As I see, this is a very common question, and people don't seem to read your twrp FAQ as often as they should..
Either we should duplicate this specific question or linking to your thread from the general FAQ one ?

[Q] Updating Cyanogenmod recovery problem

Hi there,
Currently have cyanogenmod recovery 2.5.0.1 and want to upgrade to the latest (5.0.0.?)
Have tried doing this via ROM Manager, but it simply says it's installed and reports the latest version number, but when I restart in recovery it's still displaying the old version (and has none of the new features, i.e. - it hasn't updated at all)
I've read some guides on forcing ROM Manager to install newer or different .img's, but I can't even see any .img's it's downloaded. Are the downloads just failing?
Any help would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Does this look like Q&A section to you?

Nope it's not. This here is the link to the Q&A section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=689
As for your question, there are two ways of accessing recovery. One is via ROM manager and the other is from hboot menu.
ROM manager is a good software and still is. But for our Desire, it gives us problems or at least confusion like the one you are having right now. After you updated the recovery how do you access it? Do you access it via ROM manager or from the power menu (alternatively vol down+power)?
The recovery you access from the power menu or alternatively, via vol down+power, is independent from the one you access using ROM manager. That's probably where you are getting confused right now. If you downloaded the update from ROM manager, then you ought to launch recovery from ROM manager as well.
So in a nutshell you have two recoveries. You updated the one from ROM manager but you are probably launching the other that wasn't updated.
Thank you stankyou (haha!) for the response!
Even when I boot into recovery from ROM Manager I get to the old version of the recovery, 2.5.0.1. Very odd. Someone has suggested using fastboot to flash this? Does this sound like a plan?
Booting to recovery with the power button & volume down yields the same as rebooting into recovery from ROM manager or the restart menu (using Runnymede AIO)

Tell me, do you pretend to be idiot, or you were born as idiot?
I'd say idiocy was genetic, so actually I was born this way, 'fraid I can't help it.
Seriously though, it's time to grow up. It's a forum - by definition - it's a place where people discuss topics.
Yeah, so the odd post may end up in the wrong forum - but if we all act like little kids every time that happens, the place won't be very nice to frequent.
Cyanogenmod recovery? Not ClockWorkMod? - but hey, it was said a hundred times, how to replace the recovery (including update) - S-OFF needed - and yes you can use the fastboot to flash the newest one (even with Android Flasher).

Yes personally that's what I did for my phone. I ditched ROM Manager a long time and replaced Clockworkmod with 4EXT recovery by flashing. I was S-Off when I flashed a different recovery if that matters.

[Q] Installing Infamous Tab3 1.1 Error (Sig Verification Failed)

I downloaded Infamous Tab3 for my tablet, I put the rom package on my SD card, and tried to install it from recovery mode, and it said that the Signature Verification Failed.
I've also tried unzipping the archive contents onto my SD card, but there's nothing in there that the recovery mode can use.
Am I missing something here?

Download and install the custom recovery that you wish to use (from the CWM or TWRP thread in the the development section).
Follow the instructions posted in the recovery threads.
There is a root.zip posted there as well to give you root (but the custom rom probably is rooted already).

Hey guys, did it occur to you that the instructions you quoted are all for T210 ? It might not work on T211 and might even brick it. The OP and the me too would like an assurance that it will work on the t211. Also for the Infamous Tab3 the dev clearly said that I might lose the 3G if I flash it on my tab 3 T211.

Stop asking the same question in multiple threads or new threads. Its called cross-posting and is against forum rules. More importantly, it clutters up the forum; and makes it confusing for those trying to help you.
Case in point: I responded to one of your other posts. Go find it. See, isn't that confusing?

well, if you have no OS installed then you are no longer rooted, but that's pretty much irrelevant.
anyway, install a compatible ROM, using either:
1- the microsd card
2- adb push <name of rom>.zip /sdcard/
3- [start sideload in twrp] then adb sideload <name of rom>.zip
4- usb-otg

I had got the file from this thread. Its a NANDROID backup. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
I have tried multiple time but to no avail. I had sideloaded, pushed from adb and even got from ext sd to twrp . Nothing works

well if it's a nandroid backup, then it is not a flashable zip. you need to extract that backup (whichever one you are using), and place it in the twrp backup folder (probably /sdcard2/TWRP/BACKUPS/<your serial number>/<backup folder name>)
then use restore, not install
Ok will try thanks for the help will inform of what happens!
Oh and will I get the OS back too?

yes, that's generally what backups are for. good luck
or you could just download a rom from the development section and "install" that (as opposed to restoring)
or just read the whole nandroid backup opening post, second post and even the third post.... just like the thread title says in capital text ! its all there under the "questions&answers"

How would I flash boot.img in TWRP from my Backup I open it and theres nothing from TWRP.
And there no boot.img in the NANDROID either from my computer.
you are clearly reading the half of it !
a boot.img or emmc.boot.win file is flashed by fastboot and not within the recovery.....read it.....read it ALL
look its written here.....

Flashing TWRP would require unlocked bootloader. First unlock Your bootloader, then follow the procedure from here.
From Your other post, it turns out You cannot unlock bootloader, so You can flash only sock based ROM's which work on Stock kernel.

I'm just download and install TWRP manager from google play and i'm trying to install the recovery. I'm choosing device name as LT26i but no recovery file is detected.
If i choose device name as "nozomi" i can find everything but my original device name is LT26i.
What to do? Are you suggest to try with nozomi and install the recovery?

Method 1. You need recovery for method 2. If You have unlocked bootloader, You can simply flash the DoomKernel too. You can find it here. Use the blue "Download Now" button, and the file has .elf extension. You can flash it via flashtool, it consists of CWM and TWRP and works with stock ROM.

