Not a big fan of Google photos app. And I really miss the old AOSP gallery app. Seen a few apks on XDA, but none seem to have a functional photo editor. Anybody else in the same boat? Would love to hear some ideas.
I've been trying Piktures. Pretty nice so far. Has an combined photo mode for people who like that all in one photo gallery like iPhones, and can also swipe to get to individual folders like all other androids. Also has a hidden photo feature for those who need to creep, lol.
I'm not sure what you're looking for when you say a functional photo editor, but I use Focus as an alternative to photos.

What I meant is that there are some apks floating around XDA for AOSP gallery app (on older Android versions) and when you try and edit a photo with it, the app crashes. I'll check out your suggestion
Following. I hate the Photos app. I use Dropbox and have my camera uploads go there. I don't need cloud storage, and the interface is poor imo. I use Snapseed to edit photos right now, but would like a gallery app that has simple functions (crop, basic color and brightness changes, etc.).

I keep wanting to like it, but it's just so busy looking. I wish there were a more simplified version.
I've always been a fan of Motorola gallery. I usually just save an apk in my Google drive and install it when I root/get a new phone. Only crappy Part is after you take a picture and click the thumbnail while still in the camera app, it default opens in Google photos.

I keep trying gallery apps here and there but I still revert back to good old QuickPic v4.5.2.2 (the version before it was sold to Cheetah)

I was looking for an alternative also found this. Pretty nice gallery app.

I love the Photos app. The built in editor is pretty good and you can't beat the unlimited cloud storage. With that said, my second fave gallery app is QuickPic.
Google Photos has been my go to for a long time and does well everything I need.
Only thing I don't like about Photos is easily organising the photos. I have say my "Instagram" (device folder), backup to Photos. However then I have to create an album called "Instagram" and sort through the huge list of pictures to move them to their respective folders.

I hate the new Google photos app too, and don't like the sync. I signed out of the app in the settings and it's just like the old gallery

From What I Understand Its A Photosharing Application It Has Numerous Filters It's A Pretty Neat Little App It's Supposed To Come To Android But.. As Always Taking Forever.
Hipster is similar, although not as good as instagram.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hipster&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5oaXBzdGVyIl0.
Lightbox, comes with its own camera app too.
Streamzoo
Streamzoo is a great one.
instagram is cool!! hope it comes out soon for us!
I use Flickr. Been using it for a long time. The official app is great too, comes with many filters.
In my opinion, 'Magic Hour' beats out Hipstamatic/Instagram. You can make your own custom filters, but the best part is that it comes with a 'filter market'. Other users upload their custom filters and you can download them, all for free. It's amazing.

Not To Sound Like An Ass:

From what I understand, Instagram is actually the combination of an app providing photo filters like lomography cameras, AND a "kind of" social / sharing network to post and share his pictures.
I guess if you're interested in sharing picture, flickr or picasa can do the job, while for photo effects you can use many apps like paper camera, fx camera and nulmerous others...

i've been using photo editor. has alot of functions, and a simple ui. although all i ever really use it for is conversions and cropping
ProCapture is the best comparison to Camera+ that I've found. For editing and such, I use a combination of Aviary and just standard Photo Editor. The only thing I haven't found is a good polarizer filter to really remove the haze and make the blue skies pop.

Camera 360 and Avary are great. Plix o matic is reasonably good if you don't get carried away with the filters.

I was just having this conversation (with myself) the other day.
I like to take pictures and pre-filter them (very mildly) before posting them on Instagram or other services.
So, the best applications that I have seemed to have found are the following, for mild editing and filter application:
Snaptastic - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mcurrent.snaptastic&hl=en
Aviary - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aviary.android.feather&hl=en
Vignette - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.neilandtheresa.NewVignette&hl=en
CameraZOOM FX - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=slide.cameraZoom
Good luck!
One of the things I REALLY REALLY miss about the iPhone is Camera+! :/
That was the only App I needed on the iPhone, it was so good. The Clarity feature most of the times created a awesome picture, I havent found a single app on android that has a effect like "clarity" on Camera+
Maybe the closest thing is the Beautify effect on "BeFunky", try it, its free, and it has a lot of filters also, I bough the Paid version but it seems to be too different I didnt like it, so I just use that free one...

I am a big camera geek. I have tried just about every camera app on the Android market and I do miss some of the iOS apps. I came from having the iPhone 3, iphone 4 and iphone 4s to switching to the S3.
From all the different apps I have tried here is my opinion of the apps you NEED if you like photography.
1. Perfectly Clear - This app is also on iOS and will adjust a picture automatically. You just load a picture and it will fix the contrast and everything else. While some apps have an auto correct feature, this one blows them out of the water.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...h.perfectlyclear&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
2. Magic Hour - It's like InstaGram on crack. Whereas most filter apps come with a preset amount of filters Magic Hour lets you download filters for free or create your own for free to use later. You can get thousands upon thousands of filters. Everything from the subtle to the crazy overboard ones. You can even "pull" filters from pictures you already put through it in order to use that filter on another pic. Great for getting the same look if you did filtered a picture long ago.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiwiple.mhm&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
3. TouchRetouch - This app lets you "magically remove" things from pictures. It's pretty crazy how well it works. Photoshop has a tool that works just like this and the fact this works on a mobile device is awesome. You can't erase HUGE things from photos but it can intelligently remove things like power lines, background items and more.

You can try the ones I have in my thread here...there's a ton of fun ones

Agreed. Camera+ was my go-to-app for photo editing and the "clarity" feature was pretty amazing.

