Looking to buy m8 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i had g2 and g3 now i think i will go with htc one m8, since you guys know the device, do you have other suggestions? I choose m8 because it is cheap and i liked it back then... I prefer buying an old model, and having a good community on xda...
M8 is a bit over 220usd in here, because of taxes.

220 bucks for an m8 in late 2017....just drop the idea man...its way too much than what it should be, even more than double the reasonable price if u ask me.
I bought a sprint m8 just a while back for around 100usd and even then I believe I paid a lot more than what I got eventually.
The problem with buying an m8 this late is that the battery would have lost its original capacity and just won't hold up charge(this was the case with my device), and u wud surely require a battery replacement.
Otherwise the m8 is an awesome device with development still active. The best VFM device if u can grab one at 100~120usd(220 wud be a no brainer for me)

I can only agree with the poster above. Way too much for this old device.

Yeah that shud make more sense and cost a lot more less too, but its just not possible for everyone, considering how complex the internalities of the m8 are.
Nor is everyone a risk-taker
Anyways. I'm planning to disembark from the HTC ship very soon by trading my m8 with a OPO(I tragically bought a Sprint one which can't run 4g on networks outside the states)
And thanks for ur reply

How much can you buy a OnePlus 3 where you are? I'm seeing prices in the US around $250-300. Just a bit more, for a phone that is a couple generations newer, much faster, and a huge XDA community which is still very strong. Where the M8 community is getting pretty quiet. I loved my M8 and the community here. And everyone's situations is different. But to me, the M8's time is past.

htc cutting their smartphones prices????!!!

wtf is that right htc cutting their phone prices because off the losses? i just bought the one x 2 monthes ago for about 600$ in asia! really stunned !
No idea if this is true but it makes sense, they are competing with alot of new phones at the moment (and coming up, like the iPhone 5) and yes bad economical times too for HTC, to keep up with the competition > lower prices.
Ya ..One X will be down to half n so does One S n One V will be given away for free with every Beats Headphones u buy..

well do you know what i am going to do i am going to sell it out now when it's still got it's high price and get the s3! what i should have done in the first place still hate that amoled and touchwiz but still it's better phone! thx for your replies evreyone i am not saying that the hox is a bad phone but....!
If you read the source story the liklihood of it being true are slim. Since when does a site called "mydrivers" suddenly become credible? The bad press and rumor mongering are going to hurt HTC more than anything they do at their own hand.

Even of it's true so what? You already bought the phone and I don't know about you but I think I am gonna use the phone for a while and judging by how android phones have been sooner or later the price is gonna go down anyway because there will be newer phones with better specs sold for the same price we bought our phones awhile ago.

You hate the screen which takes 90% of the phone, hate touchwiz, which defines the way you interact with the phone but still think S3 is better... that makes sense. Or at least explains why you trust that source.
Let's get real. If there are some price cuts they will be for the Chinese version (HTC did say they will bet on the Asian market) which means locked bootloaders, internet limited to the Chinese version and all the other goodies the Chinese will make HTC include in the phone. Thanks, but no thanks!

Thats bull****, halving the price?
Why should we have to pay 500£ when they decide?
But when they cant sell them at that they half it?
WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF MY MONEY?!?!?!?!?!

They can sell them for what they want. It's an electronic gadget, they always always drop in price over time. Who in their right mind would be a) surprised & b) angry over this?

I don't understand why anyone would expect them not to cut the price. When I got my hTC Desire, it had to be on a £36+/month contract to be free. Just 6 months later, it was on £20 contracts and the One X is going that way. All phones do, they're never 'current' for very long, it's just something you have to accept when buying electronics these days. Next year, all the midrange phones will have quad core CPUs and HD screens, the the year after, a £99 network operator-rebranded ZTE will. It's a _good_ thing. Don't complain about being an early adopter, it's your choice to make.
Ask yourself this: While you may be able to purchase the phone, or an equivalent phone for less money now, surely you couldn't at the time you bought it? Are you not happy you've been able to use it until now?

when it was first launched, in UAE it was like DHS 2750 and after a month its DHS 2500 and stayed like that for 3 more months, now its around DHS 2300-2400. Thats normal for every phone i've got and even the s3 is around the same price now as well.