Hi
Trying to root my S and install nAOSProm I followed the instructions in the main thread. I successfully unlocked the bootloader and got the device rooted (SuperSU installed and updated in play store), but when attempting to use the TWRP manager to install TWRP I just got an error message that it wasn't successful. I then did this as I read earlier in this thread: fastboot flash boot 2.8.4.1.img. When I started the phone, it immediately boots into the TWRP but I can't get anywhere from there. Impossible to continue to the OS. When I connect it to the computer I just get an exclamation point in the device manager and I can't seem to find the correct drivers (I've installed the FlashTool Xperia Driver Pack). The phone worked perfectly in windows in both normal mode and fastboot previously. Since the phone doesn't have an external memory card, and since I can't transfer any files to it from Windows, I'm stuck in TWRP.
Is it bricked or can I get out of here?

Flash stock firmware ftf using flash mode in flashtool and then follow the instructions from here.
Or else:
Boot Your phone into recovery. Connect it to PC. Right click on the device in Device Manager, select update drivers, "browse my computer", then "let me pick from list" then select the driver similar to "Sony a0109 ADB drivers" (number may vary). Then You will be able connect to phone via adb. Then use following command to push the ROM and gapps to the phone internal memory:
Code:
adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/
adb push gapps.zip /sdcard/
This will copy the the ROM and gapps to phone which You can flash via recovery easily then.
worked perfectly! thanks for your time and help, much appreciated!

What is the CORRECT way to gain ROOT in PDP3?

I have attempted :
-Fastboot boot TWRP.img
-Reboot Recovery
-TWRP Flash Magisk v16.4
-Reboot into System
Am i missing a Kernel? If so, where is the Kernel for PDP3?
Am i missing a Patched_Boot.img? If so, where is the PDP3 Patched_Boot.img?
What is the correction instruction for gaining ROOT on PDP3?
What else may i be missing from the recipe?
I have searched and asked others via PM or in the Thread, and have received half-ass replies.... So would someone please lay it out, if not, i guess i will go back to 8.1.0....where i had ROOT, Recovery, and Viper4Android... Thank God I made a back-up....

I'm generally curious how many times, and in how many threads, you're going to ask this question.
1) Flash DP3. Let the device boot, log in, set it up, etc.. I do NOT enable a pin/pattern yet.
2) Reboot to the bootloader & fastboot TWRP.
3) Flash Magisk 16.4.
4) Boot into the system & have root.
I've done this process damn near 10x going between dp2/8.1/dp3. There is no special trick to it.

Semantics. OP's post, and general boggle, is that they cannot obtain root on DP3. My response was directly related to the OPs post, and last like 10 comments across this sub. What OP had is presently irrelevant since the current goal is to obtain root. If the OP had an additional question as to how to obtain static TWRP I would have addressed that at a later date/time or your response would have been appropriate. Perhaps I took it for granted that the OP had an understanding on how to get static TWRP but, again, the point of this thread is getting root on DP3 which my response answers & yours does not.

If he wants recovery, he needs to flash twrp-Pixel2XLinstaller-.zip before flashing magisk 16.4

Semantics. OP's post, and general boggle, is that they cannot obtain root on DP3. My response was directly related to the OPs post, and last like 10 comments across this sub. No, flash Magisk unless you want to try a custom kernel. If so, flash it before Magisk, flash Magisk, then reboot.
After flashing magisk, the phone will not reboot, instead keeping me in a bootloop and sending me back into TWRP. Any ideas? Im happy to go back to stock if thatll make my phone work again!

Hey,
I was installing from P (9.0 DP3)
I installed TWRP first by flashing the image and then installing the zip file on to the phone.
Next i installed magisk, the installation all went through absolutely fine.
When i hit reboot, it goes onto the white splash screen, then brings up a small progress bar that goes across. This lasts for a minute or two, then dumps me back into TWRP.
I attempted all ways listed, and i end up Booting into Stock Recovery with a corrupt message forcing me to Power Off or Factory Reset or i got stuck at the Loading "G". Ended up restoring my June 8.1.0 Back up. Thanks for trying to help... I'll wait till there is more info on the subject...

A complete wipe when going to P is the best way to ensure there are no problems but what has worked for me is after installing dp3, rebooting to fastboot, booting to TWRP and doing a factory reset in TWRP. You will not lose data but will have to set your phone up as new. Then, boot back to fastboot and following the instructions as stated in the prior posts to gain root and recovery.

Which version of TWRP are you using (twrp-3.2.1-2 is the latest)? Are you seeing errors in the twrp gui while flashing? I'm not sure what you mean by "more info on it" because it's literally just flash the Magisk zip then reboot. The only things I can think of are that you're using an older version of twrp or the magisk zip is corrupt giving you a bad install.

Yes, always using the latest TWRP Official Builds. No errors in the script. What i mean by more info, is just that, when someone posts a thread, and i see it is working for users without issue, i will take the plunge if this doesnt work this time. And im using Magisk v16.4beta...
I think i am so use to Fastboot boot TWRP3212.img, then flashing the installer and rebooting to switch slots. I'm sure i am just not following something. Do i need to reboot after flashing Installer and before flashing Magisk, or NO reboot?

Don't reboot, TWRP installer installs to both slots.
Flash installer, hit back button, find magisk.zip, flash it.

What happens when you just do this:
Get DP flashed & configured. No passwords/patterns/security features.
fastboot boot TWRP3212.img
Flash your magisk 16.4 file.
Reboot.
