How to Install TWRP? - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want install Lineage OS 14.1.
At first install TWRP.(twrp-amami-3.1.1-0.img)
My device
ftf: D5503_14.5.A.0.242_Malaysia.ftf
bootloader: unlocked
root: using rootkitXperia_20150926
recovery: using Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.26-RELEASE.combined
Try1:
I tried "fastboot flash recovery twrp-amami-3.1.1-0.img".
start twrp (power+volume down) will not work.
Try2:
reinstall and start dualrecovery TWRP.
install twrp-amami-3.1.1-0.img.
start twrp (power+volume down) will not work.
How to Install TWRP?

After restart wait for sony sign and violet light, then:
start twrp (power+volume UP)...
That's working for me...

Thank you for the advice,bratusm!
But, Normal boot... or Phliz Touch is started...... or TWRP2.8.7 is started...
Code:
Case 1:
after Sony logo, vibration and greed LED light.
If no operation, it will start normally....
Code:
Case 2:
after Sony logo, vibration and greed LED light.
volume down.
violet LED light.
start TWRP 2.8.7(from Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.26-RELEASE.combined)
Code:
Case 3:
after Sony logo, vibration and greed LED light.
volume down.
violet LED light.
power + vloume up.
start Phliz Touch(from Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.26-RELEASE.combined)
need strict timing...? or wrong operarion..?
wrong step before "fastboot flash recovery twrp-amami-3.1.1-0.img"?

If you have TWRP 2.8.7. is simple.
1. Put new TWRP of your choice on SD card.
2. reboot to TWRP that you have on phone (your "Case 2")
3. From there flash image of new TWRP. Follow instructions to flash image of newer TWRP from inside old one: https://twrp.me/huawei/huaweip9.html

Thank you bratusm.
I already tried "Install from image on TWRP and restart recovery". (TWRP:multiple versions, not only twrp-amami-3.1.1-0.img)
I know, this step will OK in other smart phone.
But,Z1 Compat in this case.
After the sandstorm was displayed twice, only the backlight blinking black screen...
and do not accept any operation.....

So did you find a solution to upgrade recovery?
I have a rooted 5.1.1 with the same dual recovery.
this old recovery meets error when flashing new pie roms.
I don't succeed to flash new recovery. my phone has a locked bootloader. I tried to flash twrp 3.2 with flashify and twrp officiel app with success , but when reboot to recovery it's always 2.8.7.0

[Q] Has Android Revolution HD install bricked my phone? [Solved]

Hello All.
This is the first time I have tried to put a custom ROM on an HTC so I am still learning the ropes.
I tried to follow the instructions in the first post. So... In sequence, this is what I did...
HTC One X unlocked with htcdev.com (S-ON) or S-OFF (coming soon)
This seemed to go without a hitch. On the HBoot screen (I think that is what it is called) it tells me I am now unlocked.
ClockworkMod Recovery or 4EXT Touch Recovery (coming soon)
I installed the official version as per the instructions here.
The last instruction that seemed to work successfully was this:
Code:
fastboot flash boot recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.4-endeavouru.img
Then I tried
Code:
fastboot reboot
which put me into recovery mode.
<EDIT> The instructions here have now been corrected to:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.4-endeavouru.img
</EDIT>
Choosing the reboot option from recovery just bounces me back into recovery mode but I understand from the instructions I should be able to boot into a working phone!
Has something gone wrong?
If I use the volume down + power button I can enter HBoot mode. From here I can select Fastboot. Connecting via USB to my computer seems to work fine, as I see Fastboot USB on my phone, and I when I execute this...
Code:
fastboot devices
I get something like this
Code:
List of devices attached
HTXXXXXXXXXX device
I am now unsure how to continue because I think something has gone wrong and I should have a working phone at this point.
Do I press ahead and try to install the Firmware package from here? Unless this lets me boot into a working phone (which I don’t believe it will), it still leaves me with the problem that for a One X, without a removable SD card I don’t know how to transfer and run the "Super Wipe" script, nor transfer and flash Android Revolution ROM via recovery.
Do I need to do something with
Code:
fastboot flash
?
Please help as she is threatening to dump me for destroying her 2-day-old phone.
It's
Code:
fastboot flash [B]recovery[/B] recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.4-endeavouru.img
not boot..
Solution for you is to go into bootloader, flash recovery with the command i gave you and then reboot into recovery and install the rom..
After that everything should be ok and your phone will boot into ARHD without any problem.
delete please

It looks like the instructions I followed previously had an error then.