Will you be upgrading from the HTC One M7?

Will you/did you upgrade from the M7 to the M8? If you're sticking with the M7 why?
I'm not sure? I'm interested to hear other's opinions.

I upgraded from the M7, you can't go wrong either way. The M7 was the best smart phone I've ever had but I like to have the latest things so I took the plunge for the M8. The two very small gripes with my M7 were the purple tint issue and the battery life. After 8+ months of ownership I was only just getting a day on battery if that on light/moderate usage. The M8s battery life is 40% better than the M7 so that is a huge increase. The purple tint issue has also been fixed. It's not a huge upgrade and if I were tight on money I could EASILY of kept the M7 till 2015. Your choice. This might get locked as it's a phone comparison thread but hey ho.
Thanks for your thoughts.. I agree about the battery. 12 months on I can certainly see the decay.
I hope this doesn't get locked as it is useful to those like me who have the previous model and are debating to upgrading to the next generation.
I understand comparison threads being closed, but this is discussing the same manufacturer and practically the same model, just the upgraded version. Normally flame wars happen between other OEMs like Samsung and HTC.
I imagine this thread would be useful to others who are undecided on wether to splash out of commit for another 2 years on a device that may in the real world seem just the same as the M7
Hope we can keep this discussion going!:fingers-crossed:

Same as me. I had a play with one at the O2 store today. Gotta say... its the finest looking mobile phone I've ever seen. Gun metal grey is defo the best. I'm thinking of getting one from Three tomorrow on PAYG. £459!
but I have an M7 and its in perfect condition and will have Sense 6 soon making almost the same as the M8. Is it really worth spending the money???
Have a DE on order. Loved the M7. Best phone I have ever had. Can't wait for the phone to arrive.
Yes that's exactly my predicament.. £470 for.... Looks.. which you can't see when your holding it.. a depth sensor.. and that's it really... Isn't it?
And Sense 6 coming soon.. well already here really, had it on yesterday for a while, but not officially out yet.
But.. I do want one. That's a lot of nice things I could get for my motorbike though lol.
I have T-Mobile JUMP, so I'll be trading in my M7 for the M8.
As of right now, I have another $300 to go before my M7 is paid off. On ebay, a used M7 goes for around $250.. and then you minus some shipping and ebay fees.
Definitely not worth it for me to just stick with the M7.

How exactly does JUMP work? I'm eligible for it now as well but obviously haven't used it before. Do you ever get to have both phones at the same time so you can transfer information, or do you literally go in the store with one phone and come out with the other?

You have to backup everything because you will never have both phones at the same time. You literally bring the old phone to the store, they inspect it for screen and water damage, they set up the new phone for you (they'll set up your GMail and sync the two for you) and then you walk out.
And yes, as soon as T-Mobile gets it in store, I'm using my JUMP for it. There's no reason not to since if I don't like it I can just use my second JUMP credit to trade it for something else (which I will consider doing when the 805 devices roll out).

That makes sense. What if you do the process online? I'm wondering if they would send you the device then you could take your current device to the store to trade it in.

It's not just the mah that matters. You have the more efficient SoC, better optimizations... Stuff like that.

Not sure if its actually 40% (could you link to source?) but I've definitely read that the M8 gets better battery life than the M7 from several reviews.
Well, i will get mine soon. Thanks to all SkyDragon user via donation! Max, butterfly, hox and m7 users.
I couldn't keep my hox, should sell it to get m7... But this time its different, i keep m7 and will get m8.
Why? Mostly for cooking reasons. All my team has m7 and today 6 of them has also m8.
The rest will jump soon too, we are like 40 hahaha.
I love design, sense 6, well.. All.
Doesn't mean m7 is old, i still very happy with it. But also want to taste new m8. Im curious about dot case and sense 6.
About battery, m7 got good battery, screen, best devs and roms. And soon m8.
Btw,i will release our first SkyDragon rom soon, if someone wants to join my team to be tester, or has code skilz or theming skilz, just pm.
Well done HTC, again best phone of the year! No doubt.
Have to state that. If i should keep my m7 only, im Happy too as we are getting Sense 6 soon, also dot cover
Literally just upgraded from the M7 two hours ago. Wow. Seriously just wow. I just tried out the camera, the effects are really cool. It is super mega smooth. The new SoC is very power efficient and fast. Definitely feels better too. Also glad to be rid of the purple camera tint.

