a case and still dont.
About 5 months ago i did accidentally drop it onto concrete the top corner took the full force of the hit and ended up screen down on concrete the only damage sustained was cosmetic on the corner bezel and plastic everything else including screen is still in perfect condition
This is a macro shot of the damage

2 days and screen scratched

Ordered it from Google on Tuesday and just started using it couple days ago. I baby my phone, never dropped it, always wiped with a clean cloth and I saw this when I looked at the screen under a lamp:

To me it seems like the oleophobic coating is responsible. It's probably really soft and prone to scratches. Whatever the case, Samsung has really let me down. How could the rigidity of such a large screen get looked past QA when it can be scratched this easily? Anyways, just thought potential buyers be forewarned.
Been using it since December 2011. No scratches.
Did you look under a bright light? I have 2 other friends who also reported hair line scratches.
Do you have a screen protector? Do you use a carrying case? What do you wipe your screen with?
And this is why I always put a screen protector on my phone.
Man really weird I've had mine since Jan, would put it in pocket with keys and what not till I got a holster and I don't have one scratch. I guess it's really a hit or miss with the screen. I don't like running a screen protector sorry to hear

Yes I've looked under a bright light.
No screen protector.
No carrying case.
I wipe my screen with a micro fiber cloth (I honestly don't need to wipe the phone much.. not a lot of fingerprints are on the phone due to the oleophobic.. it works great).
The only protection I use are cases (Case-Mate Tough Case [dont use this anymore], Otterbox Commuter [don't use it anymore], and now I use Ringke 4G LTE full time) with GSM Extended Battery.
No case no screen protector been using for 3 months now and not a flaw.
I have a ****load of scratches on mine. Owned it since January. I thought the screen would be comparable to gorilla glass, but I don't believe it is. One of my scratches is probably an inch long and perfectly vertical. Either way I I don't really care that much.
I'm been using my nexus for a bit over a month without a screen protector, and I don't have any scratches like that.

yah i never understood this obsession with scratches, they are so minor that you can see them unless you are really trying.
2 days? Absurd!
I can scratch a screen in 2 seconds. Just hand me your phone, I will bring the tungsten carbide plated drill bit.
BTW: Leather case, 4 months, no scratches.

My point was that it got scratched even when I cared so much for the phone. It seems to me like it got scratched from the lint in my pocket. I don't know about most people but that's alarming to me especially knowing I paid $400 for it.

You will find countless threads on this matter. Glass is relatively soft, even hardened glass. A lot of stuff can scratch it, the most common being simple dust particles (Quartz) which are readily available everywhere.
If you put your phone somewhere where it continually rubs against something -like your pocket- it will be scratched sooner or later. Basically as soon as a large enough Quartz particle makes its way into your pocket and on the screen.
So if you put a phone in your pocket without any protection, you didn't care enough for it. :-(
No case. No screen protector. Dropped once from a 6ft wall. Little ding in the corner.
Oh and I've had it since Dec. 15th.

No scratches since Canadian launch in December
Been using it for about 3 months now and I have a few light scratches near the top and bottom, and a few REALLY REALLY REALLY light ones on the screen, nothing that is actually visible without looking really hard. If you want 0 scratches get a screen protector because you're bound to get scratches. No phone out there has a totally scratch resistant screen.
They are all made of a glass/plastic hybrid so little particles floating around or getting on your screen will probably scratch it, especially if you wipe it everyday, might be something on the screen while you whip it :/.
But yeah don't blame Samsung for the screen scratching, they never said it can't be scratched and no company can guarantee that.
same here, two days one little scratch, always used with care
I've been tossing my phone in my pocket with keys, lighter, etc etc since November 18 and haven't had a scratch...
If there's sand of any amount in your pocket your gonna have a bad time.

I work outside in a dusty dry ass propane plant, I get all kinds of stuff on my hands and usually just wipe on my shirt and send a quick text and I use the underside of my shirt to wipe the screen while at work....

OUCH!!! (the phone fell)

It fell when I tried to put Galaxy Tab Plus into my field jacket. I noticed sound cut off suddenly and my Note 2 fell from 1.2 meters.
Even a TPU case and glass screen protector applied, a scuff formed on the left top (it's not visible when case applied). Fortunately, the screen didn't have any damage.
What if I have the phone unprotected?!

if you have insurance and if your digitier is damaged then replace a new phone or if only the glass lens is damaged then you can just buy stuff online and repair it yourself...this happened to me and ive had hard time replace glass lens it took me 2 hours with very slow movement and careful process. my heart almost stopped beating when putting on new glass lens cheers at least your phone is fine

Not really luck but the size, weight, and my Otterbox Defender case seems to be an undroppable setup! Honestly even when the phone has slipped its just impossible to drop. Last second fingertips on the corner edge of the phone, side hand pinning to body, etc, all have ended in no drops throughout the most unsuspecting moments... or maybe I am just lucky or "? reaction-arily? gifted"

I've managed to drop my phone with the Defender while putting it back in the holster, unbeknownst to me it tangled with my winter coat (granted, probably not much of a concern in Arizona) and some time later fell out on an elevator's tile floor. Loud thud, but nary a scratch.
It was the first time, and I've had mine since November.