I will follow your instructions. But what about the RUU that is mentioned in the instructions? It is not clear how or when I should flash it. Presumably I flash the RUU before I do the ARHD flash... ???

You don't need to flash any RUU or firmware unless your phone wasn't shipped with 1.26, which i don't think it was.
Just try flashing the recovery with the correct command and then the rom. If your phone doesn't boot after that then you may try the firmware but i'm sure you won't need it.

So, I understand that you are telling me:
Flashing CWM recovery will rectify my current problem and restore my phone to a workable state.
Booted normally, I can copy the ARHD ROM to the internal SD (not sure what the location for this will be).
I then reboot into recovery and 'Install Zip from SD card'.

Good advice, I am sure. However my problem now is getting into a working phone so that I can transfer the ROM onto the internal SD.
Can't wait to get home and try it!
what you have done is replaced your boot sector with a recovery image, that is the reason why you cant boot your phone as normal so even flashing the recovery correctly will not allow your phone to boot up.
as your phone cannot boot up you cannot transfer any files to the internal memory of your phone in order to flash ARHD
at present there is a problem with the official version of ClockworkMod Recovery so i personally would reccommend using the interim version HERE
and flash with fastboot flash recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavoru.img
As you have [email protected]$ked your boot partition up you will also want to download THIS
this is an insecure boot image (thanks to paul from modaco) I have just extracted the part you will need from his package
with this you will need to be in fastboot again and type fastboot flash boot boot.img
obviously you will need to copy both of the files to the same directory as fastboot is on your PC in order to send them
by flashing the boot section with the insecure boot here it will allow your phone to boot up normally again, once it has booted normally you can then copy the ARHD and superwipe to your internal SD card
to access recovery
power off phone by holding power button for 10seconds
power on with power+voldown
select recovery from hboot screen with voldown then power to select
your phone will reboot and then you will be in recovery
do a nandroid backup incase anything goes wrong
then flash the superwipe script
then flash ARHD 1.2.2
all is good

You are correct of course, however, there comes a point where the only way to learn is to actually do something. I have flashed numerous ROMS on my Galaxy S, and before doing this I have read numerous guides trying to better understand the procedures for HTC devices.
I have tried to follow what appeared to be a step-by-step guide, however, either there has been a malfunction, or it appears there may be two important bits of information missing from that guide:
Flashing CWM recovery leaves the phone in a state that it won't boot normally, and consequently...
The ARHD ROM should be loaded onto the internal SD at the very beginning of the procedure

@bagofcrap24 I may have misled you with a typo in the first post. (See my edit)
d'oh
edit : just read updated info
so what happens when you choose recovery and press power from the hboot screen
i'm understanding that when doing a normal reboot it just sends you straight into hboot?
power on with voldown
press voldown to select recovery
press power to select recovery
you should either see CWM or the stock recovery
again looking at what you have written, if you just do a normal reboot and its putting you straight into recovery then you probably have flashed recovery onto the boot partition

I get a circular yellow 'recycling' symbol, followed a few seconds later by a magenta triangle with an exclamation mark. (Is this the stock recovery?). Then the phone restarts and I end up back in the Clockworkmod recovery.

No. A normal reboot (without holding the Vol down key) sends me straight to clockworkmod recovery.
I can get to HBoot with Vol down+Power on startup.

Right this means you did mess up the boot and recovery partitions, the one where you have the exclamation mark is the stock recovery which means you didn't flash cwm to the recovery partition.
the fact that you get to recovery on a normal boot also suggests as I suspected that you have flashed recovery on to the boot partition, follow the instructions I put up earlier about flashing the boot.IMG and redo the recovery.IMG and you should be fine

Your analysis is quite correct. All is indeed good! Thanks very much. The boot image worked as described. I will now transfer Superwipe and the ROM.
Make sure you do a nandroid backup first, it was lucky this time but if you mess up your system partition you may find yourself with no way of putting files on without unrooting and restoring the ruu

Everything has gone fine to the point i tried to install a recvoery
First tried to install TWRP recovery which install went fine but i couldnt get phone in to recvoery so i then installed clockwork mod recovery and still cant get phone in to recvoery.
I installed ROM manager and it shows under recvoery already installed clockworkmod recvoery & TWRP recovery but even when i select boot in to recovery from that phone just turns on as normal.
Have tried holding volume up/down button on sony flash but no good
Have tapped screen when sony logo showing and phone just seems to lock
Anyone got any ideas what i can do?