Why you need a smartphone ??!!
For all your needs HTC One M8 can get the job done well.
buy it now and you will never feel sorry.
I tried so many smartphones LG G3, Galaxy S5 & iPhone 6 for some time but at the end I decide to get the M8, and for me it is the best smartphone I ever used.
Same here tried a hell of a lot of devices they all suck except the m8 best ever !

I am coming from nexus 5, g2, and s5 to HTC m8. I kinda regret waiting so long switching to m8. It's definitely one of the best smartphone I ever had. Build quality is top notch with amazing speakers. Battery life is really good and I really like sense features. Camera is decent but that's not the main reason why I bought it. I usually take pictures with my dslr.
i previously had xperia z2, then galaxy s5 and now HTC m8. and there is no doubt M8 is best among them. and i think it is still worth to buy one. amazing speed, good camera, beautiful finishing.
I've also tried all the top of the line phones and switched to new phones monthly, and than I got a m8 and the switching stopped.

Whether the phone is "worth it" to you, isn't a question other people can answer for you. It depends on what you have now, what you need the phone for, how much the money means to you, etc.
Its a great phone, and I can honestly say its probably still the best phone you can get at this time. Meaning, if I lost or broke my M8 and had to buy another phone for full price; I'd most likely just buy another M8.
On the other hand, if you have a decent phone now, there is likely going to be an impressive new HTC flagship coming in April. So you may want to wait. On the other hand, some folks switch phones like I change my underwear. So it really depends on you.

Many of these questions are already answered, if you just look through the forum sections.

Wasn't going to get one, but then I saw the specs . . .

And now I think I might really want one. Trouble is, I have to buy all my phones unsubsidized, as I'm on a business account through my job and I'm not "important" enough to warrant a high-end Android device. So I was thinking I could sell my Shooter, 2 EVO LTEs (a white one and a black one) and an M8 to try and raise funds for it. I assume the price will be around $700, as has been the case with previous flagship devices.
Anyone know of a good place to get good prices on these devices? I'd like to defer the cost a bit if I can, otherwise I won't be able to get one until next year or later (also have to save up for an anniversary gift for my "first mate" lol). Priorities, I guess.
It seems like there's going to be a good crowd on this device so I think I'd really like to be a part of it.
Please share your suggestions so I can make this happen!
P.S. I'm still hoping to be able to build Android from my phone, but I guess that would require an Ubuntu Touch port. I wonder if that would be possible . . .

I'd think the price would be $600-$650, as that is what most flagships like the S6, G3, M8, etc. go for.
If you have craigslist, go for that. It may not be the safest but you can find fantastic deals. Or... you know, wait for the m10 to be released! who knows, in that year or later it would be out.

You're talking about the U.S. right? That's the price for most flagships. The exception being the Note 4 which I believe was $699, and the Note Edge.
I hope you get an M9 or M9 plus. I use your Beyond Stock Rom as my daily driver. I haven't updated to Android 5 yet, figure I might as well just wait till M9 is out. I have pretty Loyal to HTC. 8th HTC phone in a row I will have got most of them on release day. HTC Touch Pro, TP2, EVO 4G, EVO 3D, EVO LTE, M7, M8 & M9 or M9+

Without a barometer i don't think its worth it at all.
See http://gizmodo.com/5851288/why-the-barometer-is-androids-new-trump-card
I'll probably have to pass on the m9 or won't be getting one anytime soon with grad school coming up I can't really afford it right now off contract and I'm not due for an upgrade for a while.