Hi darkshado, I have an unlocked t889v from mobilicity, and phone could work under wind and virgin mobile.
However, signal is unstable indoors, asu frequently drops to 1 or 2, or even no service at all. I would like to activate lte to take full advantage of the virgin mobile's network. Could you please to forward me a draft guide on how to do it? I know the risk but still want a try....thanks~!
btw, the baseband is T889VVLALJ4, ROM is Jedi 9...
I dropped mine in the toilet (after cleaning the toilet) last week. Without hesitation I reached in and tossed it in the laundry hamper. I yanked the otterbox defender off and started drying it off. Pulled the back off and the battery out. Pulled the s pen out and shoved a qtip in the hole. Remarkably the phone was on and functioning befire I pulled the battery. After I gave everything a good wipe down I blew water from behind the home key, power button and volume rocker. There was also trace amounts in the s pen. Phone still works flawlessly. It didnt even hiccup. Makes one wonder how water resistant this phone is. It was in water for 3 seconds or less and nothing happened.
Noted Twice then replied using SGH-T889.
After careful inspection, a tiny damage found on the top-left of the screen. However, it can be covered with a case and the touchscreen isn't affected at all.

As odd as it sounds thank the screen protector. I had screen protector on my htc incredible and had it fall from the holster running and watched it endo beside me for a few steps with not screen damage. Only to remove it after switching carriers and getting a new phone to drop it from about 16 inched and crack the screen.
Im thinking about cutting the stock otterbox defender screen protector off and using one that adheres to the screen. This one doesnt sit flush so I get noise from it contacting the screen as I type and also dust and dirt enter from around the home key.
Note 2, yeah son!
I'm on my second note 2. Dropped the first one from about 1.5 feet without a case and goodbye screen. So moral of the story.... could have been much worse.

RhinoShield Crash Guard

Got my RhinoShield Crash Guard today. Fits nicely and sits up high enough on the back to protect the camera, the front seems to be high enough to keep a tempered glass screen protector off the table, we just need a good screen protector now. The case feels good in the hand, but being a little softer or some kind of tackiness would be nice. The only thing I'm not a fan of it the power button. The volume buttons are raised a bit, but the power button is almost flat. You can get the button to raise up a bit if you put the phone in the just tight. You can feel the indented area around the button to be able to feel it, but having it stick up the same as the volume buttons would be better. All the buttons react fine, just need the power button raised more.
Really? I just got mine and I hate it lol. Buttons are mushy and obliterated my skin when It on and gathers dust like no other. I'm so done with RhinoShield lol. Glad yours works great though! Hoping Dbrand Grip is better and if not, going back to Toast case
Yeah, not impressed. Fit is terrible. Buttons are crap. It's going back.
I don't find the buttons to be bad for me ...fit is tighter than my iPhone X mod bumper ..but I like the fit although we shall see once I try a skin... I do think they should've made it with better grip on sides maybe some ridges for grip...
Pixel 2 XL
I like it.
Mine fits fine and the buttons all stick out the same and are responsive for me.
I agree that the sides are a little slick but just maybe that will get a little better with time.
I'm going to use it for the next couple of weeks and see if I feel the urge to go back to one of my other cases.
When I got one for my 6P, I almost never used another case.
I just bought mine..... let's see what the experience is. The reason i bought it is because i just dropped my phone a couple of days ago and cracked a bit of the screen, should've bought this from the beginning.
I dropped my 6P a couple of times from around 5 feet onto concrete and my phone was none the worse.
The rhinoshield got a couple of scuffs but obviously that's a good tradeoff.
Hopefully this new one for the pixel 2 xl is as good.
And by the way, I did order from the beginning, but unfortunately the company wasn't ready to ship these until a few days ago.

Yeah, let's hope so!!! I've heard really good things about it.
Got mine on the way.
What screen protector are we all using?
I ordered the crash guard protector as well, not expecting big things
After using the case for a couple days I'm changing my mind on the power button. I actually like the way it presses. The volume buttons are moulded into the plastic and the power button, from the inside of the case, looks like it would be one of the buttons off their iPhone case that has different color buttons you can switch out. I'm now liking the feel of the button. If they made all of the buttons the same, like the power button, it would be better.
It went on without a hitch .. although it's a bit of a pain lining up with my bad eyes lol
I recommend using the blow dryer on any skin install

Just got mine and it's as good as I expected. Been a fan since the Guard on my 6P and this one didn't disappoint. The buttons feel just fine to me.
Have had mine for about a week now with a Dbrand skin. Just like with my 6P, I love the RhinoShield for the P2XL. It is a little smooth but that is something I'd imagine gets better with more use. The buttons are fine, every cable I have tried (I have a lot) work with the USB C port. It is a little too slick which is why I have the Drband grip on order through their campaign but I always planned on ordering both maybe even using both from time to time.
I'm guessing these won't be any good with a screen protector? I have the InvisShield on at the moment. Great protector.
Can someone share some photos of the front?

I’m thinking your screen protector doesn’t go to the edge ...I’m using the Intelliarmor one with no issues small gap on sides ...

Just to follow-up. I've had my rhinoshield bumper for a little over a week now and I definitely love it!!
It fits perfectly and buttons work fine for me.
Also, and really one of the most important reasons to get one of these, my 2xl fell out of my dress shirt pocket yesterday as I was picking something up outside of my front door onto the concrete. The fall was probably only about 3 feet as I was bending down to pick up a package but it was a pretty violent fall and hit the concrete pretty hard.
The result was the same as I'd had the couple of times my 6P fell onto concrete.
The corner of my bumper is a little scuffed (a little sad about that) but the phone is still pristine.
It's a really good option and should get more consideration. And you still get the feel (a little anyway) of a naked phone.
Bumper just feels better and better the more you use it... I only wish they would have different colors..

Should I install the precision or standard fit Dbrand skin if I will be using it with the RhinoShield Bumper?
My wife me to install the precision fit skin, but I'm thinking it will get damaged with the bumper, any thoughts?