Which ROM are You trying to flash? If it is a Kitkat ROM as You mentioned, then first copy the ROM and gapps to phone for flashing purposes .
Now, on PC, extract the boot.img from rom zip and flash it via fastboot. Then flash the ROM via twrp which would be installed from that boot.img!

You must have not flashed the rom after flashing the boot.img. That's why it used to get stuck on boot logo of Sony. The kernel(boot.img) of any Kitkat ROM won't with JB ROM as far as I know.
Don't worry, there is still hope since You can at least get it to boot up halfway.
That flashing the original ftf is weird. Are You sure the ftf file is proper? Try downloading a new one. or if You were able to successfully able to flash the original firmware according to flashtool, try flashing it again using Sony Update Service(SUS). Can't guarantee the SUS will work or not.

Hello.
I'm trying to get this **** working as well, but even though it seems like you gave some crystal clear instructions I still manage to not understand it. I unlocked the bootloader on my S and downloaded. All I really wanted to do was get a good 4.4 ROM running, any chance you could toss an idiot some help?
From what I understand:
1. copy the ROM zip-file over to phone
2. connect phone to pc and fastboot it
3. flash the boot.img from the rom zip-file
4. flash the ROM (how?)
I did a quick google on twrp but don't quite understand what I need it for or if I need it.
EDIT: After a bit of looking, apparently the ROM I'm looking to flash (Paranoid Android) installs twrp when you flash the boot.img. Just in case that changes anything.
Brick?
Hi. So I just tried to flash the boot.img from the latest Paranoid Android, got 0 errors or bad blocks, succesful flash according to cmd. I did fastboot reboot as the guide here says: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526866
LED notification goes pink for a few seconds, I get the Sony logo then just an infinite black screen. Left it on for about 15 minutes with no success. I tried force rebooting/shutting it down with volup+power for 5/10 seconds, but both of them just result in the phone getting instantly turned back on and going pink LED->Sony logo->black screen. This means I can't (from what I can tell anyway) boot into fastboot (vol-up+connect to USB does nothing, vol-down+connect to USB gets me a green LED for a few seconds but then goes over to pink LED, Sony logo and then black screen).
I would really appreciate any kind of help right now, even just advice on how to turn this phone off would be fantastic, because right now that also seems impossible.

No worries! If You were able to perform upto step no.3 properly, then when You boot into twrp(Press volume up button 2-3 times while booting up), there is an option there called as "Install". In that You select the zip file of the ROM and slide the bar to install it!

Does this happen to anyone else? Can't access TWRP unless I flash it

So the only way I can get to TWRP is by flashing it.
Everytime I do the button combination to go to recovery while the phone is off, it takes me to the LG thing and says "would you like to reset to factory settings?" and only says "yes" or "no."
No TWRP at all.
If I choose yes, then all my data is gone. If I choose no, then nothing happens.
The only way I can get to TWRP is to go on fastboot, and do "fastboot boot twrp.img"
If I do "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" then it does nothing.
Any help is appreciated.

You can either try this, or you maybe need another method. I had the same problem when I installed TWRP on 6.0. It didn't seem to be properly installed. What I did was
- Use LGUP to go back to 5.1 Stock ROM
- Root it following THESE instructions
- Install TWRP (Works flawlessly on 5.1 and you can use Quick Boot from the play store to check if it works)
- And THEN Upgrade to 6.0 with autoprime's Guide --> THIS one
After I did this I had rooted 6.0 with TWRP working. Maybe this will solve your problem. Cheers
the recovery is there, just say yes and yes and it will load

It just wipes my phone.
If you're at TWRP, reboot with it into TWRP again. Just follow the instructions and deny SU-things, you get presented. You can also flash SuperSU through it, boot up, install Flashify and install TWRP with it - also works great (did it this way). Just download TWRP from the official source & don't download it through Flashify.
You have only copy the twrp-xxx.img to your internal storage or sd card.
Boot via adb into TWRP, go to install, choose the twrp-xxx.img flash it as revovery and thats it.
Now you can rebooter apps to boot direcly into recovery or use the power down/power key combination during while you power the phone.