I am one of those people that LOVES taking pictures on my phone and I have tried just about every Photo and Panoramic app on the Play Store. I had a iPhone 4 before I switched over to S3 and at the beginning I was scared because I was letting go of some really good photo apps.
Now though, I think I might have found the ones that fit my photography style perfectly.
1: Magic Hour. Think of it as instagram with unlimited filters. It has a "Filter Store" where you can download other filters that people have made using the app. There are THOUSANDS of these. Thankfully you can search by newest, most popular, etc. This is like Instagram on crack. LOVE IT! Also, if you run a photo through Magic Hour and save it, then weeks later you want to run another photo through the same filter but forgot which it was, you can load up the photo you saved and it'll figure out which filter was used and you can throw that on to another picture. You can also mark filters as favorites, etc
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiwiple.mhm
2: Perfectly Clear. With just one button this app will make your photos look so much better. They had this one on the iPhone as well and I'm glad it carried over. It fixes saturation, contrast, color, brightness and it does it all better than any other app I have found
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.worldiety.athentech.perfectlyclear
3: TouchReTouch. Sometimes you take a great photo and happen to notice after the fact that there is something in the background or powerlines you wish weren't in the photo. With TouchReTouch you just highlight want you want removed from the photo and it smartly removes it. It is a lot like using the smart eraser in Photoshop except you can do it on your phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.advasoft.touchretouch
4: AfterFocus. After focus simulates what a DSLR camera can do where the foreground is clear and then the background is blurry (not in focus). You just use your finger and select the foreground, then select the mid ground (optional), then select the background. It will then very realistically blur the background so your picture gets a great DSLR look to it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motionone.afterfocus_pro
Usually I'll take a photo, edit things out of it I don't want with TouchReTouch, then depending on the photo I'll run it through AfterFocus to get the DSLR look and then Perfectly Clear to make it look the best possible. Finally, depending on what I want the photo to look like I'll apply a filter. And if things go ok then I get pictures like this: http://trukatu.com/baby.jpg
As a bonus, I should mention that HDR Camera+ is one of the best HDR apps. Most HDR apps takes 3-4 pictures and combines the brightnesses to make one awesome looking pic. But they all require you to remain almost perfectly still. HDR Camera+ is the only one that takes multiple photos, analyzes the brightnesses and combines that all over the first image only. So even if the subject moves or your hands moves or something, it still looks great.

I agree, best panoramic app. I still think the iOS panoramic app "AutoStitch" is hands down the best panoramic app on any device (except pc) but Photosphere is the best for android
I wouldve kept the 4.2 camera due to all the functionalities it had , full screen view and last but not least photosphere, but had to say goodbye to it cus I couldnt figure out how to automatically save photos to my external sd card :/

Camera+ is probably the thing I miss most about iOS. Camera ZOOM FX is pretty alright, but it's no Camera+.

Hi guys, I heavily use the picasa sync feature of the stock gallery, I have about 5-6 albums there plus instant upload. I like to have all these folders synced in the stock gallery, which is y google photo sync is pretty important for me. But what pisses me off pretty bad is then I cant use the awesome camera features of cna/aokp/cm etc(I use camera zoom instead). I have tried searching for a suitable gallery replacement app on the market with native picasa sync but to no avail. Fish bowl seems quite nice but no picasa sync.I know, I might me missing something here....but any ideas? I really want to use all the camera features!!!!
Personally, I use Perfect Tool for Picasa, which has a gallery and lets you edit/share albums. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=larry.zou.colorfullife&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImxhcnJ5LnpvdS5jb2xvcmZ1bGxpZmUiXQ..

Does anyone have a recommendation on a Gallery app that actually knows what to do with portrait mode pictures? Seems like Google Photos is the only one that knows how to properly categorize/show portrait pictures. Every other gallery app I have used shows every portrait picture and the non portrait picture as it's own album. Clutters up a gallery really quick.
Any suggestions?

I hope this isn't too much off topic but felt like it was worth mentioning. My favorite all time gallery app if one hasn't tried it is Sony's Album app. To me it is hands down the best app when dealing with a lot of photos. There is a universal port here on XDA if anyone is interested, thank you.
just curious - if google photos works, why use anything else?
Sony Album app was always great and has been ported to work on pretty much any android phone

So I have tried to find the answer with no luck. How do I switch my text app, Facebook, Instagram apps to use Google photos as the default instead of Samsung photo app?
It will use both, just add a shortcut to Google Photos on your homescreen where Samsung Gallery was and use that instead
That definitely didn't solve the problem. It's just using the Samsung photo gallery, and doesn't even give me the option to make Google photos as my default.

I am having the same issue. There's no way to change the stock Gallery app to google photos. When I had my pixel, my apps would source directly from Google Photos, and I guess I was spoiled. Even if a photo wasn't downloaded and I selected it to send, it would forward it after it downloaded.
It's a pretty dumb situation honestly with this phone. Your text app you can use the Google photo app, but anything else like , IG or Facebook you have to go into Google photos app and download it to the phone so the picture you want to post goes into the stupid Samsung gallery. I bought the app that someone had suggested to disable the Samsung gallery app and it didn't work. Also when you disable the app, it effects other apps on the phone, so you are pretty much screwed. Besides the fingerprint scanner, I think this whole, not being able to just use the Google photo app as default for everything is the next biggest ****ty thing about this phone. I still love the phone, but you pay the big bucks and you still have to deal with issues like this, when phones half the price offer these two things better. Oh well I guess?