M9 or wait for M10

I just had to return my M9 due to my IR blaster not work. I had the phone for about a week and REALLY enjoyed it. If I had to complain about anything it would be the battery. But debloating seamed to drastically improve the batteries performance and I was not quite finished debloating when I sent it back. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 just to give you an idea of what I'm comparing the batteries performance to.When I returned the phone Amazon had run out of stock on the Gun Metal Gray version and the listing was updated to, Manufacture disconnected.
I now sit here pondering if i should hold off a bit or spend 649$ and buy the phone from HTC's website. When I had the M9 it seemed like a couple roomers popped up on the M10. I'm not a big fan of the larger screen but the rest does intrigue me. I'm just worried I'll play the wait for something better game and never decide on a phone. Especially since the launch date still seems to be a heavily rumored April.
So my question to you all is would you recommend waiting for the M10 or just buy the M9 again for 649? My main reason for asking is like I said, I only had the phone for a week. I'd like to hear from people who have history with the M9 and what they would do if they were in my shoes.

So my question to you all is would you recommend waiting for the M10 or just buy the M9 again for 649? My main reason for asking is like I said, I only had the phone for a week. I'd like to hear from people who have history with the M9 and what they would do if they were in my shoes.

Ive had the m9 since september last year, and i got no problems with it whatsoever. Had the guts of rooting my phone last week on MM. Nice experience, but if i would buy a new phone today, id probably go for the 6P. But thats just my opinion. Id suggest that you wait until the m10 drops and see if you like it first.

Thanks for the input.
I would go with the 6p in a heart beat its just to big for me. I don't want to go larger then a 5.2" screen.
As for the 5x I need more storage then 32GB. That's another reason why I liked the M9 is the expandable memory.
I love my M9, but I'd never pay $649 for it. Got mine last summer on swappa for around $400...you should check what's there now. But the price will come down even further if you can wait until the M10 comes out. Then again, the M10 may be worth going with, due to its SD 820 and better battery efficiency.
But I'm very happy with my M9...switch between it and my Moto Maxx.
i got m9 just one month after launching market i had really bad experience ( Bad battery , Camera , Design ( M8 was better) , thermal problem . its been several years iam using HTC flagship phones every year iam upgrading to new one but this M9 after one month i gave it my sister now iam with G4 waiting M10 and you should wait M10 .
The consensus is that it's much improved now vs. when it launched (due to software updates/optimizations, etc.). A good discussion is here regarding its update to Marshmallow:

The ONLY thing that keeps me happy about my m9 is boomsound. Nothing more.
I'd happily trade in if i could find another stereo device of equal spec.

I'd hold off at this point for the m10. Especially if you are going to pay full price for the m9.

Well I ended up picking up the M9 from BestBuy for 389. Paid about 50$ more compared to the one I got from Amazon but this one comes with a proper US warranty. If I would of had to pay full price I probably would of waited.
I noticed a couple hardware differences with the att version compared to the developer version I got from Amazon. But it's already imaged as a developer version and I'm near the end of my debloat process. Battery life is good and storage is nice and plentiful.
Thanks for the input everyone but I guess I'm a little to impatient.
P.s. - I do have the v2.1 810

Best Buy has some great deals ..My partner at work got 2 Galaxy S6 edge plus this morning for $214 and $200 in gift cards
they also had the Galaxy S6 edge for a penny and the same $100 gift card (he's on Sprint and was up for contract renewal )
Seems crazy their paying people $100 to take their samsung phones right now
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...rint/4424016.p?id=1219627836413&skuId=4424016
i got it for just 210$ (2nd phone but it pretty new). really cheap for a flagship
the only problem i have is bettery life (i move from droid turbo)
I bought the m9 after my m7 died...it should be here Monday. I was so in love with my m7 that I did not even bother reading reviews on the m9 -- big mistake. I have since checked into it further and am wondering if i should have purchased the galaxy s6...

Don't worry, the M9 is a much better phone than the m7 or m8. The reviews are old and wrong. The have nothing to do with the m9 on marshmallow. It's an outstanding device.

That's what I am hoping for! I have been trying to find some recent reviews and it seems they are all from 2015. I was really bummed when I saw the poor camera and battery performance....I am hoping the update fixed both of these. I cannot believe the battery is larger in the m9 but reviews said how it drained much faster than the s6. I also wish the m9 had a fingerprint sensor, but I figure I can live with out it since I have not had a phone with it yet.
M9 ****ntastic go fo it pal.