[Brick phone] help needed

I have flashed many phones before my G4 and this is the first time I'm having to ask for help.
The firmware installed was AICP CM13, then the screen went green with a DemiGod message. I held the vol down button to reboot and it came back up. After a few restarts and green screens i figured I needed to reflash the firmware. I booted into Recovery and while wiping the device to flash a new firmware, TWRP crashed. After leaving it for half hour or so, I took the battery out to enter into TWRP so I can flash the new firmware. TWRP is no there to be seen. I hold down the vol down and power button, releasing power for second or two and choose to go into recovery. Every time the phone just gets stuck on the LG screen displaying "Bootloader state :Bootlader unlocked!".
In short, I have no firmware, the device has been wiped and TWRP doesn't seem to be working.
I have tried to flash a KDZ file (H81520A_00.kdz) using the flash guide here. This comes back as unsuccessful saying "connection to server failed". As shown below.

The method to flash an .img file using cmd on the pc includes moving the 4gb .img file to the parent folder of the phone storage. I can't get to move any files whatsoever to my device so figured this method would not work.
Seems if I can somehow flash TWRP, then I should be able to install a new firmware.
Any help much appreciated.
Hi, Can you get an ADB connection to your phone, or get your phone into bootloader somehow. From there you could try 'fastboot boot recovery.img'?
If so, then from within TWRP you can flash twrp recovery so the recovery is then sorted. Then you could flash click here (the full version). This will then allow LG UP to find a connection. From there if you really wanted to can flash any KDZ as a proper reset. Hope it works buddy!!

I can get into recovery but I am unsure as to how I could try 'fastboot boot recovery.img'. Would that be the same as flashing an img when the root method first came out?

Just to make sure you know. TWRP is your recovery. Your last message said you did not have TWRP?
When I first rooted my phone (and subsequently when I install a .kdz), I have to go into the bootloader and install TWRP. I personally do this by using the above command "fastboot boot recovery.img" with the recovery.img being placed on my computer in the same location as my adb installation. This command only boots up TWRP but does not flash it. I then flash twrp by having a copy of it on my external sd card. Within twrp you can select to flash zip, or there is an option to flash an image. I use this to flash twrp (from twrp... its a little inception like but it works). Once you have twrp up and running, you can install a rom. If you want to do flash a .kdz, I have found you need to be on a stock based rom in the first place hence why i referenced the v20a full system zip.
Hope that made sense.

Ravi
It is late here and with me being tired I said recovery instead of download. I can boot into download mode but when I try to boot into recovery then it just goes straight to the LG splash screen and it will either remain in that screen or the green Demigod screen would come up.
I'm off to sleep and away from my laptop as I have to be up in 5 hours. Luckily I still have my Note 4 so at least I'm not without a phone in the morning. I will try the steps what you have suggested just as soon as I get back from work.
Many thanks

I have finally got chance to sit down and have a go at performing the procedure listed above. I downloaded the adb and fastboot installation as outline here. It is the minimum to what this thread says I will need for my device. I moved the recovery.img to the installation location which were in Windows/programs files (x86)/Minimal adb and fastboot. I launched the program and typed in 'fastboot boot recovery.img'. I tried this in download mode, charging mode (phone off) and while on the LG flash screen where TWRP didnt load but in all cases I have had no response at all.
If someone can help the much appreciated.

I had another demigod type screen but this was grey and not green with less detail. However it did say it were a kernel error.
Is the handset still under warrenty with the bootloader unlocked. I have a feeling its not

What have I done to my phone? - TWRP.

Good evening all.
I must have done somethingto my phone... as, when I install TWRP, it boots for the fist time, but then it disappears and all recovery boots go to stock recovery
Could it be a matter of partitions?
Thanks a lot.

As long as you are flashing twrp & not booting twrp image there's no reason why it shouldn't perminatly be there
Full instructions on my twrp thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5/development/official-twrp-3-1-1-0-moto-g5-t3699737
To access recovery after you have
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Hold power and volume down
At bootloader menu use volume keys to navigate to recovery option
Press power button to select recovery option
Any other questions read the faq on the second post first

Many thanks for your reply. This is why I am so disoriented about the cause...
I have flashed twrp for years on various phones: HTC, Samsung, Motorola... I do exactly as per your instructions, I get the OK after the flash, reboot and it is there. Reboot again.... and back to stock

Once you entered twrp for the first time did you swipe to allow modifications?
If using stock rom you also need to disable dm-verity or your phone will not boot
Maybe the stock rom is flashing stock recovery whenever you boot into it? Try flashing twrp while using a custom rom and see if it still boots to stock recovery instead of twrp.
